Re: External Hard Drives

2014-10-27 Thread Rob Studdert
I've had plenty of problems with RAID 5 arrays, RAID 0 not so much but
that's an expensive way to go.

On 27 October 2014 15:24, Bipin Gupta bip...@gmail.com wrote:
All Hard Drives will ultimately fail. To prevent valuable loss of your

 a) You buy an enclosure i) with WiFi connectivity which allows you to

with the old fashioned manual USB 3.0 connectivity - not very
 convenient as you need wires.
 b) You buy one pair of exactly the same hard drive - some enclosures
allow you two pairs of hard drives increasing your storage capacity.
So a pair of 4 TB hard drives will give you 4 TB storage space - NOT 8
TB - as the Raid array duplicates data on to the other drive - a
 safety insurance.
 c) Now if a Hard Drive crashes, you have your photos safe sound on
the other drive. You pull out the defective hard drive and replace it
with a similar make and model hard drive - please check this piece of
information as my technology may be old. The raid array copies the
files automatically on to the new drive and you carry on as usual.
 d) Hot Swappable means you can pull out both the Hard Drives and
insert another pair with the system powered up. Great convenience and
 management of your photos.
 Thanks for reading.

Re: PESO: Autumn Leaf

2014-10-27 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Steve.

That shot has some special meaning to me. The wood is the stump of a
Cedar tree that was lost in Superstorm Sandy; the leaf is from the
Kwansan Cherry we planted this year to replace the 40 year old cherry
tree we lost in the last harsh winter.I had admired the wood before,
and tried to get a good image of it, with no great success. This
weekend, I was trying to get an image of the colorful leaves on the
new tree, which is just in front of the stump. It was breezy, making
it difficult to capture the leaves still on the tree. I saw this one
fall, and went over to pick it up. I liked the color, but was
bothered by the little notch along one edge. I place it on the stump,
to get it out of the wind, and suddenly the two seemed to go together
well, and the notch seemed to add a bit of additional interest, rather
than being a defect, as I had first concluded. Since the leaf was not
flat and the sun was at a low angle, there was a long shadow. I
played around with the placement of the leaf for a few minutes, and
took several images, with different angle of the leaf and the shadow.
Last night, I decided this was my favorite, and decided to post it.

burlesque performer, so makeup specifically for that intent would be
 next; colour, blush, and such.

Also, simply converting to BW solves a lot of retouching issues.
Especially so if you employ a red filter in the conversion. One of the
most important reasons to retouch skin is to remove blotchy skin tones
and hide reddish blemishes. Doing a red filtered black and white
conversion removes all those issues for you free. I'm convinced many
portrait photographers swear by black and white for that reason alone.

I wonder how much of this impression is due to the character of the light
and how much to the character of the film.

Are you sure it is related more to the vagaries of scanning this
particular film?

(Still a very nice image, by the way).

Another 6x7 film shot from the past couple of weeks. This is one Kodak Ektar
100, something I use with a little trepidation since it can be a challenge
to scan and get the colors right. Out of the scanner needed more adjustment
than other films, but it was not unmanageable.

 Comments welcome.

 Subject: PESO: Blue Geranium

Earlier this month, my wife and I attended the 2014 Far Hills Race
Meeting, and I have posted a few images from that event. Perhaps more
 will come.

On the way home from the races, we took the back roads to avoid all
the drunks leaving the tailgate parties. We passed the Leonard J.
Buck Garden, part of a former estate now owned and operated by the
Somerset County Park Commission. My wife noted it had been quite a
while since our last visit, so this past Saturday, we drove up to
 visit the Garden.

It is not as spectacular as in the spring, especially when the azaleas
and rhododendrons are in full bloom. Never-the-less, it is always a
pleasant site for a peaceful walk in the serenity of nature.

There were a few colorful plants in bloom, including this unusual blue
 geranium:

It is a portrait that breaks the rules, but does so successfully (IMHO).
The tip of the nose is EXACTLY at the edge of the profile (a
portraiture no-no) and perhaps even more disturbingly, the iris is
partially hidden by the nose (and other one by shadow) but I think in
spite of (or perhaps BECAUSE of its flaws) it has some serious
emotional punch.

The most dramatic image I've seen from Frank in a while. Well done!

Re: External Hard Drives

2014-10-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Eric,

As I wrote in response to the original message/thread from Mark C.,
I see great responses about Synology products.
It looks like some of them have a built-in Wi-fi capabilities
e.g. this one:
https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/DS213air

And others - can use Wi-Fi dongles from a large list:
https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/faq/427

I am not sure what you mean by swappable. It could mean at least two
different things: hot-swappable, or those where you can remove HDDs
without disassembling the enclosure.
You can check Synology Products page for all their products to see which
one fits your needs (and your tab).

HTH,

Igor

Do you know of any enclosures or drives-preferably with swappable
drives-with wifi connectivity? WD has the My Cloud, whose drives are not
swappable, and the My Book Duo, which has swappable drives but lacks wifi

The few foreground elements really convey where you are and the type

 Rob,
That's a wonderful pano of a great place.
We still relish the tour you gave us and the harbor.
The iconic Opera House roof gives it a marvelous sense of place.
Beautiful image with marvelous details when you zoom in.

To really see this I needed to enlarge it quite a bit and pan from left to
right myself then I could see the details.
It's beautifully done, but I prefer just looking at everything to the left
of th lacklustre sky, the colors, reflections in the water and the
silhouette of the famous structure with the sails that I can't remember
the name of I could look at a long time. Cruise ships are instruments of
 the devil. :-)

Fabulous! That really has it all - excellent exposure and composition
of a landmark location. For all that is in that image, I find the lights
reflecting in the water to be totally captivating.

 Hi Team,

I've been shooting events back to back over the past few months and
have had very little time spare to engage in any other photography and
I'm really missing shooting landscapes. So this morning (after
shooting an event last night) got up at an ungodly hour to see if I
could capture a nice little morning pano. This is one of 10, I haven't
stitched any others as yet but I'm pretty happy with the way this one
came out given the fairly lackluster sky.

 Tech: 15 images, 185MP stitched. K3 ISO100 1/10s MUP, Sigma Art
18-35/1.8 at 18mm f2.2, Panosarus Head on Manfrotto 044/308RC and
 wireless shutter release.
