Thanks Bob. Yes, it is a lot of fun. I usually spend most of my time
there dancing at Mr. Fezziwig's Christmas party, but there are a lot of
shows, merchants selling a wide variety of wares, and some surprisingly
good food for such a venue, not to mention street theater all over the
place. In addition to the shows I photographed we also had a nice tea at
Cuthbert's and saw a show called Naughty French Postcards that Bruce
would have loved. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed at NFP, but
it's quite well done. There are a couple of actors on the stage doing
some generally humorous dialogue in front of a scrim. Every couple of
minutes the lights will go down in front of the scrim and come up behind
the scrim showing a scene with several actors posed, often evoking
various classical paintings.

Assuming you meant PDML age rather than total chronological age…

I found PDML in the spring of ’97 or ’98. ’97 I think. I was getting
reengaged with photography, I was starting to expand my lens selection and
wanted a 135mm. I was totally baffled when trying to discern the relative
merits of the 4 used 135's then on the used market and I came seeking
advice. At the time it was easy to find as it was a link from the Pentax USA
homepage…

However, I don’t believe I am the most senior.

As the rest of the world reckons such things, I am 72 years old and 74
inches tall. Gradually getting old and shorter.

RE: And an annual happy birthday to everyone

2016-12-19 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I found the list, yet hosted and supported by Pentax while either while
choosing my first AF SLR (which also happened to be my first K-mount SLR),

or shortly after buying one in 1997.

(After choosing between Nikon N50, N70, and N90, and not liking the
ergonomics of N50 (and not being able to afford N90), I bought Pentax
ZX-5n, unseen, untried (unlike those Nikons), - purely based on the
description. And I loved its ergonomics.)

So, it makes me about 19.

Regarding the age outside of PDML, - when I joined the list, I was
probably the youngest one. Since that there were just a few people who
were slightly younger, but at this point, I suspect, maybe Boris is
slightly younger (or slightly older?) then me... I forgot... (or maybe
I've never known that.)

of photos from Dickens Fair yesterday. The closeup photos of the singers
were shot with Nicole's DA 55-300:

The wide shots were mostly shot with my DA 15-30/2.8 and my walkaround

The singers are a group called Brass Farthing, and the morris dancers

Assuming you meant PDML age rather than total chronological age…

I found PDML in the spring of ’97 or ’98. ’97 I think. I was getting reengaged
with photography, I was starting to expand my lens selection and wanted a
135mm. I was totally baffled when trying to discern the relative merits of the
4 used 135's then on the used market and I came seeking advice. At the time it
was easy to find as it was a link from the Pentax USA homepage…

However, I don’t believe I am the most senior.

As the rest of the world reckons such things, I am 72 years old and 74 inches
tall. Gradually getting old and shorter.

Never had that problem. Camera diopter doesn't have enough magnification
(or whatever it does) to handle my uncorrected eyesight.

I've been wearing glasses since I was 12. No chance for contacts, my
blink reflex is so bad I could never put them in. I've been wearing
bifocals since my early 50s & went to progressives right away because I
couldn't handle stairs with the kind that have the line in the middle.

NOT a candidate for laser surgery. Doctor says I have too much
astigmatism. But they told me that if I ever have to have cataract
surgery, they might be able to fit me with a lens that corrects my
distant vision & then I'll only need reading glasses for close up work.

Hoodman offered a pair of "Photoframes" that flipped the glass part up
out of the way while your eye was against the viewfinder, but it doesn't
look like they make/sell them any longer.

http://petapixel.com/2010/02/24/pma2010glasses-for-photographers/

It's a shame. I looked at them one time, but they were VERY expensive
($500 frames) & you still had to pay your eye doctor to make the lenses
to fit them. Plus, when I asked about getting cable temples, I was told
they were not available.

Searching for them now, the old reviews show them with cable temples.
What a bummer.

I do a hell of a lot of networking, John. :) Sometimes it's traveling

Thanks, Larry, and everyone else who wished me happy birthday.

At this age, one does not feel much like celebrating a birthday. It feels
too much like a ticking time bomb.

On my birthday, I took my wife to see Andrea Bocelli in the Prudential
Center in Newark. It is the home of the New Jersey Devils NHL team, and
hosts many big concert events and college basketball as well. The concert
was quite nice, but the traffic jam getting out of the parking lot was
quite trying.

Just so you folks know, I don't do Farce Book. I have had two incidents
where adverse parties in legal proceedings tried to use postings there in
an unpleasant manner, so I stay away.

RE: My next piece of photographic gear

2016-12-19 Thread John Coyle
Hi Larry - join the club! At my age, it's inevitable that I need more help (I
started wearing
glasses for myopia at age 12!). I now have two pairs, progressives for
walk-about use, and a single
focal length pair giving me a range of about 70-200cm (funny that), which I use
for computer work.
I can read books and papers without glasses at all, after my lens started to
harden, changing the
unassisted focussing range.
Closer work and tiny print is another matter altogether...
