PESOs: London Exhibition

2013-01-13 Thread Chris Mitchell
Bob W and I went to see Everything Was Moving: Photography from the
60s and 70s at the Barbican.
http://www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery/event-detail.asp?ID=13613

It was excellent, but huge - over 400 photographs from 12
photographers. Highlights for me were:

- Bruce Davidson's pictures from the Alabama freedom rides. Very
powerful and captures perfectly the divided community.
- William Eggleston (he who polarised PDML opinion in Chicago 2010). I
just love his realism and Bob and I commented on the influence he must
have had on the likes of Magnum man, Martin Parr
- Larry Burrows's pictures from Vietnam. I've seen them in newspapers,
but seeing the massive prints brings out their full impact.

If you're thinking of going, you'll have to be quick; it ends today
(Jan 13) sadly. But you'll get the bonus of seeing a steam train
running on the Underground at Barbican station to celebrate the 150th
anniversary.

A couple of PESOs shot from the hip to avoid the "no phtography in here" police:
http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/Barbican_1/slides/DSCF0243.html
http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/Barbican_1/slides/DSCF0257.html

The attentive among you might see that they were taken on my new Fuji
X-Pro 1. More of that later when I've given it a proper workout.

RE: PESOs: London Exhibition

2013-01-13 Thread Bob W
Chris,

everything in those pictures seems to be moving! Here's mine from the day,
taken with my phone:

That Fuji is a fantastic camera - very impressive indeed.

Thanks to Chris and family for putting up with me yesterday at such short
notice. I had earlier said I couldn't come because of a prior commitment.
However, when I turned up at my prior commitment I discovered I was a week
early! So that left the day free to see the exhibition, which is enormous.
Like Chris, I particularly enjoyed the shots of South Africa, and the
freedom rides. And Eggleston, one of the greats who changed the way we look
at the world.

Re: Didn't buy a camera today

2013-01-13 Thread Jens
A used lightmeter is quite cheap these days. Get a Gossen Lunasix F, for
instance. Or one of those electronic meters from Minolta. You might get one for
perhaps 50 USD.
It's much better for the job. Anyway - I bought a K-01 as soon as the hit the
markedplace last year. I was very disappointed - since I found out I couldn't
live without an optical viewfinder. I soon got a collapsable hood for the LCD,
which helps a little in bright sunlight.

I still prefere using my K-5/K20D for most stuff, but for panoramas the K-01 is
very nice, since it has the direct veiw turned on all the time. So I'm keeping
it. The image quality is excellent - and I can still use all my fine Pentax
lenses.

So, if you can live without the optical viewfinder - buy a K-01.

As for the lightmeter - I'd rather exchange the 67 for a 67II - they are not
very expensive these days. The only problem is getting high quality scans -
this is a MUST IMO, if you want to seriously compete with 16 MegaPixel digital
images.

As I can't afford an Imacon (Hasselblad) scanner, I get my negs scanned in
Germany. But I'm still having trouble getting good enough scans. Pro scans made
in Denmark cost appr. 125 USD for each frame!!! If I had to make a living from
photography, I'd get a 645D - or a Phase One camera. But I don't :-)

Regards
Jens

Yes but my point is this: is he actually looking at a photo on a wall,
or is he staring at nothing, his head merely positioned downwards? And
does it matter?

If you look at his left elbow, there is the slightest of overlaps with
the end of the wall. This puts him actually further away from the
camera, and in fact he is the other side of the wall, apparently looking
at a photo on his side. And of course he is thinking about it all, so I
guess the message of Boris's pic is of deep though in a photo gallery.

I like the juxtaposition between the man and the photo of the woman's
face, but the framing and the angle just aren't quite there for me. The
crop on the left is a tad loose. I'd concentrate more on the man and the
face pic if I could.

Yes, but Boris, you were there and you know exactly where the chap was
standing - as a viewer to the pic, I don't. When I first saw the photo,
I assumed the man was in deep though about something he had just seen,
his head angled down and staring at the floor that was apparently in
front of him, unobstructed by the wall which is apparently at his left.
It was only when I looked closer and saw his elbow was slightly obscured
by the wall's end that I realised he was actually further away from the
camera and therefore actually behind said wall and then obviously
studying a photo or perhaps reading a caption.

I'm sending you a slightly doctored version off list which, when viewed
objectively next to your original, shows two completely different photographs!

Paul, very interesting consideration if you ever find yourself needing
to edit a pic while out and about with no macbook laptop. Shoot the pic
in jpeg and using either an eyefi card or something like an Airstash
(q.v.) you can wifi the pic to your iphone and then use something like

Now *that's* an interesting concept. Of course the iPhone is a
computer with a fancy light sensor attached. :-)

Sadly, AFAICT none of these apps works as a flash meter, and besides
using it with a film camera, that is the main reason for having a
light meter. It's my reason anyway. In fact, the iPhone lightmeter
apps cannot do:

- spot metering
- incident flash
- flash/ambient ratios
- flash triggering
- readings triggered by sync cable
- cine readings

Nor, unfortunately can the cheapie used flashes like Jens mentioned;
eg Gossen Lunasix F.

Still very happy I picked up a Polaris flash meter at a good price.
Does everything but cine.

Tethered shooting problems

2013-01-13 Thread Jens
Having had problems instatling and getting Pentax Camera Utility 4 + Pentax
Remote Assistant to work properlymy pro. (As I don't have the original PCU4 CD
yet, this might be one reason for my problems). I have upgraded the K20D
firmware properly. But I cant find the original USB cord for the K20D, so I'm
using the one from my K-5 - should this cause any problems? Aren't the cords
(K-5, K20D, K-01) compatible?

I have read, that I need to upgrade Windows 7 as well as download software to
allow Windows 7 to work in "XP-mode", in order to make PDCU+PRA work. Is this
true?

Then I downloaded the third-party software PK_tether. It worked right away. Is
this dangerous to use - vould i tharm my camera?

Is there a tethered method, thheat will actually show the viewfinder image on
the computerscreen (with Pentax cameras, naturally).

I am using K20D for this purpose.

I found that PK tether works differently accordiing to wher I store the program.
Where suld I store it. ive

I'd really appreciate any help you might offer as well as experience you ant to
share :-)

Thanks in advanace.

You mean sending pics to the iphone from the mac? Direct in the house,
or anywhere?

All the pics I want on my iphone I handle manually.

EG: I created a folder called 'iPhone Pics' and I keep it tucked away,
and have it so it always appears on the left sidebar in any open window.
Then it's easy to access quickly.

Then, with the iphone attached via USB cable, I set the default 'sync
photos from' folder to my 'iPhone Pics'.

Incidentally you can create folders within that folder, and so I have
many folders separating subjects like one for landscapes, one for
portraits etc.

Then it's just a case of dropping jpegs into those folders straight on
my mac desktop and syncing the iPhone.

A few notes: I only ever sync locally to my mac, I don't use iCloud.
Also, the folder and pics in those folders managed via the mac desktop
can't be edited while on the iPhone. EG, if you want to delete a pic,
you do it on the Mac, and then sync the phone.

display window. Under photos tab, identify which (if any) photo folders you
want to be synched with the phone. Work your way through the tabs to find where
to turn on/off music synching, turn off autosynch-when-phone-is-connected, etc.

Re: A logistics problem

2013-01-13 Thread Steve Cottrell
On 13/1/13, Paul Stenquist, discombobulated, unleashed:

>How do you do that? Via a menu on the Mac?
>Sorry for being dense. But I'm new to iPHone.

I actually missed out some info, so I'll repost the previous info,
amended, and more basic.

Start on your Mac desktop. Create a new folder (in the Finder, File>New
Folder) OR if you already have a folder designated by iTunes as your
folder that iTunes syncs photos from, use that if you like. As long as
you know what folder is the folder iTunes uses to sync photos to/from
with your iPhone, and where it is on your Mac, then you can do the following:

On my Mac, (I run 10.6.8) I created a folder called 'iPhone Pics' and I
keep it [anywhere - on the desktop if you like].

I keep it out of the way in my home folder. But to make it easily
accessible, I dragged the icon of my iPhone Pics folder into a sidebar
of an open window. (To organise the sidebar better, in the Finder go to
Finder>Preferences and see the 'sidebar' button to tidy up). This way,
every time I open a new window, my iPhone Pics folder is right there on
the left in the sidebar. I click once on that and then I can see the
contents of the iPhone Pics folder, and add to it or delete things.

To tell iTunes that I wanted the 'iPhone Pics' folder to be the default
folder so that every time I sync my iPhone with my Mac, it uses 'iPhone
Pics as the one single folder - the master pics folder, if you like -
you simply have iTunes open with the iPhone plugged up by USB, and in
the bar on the left of the iTunes window, select 'iPhone', and then see
the tabs on the right, click on 'photos'. The first option is for
selecting a folder to sync photos with. I navigated to my iPhone Pics
folder, and now that is set as the default folder for syncing all photos
on my iPhone.

Hope this makes sense.

Re: Tethered shooting problems

2013-01-13 Thread P. J. Alling

I think the cords are incidental from the *ist-Ds to the K--5xxx.

Sorry I can't help you on the compatibility issue between Remote
assistant and the OS but I can't help but expect that there will be
problems. Pentax pretty much dropped support for Remote Assistant after
the K-20D was discontinued. There is no provision to display live view
over the USB tether, I thought that was BS that Pentax wouldn't match
the features that other manufactures included, but I guess their
philosophy is that they build field cameras not studio cameras. Why
supply functionality that few will use that will just add to the cost of
the product.

I don't think PK_tether will harm you camera, I'd worry that some of the
commands won't work correctly.

I've been using PDCU4 for several years now and I don't think that
Remote Assistant properly integrates with any version after 3.X. I''m
also pretty sure that Remote Assistant 3.x doesn't officially support
the K-7 or the K-5 cameras. It may work with them much as Camera
Assistant 1.0 seemed to operated the entire *ist-D[x] family even
thought it only officially supported the *ist-D.

using the one from my K-5 - should this cause any problems? Aren't the cords

I have read, that I need to upgrade Windows 7 as well as download software to allow
Windows 7 to work in "XP-mode", in order to make PDCU+PRA work. Is this true?

Then I downloaded the third-party software PK_tether. It worked right away. Is
this dangerous to use - vould i tharm my camera?

Is there a tethered method, thheat will actually show the viewfinder image on

I am using K20D for this purpose.

I found that PK tether works differently accordiing to wher I store the program.

X-Pro 1, eh?

2013-01-13 Thread William Robb
I almost think I am in the market for a small but good quality digital
camera, and am really attracted to the Fuji cameras right now.

I know a few here are using various models.
Here is my criteria:
Must have an optica viewfinder (a hybrid is OK, as long as there is an
optical option).
Interchangable lenses would be nice, in which case a good selection of
primes would be a requirement, though if it is a fixed lens, it would need
to be a medium wide to medium telephoto zoom.

Obviously, it must shoot in some sort of raw format.
Video not important, but if it's there, fine.
Good high ISO capability. The K5 has spoiled me for being able to shoot high
ISO, and there is no way I want to go back to being afraid to shoot above
ISO 400.

Thanks for any advice.

Without a doubt the X-Pro 1 sounds like it fits the bill. I have the
Baby X10 the build quality and pictures out of it are amazingly good.
The X20 is supposed to be streets ahead because of a new sensor, and
even has optical viewfinder with info overlay.

I don't want interchangeable lenses anymore, just don't do that kind of
shooting. At some point I will be getting an X100s without a doubt. I
may even sell the X10 and get an X20 - the 2 cameras together will
satisfy my picture taking needs.

My biggest question is why I am not considering anything from Pentax :-(

Oh well.

Very true, PJ.

Thanks for the input P.J.

Pentax seems to be developing ONE studio camera, though - the 645D.
I think the RAW converter companies (Lightroom, Phase One) could very well make
tethering software and tool for third party brands (not just Phase One, Leaf)

Re: PESO - Still Smiling (bike messenger content)

2013-01-13 Thread Igor Roshchin

Hi Frank,

Sorry, I can't help sharing: my reaction to "still smiling" is
the association with two old children's jokes:

1. Teacher, telling students about safety: when you are at the construction
site, you are supposed to wear a hard hat. When a brick fell on Nick who
was wearing a hard hat, he just smiled.
A student: "Yeah, he is still smiling".

2.
-- Our neighbor's daughter is always smiling.
-- That's because they pull her pigtails really tight.

Back to the photo:
It's a nice smile well captured.
It looks like you used fill-in flash (?), which is done well, providing
well lit face without any shadows.

1. I would straighten the shot a bit by rotating it slightly CW.
(right now the walls on the right are vertical, but the
vertical structures behind the guy (are leaning toward the left).
This provide slightly more natural position/angle for the guy
(including that for his left leg [on the right for us]).

I am not sure, but I might consider doing lens correction for the lens
distortion, so that the poles are not leaning outward as much.
At ~21mm focal length, there is noticeable wide-angle lens effect.

2. Additionaly, I'd think about two improvements in the composition:
a) The empty right half of the frame in this case doesn't quite work for
me. (It could've if he was facing that way.)
b) The clutter of the detail behind his shoulder and head is a bit
distracting (there is not enough separation, so those things are growing
out of his shoulder and head). The two poles to the side are less
of a problem (and they create ambience, but they are also not separated
enough.

I would've made a step to the left so that it is the pedestrian walk
that is behind the guy (being careful not to have "Little Anthony's"
growing out of his ear[s]), and would also consider opening up the
aperture to blur the background a bit. (Although, f/4 that you used
might be the largest opening for your lens, - I don't know what you
were using.)

I hope you don't mind these suggestions.

Cheers,

Igor

The 645 was a studio or field camera, but I think the 645D is very much
seen as a field camera by Pentax. I also don't think that the imaging
sensor in the 645D even supports live view. The Hardware in the K-5 and
K20D might support Live View through the USB tether, however the
firmware doesn't. Maybe somebody has produced a hacked firmware version
that would allow them to work that way. I think that USB 2.0 probably
supports the bandwidth necessary, but I'm really too lazy to look up the
specifications and do the math today.

Re: ot browsers

2013-01-13 Thread Jostein Øksne

Hmmm...
I just read about Apple uninstalling old Java versions from Macs, and both
Apple and Oracle keeping silent about why. Newest version was left operable,
afaik. But I have no idea if this automatically applies to Firefox too.
You may need to disable the old versions manually. Firefox will list all the
installed versions of Java among the Extensions.

Ok, so i'm sure every one knows i'm geek challenged, but just throwing
this out there as i have checked everything i know to check.
I have several problems with fire fox, ya really i do:-), that do not
happen in safari. In fire fox i cannot access any of the buttons in
photo dot net to up load pictures, but everything works in safari. On
FB several of the games i play, one being songpops, the songs do not
load, but everything is fine in safari. Any ideas, preferences to turn
on or off. I'm stumped. Firefox version 17. something. I thought
upgrading to the newest version a few weeks ago would help but nope.

I've noticed this dreadful mangling increasingly recently. When one uses
'one' as a subject, then one must only use 'one' as the pronoun in the rest
of the phrase. So it should be "One incurs no pain when one risks what one
does not possess."

So come along, chaps, get with it, or must one get mediaeval on yo' ass?

I may have taken a few good photos along the way. Nothing in NE New Mexico

If USB 2.0 is sufficient for tethering Canon and Nikon DSLRs with live

Hi William

My X-Pro1 is a present for a big birthday so I'm a very lucky chap. It
fits the bill as you described for interchangeable lenses. It's APS-C
so the same crop factor as the Pentax bodies. The 3 lenses (18mm, 35mm
and 60mm) that were launched with it are highly regarded. I've got the
35mm and a 18mm on order as part of a 2 lenses for 1 offer in the UK.
I've also got a K-mount adaptor on order so will be able to use my MF
/ aperture ring based lenses in manual focus and stop down metering.
There's now a consumer level zoom and many more lenses in the
pipeline.

Size wise it's not the smallest in the Fuji range - with the 35mm lens
on it's the same overall dimensions as my MX with the 50mm F1.7 lens
on it. It's the same height as the MX's pentaprism s the MX looks
smaller because of the shoulders either side of the pentaprism (if
that makes any sense).

It's feels lighter than the MX, but the build quality is superb and it
feels well engineered and very solid.

The shots that I did at the Barbican exhibition were at ISO3200 and
I'm more than happy with the quality. At 1600 it's truly excellent.
Much better than my K7, but I can't compare with a K5.

I haven't had it for long enough to do a proper review, but initially
I'm very impressed. Of course there are quirks - there are the usual
gripes on the forums, but nothing that I'm not prepared to live with.
The big one that they're all on about is the lack of full support in
Lightroom (Google it for a happy hour or two's reading) but I've been
using LR without seeing any issues. It's light to carry around and the
lenses are small and light. With the ability to put my Pentax lenses
on it, I can see it becoming my main body with the K7 as backup.

I know a couple of people with the X10, including Cotty, and I get
very good feedback about it. The fast zoom is seen to be excellent and
it looks as though the X20 is going to be a significant improvement.

Hope this helps

Chris

It certainly does help. I suspect that I will probably look pretty seriously
at the X20 when it becomes available. The X-1Pro is pretty expensive, I'm
not sure if I'll be able to justify it or not. I'm not in a huge rush, so I
can wait and see what other lenses they make for the thing.

he is alright and we'll see him soon on the list again), Bill Wrobb,

I've been drawing up a wishlist of features that I'd like to see in a
DSLR/EVIL. One of them is wi-fi, with an open standard for tethering,
uploading files and controlling strobes.

This would mean that you could use a smart phone as a remote display/control,
if for example you were holding your camera over your head on a monopod, or
getting a macro shot with the camera in a very awkward place.
