So hey everyone! I know I haven't been around of late much, been crazy
busy, will fill you all in soon, however...

I just realised that I haven't posted this to the list and I am such a bad
mummy for not doing so! Some of you have seen this on Facebook, but, here
goes: My daughter is in the top 10 in the Australian Search for the next
Milky Bar Kid!!

You may remember Molly-Rose as I photograph her so much and she is all
over

my portfolio with her ginormous eyes!

Anyways, she has beaten over 1600 entrants Nationwide, to get where she is
and if she wins, will receive $10k and also record the new Milky Bar TVC
in

New Zealand next month.

So,Final shameless Mummy Plug (I promise)! I just realised that today
is
the big day! Voting for the Milky Bar Kid closes at midnight tonight! If
you
haven't already, please vote for our beautiful Molly-Rose Mayer-Love, she
is

driving us nutts! If she doesn't win, I think I might go on holiday to the
Himalayas for a week whilst she grieves! lol.

The link to the site to vote is here: www.milkybar.com.au and she is the
second last picture on the page.

Thanks guys, hopefully we will have some great news to announce come
Monday

when we find out who the winner is!

Tan.x.

Ricoh probably care a bit more about cameras than Hoya do,
and they seem to put a high value on the current products.

I tell you what, Pentax Australia is finally taking a bit of notice of

In all honesty, I *have* struggled in the past months due to the sensor

been mentoring me for the awards and who shoots with a 5D MkIII, only
went home with two silvers! Bwahahaha! And here's me, my first awards,

Before you flame on me, no I am not. I will stay with my loved white
Kr, and maybe a K5 update later...

But how many times I heard this from friends... countless.

Most of the time the reason is: Pentax is not good for studio
 photography.

I was not aware of Benjikan (or Benjamin Kanarek) until recently a
friend of mine directed me to his page. (FYI:
 http://www.benjaminkanarek.com/ )

So I now always ask my friends when they say Pentax is not good enough
for studio: You think his photographs are not good enough? You already
reached his level and you feel it's not enough for you?

Obviously... the answer is no :D

But to be honest I had some hesitations sometimes as well... I love
Sony's new system, for not having a blacked VF during the photos and
most importantly, videos. But is it really that important? Well... no.

But which other company offers you the possibility to try the
astrophotography for a low price of £200ish? Or has a grip so
comfortable that you don't really want to use a battery grip to make
the use of the camera comfortable?

But on the other end there are limits for sure. Not having most of the
3rd party companies support for P-TTL (YangNuo, Phottix...) is one of
the main concerns, but apart from that... I am still in love with
 Pentax :)

So, yes... Sony A55 and Nikon D5100 are really tempting for me giving a
bit more options, but I believe my little Pentax Kr is a very good
 partner for my photography needs.

Why did I write this? Well... I just had to tell you this and we read
so many rants then why not a praise? :)

 Regards,
 .t

Re: I am leaving Pentax because it limits me...

2011-07-01 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I didn't leave Pentax. I stopped using Pentax equipment. Big deal:
I've owned and used equipment made by all the major vendors and most
of the minor ones too over the past 40+ years. Equipment is
transitory: the least important part of doing photography is what
brand of equipment you use.

If people feel they cannot do what they want with a particular brand
of equipment, by all means they should try to use something else. If
they then *still* can't do the photography they want to, I suggest
that the problem isn't the equipment at all.

I've been reasonbly successful doing the photography I wanted to do
with all of the equipment I've owned. I change equipment mostly
because I see advantage and comfort in trying some other gear, for
some clear reason, usually because my photographic goals change and
some other mix of gear seems to be more suited to a particular goal.
Sometimes it works out that way, sometimes not. But I *always* get the
work I need to do accomplished, whatever gear I happen to be using.

...Equipment often gets in the way of Photography. ...

Well, Godfrey has made us aware of Ricoh's innovative approach to
mirrorless systems and Pentax has optical expertise. And, at least
from my POV, Pentax has a bigger reputation. How big is Ricoh as a
company? It will definitely focus Pentax on photography as long as
the combination has enough business to keep going.

I fully expect Godfrey to tape a little Pentax on that modular camera of his.

Subject: I am leaving Pentax because it limits me...

Before you flame on me, no I am not. I will stay with my loved white Kr, and
 maybe a K5 update later...

But how many times I heard this from friends... countless.

Most of the time the reason is: Pentax is not good for studio photography.

I was not aware of Benjikan (or Benjamin Kanarek) until recently a friend of
mine directed me to his page. (FYI:
 http://www.benjaminkanarek.com/ )

So I now always ask my friends when they say Pentax is not good enough for
studio: You think his photographs are not good enough? You already reached
his level and you feel it's not enough for you?

Obviously... the answer is no :D

But to be honest I had some hesitations sometimes as well... I love Sony's
new system, for not having a blacked VF during the photos and most
importantly, videos. But is it really that important? Well... no.

But which other company offers you the possibility to try the
astrophotography for a low price of £200ish? Or has a grip so comfortable
that you don't really want to use a battery grip to make the use of the
 camera comfortable?

But on the other end there are limits for sure. Not having most of the 3rd
party companies support for P-TTL (YangNuo, Phottix...) is one of the main
concerns, but apart from that... I am still in love with Pentax :)

So, yes... Sony A55 and Nikon D5100 are really tempting for me giving a bit
more options, but I believe my little Pentax Kr is a very good partner for my
 photography needs.

Why did I write this? Well... I just had to tell you this and we read so many
rants then why not a praise? :)

 Regards,
 .t

Re: Is Ricoh Going to Buy Pentax????????

2011-07-01 Thread Adam Maas
Ricoh did get out of the SLR business during the AF era (to some
extent, they actually continued to sell MF film SLR's until recently,
but the body was a Cosina) although they did have a longtime presence
in the high-end compact side of things with their GR compacts (which
are simply awesome). But they're been increasingly involved in selling
high-end compacts and mirrorless systems. Buying Pentax gives them
back an SLR system in a mount they know intimately and gives them
access to the manufacturing capacity and sales structure they've
lacked outside asia.

This isn't a repeat of Konica-Minolta. Ricoh's only buying the camera
division where Konica wanted only the business imaging side of Minolta
and also had been trying to get rid of their own Camera division for
decades (despite it being both a major film producer and a producer of
rather innovative cameras including the only truly modern M mount body
in the Hexar RF).

It would be a much bigger annoyance in these parts if it were bad news for
Pentax owners, but I assume it will be good news for all concerned.

I do hope that it is a plus for all concerned. :-)

Ricoh's a pretty good sized company. They have a lot of camera and
lens expertise, just not in the DSLR or Medium Format Digital space.
My impression is that they've been doing pretty well and have not been
at risk, but I haven't been looking at that. It's Pentax that's had
the financial problems and has now been bought twice. So I think we
have to consider this from the Ricoh perspective, since it is Ricoh
buying the Pentax brand and technology from Hoya, not Pentax driving
the deal. Pentax is essentially being split up, the camera portion of
the company separated from the medical portion.

I feel the mainstream SLR domain is coming to a close and the
mirrorless digital camera on the rise. In the mirrorless domain, Ricoh
has been very innovative with the GXR system. The Camera Module A12
with Leica M mount is just about ready to ship for the GXR system: it
would be extremely easy to provide adaptation for K-mount (it already
exists through third party adapters!) and not too much more daunting
to build a dedicated K-mount version, with more features dedicated to
the Pentax K mount lens specifics. And creating dedicated A12 camera
modules with integrated lenses like the DA21, FA43, DA40, DA70 (all
great, compact optics) would be another way to expand Ricoh's GXR
system more swiftly than for them to develop the optics from scratch.

It will be very interesting to see where this goes. I do hope it's a
positive for everyone ... including the medical products market!

OT: DRAT!

2011-07-01 Thread John Sessoms
I've got my final print portfolio for school due in two weeks. Working
on one of the images to make everything *PERFECT* before I send it off
to the lab for printing, I kept getting these strange errors in
Photoshop No more virtual tiles can be allocated. Took a while to
figure out my hard-disk was FULL!

I ended up moving my image files from 2010 2011 except for the small
number of files I need for school off onto the NAS as a temporary
solution. But it took 4 hours to copy them over. I just gave up and went
to bed.

And now the disk cleanup is going to take another hour (according to
Windoze estimate). It's been running for half an hour already.

Reading PDML while I wait for the computer to finish fooling around.

I sure would like to get back to work. I've got a bit to get done yet
before I can go out looking for more portfolio quality images this 4th
of July weekend.

Computers can do some wonderful things, maybe this is even one of them...

http://www.howtobearetronaut.com/2011/06/colourized-america-1862-1923/

Sometimes BW is an artistic or editorial choice, so IMNSHO colorizing
something like Casablanca is heresy, but for most of the history of
photography there was no choice, so I'm kind of OK with this.

Some of these the colors are a bit vivid. I think slightly more subdued
colors similar to the old tinting oils would work better. It doesn't
bother me all that much. But, the originals are still preserved intact,
so I don't see it as much different than hand coloring BW prints with
oils.

I have watched the colorized version of the Maltese Falcon. It looked
like BW film had been hand tinted frame by frame, and that the colors
had faded after a while. Wasn't overblown or garish like some of these are.

It didn't detract from the film, nor keep me from enjoying the film
again in BW.

Can anyone tell for certain if Hoya is keeping Pentax's medical division for
themselves? I'm pretty sure that's a big source of Pentax's revenue, and it
would really suck if they lost it.

John

Hoya is almost certainly keeping the medical division. They originally
bought Pentax to get the medical division.

If you go back to the period before the Hoya-Pentax deal was finalized,
you'll find one of the fears of Pentax users had back then was that Hoya
would keep Pentax for a couple of years and then dispose of the camera
company.

And that the Pentax camera division would be weaker because of the loss
of revenue from the medical division.

Maybe the 645D will put the camera division in better position than was
feared ... or maybe not.

The light is, I think, on the harsh side. It shows in the shadows of the
hair, blown cheek, hard shadow on her leg and wrist, etc.
This may be what you were going for, in case we merely disagree on how
to light this sort of thing.

What I like to do is use a really big softbox for the main, my favourite
is a 60 round one, and then position a harder light right in front of
it so it is on, or at least near, the same axis as the big light.
Adjusting the balance between the two gives really nice shadow control.
You blew the background out really nicely, it looks like she is on a
rear lit Plexiglas sweep., which are a lot of fun to light with gels.

Hmm. So I guess that, in light of the purchase of Pentax by Ricoh,
this thread about the Ricoh GXR's Leica M-mount module (I believe it
is officially called the Camera Mount A12 or something like that)
was not so off-topic after all.

Even without a dedicated Pentax camera module, with the M-mount module
on the GXR you'll be able to use Pentax lenses on the GXR easily -
Pentax M42 and K mount to Leica M adapters already exist. ]:-)

And if it isn't, I can pull a Godfrey and switch to Nikon, or whatever system
catches my fancy. My K-5 has good enough performance for most of my
photographic needs to last me quite a few more years. By the time it wears out
there will be plenty of mirrorless systems with better performance, and
adapters, possibly even ones with screwdrive autofocus, so that I can continue
to use my lenses. There are some distinct physical advantages to a mirrorless
system, primarily the shorter registration distance allowing sharper, fast wide
glass. I am annoyed that I don't have an f/1.4 standard. Who knows, maybe in
a couple of years I'll have several mirrorless systems in a variety of sensor
sizes depending upon how much depth of field I want for a particular field of
view. When I want a lot of DoF, I'll use the 4/3 sensor, when I want shallow,
I'll use the 24x36.

In the meantime, at least Ricoh has some history with K-mount lenses. I think I
actually have a Ricoh body buried in my gear someplace.

So,Final shameless Mummy Plug (I promise)! I just realised that today

you
haven't already, please vote for our beautiful Molly-Rose Mayer-Love, she
is

Himalayas for a week whilst she grieves! lol.

The link to the site to vote is here: www.milkybar.com.au and she is the

Thanks guys, hopefully we will have some great news to announce come

I'm somewhat hopeful about this. The traditional digital market
(How's that, huh) of PS and DSLRs is being eroded in two ways:
cellphones will increasingly replace the PS and mirrorless will cut
into the DSLRs. Ricoh and Pentax could make a pretty good mirrorless

My primary and preferred 35mm system cameras for most of the time from
1968 to 2001 were Nikon SLRs and Leica RFs. While I've owned and used
successfully a lot of other SLR system cameras, if I felt I needed to
move to another SLR system again it would be to Nikon and the D700
body at present. I know their lenses are up to the task.

But lately I'm thinking mobility more and more, and wanting smaller,
less intrusive cameras and lens kits. That's what got me going for the
Ricoh GXR. Once the M-lens module ships, I'll likely be working with
two or three M-bayonet lenses most of the time and will be in the
market for a Leica M again at some point down the line. I'm not ready
to dispense with SLRs entirely yet, but I see the time is coming as
the mirrorless world ramps up in responsiveness. The quality is
already there. And, like Cotty and others, I can't see any TTL system
being the same thing as a coupled optical rangefinder system: they are
just different beasts.

 I'm somewhat hopeful about
 this.  The traditional digital market
(How's that, huh) of PS and DSLRs is being eroded in
 two ways:
cellphones will increasingly replace the PS and
 mirrorless will cut
into the DSLRs.  Ricoh and Pentax could make a pretty
 good mirrorless
 body with Pentax optics.

It does for stuff like big landscape shooting or when I want to make

They just want to fart and curse!
should we blame the government or blame society?
or should we blame the images on tv?

NO! blame canada, blame Canada

an' flapping heads so full of lies
blame Canada, blame Canada
we need to form a full assault, its Canada's fault

don't blame me for my son stan
he saw that darn cartoon and now he's off to join the clan!
and my boy eric once had MY picture on his shelf
but now when I see him he tells me to fuck myself

well, blame Canada, blame Canada
it seems that everything's gone wrong
since Canada came along
blame Canada, blame Canada
they're not even a real country, anyway

my son could've been a doctor or a lawyer it's true
instead he burned up like a piggy on a barbecue
should we blame the matches, should we blame the fire?
or the doctors who allowed him to expire?

HECK NO!

Blame Canada, blame Canada
with their hockey hullaballoo
and their bitch Anne Murray too
Blame Canada, shame on Canada!
the smut we must stop
The trash we must smash
laughter and fun
must all be undone
we must blame them and cause a fuss

Re: Is Ricoh Going to Buy Pentax????????

This question is just too subjective. I'm happy with the Olympus VF-2, but it's
still different from an optical finder. Evidently, the hybrid in the X100 won't
easily adapt to interchangeable lenses. For me, the smaller size is worth the
use of EVF.

EVFs will get better as long as early adopters continue to fund the
research. It's no different to anything else, like sensors and so on, that
were crap to start with, but have continued to improve. EVFs however have a
long way to go in my opinion until they're as good as an optical coupled
rangefinder, or even a reflex ground glass image.
