Re: Camera purchase advise

2014-05-21 Thread Bob Sullivan
Dan,
I've never seen/experienced any moire with the K-5IIs.
I've never seen or used a K-5II.
The K-3 is a tad sharper and better at autofocus, but only a tad.
K-5IIs is not my backup camera to the K-3, but I don't hesitate to reach for it.
...Remember, you can't take it with you.
Regards, Bob S.

Thanks, Christine!

Alyssa, the stylist, wants to shoot again and I'll suggest changing up
the lighting next time. Also going to allow more time overall. Hair
and makeup left us with less than two hours to shoot so we couldn't
try all the ideas we had.

GESO -- "Eastwick"

2014-05-21 Thread P.J. Alling
The "Witches of Eastwick" was set in a fictionalized version of the
Village of Wickford. Before getting to Newport I spent about an hour
there and came away with a few photos. For a while after the book and
subsequent "Obligatory God Awful"(tm) movie was released Wickford was
over run with New Age and Witch related retailers. That tide seems to be
receding reviling the New England Kitsch hiding underneath.

So here's a mini GESO (very mini).

Sea Monster orders lunch. At least I assume it's supposed to be a sea
monster.

Received mine (image wrap) today, shipped on 19th from Eindhoven. Two days
are typical delivery time from the Netherlands to Italy.
Really great work, as expected. Excellent photos and excellent management of
that good stuff. I like the design of this edition and rank it among the
very best ever.
I also like each edition has its own flavour, while keeping the size and
format of the book over the years. Very well done and thanks everybody!

Lens purchase advice

2014-05-21 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
OK, if I do acquire a "new to me" K-5II or IIs, I should get a good
fixed focal length lens to go with it. Currently, I use the 18-135
zoom, the 100mm f2.8 macro and the DA 50mm f1.8 with my K-r.

I was looking at the 21mm f3.2 DA AL Limited, the 35mm f2.8 macro
limited and the 40mm f2.8 DA limited. Which have people here found
the most useful and versatile? Which (if any) do you prefer for image
quality?

I am concerned that the 40 might be too close to the 50 I use now. Is
it significantly better in image quality?

I have the 100 macro; will the 35 macro allow me to do things I can't
with the 100? I know the 35 limited is a lot more modern, but I
really have no complaints about the 100 macro, aside from the shaky
hand behind the lens.

Any thoughts and recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

FWIW Google Chrome on my Mac loaded your link just peachy. I don't know what

She could have some sorta malware interfering with the https connection (Not

Re: Lens purchase advice

2014-05-21 Thread P.J. Alling
When I travel light, I like to carry the 43mm limited. I've can't
imagin using the 40mm instead, but it is quite a bit more expensive
these days. On aps-c shorter focal lengths and I guess that 40 and 50mm
lenses qualify. On 35mm film there seems to be almost no difference,
unless you take the photo from exactly the same spot and do a side by
side comparison, but on aps-c sensors those lenses have a very different
"feel" to them.

I really can't talk too much about Macro, the only Macro lens I have is
the Vivitar S1 90-180mm not a lens to use in tight working spaces.

The 21mm is a kind of funny lens, it's not wide enough for my tastes,
(~e-32), or general general purpose enough, like say a 24mm (~e35mm).
Which is strange, when I was a starving student I carried a MX and for a
wide I used a Vivitar 28mm f2.8, not the best lens in creation, but it
did the job, then later acquired a Pentax [K] 30mm f2.8 which I used
until I bought a K 24mm f2.8 and a M 35mm f2.0 which I used on both MX
and LX cameras, after which the 30mm languished, thought it was a lovely
lens that made nice sharp photos I just didn't find myself using the
focal length much. I use it (e-30mm)a lot more now, but the 20-35mm is
the shortest rectilinear focal lenght lens I currently own.

The 35mm

Re: of Google, dropbox and PEsos

2014-05-21 Thread P.J. Alling
That's just the way dropbox works, it's designed for secure file
sharing, and photo sharing was just an after thought. But it works well
and lets me use any display method for my photos, or their own built in
gallery software if I so desire. I like having control and it's
effectively free, more so than Google which really want's to sell my
info so other companies can sell me stuff. Dropbox is just selling
cloud back services by giving away small chunks for limited purposes. I
like their model and if I needed that kind of protection I'd certainly
pay for their service.

FWIW Google Chrome on my Mac loaded your link just peachy. I don't know what

She could have some sorta malware interfering with the https connection (Not

Something I learned recently (or maybe RE-learned) - You have to turn

Re: of Google, dropbox and PEsos

2014-05-21 Thread John

There should be some way to tell Google Chrome to "shut-up, I know what
I'm doing" with regards to dropbox.

Google has been getting on my nerves a lot lately. It's becoming way to
intrusive and interfering with me doing what I want to do.

I've quit using Google as my search engine because instead of showing me
what I'm looking for, Google shows what Google wants to sell me. They've
screwed up YouTube and I'm still trying to figure out how to remove
everything from Google+ so that I will only have a blank page there.

Try to reload this page in a few minutes or after switching to a new

If you were to visit dl.dropboxusercontent.com right now, you might

Since I don't use WI_FI at all, this is puzzling.

2014-05-21 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Did I get your attention?
Here is the story - I seem to be unable to buy the book for myself -
One of youse guys write me immediately to proclaim that the book was in
the mail just after I said I was about to get the ebook. He's a close
friend and I knew the present wouldn't break him so I was happy to

read that I'd was getting it. The fancy one, to boot! sheesh, I don't
deserve it but happy..

TWO arrived today (and look great!) TWO??? yup, after checking that
my friend had not accidentally clicked on buy twice it appears that
I have a secret admirer who knows how to get on my good side. To
whomever that anonymous benefactor is, I'd love it if I could say thank
you directly and will keep your secret if you write me off list.

So here is what I propose to do (which I discussed with "both generous
friend number 1" and Mark today) offer the book to the list, first come
first serve.. and send ALL of the money paid (except what it would cost
me to ship the book) to Mark to put into the Global Health initiative
fund.

The book I have two if is the fancy one, the image warp hardbound
with the extra nice paper -

The BLURB price right now is $72.71 - since there is always a coupon
around for 15% off I'll sell it for $62 and will ask $5.00 for priority
mail or $3.00 for media mail in the USA.

FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE - maybe send reply to me off list AND to list.

I hope whoever sent me the second book thinks this is a nifty idea too.

Hopefully next year I'll be able to buy my own without a bit of worry.

ann, wallowing in warm and cuddly feelings :-)

Re: Lens purchase advice

2014-05-21 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Ken. Of course, I want both.

If I am going to the sculpture garden, or the balloon festival, or the
bike races, or the ball park, I will take my larger bag and several
lenses. When I go into the city for a play, I usually take just my
50/1.8, to keep the bulk and weight to a minimum and to not attract
too much attention from people in the street. For flowers or
butterflies, usually I take just the 100/2.8 macro. For just walking
around, sometimes just the camera and the 18-135 Zoom. For whales or
birds, the camera and my 70-300 zoom.

I guess what I am looking for now is a lens that would replace the
50/1.8 for street photography, giving me a wider angle of view, and
also to put in the bigger bag, to have more choices when I go out
fully equipped.

i have not used the 21 or the 40; my sequence of ownership of primes i've
really liked (all Pentax with one exception): A 50/1.7, Sigma EX 105/2.8 macro,
FA 28/2.8, DA 15/4, DA 35/2.8 macro …

i find the 35 to be more versatile, both in field of view and in convenience
(small size, built-in hood), than my Sigma 105; for true macro, the downside is
that you have to get quite close to things, but for not-quite-macro i often
prefer its field of view, especially for plants; my garden is my muse so by end
of summer i will have a more seasoned verdict on the 35; i suspect a 24-28mm
macro with other qualities similar to the 35 might appeal to me even more

i still use the 105 macro (and plan to eventually trade it for a Pentax WR
100mm) for serious macro work, but i don't carry it around nearly as much as the 35

after exhausting other used sources i bought the 35 macro from KEH in "EX"
condition, which wound up meaning there was the slightest amount of wear on the
lens cap

GESO: Wanaka Sunrise

2014-05-21 Thread David Mann
When I was in Wanaka in January I was needing to get up quite early each
morning to prepare myself for the early start on race day. After getting up I
would usually wander around the lakeside watching the sunrise while my wife
"slept in" until a more reasonable time. I'd carry the camera with me and took
quite a few photos... it's taken me this long to finally get around to
presenting a few (a baker's dozen, to be precise).

After the race I decided to keep getting up early - I've always been a bit of a
late riser and it had been annoying me. My wife took advantage of my early
starts to get a cup of tea delivered to her in bed every morning, which
continues to this day :)

Cheers,
Dave

Stunning shots, Dave, and what a location. Very clear & sharp right up to

When I was in Wanaka in January I was needing to get up quite early each
morning to prepare myself for the early start on race day. After getting up
I would usually wander around the lakeside watching the sunrise while my
wife "slept in" until a more reasonable time. I'd carry the camera with me
and took quite a few photos... it's taken me this long to finally get around
to presenting a few (a baker's dozen, to be precise).

Re: GESO: Wanaka Sunrise

2014-05-21 Thread David Mann
Thanks Alan and Bob. It's an amazing location and I was wanting to move there
until I remembered how cold it gets during winter. It gets very busy during
ski season - summer is their quiet time. That's good because it means the
accommodation becomes affordable.

I did manage to see one sunset but it may be a while before I whittle those
photos down.

Couldn't care less about the rugby btw :D

Dave

You can't possibly be a Kiwi, then. Surely.

Nice set of images - that looks to be a stunning place to spend some
time during the off season.

3, 4, 6 and 9 are my picks.

OT - Twitter

2014-05-21 Thread Steve Cottrell
Mark writing about his videos of travelling to GFM made me think (as it
always does!) that there may be some on the list who do Twitter. I tend
to use it on a professional basis with a bit of humour thrown in
(keeping my FB stuff just general junk) and regularly post pics and
updates of work environments along with retweets from colleagues in
filming and news. If anyone's interested, by all means have a follow -
never dull in my job!

Nice shot PJ.

And not just any boat. That's an '8' (8 metre racing yacht) and an old
one - built in wood.
