Looking into picking up either an Optio 230 or 330 for a gift for someone
this year, and was wondering if anyone'shad 4x6s printed from them and how
 they look? 5x7s?

I use my 330GS for up to 10x8 for wall mounting / framing, so not for close
inspection, and it's great - lens isn't brilliant though and a bit distorted
at full wide angle but colours and resolution are fine!

 2) How do you deal with dust, and how do you store and protect your

I buy foam lined hard cases for all my gear (photo, video and audio) and cut
them to match the gear. Store them in there, label the outside and you know
where everything is.

They travel well (especially flying), are pretty dust proof due to the seal
made by the foam and you can tell if somethings missing by the gap in the
foam. Which reminds me I must cut a hole in the camera case for the

Optio 330GS, slave flash, messing around

2002-11-12 Thread Tim S Kemp
Just messing around tonight with my 330GS and a cheap pocket slave flash,
discovered that the trick to using it is to activate red-eye mode then pull
the slave out of pocket after the first flash (assistant required if trying
this on a distant subject). Had some reasonable results, shows the
insufficiency of the built in unit.

This is my fave shot though - MZ50 is on the kitchen countertop, Optio set
to -2.0 comp, slave flash is dropped inside a red plastic drinks cup to the
right of the MZ50.

I kept well away from any further water spray for the rest of the visit.
I am now considering my options for shooting with a digi near water in
the future. I think a flexible spray-proof housing is a very good idea.
If I were a sports photog (which I am not) shooting salt-water sailing or
power boating, I would consider a full water-proof housing mandatory for
a digi, or shoot with film (ah, the LX, sniff).

Indeed. For me a digital body will be an additional - you know what would be
cool though - if Pentax launched an APS SLR at the same time so we could all
carry a cheap film body (taking APS film) with the same focal lengths as the
digital...

But then I'd end up spending loads of money and carrying four Pentaxes
(35mm, digital PS, digital SLR, APS), and that'd be scary.

Re: Exclusive picture of new Pentax D-SLR

2002-10-28 Thread Tim S Kemp

I agree. Unless Pentax makes a really dumb choice, you're gonna need a big
battery pack. I don't think the smaller sensor
makes that much of a difference.

There is little reason why a DSLR would be worse for battery consumption
than a digital PS, and there's no winding mechanism so there's more space
in the body - I would suggest that a 4xAA system would be the best - use
2xCR-V3 for long disposable use, NiMH for everyday and if you're caught
short with no power buy some duracells...

Re: Digital! I got digital! Long but worth actually reading!

2002-10-13 Thread Tim S Kemp

Couldn't think what to snip, so I cut the lot.

Any internet discussion group is full of enthusiasts about the topic, I like
driving, all the guys on the driving groups are amazingly into driving, and
yes, sometimes they have wish lists too!

I have an MZ50, it's my first Pentax, my last decent 35mm was a Minolta AL
rangefinder that I learned to take pictures with. For me a camera is about
the pictures, capturing the moment, not about features, bells and whistles.
I need a lens, shutter and media that I can carry anywhere, so I have a
flightcased MZ50, 100-300 sigma, 28mm 2.8 pentax and 35-80 pentax, flash,
batteries, film, cleaning stuff and a lightweight, cheap and nasty tripod,
in the boot of my car. It's small, light and very flexible.

I also have a Yashica Microtec zoom 70 PS, some of my favourite (if not
best technically) shots have been taken with that camera over the last 8
years. I now want my PS to be digital (as I've not printed a film for about
a year now, my photography is as digital as it can be!) as it's the camera I
use most and it's a pain having to scan and store all those negs. A 3.3MP
digital PS will replace it, and will be more than adequate.

I don't want a Canon or Nikon DSLR. I want Pentax to make me one, my lenses
are only cheap ones but I would rather use film than throw them away and buy
new ones. Current DSLRs are bulky, Pentax have always made compact and
lightweight cameras, when, not if, they make a DSLR it will be a typical
pentax I'm sure, I'm also sure it'll be full frame, and good value. If they
can't make a compact full frame DSLR at a good price now then they will wait
until they can, and I will wait with them for a couple of years at least.

Technology is a strange business, the high end gets higher and the low end
gets cheaper, my 1.7 GHz PC bought this year cost less than the 233MHz one I
bought five years ago, electronics get smaller and cheaper with popularity,
I have few friends now who do not have some form of digital camera (my video
camera for example is digital). I am convinced that in the next two years
the high end digital SLR will be 20MP or more in a standard sized Nikon /
Canon body, and the entry level SLR will be a 6-10MP in a similar sized body
to our current MZ pentax / Dynax minolta with the bare essentials. Remember
how much flash memory used to be? Remember how long camcorder batteries
didn't last? Two years is a long time in technology, until then I'll keep
developing and scanning.

As for talking about it, if we didn't talk about, and pentax staff read this
list, they might think Well if the enthusiasts aren't interested we won't
bother

I still await my optio 330GS...

It is interesting that neither Nikon or Canon produced new lens mounts
for Digital. But Canon did produce a new lens mount when they went to
 Auto-Focus.
This in spite of drawbacks inherent in using a smaller than full frame
35mm
 sensor
with 35mm lenses. (Just food for thought).

I think they always saw the small sensor thing as a stop gap, and probably
an advantage to the press photographers who want ease of transmission (snap,
plug in, upload) and tend to use longer lenses (so with a small sensor a
28-100 and a100-300 would be enough for 90% of work) with work ending up in
newsprint so resolution less of an issue!

Notice how they are now pushing full size sensors! If I made money taking
photos I'd be buying the new Kodak..

Re: Cameron's Pentax Comments

2002-10-13 Thread Tim S Kemp

If, and this is a big if, Pentax chooses to market a DSLR (and I
don't think they will), it will be based on the MZ-5 chassis,
and will not have pro specifications.

Observation here. Pentax have built the 230, 330 and 430 optio on the same
operating system and display, so the electronics obviously handle different
sensors, and also designed around CF cards, not SD, MMC or other smaller,
easier to interface units. Only technical reason for CF is the higher
acheivable data rate and storage capacity, smartmedia is cheaper to produce
and memory stick and SD are smaller. All these cameras (230, 330, 430, 330RS
430RS, 330GS) are built as small as possible. And the 330GS is about the
cheapest 3.3 megapixel there is.

Could it just possibly be that they have decided that they will hit the
market when the full frame sensor price allows them to make a basic MZ50
class low end camera with 5-6MP (notice no 5 MP PS from them this year?)
and an MZ-S class camera with a 10+MP sensor? CMOS sensors are cheaper to
make, and Canon have just launched one Also any DSLR user would want to
be able to use CF cards, microdrives

So I declare myself as hero of the day for choosing
a Pentax digicam instad of one of its competitors:-) Maybe there's
really something like loyality, at least in situations like these where
an objective decision between nearly identical products from different
 manufacturers is impossible.

I hope that the Optio will arrive tomorrow or on Saturday...

Where did you order it from? I ordered one from Pixmania last week but they
told me they've been recalled and will be re-released later in the month due
to a problem with the USB interface - I hope they do, I'll be buying one
before Christmas to replace the Yashica PS that gets family use, and it'll
either be an Optio 330GS (cheap option) or the Canon S30 (dear option) if
the 330GS never appears - S30 has lots of manual options but is 100 euro
dearer

Of course, I ordered a 128 meg CF card and a CF reader (so the USB problem
wouldn't have affected me anyway) and they are here. Nice card - shame
there's no camera to go with it...

Re: Digital! I got digital!

I'm quite sure that the GS appears soon. It has a good price and might
be a real cash cow for Pentax in the christmas business. I don't remeber
 the S30 prices, but wouldn't a 330RS or even a 430RS an alternative?
 They provide many manual functions.

Only downside of the 330RS is that for similar money to the S30, you only
get two aperture settings and it doesn't support microdrive. Also the Canon
has RAW mode as well as Jpeg. The 330GS appeals with its price point...

So true. Has anyone seen shots from the full frame Contax? With lens
compatibility being the pentax USP it's going to have to be a full frame or
nothing!

I would suggest though that wedding and portrait guys are not yet dumping
film. Not the ones I've seen anyway. I think 35mm is going away in favour of
digital though and all that holds it back is a sub £500 digital body with a

Something is wrong with your minivans. I've had two Ford Windstars and

18-19 mpg now... was 17mpg with the old one.

Cruising at 79-85mph we got 200 miles between 20 gallon fills - there were
some high speed bits, I wasn't driving

And there is nowhere in the USA where you can cruise at 110mph in a
sportscar
let alone a van. Furthermore, the tires will not stand up to the
punishment.
About as fast as we cruise is 75mph or 120 Kph.

I believe one state has no posted maximum limit? And the deserted
interstates at night are similar to the european motorways (trans europe I
regularly hit cruise at 130-150 mph). Cars in the US I agree are built for
lower speeds, especially with those hard cross-ply tyres... The other thing
to remember is that long distance travel in the US is easy by air, for the
UK / EU we don't have brilliant or low cost air links.

The difference in your fuel prices is all tax. It keeps your countrymen
in
the cities and on public transportation rather than roaming about the
 countryside. g

Re: SUV's - was: Illegal Street Photography?

2001-12-04 Thread Tim S Kemp

Having driven there last year, with a full size van (15-17 mpg) at about
90-100 mph, I was blown by by a couple of sports cars like I was
standing
still. Can't vouch for the speed at which they were traveling, but on a
dry,
sunny summer day, I'd guess they were in the 120+ range.

I would love to get my Rover (140mph) or my colleagues Audi (154mph) over
there

Re: SUV's - was: Illegal Street Photography?

2001-12-03 Thread Tim S Kemp

I'm sat in a hotel in Atlanta at the moment (I live in the UK, go home
tomorrow...) having driven down from NYC via Atlantic City in a minivan.
The first minivan was a Dodge Grand Caravan (in the UK sold as the Chrysler
Grand Voyager) - averaged about 13 mpg. The second leg in a Ford Windstar,
averaged about 11 mpg. My UK minivan (Vauxhall Zafira) does 35 mpg and
still seats seven and cruises at 110mph.

This makes sense in the US where fuel (gas...) is USD0.95 per gallon (about
22 cents / litre, or in UK terms about 15p/litre) but in the UK fuel is
around 75p/litre (do the math, thats USD 4.50 a gallon, 81 bucks to fill an
18 gallon tank) so even our large cars (I drive a V6 rover) do 28 mpg or
much more average. Diesel cars are popular (to bring this on topic I'm gonna
post a picture of my car when I get home) and SUV (or the UK equivalents -
we call them off-roaders) are rarely petrol drivne, always diesel.

While the US pays so little for its fuel, people will drive what they like.
That's the culture. The average engine size in the UK is 1.6 litre, maybe
smaller, people think my 2.0litre V6 is extravagent. I come here and a full
size sedan is 3.5 litre V6 and 19 mpg. I don't complain though

Colour films have their blue sensitive layers at the surface of the
emulsion. This is because ALL layers are sensitive to blue so to
prevent blue light from fogging the green and red sensitive layers there
is a yellow filter between the blue sensitive layer and the green and
red sensitive layers. The yellow filter is removed in processing.

Thanks - that explains a lot (found two rolls of royal rolling around in the
car) - I'll bin the other roll

looking at perhaps purchasing my 1st film scanner. i remember reading a
few
weeks/months back about the pacific image 1800u. a local shop now has
them
 in stock.

Do it, unless you can afford a better one, as the scans are so much better
than flatbed scans off prints.

since i usually don't shoot slides, for those who do shoot print film, do
u
no longer have prints made at a lab but now scan from your negatives?

Yes, I find them more than adeqate, and the day-to-day costs of running C41
films without printing are sooo low.

my needs are modest. i would be printing on an epson photo printer for my
own viewing, usually 5x7, occasionally larger, and for web posting of
images.

Perfect

do u use the software that comes w/this scanner?

Only the driver ;-)

i use macs. is that a problem w/this machine? software-wise?
(for those mac-heads, what machine are u using w/this scanner how much
ram?)

I'm a PC USer. sorry...

Heat damaged film shows an increase in base fog, so the mask
layer will be darker than normal, and generally the magenta
layer is more affected, so the base also takes on a somewhat
bluey-red colour compared to an undamaged film. Print colour
will be all over the place, depending on the skill level of the
 printer.

Re: Scanners Again

2001-10-31 Thread Tim S Kemp

 I had, and
several others do on the list, a Pacific Image Primefilm 1800u. At $199,
it
is a film scanner and will give respectable results, probably far better
than a flat-bed with a film adapter (which is an after thought).

And hugely better than a flatbed scanning frontier prints. I'm still in love
with mine (going to buy my first roll of slide film for ten years now and
just waste it to see how they scan - all my old slides are at my parents and
I'm not driving there to get them, yet)

Any ideas on a good daylight slide film? Used to use Ektachrome and Konica
(love them blues) but not used them forever - I like vibrant colours and
fine detail but don't have any fast lenses yet...

... sad to say I'm now hooked back on the photo thing again

Re: Got a cheap film scanner...

2001-10-29 Thread Tim S Kemp

I saw this one on Costco's website for $149. Does it really scan at 1800
dpi (optical)? I've had a Umax scanner for a while but it is SCSI and
it's
been a pain to connect ever since we moved into our new home. I've been
eyeing USB scanners (Epson 1250 photo, Umax 6450) and they have a maximum
of
either 1200 or 600. It seems that at 1800 I could get reasonable 8x10's.
 Any experience with that?

It seems to scan at 1800dpi 12bit/channel quite happily, moving to it from
my (home) Scanjet 3400 and (work) Canon 626 the increase in depth and detail
is astonishing. Worth the money and 8x10 is quite acceptable!

Takes a while at top quality and the user interface is a bit crappy though.

 Hi everyone,
I hope you don't mind a dumb questionbut I have
been thinking about getting a new scanner, and
actually this film scanner sounds great...especially
the price...but it does both B W and color? I
actually want it for BW, to do proofs, before I
decide which negatives are worth printingsaves a
lot of time. I don't want to invest in the high
quality printer you would need to due color prints,
and I don't want to get into color darkroom work
either! So this would work OK for B W proofs?
 Thanks! Mike Steele

I'm afraid I don't have any b/w film to try in it but the colour stuff is
good! It's 35 mm only remember...

Sometimes one can purchase film at their destination - it just depends
on the film choice and the destination. I know that Bob has been to
places where many types of film are unavailable, as have I. While I
don't unequivocally advocate shipping film, there may well be times
 when it's a good choice.

Of course when we all have our MZ-D and 645D cameras we'll stop buying
film or you can normally by Kodak Gold at the airport ;-)

Get the longest, fastest lens you can. When I shoot SCCA races I use a
60-300mm zoom which gives me a good range. My lens is crappy and slow and
I'm looking at getting something faster and better quality. F4-5.6 should
be ok if you use 200-400 film speeds

My lens also is crappy and slow, but I always use iso400 (supra / royal
