Re: OT Covid-19

2020-03-14 Thread ann sanfedele
P.S. have to say this - most of the items I have lots  of (the almond
milk, paper towels and Tp) are things I bought about three weeks ago..
on line from either Target or Amazon. In order to get free shipping you
need to spend $35.  In order for me to afford paper towels and TP, I
need to buy more than one or two things at once.  Until the store closed
where I could get Tp for 75 cents a roll and bounty cheap too I wouldn't
have been pressed to buy more.

Dont be too hard on people who buy a lot of TP though.. unless they are
young and healthy. There are some in the age group I'm in that have serious
intestinal problems where not having enough TP is a serious issue.   The
bottled water gathering in excess thing though, that is nuts.

72 ounces of powdered coffee mate
almost 10 lbs of coffee (caf and decaf)
about 1 quart of hand sanitizer

Re: GESO: Maui Waterfalls

2020-03-14 Thread Ken Waller
Depending on the number of exposures taken you get images closer to the slow
shutter effect than the higher speed images. With fewer exposures there is
still detail in the water with less of the silky smooth water effect obtained
with the slow shutter process.
Try it, you might like it. I personally like it as it becomes less of a
documentary image and a little more artful but still recognizably as what your
eye actually sees.

Dan,

I really like the effect of the faster shutter speeds, especially in the fourth
one.

I also like the set overall! The people add scale rather than being a
distraction.

A polarizer might have helped tame the glare from the foliage, especially in
the later ones.

Rental cars are not supposed to take the back road from Hana, but they do.
If you break down on that stretch of road you may have to pay an exorbitant
fee to get someone to rescue you.

You say you have "tried" to get that in-between look; how did it work out?

Re: OT Covid-19

2020-03-14 Thread John

On 3/14/2020 09:46:01, mike wilson wrote:

Don't know what's happening in the rest of the world but UK supermarkets have
recently instigated buying quotas:

Waitrose
1 lobster, 6 quail's eggs and 100g of Pate de Foie Gras

Aldi
1 MIG welder, 1 pink sports bra, 2 trumpets and 1 wetsuit.

I already have a MIG welder. What I need to get is a new bottle of inert gas.

Costco was out of toilet paper when I was in there on 03 March. I wasn't "panic
buying" like some people. I usually buy their 30 roll pack and it lasts me 4 or
5 months.

Last time I bought toilet paper was back in October, so I was about due.
Fortunately I was able find a similar 30 roll pack at Wegmans, so I should be
set until late summer.

I'm really liking Wegmans, except they don't carry one or two items I used to
get at Kroger ... they don't have the BIG jars of Peter Pan Peanut Butter or the
single serving size of Micheal Angelo's frozen Eggplant Parmiagiana or the
six-packs of Chobani Greek Yogurt with Mango on the bottom.

I did get big boxes of Ritz crackers, Belvita Breakfast Biscuits, ham, turkey,
cheese & coffee at Costco. And Wegmans did have a really good deal on a two-pack
of their house brand Peanut Butter in the BIG jars (and it's almost as good as
Peter Pan).

I'm only a little concerned. I've got good supplies of basic foods. I was
already stocking up after installing the new cabinets in the kitchen, so I kind
of anticipated what was going to happen without really realizing it.

But I am 70 years old, Type II diabetic & have high blood pressure. Both
conditions are well controlled by medication ... not much I can do about my age,
other than try to keep accumulating it one day at a time.

I'm also a 10 year cancer survivor. Don't know if there are any other tick-boxes
I haven't hit.

I do have plenty of hand soap and an almost unused bottle of 91% isopropyl
alcohol I can mix with an Aloe Vera gel (for sunburn) that I already have to
make my own hand sanitizer if I need to.

I've made arrangements for someone to take care of my dog if I get sick. My
biggest problem right now is I have Costochondritis (chest wall pain) flared up
from straining to move those stoves around last week.

Oddly enough, in my local Waitrose early this afternoon there was very little
fresh produce, no canned goods like beans and tomatoes, no muesli or porridge,
even the expensive brands, no pasta, no rice (which is what I went in for), no
toilet paper, no antibacterial wipes (for my hearing aids) even though a virus
is not a bacterium..., no household cleaning products. And no people. They must
have all been in for an early morning raid.

My local Co-op on the other hand was overflowing with bounteous wonder (and it
wasn't labelled 'Waitrose'...

I managed to buy some toilet paper in Waitrose earlier in the week. There were
three packs left, at the back of the top shelf where only the tall could see
and reach them. I bought one 4-pack, but couldn't fit it in my saddlebag with
my work clothes and other stuff, so had to carry it on my back in a musette. Oh
the shame! of being thought a hoarder... but in fact practically everyone I saw
on my way home was carrying enormous quantities of toilet paper.

For the benefit of the unBritish, Waitrose is posh and middle class, Co-op is

I just use brown basmati rice now... cook it in excess water as if it

Our press says it doesn't take much for toilet paper to be bought out.
It's bulky and doesn't generate much profit for the storage and shelf
area it occupies. So, the stores never stock more than strictly
necessary in the normal run of things.

But they assure us that there's still plenty where it comes from.

Hand sanitizer hasn't been seen for weeks anywhere. The cheap food house
brands (pasta, wheat flour etc.) have gone but there's plenty of the
branded products. We suspect they're just making people buy the more
expensive stuff.

Everything except pharmacies and food will be closed on weekends until

Here in Germany, no special closures in retail or pubs and restaurants.
Less people outside and less traffic.

All I needed was some milk, fresh veggies for a couple of days, and a

I don't understand why people bought things that could go bad if they
lost power, and toilet paper, how long do they expect to be without

from my viewpoint, I didn't have the time to hike in to get a better
shot; as it is, the "Road to Hana," around the east end of Maui, is an
all-day trip, with limited time for stops and excursions. I spent some
extra time getting to Lindburgh's grave to leave a miniature Distinguished
Flying Cross medal, which is about all the two of us have in common.

Hmmm. When I approach a photograph at the taking stage, sometimes I see 'the
story' right away, sometimes I see the story about to happen, but sometimes I
don't see the story at all.

Taking the last category first (as I do tend to do things ass-backwards) not
seeing 'the story' (or call it what you like) is not a bad thing. Sometimes I
*think* I see something, and other times I think that maybe there is something
there that I can't 'see' now, but might 'see' later. In any event, when later
looking through the images, I'll know right away by seeing them on the screen
in front of me. More in a moment about my selection process.

Here's an example of a shot that I simply grabbed as I was walking and had no
idea if it would work or not. Only when I saw it later, I realised I liked it
and there was a story there:

When 'sometimes I see the story about to happen' is when the elements of a
would-be photo are taking shape, and about to happen, but haven't happened yet.
A classic example would be that you've found a wonderful scenario in front of
you but it just needs a little something 'extra' to make it work better. Say,
you find some graffiti on a wall next to a walkway, so it might be better to
wait for an added element (say, someone walking past) before you push the
shutter button. But it might not. Pressing the sutter at the right time is 'the
decisive moment'. Here's my humble offering:

And seeing the story right away is the obvious one. You can see it happening in
front of you, sometimes looking through the lens, sometimes not. Mostly not.
What I would define as a 'good photographer' is being aware of what is going on
around you, being aware of what is likely to happen, and being aware of what
your own preferences are. The story you want to tell. Don't forget that a
photograph isn't just a representation of what is going on in front of you and
your camera, but a representation of your interpretation of the story that is
going on in front of you and your camera. How you tell that story is how you
select the lens, how you select the shutter speed and aperture, how you
position yourself with the light - or indeed if you bring your own light. It's
your blank canvas to tell that story, to convey that scene, to photographically
describe what you see and later present it as part of your art.

And finally, just a word on selection. If you take a LOT of pictures (I'm
naming no names here!!) it can be daunting to look through endless thumbnails
in search of that keeper. We all do it slightly differently. All I can tell you
is how I do it.

When I pop the memory card into my computer, I drag across the folder with the
images in onto my desktop, and eject the card. Then I open the folder with the
images and open the images in a basic frontline photo viewer, in my case, on a
Mac and with 'Preview'. I then go through each image, one by one, and right
away, if I don't see 'the story' then it's 'cmd' + 'del' instantly. Yes, I
delete them into the trash there and then. Each pic, as I look at it, right
away, if it doesn't hit me right away with a 'this pic definitely has something
to it' or a 'hmm this pic might have something to it, maybe look again at it
later', if none of those 2 criteria are met, it's trashed. This is because I
feel comfortable looking at something and getting a gut reaction.

That thins out the crowd by probably 50 percent or so.

Later, I will look again at the rest, and from those I will reverse the trend
and pic out those I like, those that stand out of the crowd and sing to me. But
I won't delete the rest, they'll get saved in an archive. Who knows, I might
change my idea of style, or look again at how I interpret a scene, or at the
very least give me something to do in those years to come when I am less mobile
and more likely to sit on my butt all day!

I hope this gives you some insight into another way. There is no right and
wrong way, there's only your way :-)

But please, do keep posting images - that's what this group is all about.

cheers

Very nice, refreshing scenes, Dan. The one is quite high compared to the
others. In the Western Cape there are falls something like that - very
popular for the "sport" of Kloofing. Kloof is the Afrikaans word for a
ravine so the "sport" is basically jumping from the top of the fall into
the pool below. No doubt they do something equally as reckless over there?

As I mentioned in my last note on this topic, Wednesday, March 11, 2020, was
build day for the new bicycle. My buddy Jake (manager at the local bike shop,
Summit Bicycles), built the new machine—coming in on his day off to do the job
for me! Here he is presenting me with the finished build for the first time:

   https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49650740317_682ec6b668_h.jpg

He did a superb job on the build. We spent a little time fussing with seat
height, bar and control adjustments, etc. Then I walked home and dropped off
the camera and the other junk I didn't need, I changed, then walked back and
picked the bike up. I couldn't go straight home … I rode the bike up to
Cupertino and visited my friends at another bike shop there, Trail Head
Cyclery. They're the folks who built my custom wheels, and will build the
wheels for this bike again. From there a nice ride back home and I stopped for
a first day beauty shot of the bike parked outside the condo.

   https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49649927433_daa3350eed_h.jpg

It's a beautiful machine and amazing to ride! Weight is around 28lbs with these
wheels; the new wheels will drop that a pound or two. I'm fussing over some
details on it today … fitted my saddle bag, the Garmin bicycle computer and
sensors, etc. I'm waiting for the postman to drop off the different handlebars
I bought for it (these were my first try and they're a little too high, I need
flat bars).

I'm happy. :-)

I have it on very credible word that my beautiful bicycle was sold and resold

The good news is that my insurance company acted quickly, positively, and
settled the claim I made for the theft within 48 hours. I've just deposited the
settlement check today. IN the week and a half since the theft and the notice
of the claim settlement, I've acquired a new frame (Salsa Beargrease frame set)
and all the parts to build a new bike have been received by my friends at the
local dealership. The new bike will be built tomorrow. :)

I'd meant to send a thank you to everyone who offered their condolences and
support on this and other forums, but honestly haven't been in my right mind
until just yesterday-today. I've been documenting the process on FaceBook, for
those who follow me there. My apologies; thank you all for your kindness and
notes of support. I really appreciate it.

This was a terrible time, it ripped my guts out. I'd rather not discuss it
further, need to put it all into the past.
Thanks!

The reason I started paying attention to photography was Larry’s landscape

Below are the two photos I am currently happiest with. While the photographers
were creating landscape photos that would be pleasing for me to look I was
photographing them, trying to capture their faces lit by sunshine and smiles.
