I see we're going to have to go over the proper PDML procedure here.

First discern there is an issue.

Frame a question to the PDML and post it.

Then decided while waiting for a reply to check Google, Yahoo, Ask, (yes
each search engine get's worse), until finally trying Bing, not the
worst exactly, but certainly the last.

Post message that answer has been found, and apologize for wasting group
bandwidth.

Receive well thought out replies, for next three to six days.

Hi Everyone!

I’ve had my new Epson V600 scanner for a few months now, and
ironically

I’ve been using it more for document scanning than film.

But today I’ve stole some time to try it out on some color film. This
was taken with my Pentax MX, and along the film edge it says Kodak
Safety Film 5035. Anyone have any idea what that means? If I once
knew, I’ve long since forgotten.

Of this series, this has always been my favorite. I did some dust
removal, but I can see more work needs to be done. Also, does it look
like theres a bit of a blue color cast to it? Or does it look ok to
you guys?

Scanning quality doesn’t look too shabby for a $200 scanner, though if
the expertise of the list says otherwise, I’m willing to be schooled.

Comments welcome.

The interface isn't good compared to the best software, but it's good compared
to Vuescan. I tend to like the fact that settings return to base after each

hanging problems, but I'm using the latest scanner and software on s powerful

I have a Nikon scanner and an Epson scanner.

The advantage of using Vuscan is I have the same user interface for both
scanners. Plus, Vuescan allows me to save as .DNG files. I haven't tried
the Epson software, so I don't know if it will allow saving as .DNG, but
the Nikon Scan software would not.

Vuescan also gives me a cleaner scan than the Nikon Scan software.

With the Epson software I just try to get close, primarily with the levels and
color balance adjustment. I scan at 4800 for the most part with unsharp mask
turned off, then fine tune and sharpen as necessary in Photoshop. I scanned a
bunch of 40 year old bw negs and transparencies for "Elapsed Times" mag, and
they looked great in print.

You nailed it, Paul.

I tried to make minor adjustments to it and the results were all over
the map with tiny changes in the controls. And the UI was clearly
designed by somebody with no understanding of either UI design or Mac
s/w development.

The Epson s/w is by far the better choice, if imperfect.

It was a bit awkward, but I was able to get a scan with it on my epson.
The epson software, on the other hand would just hang. It did seem to
think that I was running Mavericks rather than El Capitan, so that might
be part of the issue.

The big plus I found for Vuescan when applied to my (once, state of the art;
now, desperately ancient) Canon film scanner is that it allowed multiple pass
scanning, which the Canon software did not.

The really big downside to Vuescan is the utterly unintuitive interface. It was
(I haven't used it for a very long time) the most unfriendly GUI software I've
ever used. That may have changed.

To Mike’s point, here’s the link to the VueScan Scanner Software:
http://www.hamrick.com

And from the webpage:

"VueScan can output scanned documents, photos, and film in PDF, JPEG and TIFF
formats. It can also recognize text using OCR and create multi-page pdfs using
both flatbed scanners and scanners with automatic document feeders”

The Epson software does the same as described above—the multi-page PDF feature
is great when scanning multipage materials for my students. Optical Character
Recognition (ORC) software is included. I’ll have to start playing around with
the photo crease reduction and dust removal features—see how far I can push
them for prints and negatives.

I’m not sure what I would gain by downloading VueScan, since I have the same
features with Epson’s software. Any thoughts if VueScan’s software is, in
fact, superior to Epson’s software?

Hi Everyone!

I’ve had my new Epson V600 scanner for a few months now, and ironically

Comments welcome.

once knew, I’ve long since forgotten.

Of this series, this has always been my favorite. I did some dust
removal, but I can see more work needs to be done. Also, does it
look like theres a bit of a blue color cast to it? Or does it look
ok to you guys?

Scanning quality doesn’t look too shabby for a $200 scanner, though
if the expertise of the list says otherwise, I’m willing to be
schooled.

Comments welcome.

Kodak 5035 is Kodacolor II ASA 100.

It was superseded by Kodacolor VR 100 and then Gold 100. "Safety Film"
just means it has an acetate base rather than nitrocellulose.

http://www.taphilo.com/Photo/kodakfilmnumxref.shtml

I don't see a color cast, and it looks just fine for a $200 scanner. You
only need a more expensive scanner if you have to scan medium or large
format negatives/transparencies. I don't know if the V600 has a back
light area large enough to handle them.

If you do, there are work-arounds that will get the job done.

It's a good image. There's a nice balance between the foreground and the
kind of triangular shape of the mass of balloons & the guy pulling on
the guide rope and one balloon already in the air.

You might boost the saturation of the balloons just a touch, but you'd
want to mask it on an adjustment layer (Photoshop) or use an adjustment
brush (Lightroom) to confine the saturation boost to just the balloons.

I won't say that it needs it, but it could make the image more pleasing
... or maybe not. You'd have to try it to find out.

Hi Everyone!

I’ve had my new Epson V600 scanner for a few months now, and ironically I’ve
been using it more for document scanning than film.

But today I’ve stole some time to try it out on some color film. This was
taken with my Pentax MX, and along the film edge it says Kodak Safety Film
5035. Anyone have any idea what that means? If I once knew, I’ve long

I've got a whole bunch of negatives and slides that I'd like to get
scanned. I've let perfection be the enemy of the good enough for too
many years. Rather than waiting on a top notch slide scanner, I've
realized that what I need to do is just scan them all well enough that I
can look through them on lightroom, figure out which ones are good
enough for web work, and which photos are good enough to be worth the
effort of a careful scan.

I haven't yet tried it yet, but I have a many years old "Epson

I can see a few white marks in the sky but, otherwise, nothing to worry about.
Crisp and well-balanced colour wise. You may be right baout the slight blue
cast but, if it's actually there, it's nothing I would worry about. My only
disclaimer is that I'm looking at a ~6x8" screen image. A larger print may draw
different comments.

1st color film scan on new Epson V600

2016-02-26 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone!

I’ve had my new Epson V600 scanner for a few months now, and ironically I’ve
been using it more for document scanning than film.

But today I’ve stole some time to try it out on some color film. This was
taken with my Pentax MX, and along the film edge it says Kodak Safety Film
5035. Anyone have any idea what that means? If I once knew, I’ve long since
forgotten.

Of this series, this has always been my favorite. I did some dust removal, but
I can see more work needs to be done. Also, does it look like theres a bit of
a blue color cast to it? Or does it look ok to you guys?

Scanning quality doesn’t look too shabby for a $200 scanner, though if the
expertise of the list says otherwise, I’m willing to be schooled.

Comments welcome.
