It's probably the second holy-shit scary moment I've had during the past few months. The other was a guy in a 4WD who decided to pass a truck while I was coming the other way on my road bike. If you count September 4th it'd be the third big scare in 6 months but to be honest I wasn't truly fearing for my life during that. But life on the edge is taking some getting used to ;) One of the things I will never forget from last Tuesday was the look on the faces of the people around me. They were quietly scared out of their minds. And I may as well have been looking in a mirror. It looks like I'll be at work again in the next couple of days. It seems that some business owners have been allowed through the cordon and our work computers have been retrieved. I'll be working at home again until we find some alternative premises. Considering the state of the roads it's best that we're not commuting anyway. I'd much rather keep the roads free for emergency vehicles. I spent today in a small town called Methven, about 90 minutes southwest of here. Janet had some consulting to do at a company down there and invited me along. She dropped me off so I had the day to do whatever I wanted while she worked. There's not a lot to do there so I spent most of the time just walking around enjoying the sights, but she did ask me to see if I could find a grave of one of her distant relatives (she does a lot of family history research). A graveyard is a great place to sit and contemplate life. Anyway, after she'd finished her work we went to visit one of her living relatives... who let me use her shower. Oh bliss. Oh joy. What an enlightening experience, my first real shower in a week. Something that simple was a great lift to my spirits. Then we came home and found that our water has gone out again :( We still have about 15 litres in our emergency container and plenty more available from the filling stations so there's no worry, but it's much more convenient when it comes out of the tap, even if we do have to boil it before use. Another issue coming up is that the silt on the roads from the liquefaction is drying out and the traffic is whipping up a lot of dust. But I think it's meant to rain in the next couple of days. GESO Portrait Party
I've been thinking that one way to sell portraiture would be Portrait Parties. Get a group of friends together, and by using the same setup on all of them, and having them help each other rate and choose the keepers, I could photograph four or five people in the time that it normally takes me to do a full on portrait session. They wouldn't each get quite as much time in front of the camera as one person would in a three or four hour session, but they'd each get some good photos out of it. I did my first one yesterday. My friend Sharon, had a friend who recently turned 50, and is trying to get into acting and modeling, and needs some photographs for her portfolio. Sharon asked me about photographing her friend, and we decided to try doing the portrait party and get all of the friends in front of the camera. I was there for about five hours, spent about 3 1/2 hours actually shooting, and was totally wrung out by the end of the day. They had dinner reservations, so we had a time limit. We also had a whole lot of fun. When women get together, they have fun in a much more exuberant way than guys do. The fun that they were having really showed through in some of the group photos too. Another thing that I think I did right was in addition to the sexy black dresses, I had them bring some props for some fun and silly photos. It's been my experience that the best photos from a session are usually the ones from our getting a silly idea. Dave On Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 5:56 AM, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote: I've been thinking that one way to sell portraiture would be Portrait Parties. Microsoft has a Norton AV removal tool somewhere on their website. Search support.microsoft.com for norton removal tool I don't think you really need one for McAfee. It's slightly better behaved. From: eckinator which won't do the trick 100%, same as with other manufacturers. both the symantec and kaspersky support hotlines have free tools for a full removal (symantec NoNAV or CleanWipe and Kaspersky KAVremover) so I think it is reasonably safe to assume MacAfee will require a similar procedure. can't vouch for TrendMicro's claim being accurate but they say their enterprise products perform a complete uninstall. what I do know though is that their home offering, PCcillin isn't really the most effective scanner. 2011/2/28 Brian Walters supera1...@fastmail.fm: On Sun, 27 Feb 2011 22:20 -0500, Doug Franklin jehosep...@mindspring.com wrote: On 2011-02-27 22:07, Paul Stenquist wrote: How would I go about uninstalling it? Technical questions: Manfrotto tripod (3182+3433 head)
Hi All, I have a few practical questions about a Manfrotto video tripod (3182 tripod + 3433 head, aka Video 501). 3433 Head: 1. Would I have any problems mounting a photo camera (K-7 in particular) to its QR plate? 2. Are there any other QR plates that would work fine with this head (without any modifications), and that cost less then $20 (that's what a new one costs at BH or Adorama). 3. What is the purpopse of two threaded holes (of different size) in the head just below the QR plate? 3182 legs: 4. What is the purpose of a bronze-looking stud with a hole at the bottom of each leg? (My guess is it is for mounting a dolly or some ground-level spreader, or whatever those rubber strips are called. Right?) 5. What is the purpose of the threaded hole in the mount of one of the legs (at the top of the tripod) Thank you, Igor -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Having friends at a photo shoot completely changes the chemistry, and the photographer almost becomes incidental, making minor suggestions and corrections, rather than directing each and every shot and pose. I wasn't totally passive, but in many ways, having them there together was more of a case of pointing them in roughly the right direction and letting them go. I'm working on writing something about how to be photographed and my advice to bring stuff for a silly photo worked out great. They totally got into playing with the props. One of the major advantages of the group shots was not having to mess much with the lighting. I made minor adjustments during the day, mostly moving the key light. RE: Technical questions: Manfrotto tripod (3182+3433 head)
From: Igor Roshchin Hi All, I have a few practical questions about a Manfrotto video tripod (3182 tripod + 3433 head, aka Video 501). 3433 Head: 1. Would I have any problems mounting a photo camera (K-7 in particular) to its QR plate? You'd have to remove the stud that keeps the plate from twisting when it's mounted to a video camera. http://preview.tinyurl.com/4vfdz7s The brass stud seen here just in front of the screw that attaches the plate to the camera. If it screws out, no problem (other than losing it) ... otherwise you might have to file it off or use a hacksaw to remove it. Overall, I think the combination is too heavy, too clumsy overly bulky for still photography. I don't think you'd have too many problems mounting the camera to the QR plate, but I think you'd find the combination very inconvenient to carry around and actually use. 2. Are there any other QR plates that would work fine with this head (without any modifications), and that cost less then $20 (that's what a new one costs at BH or Adorama). Only a guess, but no. 3. What is the purpopse of two threaded holes (of different size) in the head just below the QR plate? I have no idea. None of the photos of the heads I found show the two holes. But again, only a guess ... likely a 1/4 and 3/8 threaded hole so you can bolt something to the head in place of the QR plate. 3182 legs: 4. What is the purpose of a bronze-looking stud with a hole at the bottom of each leg? (My guess is it is for mounting a dolly or some ground-level spreader, or whatever those rubber strips are called. Right?) 5. What is the purpose of the threaded hole in the mount of one of the legs (at the top of the tripod) Thank you, Igor The 3182 legs are not in Manfrotto's current product line-up. At least I can't find them on Manfrotto's site and found no good images at either BH or Adorama. I did find a photo showing the combination you're considering at BH indicating it is NO LONGER AVAILABLE, but was not able to see the holes you're asking about. http://preview.tinyurl.com/6k4xvrs Again, I think you would find the combination too cumbersome for practical use with still photography. - No virus found in this message. On 28/2/11, John Sessoms, discombobulated, unleashed: You'd have to remove the stud that keeps the plate from twisting when it's mounted to a video camera. http://preview.tinyurl.com/4vfdz7s The brass stud seen here just in front of the screw that attaches the plate to the camera. If it screws out, no problem (other than losing it) ... otherwise you might have to file it off or use a hacksaw to remove it. That locating stud is on a spring and will recess if it doesn't encounter a suitable hole. It can also be removed if not needed. -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The DA14 is a remarkably sharp, well corrected lens even wide open. fitting this lens to the Pentax K10D 10Mpixel body produces absolutely awesome detail resolution the DA14 performs very satisfactorily for an ultrawide lens when wide open, and is certainly very useable at that lens opening. At f/4, it outperforms lenses three times the price Pentax DA14 [..] was the best performer of the lot and inspired me to buy the lens and body.
