EEEKKK

I'm logging on now to pull off all my pictures - I doubt any of them
are worth stealing, but I would be insanely angered to see a photo of
mine being used without credit to my name at the very least.

perhaps this is retarded, but I have an old ME-F that I've been saving
for parts because the battery cover is missing, and I bought it for
the lens anyways. If it would fit, I'll happily mail it to you for
shipping costs. If not, perhaps you can give these guys a call?

I'm in Germany, so I can call them for free if you like.

silly how we forget all the nice functions of our cameras...I still
don't know half of what mine can do, I just treat it like a manual

I love it - she is seriously cute. Looks like a real handful - and I
like the pattern of the floor behind her, neutral, but not boring. I
also enjoyed your statement: 'this is MY daughter on OUR floor'. I'm
sure her mother is pleased you're willing to share the floors, if not
your daughter...although, don't all the girls belong to daddy anyways?

2009-05-20 Thread Rebekah
Thanks everyone for all your well-wishes, advice, complements, and
interesting comments. I hope to run out and start photographing soon,
the entire base is surrounded by lovely woods - like your photo Rick,
which is lovely - and I can see a castle tower from my backyard. We
have already enjoyed our first beer fest - they set it up right on the
base within walking (ok, stumbling) distance from our home.

I hope everyone enjoys GFM this year - I'm coming next year,
regardless of the time change

Also, if anyone finds themselves nearby, let me know, I crave some
time with someone who understands why I own more than one camera and
lens :)

Re: Oh so OT - Car rental in Italy

2009-05-08 Thread Rebekah
Rick,

I don't have the answer to your question, but I would suggest that you
study for and take the test to get your actual European license or
permit. Since you state that you've already rented in Germany, France
and the UK, I'm sure you've noticed all the differences yourself, I
just moved to Germany, and I was surprised by all the rules that
differed here in Europe.
and whatever you do plan on doing, I highly recommend at least a
passing glance through a study guide or some such thing. I was
surprised by all the signs that they use around here, not all of them
are obvious. I hope you enjoy your trip!!!

Re: Colour temp of LED stage lighting ... ?

2009-02-17 Thread Rebekah
Bruce,

hopefully I can add something helpful to this discussion. I'm not
very knowledgable about photography, but originally my college
degree's focus was stage lighting for live productions. I remember
when LED stage lighting was starting to become popular - such a
wonderful idea: cooler, birghter, cheaper lights...

Anyways, the LED lamps I'm familiar with are usually 5600K color
temperature, although there are also 'warm white' lamps that are
2800K. I don't suggest shooting on your tungsten setting. Cotty has
an excellent point suggesting to shoot in RAW because the lighting
temperature will often change from minute to minute as different
lights, colors, and brightness settings are used. A lighting
instrument will produce a huge range of color temperatures just as it
is dimmed or brightned, and then of course there's filters to
consider: the colored plastic put up in front of lights to change the
color. I do recommend proactively asking to walk on the stage and get
a couple of readings before the show. Call the venue location, or
show up an hour early, and ask to speak to whomever is in charge of
lighting. Chances are, they'll let you meter to your heart's desire
if you ask nicely. Make sure they understand you won't be flashing if
there's a no camera policy. Lighting folks also love to be bribed
with photographs of their own work, so perhaps you can promise them a
CD of your work for their portfolio. Ask if they can show you a
couple of different lighting settings that they use most frequently
that will give you a good range of what to expect.

Good luck!

Re: PESO: Even more Mushrooms

2008-10-05 Thread Rebekah
I like the picture itself, I love the colors and composition. The
texture really makes me want to keep looking at each detail and the
focus is well done and allows me to do so without squiting.

What may be bugging you, I think, is perhaps your lighting (from above
it looks like) gives the whole picture a very 2 dimensional feel (yes,
I know it's a 2 dimensional image). There's only one easily
identifiable shadow, and it's on the mushroom. It reminds me of a
picture that got flashed too much and everything is evenly lit with no
shadows.

Is this a picture you can revist?

Re: AF why

2008-10-04 Thread Rebekah
I'm not going to claim any special knowledge, but my *istD has the
same button and I was recently given my first AF lenspressing on
the button allows me to autofocus without having my finger near the
shutter button. My husband finds it useful, since his thumb rests
there, but it's a bit of a stretch for me. I don't know, but it seems
useful to be able to focus without fearing taking a picture, and also
allows you to have a good firm grip on the front of your camera with
all fingers. Also, keeping your finger on it gets continuous autfocus
going.

Again, I just switched over to digital, and only recently got my first
AF lensso, I don't know. :)

Re: buying digital camera on-line

2008-09-08 Thread Rebekah
I haven't purchased a camera online, but I remember looking at prices
- a while back, for the K10D, and seeing some sites that seemed way to
good to be true - sometimes two hundred dollars cheaper than the going
rate. Site with names like cheapcameras.com or some similar
nonsensea few minutes looking at user reviews online, as Mr.
Alling suggested, showed hundreds of complaints and reeked of scam.
Realistically, I think that prices on Ebay, especially for new items,
are a good measure of what something is going to cost you - while not
always the answer, it's a great guideline. Stick to the brand sites
suggested here and please be cautious!

OT: Moving!

2008-08-30 Thread Rebekah
Hello all,

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I am moving to Germany - my
husband has been stationed there by the Army for the next three years.
We haven't been assigned to a specific base there yet - I'll find out
on the 4th next month, but supposedly all the bases there are nice.
Has anyone lived on or nearby an Army base in Germany? Does anyone on
the list live in Germany? What's it like? I confess I know virtually
nothing about Germany. Does Pentax have a good number of customers
there, or is it unheard of? Anyone got any good suggestions for me to
go shooting? I'm excited by the idea of living in such a centralized
location in Europe.

Also, my husband and I are expecting our third child, to be born mid-April :-D

rg2

P.S. I've just stupidly discovered that my last month's worth of
comments to the list have not been sent as they were not in plain text
formatting. But, I have been here and I have enjoyed the PESOs :)

Gallery Rejects

2008-06-20 Thread Rebekah
I remember seeing a thread a while back inviting people to share
photos that had not been accepted into the Pentax Gallery. I was
hoping to start up another one - if anyone is willing to share, maybe
we can share our rejects. :) Also, with your permission, I'd like to
throw up all the photos on a Picasa (or similar free photo site) for a
permanent "rejected Pentax gallery photos". Just some thinking.
Anyways, I'd love to see any rejected photos, I have several that I'll
share here, some of which I'm quite proud of and not really bothered
by my rejection.

http://picasaweb.google.com/rg2pdml/Rejected?authkey=D2mjrpyoBi0

Additionally, if anyone would take the time to critically help me on
my rejects, or anyone else who chooses to share, I'd love that. I'm
sure there's zillions of 'rejected' photos that are very good, and
maybe some also that can use the vast experience here to improve.

Re: More Macro Musings

2008-06-08 Thread Rebekah
wow, that's hilarious, I just spent the better part of an afternoon
attempting to shoot a spider too. The first one my husband screamed
at and told me to take outside. While I was trying to photograph him,
he ran into a corner and fortunately scared out a much more willing
model. I used a piece of white paper and sunlight (cheating, I'm
sure) so the second fellow wasn't running from my flash, but a giant
black lens approaching its face probably didn't help its calmness
level. Every couple of seconds I had to stick out a hand to herd the
spider back onto the paper

Where's your pics?

PESO: Broom Grass

2008-05-21 Thread Rebekah
So, I returned to Magnolia Gardens at the beginning of the month, but
it seems I arrived between flowering seasons, so little was in bloom.
I spent most of the time playing around with some macro filters.
Anyways, I did catch a picture of some grass that I ended up liking a
good bit.

Taken with a Pentax *ist D
135mm 1:3.5 and +2 macro filter

I really like this picture - your range in values is great, and you
caught that steam against a dark background and it looks so lovely and

Re: Peso Front yard tulip shot

2008-05-15 Thread Rebekah
David, I love the placement of the flower in focus in this picture. I
don't know why - my eyes wandered, lit on the flower, and fell in
love. This would be a fun picture to play with with a focal B&W, or
perhaps just desaturate the rest of the pic? I don't know. It just
looks like it would be fun to play around with. Anyways, I love it.

I gave my husband an Optio Z10. I love the way the lens doesn't
protrude to take pictures, the quality of the pictures is really
great, and the thing stands up to my husband (which is a feat) and has
already been dropped several times (eek) to no noticable damage. I'd
gush on, but let me just say it's a great little camera and we're
loving it.

Re: Should I care about film?

2008-05-06 Thread Rebekah
>Do I want to go to that expense again for equipment that is already
>aging and for which there may never be new parts again?

scrolling past all the other opinions,

If it makes you happy, sure. Pentax cameras last a good long while,
and the K lenses work on the digitals anyways. Plus, film is
enjoyable to process, and personally I adore the way slide film looks
although it may be a very long time until computer screens and
scanners compare and also catch up to my checkbook.

Additionally, I have an old me-f that has no cover on the battery
compartment, so I just shoot manually. I enjoy the challenge and hope
it keeps me good at metering by eye.

I guess it's just a personal thing. In my mind, it's like asking,
'should I care about watercolors?' or, 'should I care about
hand-drafting?'. Well, personally I can draft on the computer and use
paint programs quite handily, but I enjoy drafting out a plan by hand
or spending a few hours painting. And yes, it's nice to load pictures
from my camera straight to my computer. So is film dead? Only if you
don't want to use it.

Enable me!

2008-05-06 Thread Rebekah
I've been told by my husband to buy myself a new lens :-D

So

I'm looking to buy a longer lens, maybe in the 300-350 range.
Sharper is more important that speed to me - most if not all of my
pictures are outside, and I live in the south US. It's sunny and
bright here. So, long and sharp- and hopefully under $200, but I may
be dreaming - what do you guys suggest?

Thanks to all who take the time to answer :)

yeah, anhinga - it's a bird that looks a lot like a cormorant, but
they're not actually very closely related, they're just similarly
adapted to the same environment:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anhinga

not a fabulous photo, but:

http://picasaweb.google.com/rg2pdml/Anhinga/photo?authkey=iyvJ1c76ZL8#5197226982159689810

the anhinga is on the left, sadly, no UFO ;)

Idiot's Guide to GFM

2008-04-28 Thread Rebekah
Well guys,

this year will be my first year at GFM. (yeah!)

So, if anyone would kindly take the time

What do I bring? What do I leave behind? When should I arrive?
Where do I go to find you guys? Should I bring food? What kind of
food? How much camping gear do I need? What are you packing in your
camera bag and what do you suggest? should I bring a laptop?

Basically, can anyone tell a first-timer how GFM goes, what to bring,
and what to expect, and where to go?

ThanksI'm so excited!!

Ebay problem

2008-04-27 Thread Rebekah
Hey all,

I just thought I'd warn you of a potential problem seller on Ebay. I
bought something for my camera from the seller, and it was packaged
poorly, and became damaged by the packaging during shipment. When I
contacted the seller, they became rude, defenesive, and kept switching
up their story. We're duking it out through Paypal. Anyways, this
person is selling a few Pentax-fitting lenses and other such stuff,
and if anyone would like to know the name of the seller, I'd ask that
you contact me privately at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Otherwise, sorry to take up space in your inbox ;)

great picture, I love the expression you caught, I have to say I wish
the plane of focus were tighter to minimize the background
distraction, but maybe that's a personal preference. It certainly
still works :)
