Even with an embedded ICC profile the image won't render exactly the
same if you're viewing on one browser that is color managed and one
that isn't (that's why we have color management). As long as you've
exported your image in sRGB color space the difference should be
minimal.

Some time ago I authored a page to practically illustrate this (in a

Nice illustration.

The assumption is often made that Photoshop's "Save for Web" command
first converts to sRGB. The second diagram illustrates that this
isn't the case. To get around this I've set up a simple action for
web images that first converts to sRGB before calling the "Save to
Web" command.

Yes.

Spaceships "whoosh!"

And when they whoosh you can see the stars zip by them in a near 3D effect.
Despite the fact that in reality the nearest star is light years away and the
stars would appear far away and not moving through the sky, just as we see them
from earth (which is in fact whooshing through the cosmos as we speak - at
least it better be!).

The job of the foley artists is to provide the sound the audience
expects - or whatever will emphasize the action on screen - not
provide *real* sounds. That's why we get spaceships making whooshing
sounds in the vacuum of space and handguns making the sounds of field

I'm seeing a very slight difference - the colours of the lower image are
very slightly more muted. But it isn't a great difference. It doesn't look
as if the colour palette has been shifted between the images.

I'm seeing the same difference in Firefox (both with color management turned

Brian, are you using an IPS monitor? The slight difference in viewing
angle will give you different contrasts on any TN monitor.

Yeah, it's a TN monitor.

Changing the angle of view does indeed show the two images to be the

The worst offenders are the NCIS and Law & Order series. To me it's not the
shutter sound that grates, it's the motor drive film advance that drives me
nuts (except for the older reruns).

That, and basic camera handling technique, like not moving an inch in any
direction, yet firing off 3 or 4 frames, and moving in closer with a zoom lens
when all they needed to do is zoom the lens. Finally - where is the sound of
the lens/camera auto focusing? No one ever wraps their hand around a lens
barrel and twists it!

Garumph!

The two images look the same to me on my calibrated monitor using both
Firefox (color managed) and Internet Explorer. On my non-calibrated
machine (which uses the monitors default sRGB peofile as proxy for
actual calibration) they look the same in Firefox, Opera and IE.

I asked about calibration a while back and learned that IE is not color
managed. Firefox is but you have to enable it. There were a couple other
color managed browsers but I forget which were color managed since I use
firefox anyhow (and simply had to turn CM on.)

I'm sorry to hear that your Q is having problems. I bought my whole Q

hopefully that option is available to you. I have heard of cases where
leaving the batteries out for an extended period of time helped resolve
problems, but is likely a long shot.

Good luck and hope you are Q'd up again soon!

Re: Q 06 Telephoto Zoom

2013-03-04 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Toine and Brian. Over the weekend I realized that I have a
couple of Lens-baby close up lenses that are 37mm in diameter, so I
ordered the step down ring to test them out. I put the lens baby
diopters on the 15-45 zoom with a little tape and tried it, but it did
not seem too promising. It still seemed to be worth the $4 for the ring
to test it properly, though. I will probably wind up with the Raynox, as
it seems to get good reviews and is a multi-element lens, probably
better corrected. So I also got a ring for it and a 40.5 to 49mm step up
so I can use one of my existing polarizers on the Q. Now i need to find
a bag big enough to hold all this stuff but still a lot smaller than my
standard bags!

with 52 - 67mm lens objectives. How do you mount the Raynox onto the 40.5 mm

adapter?

This
is just another marvelous little Q lens - it retracts to be not much
larger
than the normal zoom, but to use it you have to turn the zoom ring to
extend
the front element a bit, so while in use it is maybe an inch longer than
the
standard zoom. The 15 to 45mm zoom range is equivalent to about 85 - 250
on
a full frame 35mm body. The two zooms, normal prime and fish eye make for
a
nice little (very little) kit. And at f2.8 you can even get some bokeh
with
this lens.

A quick test shot -

PESO - The Ice Emperor

2013-03-04 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I was looking through the photos I took at Toronto's annual ice race one last

Alberto won four years consecutively about ten years ago. He is still fast

(all the right people would have to fall). Still, he shows up every year, races
hard and just has a great time. A few people dress up but the Ice Emperor has
the best costume each year.

I know I showed a few others of him in earlier GESOs but this gives a good look

But my DSLRs do make a somewhat similar noise when I use them.

It's only really the sound of the shutter being re-armed, and
not a mechanical film advance, but it's the same kind of noise.

Arguing that "they got it wrong" makes me sound like one of those
sad anorak types who complain that the motorcycle noise on a film
sound track obviously can't be from the bike being shown, because
the tappet noise is far too loud for anything except a Norton (or
that the plane on screen has Rolls Royce engines, but the sound is
of a General Electrics turbofan).

This just in - films & TV get a lot of small details wrong.

Since a digital SLR doesn't really have a natural sound of its own the way a
film SLR does, it has to be silent or invented. If you're going to invent it
then almost any sound will do, like mobile phone ringtones. But putting in
the sound of a farting badger, or a group of medieval nights going "Ni!"
would be silly. It makes sense to have it sound like the thing it replaced,
just as people still use the effect of a needle scratching a vinyl disk for
sound coming to a sudden crash, even though most people under about 40 may
never have used a vinyl record player, and may not even know what the sound
originally signified.

On my system it doesn't. The other big question is if anyone else has

I just received the entire set this morning. Pretty neat. The lenses are even
keyed so they (should) only be set and locked one way.

I would have the same concerns about having any of these on my camera's
hot-shoe as I do with the GPS module. Too easy to break while installed.

Even spreading the window over two 20+ inch screens, it doesn't jump up to a
size any larger than the first jump, which occurs between 12" and 20" width. So
it's not a limitation of your upload, but the ability of the site to
accommodate the width.

I believe this should be as simple as ensuring that you always select Color
Space: sRGB under File Settings when you export images for publishing.
Since the default colour space is assumed to be sRGB when none is provided,
your images should render the same with or without EXIF.

But then life is never simple is it? :)

The sound-effect for most every digital camera (including cellphones) tends to
use this very same sound.

I sorta "get it" as an effect on a small electronic box so you have positive
feedback that the image-taking has occurred. I DON'T 'get it' as a foley

I'm sorry to hear that your Q is having problems. I bought my whole Q
setup used and never thought about having to use the warranty -
hopefully that option is available to you. I have heard of cases where
leaving the batteries out for an extended period of time helped resolve
problems, but is likely a long shot.

Good luck and hope you are Q'd up again soon!

Next, the form clears and you get an error message about an invalid

Assholes.

It's trivial and it's exactly what I'd do. I also dislike forms that
split the CC number into four separate inputs, then when you type your
fourth digit it automatically shifts focus to the next field. All very
good until you make a mistake and need to backspace.

Well as long as we're complaining...

Another *very* common mistake is making the user select their state
from a long drop-down list instead of just typing in the two-letter
abbreviation. Jakob Nielsen pointed out this was bad web design over
TWELVE YEARS AGO and still only a few get it right.
http://www.nngroup.com/articles/drop-down-menus-use-sparingly/

Also http://www.nngroup.com/articles/does-user-annoyance-matter/

Most forms appear to auto-fill when you type the first letter. They're
alphabetized by the full state name rather than abbreviation, so you
have to hit 'N' seven times to get to "NC".
