PESO - Prepared for Battle (messenger content)

2013-02-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I didn't get nearly as many photos on Friday as I had hoped because (a) I was
working and spent much of my time underground on the subway, and, (b) there
were far fewer messengers on the road. Many clients were closed or closed early
so the messengers spent a lot of "standing by".

This is the only "environmental portrait" I got. Jason's attire reminded me of
armour, hence the title:

RE: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?

2013-02-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I suppose I don't count because I am not a gear head. Other than the low ISO I
am so happy with my K10d...

But there is one reason I would want full frame: wide angle would be wide
again. My Zenitar semi-fisheye would be a "real" 16mm lens again.

That would be cool...

Cheers,
frank

--- Original Message ---

From: Steve Cottrell
Sent: February 7, 2013 2/7/13
To: pentax list
Subject: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?

I mean, aside from the obvious reasons like, bigger sensor, better image
quality, better use with lenses designed to work with a 36X24mm frame,
better lighting, better heating, better sewer systems, the roads (yes we
can't forget the roads)

Back in 2000, this camera came onto the scene:

and at the time, I was toting both the LX and the MX along with various
lenses and stuff. It was the first really 'affordable' DSLR and had I
not prevaricated for many months, I would have had one there and then.
Instead I waited to see what might be coming from Pentax - and so I
waited and waited. And nothing came.

And so in 2002, this came out:

and I could wait no longer. I jumped.

It was made of creaky plastic and it felt not a patch on the quality
metal construction of the MX and LX, but shooting with it was amazing.
No film! It was about £2000 GBP at the time and the premium paid over
and above a comparative film camera would have kept me in FP4 for years.
But it was digital and it was instant - I had a grin that lasted weeks.

I had the D60 for a while, but longed for better build quality and
features - exactly what I found in the 1D mark II (aps-h...1.3X crop).
That was a camera that fully met (and exceeded) all expectations. If I'd
stayed in the game of carrying a big system about with me, i would have
without doubt moved onto a 1Ds (full frame).

As it is, I sold up when times were hard, and in fact didn't really miss
it all.

My son has a 1DmIIn and some lenses, and good luck to him. Nice to play
with for a while, and I still mount a Pentax lens on it now and again if
I need to do some portraits, but I'm happier with my lil Fuji.

So what if Pentax brings out a FF camera - would I jump? i might...but why??

Well, the answer will probably surprise you and some will ridicule. It
has to do with a certain lens...

I still have my A*85/1.4 and I long for the time I can mount it to a
proper 36X24 Pentax body - simple as that. I'd be more than happy with
just that lens attached the whole time - and just for portraits. Daft innit!

But there you go - that's the way it is. So much for the photographic
tools theory. I keep a lens that waits for the right body to come along.
Who'da thought it.

I bet that if you took the same photographers and had them cover sports and
weddings as well, you would get a lot of the same parallels.

In high school, I competed on the speech team, in improvisational speaking.
One of the first tricks you learn is to have half a dozen canned speeches that
you can modify and tune to a given topic. I bet that photographers that
photograph improvisational subjects, whether they realize it or not, have a
tool kit of standard photographs and compositions that they know work, and can
use or adapt to a situation, without having to start from scratch.

I think that one of the biggest ways that the PDML has helped my photography is
that it gives me the opportunity to steal the tool kits from some very good
photographers. When I look at a scene, I can think about who I know that does
well photographing that sort of subject, and think about what one of their
photos would look.

knarF, have you seen any of the 'Fat Tire' bikes in use in the snow? They're
a rather specialized bike built specifically for travel in snow, sand or
just plain bushwacking - radically large tire - typically 26X4.0" - and
frame design to handle the larger tire. I first heard about them in Alaska
and now they're gaining popularity in the lower 48, in fact there is a race
series for them and a race was held recently in Traverse City area. This
link is to one of many fat tire bike builders.

there were far fewer messengers on the road. Many clients were closed or

I see your point. If I wanted to teach, I might use it as an example, but on
the other hand I think the result is important, not how I got there.

There are many ways to see and make a picture. Once I felt how the contrast
should be, there were a lot of different ways to get there. Just like, when I
was there in the forest the forest itself was not important. It was what I
wanted to show. Others would make something else, maybe better, but it wouldn´t
fit with what I saw.

I have taught some photography. Teaching rules seldom get far. Seeing other
pictures and wondering why I like or dislike them is a lot better.

And here I thought they called it a major event like the major award (the
leg lamp) in the 'Christmas Story'.

Dan, from what I heard, for the most part, the major event in the north east
was in fact a blizzard - winds in the 70&80 mph range and several hours
long. According to Wikipedia - the difference between a blizzard and a snow
storm is not the amount of snow but the strength of the wind.

Re: PESO -- Major Snow Event?

2013-02-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Blizzards are characterized by high winds. Traditionally sustained winds of 50
km/h (30 mph) were required along with heavy snow.

Now the measure is visibility - a combination of winds and snow that limits
visibility to 400 metres or yards is a blizzard.

I guess my problem with the whole "snow event " nomenclature is that we had a
perfectly useful and universally understood name for what eastern North America
just experienced: a "winter storm". "Snow event " seems like more of the
CNN-ization of our culture.

Silly, but I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep over it.

;-)

Cheers,
frank

one of the things that we have lost, and it is a loss, with digital
photography is the contact sheet. Professional photographers were almost
always happy to share their contacts with others. They were a way of getting
to know the thought processes that went into the end result. They were like
preliminary sketches for a painting, and are just as useful.

Of course, some photographers and some painters - Michelangelo is a good
example - didn't want people to see their contacts and sketches, they would
rather people thought their finished article was something miraculous that
sprang forth from their native genius fully formed.

People frequently misunderstand the word 'rule' in respect to composition,
grammar, and so on. A rule in this sense is just a statistical observation,
in the same way as, for example, the 'law' of gravity. The rule of thirds is
just an observation that people tend to prefer pictures composed this way.
If you apply some discipline to figuring out what you like and why, you will
discover some rules that work for you, and the chances are that they will
work for others too.

Blizzards are characterized by high winds. Traditionally sustained
winds of 50 km/h (30 mph) were required along with heavy snow.

Now the measure is visibility - a combination of winds and snow that
limits visibility to 400 metres or yards is a blizzard.

I guess my problem with the whole "snow event " nomenclature is that we
had a perfectly useful and universally understood name for what eastern
North America just experienced: a "winter storm". "Snow event " seems
like more of the CNN-ization of our culture.

Silly, but I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep over it.

Fun for me, too! And I appreciate all the advice and play time!

While I'm working on sorting through the photos, I figure I might as
well put up some old shots (I suppose this is technically GESO, but it's
all different exposures of the same shot):

write home about, but might be suitable for postcards.

To be honest, none of them work. The problem is one of dynamic range. The
moon is in full sunshine, so it's pretty much the sunny 16 rule:

f/16 at 1/ISO for the shutter speed.

The trees are completely backlit and need hella exposure. Not even the mighty
K-5 can handle this much dynamic range. As you can see, by the time you
crank up enough exposure to make out the leaves, the moon is completely blown
out, showing every glare and reflection in the lens. You might as well shoot
the leaves against a daytime sky.

One option would be to take two exposures, one set for the moon, one set for
the trees, and combine them in photoshop. This technique is called HDR, for
High Dynamic Range. It's usually misused and abused to create garishly tacky
images, but there are uses for it.

Another technique would involve using a strobe or something to light the
trees. But do note that even your darkest exposure has the moon so completely
blown out that there is nothing of interest there.

Another thing you could do, is shooting raw take an exposure somewhere between
the two, and using lightroom, push the contrast as hard as you can, darken the
blacks, whiten the whites and go for a shadow image.

In reality, there are some photo that simply don't work, and I'm afraid this is
one, or possibly ten, of them. Also, in cases like this, the important info is
the exposure data.

Do you or have you used polarized light and filters to shoot crystals

It's not bad. It's better than most restaurants at the same price. Thursday,

K20D hot pixel cluster

2013-02-10 Thread John Sessoms
I mentioned this several months ago, but didn't get any response. I
thought I'd bring it up again.

I've got a problem with a cluster of hot pixels on my K20D. It manifests
as a large white (or black ???) spot in the image.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/8462668719

Taking a look at the cluster in high magnification, it appears there are
150+ pixels affected.

It's there in EVERY image, although it seems to get worse with long
exposures. I haven't experimented to see if high ISO makes it worse as
well. With long exposures, the hot pixel cluster is accompanied by a hot
strip that extends completely across the image frame.

The cluster is reasonably easily handled in Photoshop, but the hot strip
is a genuine pain in the ass to clean out without leaving obvious traces.

Any thoughts on whether pixel mapping is going to make the problem
worse? I've thought about sending it off the Pentax service, but I don't
know if that would do any good or whether it would be worth the cost.

Do you suppose it's worth anything as parts?

Re: PESO Moon Shots (was Re: PESO Hawk in Flight)

2013-02-10 Thread P. J. Alling
All of your moon shots have the moon over exposed. The brightness range
is really too great to get anything except the moon properly exposed or
get the rest of the shot with some kind of correct exposure and let the
moon's exposure fall where it may. Those are your choices unless you're
looking to do some kind of composite image or some extreme form of HDR.

GESO: Blizzard at my house & a question re: cameras in winter

2013-02-10 Thread Christine Nielsen
Hi all,

The past few days have provided a nice break in the usual action
around here. I took the camera out yesterday, along with my shovel,
thinking I'd get a few neighborhood scenes... Well, it was harder than
I thought it would be, just getting out of my own yard... though I did
consider strapping some tennis rackets to my boots as snowshoes...

Anyway, a few shots here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/sets/72157632736739251/with/8464137448/

Now for my question...
I learned long ago that it's a good idea, after being out in the cold
with your camera, to bag it up in a ziploc & then let it come to room
temp for a couple of hours before using/retrieving sd card, etc. All
in the name of preventing condensation/moisture from getting into the
camera & messing with the electronics, etc.. Here's what I wonder:
1) How many of you do this?
2) For a weatherproof camera, like the k-5, is this "less necessary"?
Especially when combined with a WR lens...?

Thanks for your thoughts...

Using the sunny 16 rule gives you an 18% gray moon. Try f/11 @ 1/ISO.
Just for luck, try f/11 +1/3 and f/11 +2/3 at 1/ISO. One of those

Should I take film to Cyprus?

2013-02-10 Thread D. Glenn Arthur Jr.
Alas, I have fallen way, way behind this mailing list and another. Sorry
for being absent and for having missed so much of what y'all have been
discussing.

In April, my mother is going back to Cyprus for what she thinks will be
her last time, and taking me along for what will probably be my only
time (I was there as a toddler; don't remember it; doesn't count) -- I
can't see ever being able to afford to go on my own.

I'm taking the *istD, extra batteries, extra CF cards, a computer to
copy the CF cards onto ...

Here's the question: given that I've shot very little film recently
(only for a wedding I was paid to shoot a year or two ago) and I _still_
have lots of exposed film in my freezer waiting for funds for developing,
do y'all think I should take a film body or two with me anyhow?

My gut says yes, I might see something I want on ilm instead of digital
for some unforseen reason. My brain says don't over-pack, and digital
means not having to carry multiple bodies loaded with different kinds
of film. And Murphy whispers "backup camera" since I only have the one
DSLR.

(If I have any unexposed infrared film left in the fridge, that'll tip
the balance somewhat in favour of bringing the K2 or an H1a. Even as
early as April, I should have plenty to shoot in IR in the Mediterranean,
right?)

sleet storms, rather than snow storms.

Well, I really really love my Nikon P7100. I think a high-end P&S is a
good answer to the question about overpacking.

Some slide film advice?

2013-02-10 Thread Zos Xavius
I'm going to run a roll of velvia 100 that someone handed me the other day
through my zx-7. I will probably do nothing but mostly tripod landscapes and
what not. Since I will likely be using an older 50mm mostly, I will just have
center weighted metering at my disposal. I know that for slide film you expose
mostly for highlights since there is less latitude there. I guess I'm asking,
should I just have enough faith in that meter and try to center more on the sky
and lock and recompose? I could also use the k-5 to spot meter since I would
likely have it with me. I just don't have enough of a feel for this zx-7 as I
still have a decent amount of tri-x waiting to be developed. I think I am going
to try duplicating a few shots with the k-5 so I can compare digital vs slide
film. I also have some kodak porta vc pro 160. I'm guessing that can still be
developed, though I know its out of production if I heard correctly. I will
probably start with the porta first. My experience with film
is very limited since I started purely in digital years ago. I see there are
some film shooters here so I thought I would ask. With the digital cameras I
can spot meter if it is critical. No option for that here. I kind of love the
challenge of filma 67 would be a lot of fun so I'm looking at playing a bit
more with 35mm before I make the jump to 120.

PESO 2013 - Robot II First Roll - GDG

2013-02-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I took my walk on Saturday with my latest in camera acquisitions in my hands: a
vintage 1941 Robot II. One of the challenges of using this camera was figuring
out how to scan the 24x24mm format negatives efficiently. Took a bit of trial
and error, but I got VueScan to drive the Nikon Coolscan V film scanner just
right, to the point where I can scan a seven frame strip in less than ten
minutes.

I'm pleased with how this first roll has come out. This is the unedited scan
index sheet:

  http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto/8464414230/lightbox

The camera is a delight to use. Wind it up and you can shoot up to a dozen or
more exposures as fast as you can press the shutter release. Great for
capturing those fast moving facial expressions and moving subjects. I'm going
to have a lot of fun with it.

enjoy!

I say do it. The shots you take with the film will have to count a lot more and
you will be forced to take more time. If your budget is low, you probably don't
have many other options anyways. What do you have to lose? This is a once in a
lifetime opputunity, have some fun with it.

Just take one film body and supplement it with your dslr when lighting no
longer matches your film speed. Or get an mz-s and reload rolls at will. :)

RE: Some slide film advice?

2013-02-10 Thread John Coyle
I'd opt for focus, meter and recompose if you're going to use centre-weighted
metering, but a lot
depends on the type of sky you will have. I used to find that a clear blue sky
did not need any
adjustment to CW-metering, whereas a sky with clouds would probably need some
adjustment. Why not
bracket? Does the ZX7 not allow any other form of metering (it's so long
since I sold my ZX5 I
can't recall it's metering modes).
