Of course, Ephesus, along with much of modern Turkey, including Istanbul,
was indeed very Greek 2,000 years ago. It a Roman colony during its

That's exactly why I had reservations about _cropping_ in my followup
response to Ken's message. I am not that keen on extremely elongated
images, unless the subject warrants that (such as a panorama).

The scene was backlit, and I had trouble seeing and focusing, so I
didn't compose it well.

Before you've written this, I actually had thought the exposure was
handled very well (and I still think that way).

Thanks for looking, Igor, and for your helpful comments. I must, however,
point out that Ephesus in in Turkey, not Greece.

Oops! That shows my ignorance.
I was in a rush, and didn't look up what and where that is.
"Ephesus" sounded Greek to me (literally, literally!)
So, having seen a bunch of your photos from Greece recently, I just
assumed that it was from Greece.

Although, now, having googled it, I confirmed that it _WAS_ a Greek city!
So, the corrected statement should be:

... you've left Greece already, and so has Ephesus. :-)

it so that the arch would move up (leaving less empty space at the top).
I am not sure, it is likely that that would bring some portion of the

Re: PESO: Arch

2016-09-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Igor.

I can crop out some of the top, although that will mean either cropping the
sides as well, which I do not want to do, or leaving the image a lot wider
than it is high (which is not necessarily bad). The scene was backlit, and
I had trouble seeing and focusing, so I didn't compose it well. (Also, my
wife was already moving on and grumbling that I was spending too much time
at that arch.) The image had a bluish tint, so I ignored it on my first
go-around of my images from Ephesus. I was looking for something the other
day, and ran across it again, and like the detain in the arch (and the
Missing Piece), so I played with it and finally got something I like. I
will play a bit more with the placement of the arch in the frame, to see
what I can do.

Thanks for looking, Igor, and for your helpful comments. I must, however,
point out that Ephesus in in Turkey, not Greece.

Re: Pentax K-3

2016-09-08 Thread P.J. Alling
The K-3II also has the Pixel shift technology that Ricoh is putting into
all the new Pentax cameras. I don't think that that technology is
available in the K-3 even with a firmware upgrade. Whether that's a
hardware limitation or just a corporate decision to keep give the two
models greater differentiation, is left for the users to speculate.

Where I work we have a carbon-neutral policy, and are required to collect a
large pink balloon first thing in the morning, attach it to our arses, and
inflate it with fart gasses throughout the day.

At home-time it's collected by someone from facilities management, and the
contents are used to power the building the following day.

Except after a curry evening, and for vegetarians, it's proved next to
impossible to generate enough wind by fart-power alone, so many people just
fill them with the guff that comes out during management meetings.

Occasionally one escapes and bounces Rover-like through the West End of London,
causing all sorts of nervousness.

I spent some time going back and forth with the overall brightness. I

I increased the brightness the highlights faded too much. So I opted

In the cube farm where I work, some people went through a phase of
sitting on a large inflatable ball rather than a chair. One person,
having given up on the idea, wedged their translucent white ball
between the top of their cube and the ceiling, so it hovered
menacingly over the walkway. I was always a bit unnerved walking past.

Been to Portmeirion with the Mrs many years ago - really interesting place.

Couldn't stand the TV series - I can suspend disbelief with the best of
them but having a giant fucking beachball bouncing up and down the beach
was a step too far for me and reeked of cheapskate SFX. Much rather not
see anything at all than (effectively) the rubber-suit syndrome.

Always wanted a Mini Moke though ;-)
