I have always liked my Pentax gear but the Q reminds me of my ME Super that was just a ton of fun, even though it had limitations. But I like the Q better. The issues with the small sensor are there, but they haven't been a major limitation to me. If we ever get some snow I hope to try out the Q for snow crystals. I tweaked my extreme macro set up for the Q - except now it is not an extreme macro setup, just a macro setup. I figure that the small sensor means that I will be able to do larger snow crystals at 1:1 magnification and would rarely have to go much past 2:1. (Really big crystals could even be less than 1:1.) That will greatly simply the process since with an APS C camera the snow crystals require 4:1 to 10:1 in extreme cases. Using flash I can shoot at a low ISO and hopefully minimize noise. Focus peaking looks like it will be a huge asset as well. I'm a bit concerned about the electronic shutter but will see how that plays out - I can always cut the ambient light and just use the flash. So, if it ever snows I'll give it a try. GESO - Snow Crystals Snaps (extreme macro)
We've had pretty steady lake effect snow this week and last night for a few hours I was able to catch it while it was producing well formed single crystals. I stated out playing with the Q but when I saw that there were some good subjects I switched over to the tried and true K-5 setup. You can see the keepers here: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/ Permalink: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/2013-snow-crystals The setup was the K-5, ~200mm of tubes and extension (varies between shots) and a reverse mounted Sigma 50mm EX macro. Lit with an AF360FGZ in manual mode at 1/32 power. Exposure controlled via ISO on the camera - these are mostly at ISO 100 with a couple at 80 and one at 200. Thanks for looking! Mark PS: Regarding the Q... I found that the flash *can* be set to manual mode provided that you set it to manual before mounting it on the camera. Once mounted only P-TTL and SB are available. But if you turn on the flash and set it to manual it will stay in manual until the flash is powered off or the setting is changed. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: IR on the K10-D
I have never regretted buying my converted K10D. I have seen the dreaded K-10 banding problem in the IR shots once or twice, but as with the regular K10D it has not proven to be a problem and only arises when I try to really push the exposure. I did not know that they calibrated the AF system to a specific lens. I have used mostly the 16-45 f4 and 18-55. IMO, the 18-15 is better in this case. The 16-45 gets a bright spot in the center - more than a spot, an area in the center of the frame. Look at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in this series for an example - http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/more-infrared-from-chestertown-maryland After that trip I started using the 18-55 and did not see that problem again. Igor, it is hard to tell why, but if you look at any such web community (Photo.RU, Flickr, 500px, whatever) and specifically the top 10, top 12, top whatever, you will see that the visual pattern is very similar. Usually very much processing applied, garish colors, high contrast, with subjects that are also pretty standard... Personally I don't like pictures such as the ones I described above... And most certainly it has no implications whatsoever on the preferences of the rest of population :-). On 1/23/2013 7:31 PM, Igor Roshchin wrote: Whatever connoisseurs might say, the large portion of people do enjoy bright, saturated colors. Every so often, PDMLers criticize examples of somebody's oversaturated photos. But there must a be a reason why those things sell. I just looked over the first few pages of the most popular photos on 500px.com: http://500px.com/popular Almost all of them (if not all) have saturated colors (or high-contrast BW) I am sure psychologists wrote papers and books on this topic, I didn't even try to google it, but I suspect the reason is simple: bright colors are easier for consumption, the same way as sweet foods/drinks attract attention of adults and especially kids. In a similar way, many people start drinking wines by liking the sweet ones. Pentax In The Mall
There's a big mall in Fargo, ND that had a Ritz camera store that closed this past fall. When that store closed I thought that we had seen the last of the stand alone retail camera stores in our area. As it turns out a camera store owner out of Bismarck, ND took over the space and reopened around Christmas time under the banner of Bob's Cameras. Why is this a important...well when I went in to check it out , there in the behind the counter display shelves and sandwiched between the Nikon and Canon gear, was a pretty complete line of Pentax equipment. He had a K-5II, K-30, a couple of Q's, a 55-300mm and 12-24mm lens. I hadn't seen the red Pentax logo in a local camera store in years and had been led to believe that Pentax had gone completely to Internet sales. You did, but the biggest DUH is for me... I thought I was using the k-5, but had really grabbed the k-7! It was early this morning, we were rushing out to my son's track meet, I picked up the camera on my desk, and off we went, forgetting that the k-5 was set up on the tripod across the room, and not noting the different color strap... Imagine my aggravation/surprise/dismay when setting up for a few shots at the indoor track, and not being able to dial in 16,000 iso, as usual. I should have tried some panning shots. I just bought a Pentax K-01
Well, there's an email subject that I never expected to post... After last night's snow crystal shoot and continuing experiments with the Q I thought that just having a body with the sensor and image quality of the K-5 and focus peaking of Q would be ideal. It took a while but suddenly I realized - the K-01 has all that plus it is on sale at a deep discount. So I just order a white K-01 from BH. Added the 40mm pancake for another $90 as that seemed like a bargain as well. The weather here is shooting up into the 50's in the next couple of days and then is predicted to plummet again with more lake effect snow. I'm hoping to have the K-01 setup ready for the next snow crystal shooting opportunity, hopefully in a week. I don't know if I will ever use this camera for anything but specialized macro shooting, but who knows? Thanks, Tom! I set a couple of bits of colored plastic on the flash and they really brightened things up. Thanks for looking - Mark On 1/26/2013 1:39 PM, Tom Cakalic wrote: Absolutely fabulous Mark! Thanks, Ken. I agree about cropping out the very bottom, but not about the windows. To me, they provide a bit of context. Re: GESO - Snow Crystals Snaps (extreme macro)
Great work Mark! The flakes look like they're almost melted. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: Mark C pdml-m...@charter.net Subject: GESO - Snow Crystals Snaps (extreme macro) We've had pretty steady lake effect snow this week and last night for a few hours I was able to catch it while it was producing well formed single crystals.
Re: Help! Can't get k-5 past 6400 iso...
Years ago, while on a business trip to San Antonio, Texas, I picked up a rental car, got to my inspection site, finished my job, got to my hotel and turned in for the night. In the morning I told the doorman I needed my car, told him what it was and waited for him to bring it to the door. I got in and was half way to the airport before I realized that it was the same make model as my rental - but it wasn't my car. I immediately returned to the hotel and retrieved my rental vehicle. When I got to the rental car return facility, I mentioned my incident to the attendant and he said it happens all the time - someone tries to return a different vehicle then they rented. He mentioned, in fact they have had people trying to return other rental company's cars.
