Great tour, only 4 of us, so the guide let us spend extra time at

It was nice ot hear all that silence for a few hours.

Got a few good rock art shots as well.

Went to see the Wynn, Venetian Hotels. Back to the Mirage for the

Yup. Hehehe. Re off list.

Well, still busy with stuff, but will post some comments on PESOs in a day or
two.

Sorry if I missed any of yours. One of the things with not being on for a
long time, AOL starts automatically emptying out my email box. So it had gotten
down to 20 unread messages. It had started at 1,000 unread messages.

OTOH, maybe that's not a bad thing, as AOL is ruthless, something I can't be.
But I know I definitely missed some PESOs I would rather of not missed.

Glad you are still here, us women gotta stick together.

OT: I'm back

2007-01-17 Thread Eactivist
Computer woes kept me away for about 3-31/2 weeks. Think it was the latter.

Some may remember I had just got a new computer, a AMD 64X2. My old desktop
still worked, but I was getting blue error screens (Windows) more and more.
Plus it was only a Pentium III, so it was slow and I was pushing the memory
and that was a problem too. So I figured time for an upgrade.

The new computer is fine, except for not having enough drive bays. I posted
about two days worth of messages to the list before I had problems. I decided
to network my old desktop with my new so I could copy files easier, not have
to format and copy stuff to about 50 CDs.

Uh. I think that took two weeks all by itself. First I tried just Ethernet
cables -- a friend had told me that would work. Nope. Tried a crossover cable.
Nope. Got a USB cable with software that worked. Except the USB cable while
file copying would time out now and then.
I also have an old LaserJet that needed a parallel port which the new
machine doesn't have. A guy at Fry's convinced me I needed a print server
thingee,
and that didn't work either.

So I went back to my Belkin router. When I got my router about a year and a
half ago or more, I bought it because it could also be used just as a
gateway, since I did not have broadband. Plugged everything in that and,
bingo, it
worked. Could also network in the laptop, wireless to the router. I had
stopped using it wireless between old desktop and laptop because an upstairs
neighbor complained that it interfered with his radio.

Took back the print server, and finally found a simple parallel to USB
cable. The simple solution to make the LaserJet work. The other had been
overkill.

But once the home network worked, my modem no longer did. Trying to sign
onto AOL it seemed it kept trying to go through my network, although I kept
trying to configure it just for phone modem.

So I gave up and ordered a cable modem and service from Comcast. Got the
self install kit, finally. Tried to set it up. Didn't work. Nothing in their
literature/box said that you have to get the service turned on first. In fact
it
implied you could set up an account just using their software, at least if
you are an existing Comcast TV customer. Well, finally called them. Yup, you
have to call them to set up service first. Got all that done. Still didn't
work. Called back a couple of times, finally they sent out a technician. There
were filters on the cable nodes that he had to remove. He said they are
supposed to that every time, send a technician out when some starts service,
as
this whole area has filters. Duh.

While all this was going on, my old desktop stopped booting up. Have finally
fixed that. Seems maybe I have a bad outlet that tripped the surge
suppressor and it corrupted the BIOS boot up. Pressing F1 and redoing BIOS
setup fixed
that. But until I got around to it, I was a bit worried my board had fried.
Still worried about the outlet.

Well, everything works now. All computers -- new desktop, old desktop, and
laptop are home networked -- cable modem is fast, fast, and now I can get AOL
free.

I should have made this long story brief. Except, frankly, I couldn't quite
believe it -- what kept not working or going wrong -- as it happened.

And if I wasn't pretty darn computer literate, what would I have done?
Geeze. I pity the poor novices.

suppressor and it corrupted the BIOS boot up. Pressing F1 and redoing BIOS
 setup fixed
that. But until I got around to it, I was a bit worried my board had fried.
 Still worried about the outlet.

Well, everything works now. All computers -- new desktop, old desktop, and
laptop are home networked -- cable modem is fast, fast, and now I can get
 AOL
 free.

I should have made this long story brief. Except, frankly, I couldn't quite
believe it -- what kept not working or going wrong -- as it happened.

And if I wasn't pretty darn computer literate, what would I have done?
Geeze. I pity the poor novices.

 Sometimes I really hate computers.

 When I don't love them.

OT: I'm back, Everyone Happy?, PS Class Questions

2006-09-19 Thread Eactivist
I'm back from trip. Had fun, will share some photos later.

Is everyone happy with the K10D?

Looks pretty good to me, and I didn't even know it was going to have two new
sensitivity settings -- which I like.

Okay, I started a Photoshop class last night. Taught by our local civic arts.
Arrived back in time for the class just as I returned from trip. Not what I
hoped for since they are using Elements 2 and PS 6. However, I already learned
two new things (new to me) so I will stick with it. I will learn something
despite the older software.

But when cameras were discussed the first night the teacher only mentioned:
Canon, Nikon, and Olympus -- basically saying they are the only serious
players. I was not Pentaxian enough to debate him, or not Pentaxian again
enough to
debate him. :-)

Thinking about taking in a specification sheet for the K10D before the class
is over, and maybe sales numbers for the DLs and DSs.

Isn't Pentax outselling Olympus? Or is it?

Anyone have any other suggestions of what to take in to get this guy better
informed?

He didn't know about Elements 5 with curves, so I told him about that.
Obviously he's a bit behind, but since he teaches classes to a fair number of
people
over the course of a year maybe he should be upgraded.

I agree with Shel.
If you're paying for this class you could probably do with a more current
version of PS - unless you're totally new to PS.

Also if the teacher is a graphic artist/designer not a photographer,
you'll get a totally different view of PS.

I say this from experience after attending a couple of PS classes being
taught by a non photographer.

I don't think you need to do anything to inform your instructor about Pentax
except show him some images taken with a Pentax.

Well, it isn't him. It's the computers they have, that the city can afford.
They are running Windows NT, so they don't support newer versions of software.
Supposedly they will upgrade someday to new computers and XP, but he did not

It's easy to say he's an idiot, but the only classes I found with current
software are through the local camera store and they don't go into very much

Shel, they guy must reach about 50 people a year in his classes, so it

I wouldn't want to judge an instructor without knowing more about his
background and reviewing his class. Using software that is somewhat
behind the times, or lower spec than you're using, you have to
evaluate what is being articulated and apply the concepts to your
current tool suite.

Regards his comments about cameras, well, I'm pretty tired of trying
to justify Pentax or Sony or Panasonic .. .or anything else ... even
to photographers who should know better. So he has a prejudice to
prefer Canon, Nikon and Olympus: so do thousands of other
photographers, although Olympus less so than the other two.

A Photoshop class should be camera agnostic. From the standpoint of
image processing, what camera made a particular image file, RAW or
JPEG, is almost completely irrelevant presuming that Photoshop's RAW
conversion is applicable. Given the level of the software being used,
you're not going to get into RAW processing with Camera Raw at all,
which is a darn shame as that is where most of the capabilities of
digital cameras are, in RAW format capture. You'll be talking
entirely RGB level editing capabilities, and almost entirely 8bit
work. There's a lot to be had there, if the instructor is any good.

Yeah, I know that is why I was disappointed, not using RAW conversion in CS
(which I have) or CS2. I really did want that.

He taught art and photography classes in colleges for something like 20
years. Basically retired now, I guess, and teaching classes at the local civic
arts
(adult ed). They get some pretty decent teachers here. I picked up a few
things already, but I plan to go through some books afterwards, like Frasier's.
I
need sort of hands on to learn better, just reading and doing my own exercises
doesn't do it for me. Maybe a book followup will. Hopefully.

I agree that the difference between PS v6.0 CS2 is substantial, but
the basics haven't changed.

Curves, Levels, layers, layer masking, adjustment layers, USM (the
major tools for image processing as far as I'm concerned), are the
same. Once you have a firm grounding using those tools, then you can
start in on the extras offered in CS CS2.

Have fun Marnie.

OT - I'm back Monterey Trip

2006-04-23 Thread Eactivist
I'll try to be brief. Or as brief as I can be. :-)

Mom had a colostomy operation a week ago. She's been home about two days.
Seems to be doing okay. But the big issue will be getting her back on her feet
and walking. She hasn't walked since she went into the hospital. Nothing really
wrong with her legs and feet, but the floors there were slick and she was/is
weak. I am afraid of her losing her mind/body connection with her feet. But I
think I can get her up again. I am hiring a caregiver to help me too.

She went in last Friday, had the operation Saturday night and was supposed to
be there for a week.

Since she was gone and I didn't have the expense of paying someone to take
care of her, I thought, sheesh, I should take advantage of this and go
somewhere.

I okayed it with her doctor. I went last Wed - Thurs.

I went to Monterey for 2 1/2 days and 2 nights. Saw the 17-mile drive (and
took shots), Carmel (didn't), scenic drive in Carmel (didn't), the Monterey
Aquarium (did), and Monterey Fisherman's Wharf (did). The weather was nice both
days, just clouding up at night the last day. It was sort of whirlwind, and I
was a bit pushed and tired, but I am glad I got away.

Also while searching for one particular gallery in Carmel to look at one
particular painter's paintings (which I did finally see), I came across a
photographic gallery. With 8-9 original (resales, not reprints) Ansel Adams!!!
A few
other famous photographers too.

It was neat to be able to get up and eyeball them closely. Impressive. One
was an Indian pueblo type village with the moon over it. It was selling for
$55,000. One of the smaller cheaper ones was $12,000. I should have written the
titles down, but didn't. Sooner or later I may find them all, I think I've seen
reproductions in books of some of them.

Too bad he couldn't make that much during his lifetime, huh?

And I had a nice geeky photo hobbyist type talk with the clerk in the gallery.

I also saw George Lepp's California Poppy Show at the Monterey Natural
History Museum. I didn't know it was going to be there, I just discovered it
was
there by reading a little tourist magazine they hand out in all the hotels and
shops there. I had seen some of his poppy pictures before in a digital
slideshow
when I went to a Lepp weekend about a year ago. But it was nice to see some
prints in person. (Still wish I knew where he found all those fields of poppies
in CA, he told me, but I never found them. Maybe I will try again.)

All in all, a satisfying trip. Although I was still pretty tired during it.
And a quite photographic trip. :-)

I hadn't planned to come back to PDML for about another month. Not until my
programming project is finished. But Mom's operation has derailed me. I think
I'll mainly be busy with her this week.

So I'll hang around for a week or so until she is better. Then unsubscribe
again to get back to my programming project undistracted.

I simply don't lurk well. :-)

supposed to

be there for a week.

Since she was gone and I didn't have the expense of paying someone to
take

care of her, I thought, sheesh, I should take advantage of this and go
somewhere.

I okayed it with her doctor. I went last Wed - Thurs.

I went to Monterey for 2 1/2 days and 2 nights. Saw the 17-mile drive
(and
took shots), Carmel (didn't), scenic drive in Carmel (didn't), the
Monterey
Aquarium (did), and Monterey Fisherman's Wharf (did). The weather was
nice both
days, just clouding up at night the last day. It was sort of
whirlwind, and I

was a bit pushed and tired, but I am glad I got away.

Also while searching for one particular gallery in Carmel to look at
one
particular painter's paintings (which I did finally see), I came
across a
photographic gallery. With 8-9 original (resales, not reprints) Ansel
Adams!!! A few

other famous photographers too.

It was neat to be able to get up and eyeball them closely. Impressive.
One
was an Indian pueblo type village with the moon over it. It was
selling for
$55,000. One of the smaller cheaper ones was $12,000. I should have
written the
titles down, but didn't. Sooner or later I may find them all, I think
I've seen

reproductions in books of some of them.

Too bad he couldn't make that much during his lifetime, huh?

And I had a nice geeky photo hobbyist type talk with the clerk in the
gallery.

I also saw George Lepp's California Poppy Show at the Monterey Natural
History Museum. I didn't know it was going to be there, I just
discovered it was
there by reading a little tourist magazine they hand out in all the
hotels and
shops there. I had seen some of his poppy pictures before in a digital
slideshow
when I went to a Lepp weekend about a year ago. But it was nice to see
some
prints in person. (Still wish I knew where he found all those fields
of poppies

in CA, he told me, but I never found them. Maybe I will try again.)

All in all, a satisfying trip. Although I was still pretty tired
during it.

And a quite photographic trip. :-)

I hadn't planned to come back to PDML for about another month. Not
until my
programming project is finished. But Mom's operation has derailed me.
I think

I'll mainly be busy with her this week.

So I'll hang around for a week or so until she is better. Then

Right, I'm definitely off to lie down.

OT: I'm Back -- Follow Up on Image Tank Saga

2005-05-19 Thread Eactivist
Well, I went off list for a while, when I put Mom in a nursing home for a
week to get a rest. Then I have been involved in other things. Mom is had been
home for a long time, none the worst for wear, although the nursing home lost
1/2 her clothes and one of her hearing aids and I had to sue them in small
claims court. That is a long, long story that isn't finished yet. And I doubt I
will share more here -- but beware if you have an aged relative with dementia
--
nursing homes may not be good places for them. I have done much better with
hired caregivers at home. And if I ever put her somewhere again so I can get a
rest, I think I will go with a private home that takes in people. Nursing homes
are understaffed and the staff is stressed and overworked and maybe not that
good either -- undertrained.
==

On to the Image Tank saga. As some of you know, I bought an Image Tank about
a year ago and used it about four times during that year and after the last
time it went belly up. Didn't work. I had used it on a NorCal PDML meet in San
Jose and it still had pictures on it on it. So I went to Fry's and they removed
the laptop hard disk, and I got the pictures off it, and shared some on PDML.

I had written the manufacturer and they said they weren't the manufacturer
(as it turns out). I shared that on this list.

Then several on the list said write mydigitaldiscount.com where I had
originally bought it.

I had doubts they would do anything since it had been over a year since I
bought it. Well, with one thing and another (mainly Mom stuff), I didn't get
around to writing them until about three weeks ago. I also felt I had to find
the
receipt -- but it turns out I could just have gone to mydigitaldiscount.com
since they keep the receipts on file with one's account info.

I finally wrote them. They said the warranty (they give a year's warranty on
things, which I had not really thought about at all), had expired by TWO
WEEKS. I felt totally dumb. But, OTOH, I had thought it had expired by months.
I
really hadn't paid any attention to that.

So I said, Hey, I am on a camera list of 500 people. Think of all the good
things I can say about mydigitaldiscount.com. Besides, I obviously got a lemon.

So here is what they did --

He (the customer service representative I talked to/back and forth through
emails) sold me an extended warranty (which, I obviously, had to really buy at
the time I bought it, or before the year's warranty had run out). He also sold
it to me at a major discount.

Then he let me return the Image Tank. He was going to exchange it for
another, newer model, but I took a look at it, and it looked exactly the same
(in the
web picture). I didn't want another one, no way I would trust one again.
Besides, I had thought from the beginning that it was poorly made even before
it
went belly up.

Since I bought the Image Tank for $200 originally, I tried to get him to let
me exchange it for a storage device with picture review (the Image Tank had
none) that now sells for $250 -- with me paying $50 more for the difference.
See, the price of the Image Tank has gone way down from when I first bought it.

With one thing and another he said he couldn't do that, they wouldn't
consider it a comparable exchange. I couldn't really argue with that -- and I
didn't
figure arguing would get me anywhere either. :-) I did want a working storage
device without having to pay a lot more money, get something out of the
defunct Image Tank purchase. (I could have gotten one with picture review with
spending another $150, but that would have been pointless. I wouldn't really
have
gotten any benefit out of my original Image Tank purchase.)

So I agreed to pay $20 more to get a Vosonic X-Drive VP2160. No picture
review, but pretty small and probably more reliable than the Image Tank. (Let's
hope.)

While I'd prefer picture review, when I originally bought the Image Tank, one
could only get it on a few really expensive devices. (BOY, things change in a
year).

The Vosonic will be arriving next week. I am happy. I really just wanted a
working storage device and not feel I had p***ed money away on the Image Tank.

And I said I would rave about mydigitaldiscount.com. So here's my rave --

They didn't have to sell me an extended warranty so I could return the Image
Tank. I felt this customer service representative really worked with me to
reach a mutually happy solution.

I always felt mydigitaldiscount.com was a pretty good place, now I *know*
they are.

RAVE, RAVE, RAVE. ;-)

These memory cassettes have good points and bad points. On the bad
side, they'll only take 36 frames. One the good side, there's only
one resolution to choose from (highest) - you can compress the files
later in your computer for Internet purposes. And, if your batteries
run out, the capture system still works! Just shoot away, setting
your own aperture and shutter speed manually! How's that for

Seriously, we're always glad to see you here (again), David.

WRT the memory card, the K1000 has an innovative and daring new type
of memory card: a sort of anologue memory strip.

Instead of fiddling with little slots, the whole back of the camera
opens to accept the card. The card itself is a largish, ergonomically
shaped cylinder. Just pull the cellulose capture area across the
back of the shutter to a handy take-up spool, close the back of the
camera, and you're set to go.

These memory cassettes have good points and bad points. On the bad

Hi, again, Lukasz,

Well, as you now know I bought an LX.

And, you're right, I was broke. And, in fact, I'm still broke. I paid for
the LX by cheque; just wait until Vic tries to cash it. Hee hee hee...

But, seriously, yeah, this summer I was having serious cash flow problems.
Two things changed a little bit. First, over the last few weeks we've
gotten a little busier at work (it may be only temporary, but it's meant two
1/2 decent paycheques). Plus, I changed residences last month, and that
saves me quite a bit of rent each month. Those two situations combined to
allow me this purchase.

Besides, when you hear of something you really want, you figure out a way,
right? vbg I mean, this is the first body I've bought in well over a
year. I've been a very reasonable boy...

And, your joke is in no way offensive. I'd have sold a kidney for it, but I
only have one left, and I need that one. I already sold the first one to
pay for my Leica...

cheers,
frank

I was as commited a cat person as you could hope to meet until
 Leica came into my life.
Now I see cats for what they are: foul, filthy little alergen

Wow. Must be some kinda weird rangefinder vibe . . .

  Medium sized dogs ;-)
I have a Bernese Mountain dog and a Belgian Tervuren (or
Belgian Sheepdog
of the Tervuren variety according to the CKC). Puppy is also
a Terv.
Prepare for all my submissions to the PUG for the next year
to have a
  distinctly doggy flavour

You can tell the hardcore dog people. Most of the people I know
would classify a Belgian Shepherd or a Bernese as a big dog.
My Rottie bitch is 90 pounds and 27 inches at the shoulder, my
male is 28 inches and 100 pounds.
I don't think of them as big dogs, more like chihuahuas.

I had both a Belgian and a Bernese in a couple of obedience
classes a while back.
Nice dogs.
Especially the Bernese and the Belgian.

Weird. I got a Leica this summer, and I still like my cat. Go figure.

As a cat lover, though, I have to agree with your assessment of the
beasts. Maybe I like them because they remind me of ~me~.

I've always said that dogs are what we wish humans to be; cats reflect
us as we really are. g
