RE: *istD, Muvo-2 and Hitachi 4gb Microdrive

2004-03-09 Thread zoomshot

I just got my Nomad Muvo 2 and removed its Hitachi 4-gb microdrive according
to the instructions at http://www.pcconsultant.com/microdrive.htm
It required a simple size No. 0 Philips precision screwdriver to complete
the disassembly.

Then I put the drive in the *istD, formatted it from the camera menu, and
went shooting. Success. Hooray. Everything looks great. 991 pics available
on the card in ***L mode, 223 tiff, 282 RAW.

Total cost $188 from Dell, which is pretty inexpensive for 4 gb of camera
storage.

Alas, when I went to buy another yesterday, I could no longer find the Nomad
Muvo2 4gb MP3 player on the Dell web site. Rats. Now my D100 is feeling
like a second class citizen with its puny little 1 gb card.

Note: others wishing to use this drive should review the many messages at
dpreview.com storage and media forum. Since my ancient computer hiccupped
at upgrading the Muvo firmware, and I was not trying to retain the player
itself, I simply bypassed the step of upgrading its firmware, which means
any future use of the player may require extra effort to get it back to
working order. Also, there is some mention that the D100 formats only 2 gb
instead of the full 4 gb. In that case, the drive must be formatted with a
Win 98 or 2000 computer rather than in-camera. But the *istD shines with
this drive - pop in the drive, hit Format from the Menu, and go shooting
with 4 gb of storage.

--
John Mustarde
www.photolin.com

I just did the same, 10 minutes to remove and reassemble the MuVo. The *istD
and I are very happy bunnies

Now I have a spare battery, might just get another to use as a WMA player,
4GB will get around 80 albums onto this little baby from our collection,
will be great for holidays and travelling.

Regards,

Ziggy

Bob's suggestion of posting info about "lesser known"
photogs is, of course, a good one. However, not everyone knows about the
better known photogs ... someone on the Leica list had, for example, never
heard of Salgado or Nachtwey. Still, putting forth the names and perhaps
urls of any photog is a Good Thing.

A favorite of mine is Chih Hsin Yang. I saw some of his work in a Taiwanese
publication, Photographers International (a beautiful magazine, almost
booklike in its
quality) but have not been able to find any of his work on the net. He was,
it seems, unknown even in his own country. The photos published in the
magazine in June, 1999, were all about forty years old and the first time
any of the work had been published.

If anyone knows more about this photographer, please tell us.

RE: Too much mail

2004-02-24 Thread zoomshot
Yes, there is too much mail, we now have over 400 per day coming in, that
might be ok for the people that don't work and have time to download and go
through all the posts. I work and in the past week just don't have the time
to go through my email. Just a download, quick look and delete all. With
this volume coming in, if you don't download most days then mail will be
bounced and you will get unsubscribed.

Two solutions;

1 - go modern, get rid of the list and use a www forum and you can have
sections for whatever topic you choose and easy access from anywhere.

2 - mark email headings with OT, DIGITAL, PAW, GENERAL, LENS, BODY, FILM,
etc, so that you can filter incoming email into appropriate folders. Then if
you don't want to see OT or PAW you don't have to look just periodically
delete the contents of the folder.

the only ones who have it.

I still need to work out how to get the Flashtrax into the house unnoticed
first though! I guess a lens might be easier as she probably
(hopefully) wouldn't notice that it is new amongst all the other lenses.

Think I may have to wait till dividend time at the end of our financial year
an suggest we each have a little spending spree...

Rob,

I got a old customer deal for 320GBP, very pleased with that. Flashtrax is
on my list but now not until the summer...

Version 8.0 is fine, as Cotty said, certainly 7 and 8 run ok with two disks.
In version 8.0 make sure that the level of detail is set to low in the

Funny, but someone (or several folks) actually suggested the use of the DOF
feature for the use of M/K lenses. I wonder if someone at Pentax picked up
on this, or if they had already thought to do this and had simply rushed the
camera to market before they could implement this feature.

You know, with these fixes and at $1350 (B&H) this is a pretty nice camera.
I'm now deeply curious at the proposed "low end" Baby D.

Pretty much exactly what I predicted would be the best we could hope for,

while
it was apparent that these capabilities were technically feasible, I still
thought that the hyper manual stop-down metering was too much to expect.

My dear Ziggo,

I never left. I still have a pair of MXs and a 3 Pentax lenses, one of which
I use often ;-)

If you mean that I could sell up the Canon stuff and get an *ist D, I can't.
The financial loss would be too great to stomach - as purchasers of the *ist
D will find out. Besides, it was a very considered decision and I have no
regrets. Envy, but no regrets. I'm happy where I'm at.

I'll pick up a used *ist D in 2 years for a song ;-)

Just as I thought but pricing is still under review this week and will not
be confirmed until launch day.

The first batch in the UK will be going to CameraWorld and I already have
one reserved. They are very impressed by the camera. Accessories will follow
a month later and I am told that there is to be a new flash.

Pricing in the UK will be as follows:

For your info, official prices are:

Pentax *ist D camera body with smc 18-35mm f/4-5.6 FA AL J lens £1529.99

equivalent]

Pentax *ist D camera body with smc 24-90mm f/3.5-4.5 FA AL lens £1799.99

It is just that the SRP of £1,400 appeared to be a lot higher than many UK
photo magazines had been suggesting!

I am waiting to see what the online dealer who sold me the *ist SLR at a
great price is going to sell the *istD at.

The *ist SLR camera was being discounted as soon as it was available for
sale and I am hoping the same thing will happen with the *istD, although if
it is going to be in short supply this might not be likely.

In addition I am checking on a number of German online retailers to see what
their prices are going to be,

Harold Owen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Guys,

The price war will be very interesting and Pentax may already be dead in the
water, look at the prices, body only;

*istD 1400 GBPrecommended
Olympus E-1 1400 GBPrecommended
Nikon D100 1399 GBPstreet
Canon D10 1299 GBPstreet
Canon EOS 300D 899 GBPexpected ( 1000 GBP plus lens
advertised )

The street price has to be no more than 1100 GBP or else it will be a dead
duck.

Has anyone out their placed an order for one?

Your meanderings have caused my brain to actually start working.

Canon FD system, at one point, had some tiny plastic part used for manual
diaphragm activation, did they not? Used for reversed lenses, as FD lenses
not
mounted revert to F5.6 diaphragm opening.

Why is it not possible to create such a part to mount temporarily in the
back
of K mount lenses which are mounted on the *ist line? Obviously the Canon
part did not suffer any particular space limitations, given that it was
intended
for reversed lenses.

Am I going mad?

Well, there aren't that many DSLR's out there, just about every one in
production made the list, including the Sigma. They did leave out the D1X
and H, as well as the 1D, probably because they're a bit long in the tooth
and their resolution isn't all that impressive.

It's notable (to them) due to the claim that's it's the smallest DSLR and it
takes Pentax Af and MF lenses. They also mention the good viewfinder.

They must have had another pre-production model, lets just wait and

The funny thing is, as I write this in MS Entourage (Outlook equivalent),
aluminum is flagged and the spell checker (if I ever use :-) would correct
it to aluminium.

OTOH, when I write aluminum in MS Word, it does not flag but it does when I
spelled aluminium.

Is aluminum some kind of "American" spelling, or aluminum and aluminium
indicates any subtle difference, or no distinction at all?

The bottom line question is "which is correct"?

Thank you,

Ken

In US and Canada it is Aluminum.
In the rest of the world it is Aluminium.
Take your pick.

Why must it be 25% less? It must be 900 pounds so you can afford it, or so
Pentax can sell it?

So that it is competitive and Pentax can sell it in the UK. Just compare the

Any system is not the be all and end all, just like with many other things,
when you feel it doesn't perform then you are free to change. What is more
important is that you are still a photographer.

Many thanks for the KMP site, which has given me and many others an
invaluable source of Pentax information. I'm glad to hear that you will keep
it going.

Just keep on taking those pictures.

Good Luck.

Hi, gang
Some days ago, a friend was given a bulk of Fuji 250T
film, exp. date unknown. She loaded some rolls, and
gave me a couple to test. I did some web research but
the only info I found about this film was obscure
references to 35mm and 16mm negative movie film. So,
knowing only it was tungsten neg film I exposed it and
sent it to develop. My dear photofinisher almost kills
me. The film went out with a layer of a dark substance
wich sticks to the fingers like laser-toner dust. He
thought I ruined the developer and filter of his
machine, but luckily not.
The image is there but covered by this dark layer. He
thinks it's another process film, maybe the previous
to C41, or something more obscure.
Somebody knows what da hell this film is?
Regards and thanks in advance

Steve,

It doesn't matter, I stick a 200mm FA2.8IF on to my MZ-S and I have black
and silver, so what, I can shoot my targets, don't care about the colour
scheme.

Ziggy

It has not effect on function, but if you are spending that much on a lens
and they make the matching kind, it's frustrating not to be able to get it.
Certainly we care about colors for cars, although it doesn't effect mileage.

Provided that there will be a camera matching the Limited lenses, what kind
of interface would you like to see? Pentax have been all over the place
regarding interface for their cameras the last decade. All of them have
basically been great but for different usage and preferences. Eg. to my mind
theres no doubt that the traditional dial interface is best for working on a
tripod whereas the newer wheel interface is better for settings when your
cameras is held up to your eyes.

I suggest the following interface for a Limited camera wich I assume is the
closest thing to an "LX with AF", a nomenclature used by Pentax camera
division boss, we will ever seen.
The new fad of having large LCD panels on the back of the camera, like on
the *ist, makes room for traditional controls on the top plate of the
camera. I suggest a Limited lens focus ring finished metal shutter speed
dial on top. This dial should have an "A" setting addition to the
shutterspeed. The camera have two wheels, like on the *ist D. Some may think
that this is overkill but I think it adds flexibility because it gives you
both manual and hyper manual with no need for "hold" switch like on the
MZ-S. In A, both lens and camera, the camera give hyper program like on the
Z-1p. When lens is off the A setting, the camera varies between hyper manual
and aperture priority auto like on the MZ-S. Switches for metering modes and
drive modes should be placed like on the MZ-S. AF system interface like on
the *ist D. A large LCD panel on the back would detract from the camera
traditional look and finish, matching the Limited lenses, while it may give
room for a host of features, perhaps via custom fuctions, without cluttering
the interface. Such a camera have the potential of appelaing to a lot of
advanced Pentax users whether they come from the Z-1p, MZ-S, LX or any of
the medium format cameras.

Bruce, with all due respect, but I am afraid you misunderstood me. I was
asking for some practical, let me underline it, practical, advise. Perhaps I
should've put word practical into my question.

Of course, any tool that can take pictures can be used for any photographic

to practice in Harlem, nor I have a view camera.

My humble request remains... Please, could you give me some practical advise
