Oooh, you smooth operator. But seriously: Nice photos. I like the way the model is beatifully isolated from the out-of-focus background (Jody sighs wistfully as she remembers her f1.4 lens). I have to get into portraits. Just need to get that LX. I already have the M100:f4 macro which doesn't fit/work with any of my current cameras. People have said it's a good portrait lens. Re: Multiexposure by MX?
I have used this method quite sucessfully with my Spotmatic. The mechanics of all manual cameras are such that it could not fail to work. Re: first camera
My first camera was a $5-10 110 camera that I asked my parents for. I look back at these photos and think they look really bad, but they still have their merits. And the camera helped me appreciate the basic art of photography. Later on, I started learning photography at school. At this stage, I saved up and bought myself a Spotmatic. I don't really think you need a lot of automation to start with, just to get a feel for photography. Then as your son grows up, he can decide whether he wants photography to be a part of his life. RE: Professional
I don't know about other people, but the word professional actually puts me off cameras. No way am I a professional. I would probably describe myself as a semi-serious hobbyist who is becoming more serious by the minute. When I hear the word professional attached to a camera that maybe I was going to buy, It makes me think "S--- Jody, are you crazy? What are you doing?". It scares me to think that I am buying a "professional" camera. Shouldn't they just be for people who actually make a living from photography? For eample: When I first saw the LX, I knew I had to have one. Then I heard that dirty word "professional" attached to it. My dad even said it sounded like a "professional" camera, purely from the verbal desription I gave him. So then I started panicking, thinking I'm not ready for a "professional" camera. It took me a long time to get over that. Now I have an LX on the way (sorry to gloat again) and I have realised that "professional" is just a word, and I shouldn't let that one word put me off a camera I really want. Jody. __ Do You Yahoo!? And manual focus. I don't see how you can have an LX without that. Personally I hate autofocus in case you haven't noticed. I have taken quite a few photos using the autofocus on my MZ-30, and many more on manual focus. When I look back at the autofocus ones, they are invariably well out of focus. The autofocus does not work at all with my close-up lenses. Whereas my manual focus photos are nice and sharp - allowing for my pulse of course and not using a tripod . Jody. __ Do You Yahoo!? RE: Semi-OT: Pickpockets & oops.
Actually that reminds me of my trip to Western Australia about 5 years ago. I was tramping (hiking) on this fairly deserted walking track on the outskirts of Bunbury with my Spotmatic over my shoulder, and this guy in a car asked if I would like to go with him and take some photos. I can guess what sort of photos he meant. I said "No Thanks" and got on my bike and pedalled like mad. I saw him parked further down the road. I am just lucky he didn't try anything else. Oops, sorry about that. Think I pressed instead of and somehow the message decided to be sent. I was wondering what you guys do to protect expensive Pentax (and cringe...other brands) camera gear while travelling. I mean, here in New Zealand, you could wander around with 10 of the latest high-tech bodies around your neck, and still have 10 bodies when you got home. Or you could leave one on the ground and either 5 people would come running after you to return it, or it would still be there when you went back 2 hours later. But I realise most countries aren't like this. Do people try and cut the straps of your camera-bag? I have heard of this happening with hand-bags. And what if you just put it in a normal bag? How do you get it out to take a photo without attracting attention? Or do you just not take photos? Jody. __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I don't really like the MZ-30. It is too automated for me. I rarely use the autofocus, or auto-exposure modes. I would swap it for an LX anyday. Just can't find an LX. I used my Spotmatic happily for 10 years, until the meter broke. I went into a shop to buy an off the camera lightmeter for my baby, and spotted the brochure for the MZ-30. Eventually decided to get it, but found it doesn't meet my needs. I don't even know why I bought it, and I miss my darling, gorgeous Spotmatic. I would go back to it in a flash if I could get it fixed. I am even trying to fix it myself, as the local camera shops have told me probably it can't be fixed, and I have to pay NZ$40 freight just to find out. Re: Why I won't be buying an MZ-S, and other ramblings with a rant at the very
Bollocks. I do most of my pics hand-held and very few are fuzzy. When they are, I usually thought at the time I should be using a tripod, but didn't have it with me because it is rather ungainly. Actually a vast proportion of shots where I thought I should use a tripod came out completely non-fuzzy. Try bending a tripod down to get a flower picture, which you are shooting at 1/500th anyway. Try telling me that photo needs a tripod. 90% of the time I shoot at at least 1/125th. I have been told you can generally handhold down to 1/60th, and I have had many sucesses below this. Why I won't be buying an MZ-S either.
I fail to understand why one would pay so much more for a camera with functions that they neither want nor need, and that they won't use in a million years. The only conclusion I can come to is that it is a status symbol, like the latest Porsche or Ferrari, and it feels good to say "Look at the new MZ-S I bought". I was going to say something rude here about maybe they are compensating for the diminutive size of something else, but I won't - I'm always a nice girl ;) I can tell you for sure I will never buy an MZ-S or a Ferrari, unless all the older (and better) cameras are somehow wiped out, and buying the MZ-S is the only way to buy a non-digital camera with manual capabilities. Frankly I don't care much about status symbols, I don't own a car or a house. And I want a camera that allows me to take a photo, without confusing myself with all the bells and whistles. And, yes I can access all functions of my VCR and microwave. Taking a photo is different, though. Jody. > Yes, there are a number of optional controls. "My trip" or "Cameras big and small"
Just wanted to tell you about my "big" trip. I decided to take the scenic route over two days instead of flying in a couple of hours. Yes, there is camera stuff in there too, and even Pentax camera stuff. Day 1, Saturday 14th July 2001. Got on the bus in my home-town of Gisborne, NZ. Took 4 hour bus trip to Napier. Pretty uneventful and I hate travelling by bus. Then I hopped on the train. This track is in danger of closing due to recent politics, and privatisation of rail services. They stopped services between Gisborne and Napier. But it is a really nice journey. The train went to Wellington taking 5½ hours. Then I stayed overnight in Wellington. Amused myself by taking night photos out of the hotel window (9th floor) with ye old MZ-30. Should be interesting. I used a variety of shutter speeds. Then I had my usual attack of the clumsies and cut my toe on the step out of the shower. There was a lot of blood around. But I didn't think to take a photo. Besides I didn't want any of you males to faint at the sight. Day 2, Sunday 15th July 2001. In the morning I took some daylight photos out of the window. There were a couple of interesting old houses just outside. Then hopped on the Interislander Ferry. This takes passengers between the North Island (where I live) and the South Island (where Dave Mann gets all his bargains). This takes 3 hours, or you can pay a bit more and get the fast ferry. Now the ferry is one of the best places in the country to see any camera ever made (and hear any language/accent ever made). I saw one girl with a Pentax, looked like a Spotmatic, but she was covering the front and I was too shy to ask for a look. Then I saw this lady with a Canon. And she had a bigger lens than me-Wahhh! (?75-225). But I suppose I shouldn't be too upset, of course my lens was optically better. She should just wait until I get my Tamron 60-300 going. It was about now that I wished I had a longer lens. This was not motivated by jealousy. It was just that at this point (½ hour out of Wellington) I discovered there was a picture-postcard view of Mount Cook and the Southern Alps in the distance. Mount Cook is the highest peak in NZ. You can't usually see it from the ferry, as it is in the South Island, and usually covered by cloud I guess. The cloud was up higher today. Then I took another bus for two hours to arrive in Nelson. I had a look around town today. There are quite a few promising camera shops. I saw an SMC A28 in one. I forget the minimum aperture. It was NZ$120. Maybe US$280-300. Is this a good price? Is it a good lens? I don't have a 28 yet. Do I need one? Jody. __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Don't do it. You have far too many other things to do to waste time playing with a new camera. There is the LX Gallery to finish, and the PUG to work on. Stop being so bloody weak. RE: Overlapping frames on MZ-S
Surely if you know your camera, you can feel the gears stripping themselves out. Then you can stop what you're doing and wind the film back. I have never had a problem with not getting an extra photo anyway, on all my cameras SLR or non-SLR. And I have never stripped the gears out. I think it is not so much the length of the film as what you do with the start of it. I never wind it on more than I need to before closing the back. Just wind until you are sure it is on the cogs properly. Then (on a manual wind only) you can often sneak one photo in before your camera actually says 1. A single wind-on is usually enough to clear all the exposed film. Or you can do ½ wind before you close the back, and 1½ after closing the back. Surely this is the only way to have absolute control of shutter speed and aperture without having to conform to the numbers on the dial :) Jody. > From: "Creature's Comfort" > > A Real Photographer only uses manual equipment, > has minimal > > use for built-in light meters, shoots B&W negative > film, has > > no use for cameras that require the use of > functions or an > > encyclopedic "user's" manual, and has no need to > understand > > such acronyms as FPS, Tv, Av, Hp, LCD, and other > such > > silliness. > > > > A Real Photographer has no need for digital > anything, auto > > rewind, data imprinting, any sort of auto focus, > and doesn't > > wait around for a "flagship" camera. RE: Best ISO 400 Negatine Film
Thankyou. I love Agfa. It is the only film I use now. I use HDC Plus. Is that the new film you are thinking of? I suppose it is fairly new to New Zealand. The US has probably had 6 different versions since then. I have never really been much into Kodak. Obviously an engineer, Bill. How about just unwinding it back on itself. Although I think it is going to be impossible to describe over email. B&W ad
Just thought of this ad I saw in the local paper. It was for a Vivitar ?2000S Black and White camera. Obviously if you try to put colour film in, it either spits it out, or makes all the images black and white :) Jody. __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Happy Birthday to me.
Happy Birthday to me (Sunday 24th), but only 25mins left. I am getting way too old. So this year I decided to be 21 again. And the year after I will be 20. People won't notice. Everyone thinks I am still at school anyway. The drinking age here is 18, but I still get asked for ID every time. Meanwhile 16 year olds are walking in the door no problem. There is something wrong there. Just to make this on-topic: I see I have missed another PUG deadline. But I definitely plan to be in on the next one. Now that I have my scanner and internet connection, I will be right. Jody. __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Re: MZ-S gripes
Are they really rhetorical questions, or did you perhaps subconsciously want them answered? Sorry I am so far behind with my replies. They disabled internet access at work a couple of weeks ago, and it wasn't until yesterday that I became connected at home. So I am working through about 1,500 emails. I should just delete them, but don't want to miss anything. The good news is that now I will be able to give you all a run for your money on the PUG. Watch out!
