Re: OT: Almost ready to by a scanner
Shel, The two top brands for home users in my opinion are the Minolta Dimage series and the Nikons. I've owned both. They both have nice twain interfaces, and both have option that includes interface cards. You want something faster than USB 1.0, becuase a hi-res scan can produce 30+ megabyte files and that takes time to travel over your wire! I switched from Minolta to Nikon because I wanted medium format support and went to the LS-8000. I think Minoltas are a bit more affordable currently. Lastly, make sure your scanner you are considering is supported by the ScanVue software from Hamrick. Its probably the best scanner software out there, so you always want to have that as an option! Since you are mainly talking about older BW film, don't get too impressed by Digital ICE and those addons, many aren't compatible with true BW emulsions! At 01:45 AM 3/18/2004 -0800, you wrote: I'm working on a long term project to scan years worth of BW negatives and also plan to use the scanner for E6 transparencies, and, to a lesser extent, color neg. I also intend to make larger than 8x10 prints and feel that the largest pixel count is important. I'm very close to deciding on a Nikon 4000ppi model (I can never recall the model number sigh). Why did those of you who bought one, decide it was the way to go? And for those who bought something else, why that, or why not the Nikon? My choice of the Nikon is based on it being the only scanner I've used and that's affordable at this time, and that I've heard some questionable comments about other scanners. shel

I'm sure it worked the first time I tried the new firmware. Works fine without the flash, whether plugged in to the puter or not. Anyway, tested a few things - resetting all camera settings, eventually decided it was a bug with the new firmware. S, I dug up my old 1.10 firmware, and installed that. Re: Digital Imaging, File Formats, and Color
For your project, you need a color test chart, or anything that can be used as a true baseline, and have that in a picture at the begining of every session or roll. Then have one of those charts available for anyone wanting to produce an image in the future and they'll make your red the red they was there! In theory. Uncompressed TIF, but zip up your files possibly - external compression. At 01:05 PM 3/17/2004 -0500, you wrote: Back to the list after a few years of absence. I apologize if I've already missed a similar discussion. I've recently been interested in digitizing my photographic process. I'm sticking with E-6, but every slide I make I get scanned. The web-site www.josephholmes.com gave me a bit of inspiration in to what digital imaging can mean to the photographic process: overcoming, or at least managing, the limitations and variations that are introduced when we try to represent the natural world in print form or on the web. This self imposed term paper I've been doing on the web has led to more questions than answers. I came back here to get a consensus I have relied upon in the past. Here are my questions: 1) Which file format, in what type of compression, in what color space (or photometric interpretation) is the best for archiving and printing (not web use)? My feeling so far is that GIF is out b/c it is limited to 256 colors; JPEG (which is actually a compression not a format) is out because the compression is lossy; TIFF seems to be the winner. Are there there viable options to consider. Should the TIFFs be compressed in a particular way, or uncompressed? Which way? Should the file be in RGB, CMKY, XYZ, L*a*b*, or other. I know RGB is good for monitors, CMYK is good for printers, and L*a*b* has its advantages too, but what should be the bread and butter? 2) Could someone explain the Color Management process. Does this process change the information in a file, or does it merely alter it during the data process to change it for a specific use. Ex- if I have a color profile for my scanner, does it alter the raw data coming in, or provide a means of interpreting that data? Similarly, if I changed a color profile for an image in photoshop one day, and then changed it back to the original later, would the result be different from the original? And lastly, is color management based on a standard palette that all profiles look to as a baseline, or does the process happen in the absence of a standard? how? Thanks for the help and the dicussion. I'm glad to be back. Brent Roberts Florence, SC (formerly of Birmingham, AL)

Re: displaying digital photos
For around $1000 USD, you can get a LCD Projector, like they use in business presentations, and project your digital images on the wall. I've already sold my MZ10, and if I didn't need to sell my Z1 and various redundant lenses, flashes, etc to finance my move into digital I would keep them. I might keep the Olympus XA for the moment. While I am very impressed with digital and believe it's the way of the future I am saddened that I cannot display my digital photos the way I can when I project my slides. It's all very well to have high resolution digital images but it's just not the same viewing them on a monitor or TV.
Anyone got a Working Spotmatic F for sale
Some of you may remember I was looking for contributions for a photo club I was starting for high school students that I am sponsoring where I teach. I have 3 Spots, regular, a II and an F. I loaned out the regular and the II and couldn't find my F. I found my F, and first time I cocked it,the shutter is tuck I guess. It won't fire and it won't wind. So that one less I could loan out, but even more, I wanted to always have a working F just for me! Anyone have an F they'd like to sell to a happy home? Also, we'll still take any screw or K mount bodies anyone is willing to donate (if they mostly work!) The kids dug up a broke ME and a Sears KSX-P, but as mentioned, broke, but does provide a lens for a working Kmount!
M42 Equipment for Students
I am starting a photography group/club at the high school where I teach this semester. Was wondering if anyone has m42 equipment they don't want to go through the Ebay hassle with but want it to find a good home. Doesn't have to be our beloved brand, maybe you got a Petri or Yashica or Chinon in the back of some drawer. Bodies or lenses. Would love for each student to have a camera they can carry around. I'm excited because that is how and when I fell into Pentax. In 1982 during my senior year of high school, I found an old broke spotmatic body (meter doesn't work and mirror would stick) and found a dented 50/1.4 that would screw into it. I found that I COULD take pictures with it, nothing great, but I did my own BW and wet lab stuff for yearbook and it was just too much fun. I don't want to list all the equipment I gathered since then, but I have that same Spotmatic and two more I'll be loaning to some of my students, and if I could get 2 or three more systems for them - WOW! That would be great. So if you have some M42 stuff you want to go to a good homecontact me! Actually, and working camera equipment (not darkroom stuff) you want to find a home in some excited under-privileged teenagers hands...let me know and I'll tell you if I can figure out how to make good use of it!

the moon / *ist-D
Ok, was looking at my full moon shots tonight and they seemed a little fuzzy so I was going to look at them in each channel, because I notice a color fringe on top left of moon and a different color fringe on lower right, like a TV out of alignment on 1/1000 sec shots, where they shouldn't be much movement, I noticed during a switch between each channel, the moon would appear to move a little, so the combined channels were not in synch. Is this an atmospheric, light distance, quality of lens issue? I check a color flash shot, zoomed in on the eyeball and had the grid on and I saw no movement...this shift is unique to my moon pictures I had a Pentacon 500/5.6 and a Tamron 2x telecon, so 1000/f11 before multiplier (1500/f11 ?) Also noted in photoshop at 200% magnification I could see the squares from the jpeg even though I shot at ISO 200, L ***, the best jpeg mode. Next outing (tomorrow) I'll shot in RAW and TIFF and compare.

It depends on the visual cues in the image that the viewer picks up. My *ist-D came too late for me to do any bug macros, but I expect that it will produce close ups of insects as good or better than the best film. I say this in part because I've been able to get excellent closeups using a 3.3 megapixel digtal up to this point. For that kind of work, higher acutance (at the cost of resolution) works. If you think about the visual cues that define a bug, it generally is about edges. I expect the *ist-D to really rock with snowflakes this winter - because snowflakes are nothing but edges.
Anyone had this happen on *ist-D?
Initially the only batteries I put in were 4 NiMH in the battery pack and left camera empty...everything normal. Then I put another set of NiMH in Camera (so now 8 batteries). Shooting - everything normal...but come time to download, get battery depleted message. Remove either set, everything fine. Have sets, get battery dead and camera will even shut off, though neither set is dead, or even near dead!
Breezebrowser Problems
I like this breezebrowser program folks have recommended, but I ran into a problem, seems every now and then when I asked it to rotate an image, it would corrupt the EXIF data and then the JPG wouldn't load! My work flow is to copy all files from camera to a folder in HD and then work with them. I rotated a picture I wanted, and it got corrupted and nothing would read it. I did a search for something to do an UNDELETE off the memory card, since I had done a MOVE and not written anything to the card, I knew all the data was actually still there. My search (a frugal one of course) led me to this free wonderful program that everyone here should have in their arsenal: http://www.webattack.com/get/restoration.html

Later on I'm planning to also (or instead) use (part of) my garage for a studio. I will probably put up new wall paper with shooting pictures in mind. I plan to attach some holders for backgrounds to a few a the walls. Initially I will simply try it out shooting some models, using and calibrating whatever flashes I have. Will be great reflector for you and lights with colored gels infront and you can create colorings! Will I be able to find wall fitted photo background holders (is there another word for them?) ? ***Thumb tacks? Curtain rod? Normal background holders will all work. 3. How far will I be able to get using flashes only? When (photographically speaking) will I find some sort studio lights a necessity? (Don't even remember the various types of them) ***As long as something is adjustable! Whether by putting things in front (umbrellas, ect, diffusers) . A handheld light/flash meter is the critial item you need to see how lighting is hitting your subject (or a digital preview, used like a polaroid to see what you are getting) Farhter than you think, as long as you can angle and point your flash units 4. (I don't want big stuff, and I don't have much money). What would be a low budget, but still useable, (type of) studio light(ing) to start off with? The ALIEN BEE serious might be good for you then! 5. The thought of using and mastering multi-flash set ups is intriguing. However how tricky will it be to learn, and to use it in practical shooting? Is there any obvious way to go about achieving this? (Types of flashes, slaves, connectors, cables or IR remotes etc.) 1 cabled and one slave. Thats all you really need. Many will tell you a good reflector can take place of slave! Multitude of books out there! Thanks for any input on any of my questions, or on things and aspects I may have overlooked. Re: which one to choose?
Honest opinion - is YOU dont see some feature the MZ-S has that you want/need that the PZ-1p doesn't, dont blow the extra money! Not sure if data-imprinting is worth that much extra! Hello to all, I was able to save up about $500 towards purchasing a new camera body and possibly a prime lens. My two choices (even though one of them is financially out of reach right now) are the PZ-1P and the MZ-S. If you were in my situation, would you go out today and buy the PZ-1P or wait until you can get more funds (about 3 months) to buy the MZ-S? I've also been reading publications comparing the two cameras. Why did pentax build the PZ-1P with a faster maximum shutter speed than the MZ-S? Also faster flash-sync, 4-fps vs. 2-fps. What are each cameras advantages and drawbacks? Thank you to all. Hope to hear from you. Francis M. Alviar - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: pentax-discuss-digest V1 #2041
Well, you are going to be a new father, and that is when I made a major Pentax purchase myself. Actually, around the 1 year mark. What happens is that the baby will move faster than you can manual focus! So you need autofocus! Yeah, you can get a zx-5n and some lens, or a cheaper model and more lenses! If you look around get pentax dedicated flash that support TTL. The 28-105 AF pentax lens will do ya good! And it comes in silver to match so well with the zx-5n At 01:47 PM 1/30/2002 -0500, you wrote: Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 17:36:16 +0100 From: Jarbo Petter [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Buying new gear, Help!!! The digital VS film discussion
Few things to keep in mind. I would assume that 90% of the digital camera owners are computer owners. While the % of homes in the USA with computers is around 50%, its definatley not that high in most other countries. I guess we'll have to see what the Chinese consumer desires over the next few years, as they'll be the major market force before long. Maybe technology will brng to market the film that is 10x faster and the process printing takes 15 minutes including a CDROM of your pics. Maybe you'll drop your film off at KODAK/FUJI kiosk and all the pics will be in your e-mailbox by the time you get home! Its is true in the business world, companies aren't using slide projects any more! Powerpoint and a computer projector have 99% of the market! But how many of us have a $1500-6000 projector at home to view our digital pictures any larger than our monitor? That could be the next product for consumer, the digital projectors in the under $1000 range. They do double duty, as they'll be hooked up to your home entertainment system, and replace TVs. They are actually square. I guess I am confused becuase normal is top to bottom (or bottom to top) and 90 degrees to that sound left to right to me. Re: photographing LEGO (and one more cat picture)
All but the cat-on-balcony shot were shot on a tripod, and I have at least a couple different exposures of each. I'm not happy with the way the red bricks photographed in any of them. The only detail I'm getting is the contrast of shadows, and the occaisional lucky just-at- the-right-angle reflection. I suspect I'll have the same problem with the white when I pay more attention to it. LEGO is just too darn reflective, and there is great contrast in the few, basic colors. I'd really like to get the natural-light shots to work well because I'm going to be photographing this church from the inside, with the roof on. I'll have sunlight coming from the wall behind the altar. I can bounce photolamps through the side windows, but I only have a few feet clearance on either side of the church. It's on a 5 1/2' x 7' table in my living room. I'd really like the wall with the organ to photograph well (it faces the windows behind the altar) because it's the highlight of the church and is the most interesting LEGO construction in it, but I can't get that textured wall to show detail. It's also difficult to tell the organ is made of round pieces, and not just a mosaic on the wall. You probably are going to need to get some white sheets and make reflectors and defiantely don't use any light coming from teh direction fo the camera directly, hit it at an angle Also, on interior shots, figure out what is obsrtuctive walls (where you can see what is behind them, and put some refelctive material in there (since it wont show) and let that bounces some light for you. You might even want to get a small flash with a slave eye, some tissue or other difusser on it and have it firing inside the setup! You defiantely need a hand light meter, and maybe even using a polarizer will help cut some of the refelctiveness of the red down! Sounds like quite a fun challenge. If using sunlight, you may have to get some mirrors/foil nearby to bounce some light in directions its not going! - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. If the PUG had been around when the prior classics like the Spotmatic or K-1000 had been declared discontinued, then we probably would have done the same thing. I think its great whenever there is an opportunity to contribute, like when we did the extra gallery last year for family member. Re: manual/autofocus lens teleconverter question
If you were to say get the Tamron autofocus 2x 7 element, it would work fine. The autofocus ones pass the connections through to the lens, so if you later got a 28-70 2.8f Autofocus or a FA 50/1.4, they would autofocus with this telecon. Re: Thoughts on the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 please?
I just got on yesterday! This is a nice, but BIG lens. Has a wonder tripod bracket, which may get in your way for mostly manual focus use. I haven't shot anything yet, but it looks nice. It feels very solid, and comes with nice hood and fancy carry case. If you don't have autofocus body yet, wait until you do, prices may drop or maybe Pentax will have ANtiVibration stuff by then! $799 at BH if I remember right? Not having had any Sigma gear before, I wonder if anyone would like to comment generally on their performance, or maybe on the lens in question if possible. It would be used for a while on MXs, but (hopefully) within a year or so, on a new Pentax digital camera. I use manual focus rather a lot (!), and will most likely continue to do so as old habits die hard (although I'm certainly not averse to newfangled methods). Accordingly, what can you tell me about the manual focus facility, if anything? Re: Scam or Sham?
Its both. They put your picture in the book so that you'll buy it! Yep, not an impressive thing, but if you want to be in a book... They'll give out the prize to someone, they are required to do that 750 images * 69.95 is about $52,000 If the prizes are cash prizes, or if they are from advertisers in the book, they could still make some money themselves! At 11:23 AM 4/13/01 -0600, you wrote: I received a letter in the mail yesterday from picture.com. Apparently (I don't remember) I entered a photo in an on-line photo contest. OK after returning to the site, I remember. The letter came in an envelope with a window, through which I could see a thumbnail of my photo, Takhlakh Venus. So it got my attention. http://pug.komkon.org/99oct/TakhlakhVenus.htm The form letter is pleased to announce that the photo was selected as a semi-finalist in the nature category of the International Open Amateur Photography Contest, there is an excellent chance of winning "over 114 cash or gift prizes - including the $1000 Grand Prize - you may even win the $10,000 Annual Grand Prize!". You should have seen my 10-year old's face light up when he said "You're going to win $10,000?". He's trying to save $35.00 and figures it will take him about 5 more weeks. :-) They wish to publish the photo in a book entitled "Frozen Highlights" which is a classic coffee-table quality book, hardbound, with 750 "timeless images in full color." The book is only $69.95 if I wish to purchase one at the pre-publication price, $59.95 each if I purchase 2, plus $8.00 shipping each. I need to reply, giving them permission to publish the photo, and am under no obligation to purchase the book. Copyright remains mine. Here's what bothers me about this: 1) If my photo was to be in the book, I naturally think I deserve a free copy, don't you? I haven't been paid anything for the photo and there's no guarantee that I will. After the two prizes listed above, the next level is $35.00... $25.00 and so on. 2) The book is 8 x 11, and from the looks of it there is 6 images per page. So the size of my picture that was "selected... because of its unique perspective and artistic vision" will end up being 2 - 3 inches. Big whee! 3) How "professional" of an approach can this be? They are publishing my picture in a coffee-table book and are using a low-quality .jpg file as the image source? That bothers me more than anything else. You would think they would at least ask for a dup of the slide. The idea of winning a large cash prize intrigues me. The idea of having my photo published in such a way, possibly alongside other photos of questionable quality, turns me off big time, and, I think would degrade my work, not elevate it. Homemade replacement for electric cable release
I have a cable release and didn't want to pay $30+ dollars for another, so during a slow time at my desk at the office, I tried something I though i had remembered reading. I found a extra cable that come with mnay CDrom or sound cards that has the 4 connector/3 wire for moving sound from CDrom to computer/sound card. I adjusted one end so all three wire were next to each other, instead of have a space btween one of them. Then I used a pair of cutter and cut off the extra hole, to make it a 3 hole/3 wire on that end. I then got an exacto knife (since I didn't have a file handy) and shaved the appropriate corner and the thing fit in my SF1x like a charm. I then popped the wire out of the other ends to see what would happen. Top/Bottom - focus/meter (equal to 1/2 shutter button depress) Top/Middle - fired the shutter (even if not in focus) I need to visit RadioShack and make a switch no for the other end. Does anyone know the trip to fire the shutter only when in focus. Is it a 3 combined setup? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Sears lens
The is one well known Sears lens, a 135mm that had a true macro feature, otherwise they are all just average 3rd party lenses. Re: Become a PUG commentator... please! :)
Nice thought, but those places require policing because you get 'arses'. Say some Nikon loving anti Pentaxian finds the pug. He leaves foul language on every page, what a pain to go clean that up. And if someone was to embed HTML, we could have adverts or obscene pics included...we don't want that! At 12:11 PM 3/7/01 EST, you wrote: Is there any way that those in charge of the PUG can set it up so that comments can be added directly to the page where the description and info on the picture is given? Similar to the way things work on Photo.net. This could be a great benefit. Thoughts? brent - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Spotmatic Weekend Woes
My guess, probably cheaper to replace then repair! At 09:28 AM 3/5/01 -0500, you wrote: I spent this weekend in taking pictures of my children and flowers. Everything was going wonderfully when I fired the shutter on my spotmatic and I quickly noticed the mirror had locked up. Now I have had problems in the past with the mirror locking up at very slow shutter speeds but it always came unstuck after I fired it off again. Well this time it locked up at 1/500 and will not come undone. I guess it's time for a CLA along with the repair any idea on how much I can count on spending? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Back to Pentaxia with questions....
I own a PZ-1p and a ZX-5n. I like the feel of shooting the PZ-1p, once I got the grip strap for it. The ZX-5n, I rarely ever shoot it without the battery adapter, again because I like the grip. If there is not a significant feature the PZ-1 has that you'll be taking advantage of on a regualr basis, I'd go with the NEW ZX-5n for the WARRANTY! And if you have the option to get the extended warranty out ot a total of five years, go for it! What is your source quoting you for a PZ-1p body, not close enough if you really want a PZ? At 10:45 AM 3/5/01 -0500, you wrote: So what then is the body of a PZ1 made of? (It sure looks like plastic to me in its pictures, no?) Also, the MZ/ZX bodies are not a light "plastic", but some kind of heavy polycarbonate fusion material. Having owned older metal cameras, (such as the tank-like 1970's Canon TX,) I believe an MZ/ZX would survive knocks, or even a fall, with much more safety! IMO where metal severly jolts the insides of a camera upon impact, the polycarbonate stuff would absorb better the vibrations of this very same impact! (I do not think one should assume that older and heavier metal bodies are always better. It really depends upon the individual camera, and how well it's put together...) And as for durability, well, a ZX5n sure as hell ain't gonna' wear out in my lifetime. (My kids can buy their own damn cameras. Probably will too. Digital...) And a PZ1 has a lot more little buttons and intricate features to it; which means more stuff to have possible trouble with later on, yes? The "bigger and heavier" part of the PZ1 interests me though; it might be easier to hold onto and maneuver than a ZX? Skip I am very concern about the quality rather than quantity. When I bought the Z-1p, I compared the MZ-5n as well. IMHO, the built quality of MZ-5n is no match to the Z-1p. Not to mention that all MZ/ZX bodies were made of plastic (even the mounts are metal). I reckon the Z-1 share the same chassis so I would prefer the Z-1. However, it is significantly bigger than the MZ-5n. regards, Alan Chan - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
