OT: World's Best Photo-Op

2022-07-12 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Brooks Falls in Alaska's Katmai National Park is the best place in the
world to watch brown bears feasting on salmon as they swim upstream to
spawn.

My wife, my son and I visited there decades ago; it is still one of the two
most memorable travel experiences of my life (along with watching the
flowing lava at Kilauea at close range). They have a wooden platform about
15 feet off the ground, overlooking the falls, for observing and
photographing. When we were there, there were always 3 or 4 professionals
with huge lenses that spent all day at the overlook. (I have a few images
of my own, but none of great quality, as that was pre-digital, and my lens
was not that long.)

Now there is a webcam so all can enjoy the spectacle:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mphg2feuAPo

(Note that one can watch live or go back to view the activity earlier in
the day.)

Katmai is in my view the most under-rated national park in the system. The
park and preserve encompass 4,093,077 acres (6,395.43 sq mi; 16,564.09
km2), which is between the sizes of Connecticut and New Jersey. Most of the
national park is a designated wilderness area. In addition to Brooks Falls
with its abundance of bear, one can hike through the Valley of Ten Thousand
Smokes, a 40-square-mile, 100-to-700-foot-deep (30 to 213 m) pyroclastic
flow. The park includes 18 individual volcanoes, seven of which have been
active since 1900. Oh yes, there is excellent salmon and trout fishing,
moose and beaver sightings, and eagles, eagles, eagles.

The national park has limited capacity, to preserve the natural conditions
and for safety reasons.. When we were there, sll the cabins in the park
were full, so we stayed at an inn in King Salmon, and flew in and out by
float plane each day for three days. Now, reservations are required for
entry into the park, and are fully booked a year in advance. Still, I
highly recommend Katmai if you are able to go there. It is the experience
of a lifetime.

Enjoy the webcam, in any event!

Thanks. I think that was one that you had commented favorably on when I first
posted it, so that was part of why it made it into the gallery.

The main reason that the set was so small was because I found it so hard to
find the motivation to go out and take photos this year. I hope that changes
next year.

I discovered that it was also an outstanding Astrophotography lens

latest best attempt at an hdr of the waning eclipse

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/31894921907/in/album-72157675791773657/

I've come to the realization that I really need to actually plan these
things out and think of them *before* I try to take the photos. I'm also
quite certain that I'll come to this very same conclusion again, about a
day after I next try to photograph a lunar eclipse.

In any case, I think that a bit more careful processing, choosing only a
couple source frames, and choosing them carefully, made a noticeable
improvement, but there's still plenty more room left for improvement.

RE: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?

2019-01-18 Thread jcoyle
I agree with Stan on the hard-copy v. digital issue. I edit a quarterly
journal which is distributed to many countries, and while our printer accepts
PDF format files for the publication, getting it into a bound format is
expensive, and distribution even more so. We currently use two people to post
the journal out, one in the USA for North American members and one in Germany
for European members: this gives us the lowest postal rates possible.
About 20% of our members have opted for a PDF-only version, which is much
easier (and cost-less), which they download from our web site.

I think Stan's come up with a great idea, and I'd certainly participate (if I
could find anything halfway decent to submit!).

Alan, a couple of thoughts…

First, going from a handful of digits to an image on paper is non-trivial.
Whether it is real paper or virtual paper (e.g., pdf). That is one big reason
why I did not even think twice about trying to step in for Mark - he is a
master printer, I am not. So, to get to your option of a gallery of PDF
versions of contributors images, the contributors or someone else would need to
do the “printing.” Which is a bit different from submitting a file and letting
Master Printer Mark do his magic to bring out the best image on paper the he
could achieve.

I can, on the other hand, conveniently store and make accessible the digital
form for viewing on your phone, tablet, or desktop. RAW or jpeg, full size or
bare minimum size, makes no difference. When a viewer clicks on a thumbnail,
the Zenfolio software creates a screen version in the default size.

It is a simple virtual toggle switch for me to say whether the original file
can be downloaded. My assumption was that PDML contributors to such a gallery
would prefer not to have the download option, but it really makes no difference
to me. Some, like Ann, derive some income from their images and I assume would
not want the digital file accessible.

I am open for additional comments…

Re: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?

2019-01-17 Thread ann sanfedele
Stan assumes correctly - I really am living on a shoestring...part of
one even, but do get some income from  my smugmug site, and income from
my calendar sales, and a couple of books on lulu and cafepress sales
that help a lot.. I sell downloads of small jpgs for personal use from
smugmug at a low price  and high res files for editorial use - (some
exceptions but only with my permission )  and there are others on the
list that are even more actively gathering funds for their work in
exhibits and in print media..   so no, I would not like the download
option for the online PDML annual.   Of course the smugmug site is
like a stock photo agency, in a way, it is public and everyone can view
the photos in a a variety of sizes as much as they like and I hope they
do :-)

Re: PDML "Best Of 2018" Gallery?

2019-01-17 Thread Stanley Halpin

Feel free to undertake the challenge.

I haven't offered to do it because it's beyond my level of competency. If
someone else wants to take on the project, I'll contribute images and for
certain I will buy copies of any resulting book.

But it's not something I feel comfortable I could do without EFFING it up.

So, here are my thoughts about an alternative venue for us to share our Best

I have a Zenfolio account, unlimited storage. I already pay the annual fee,
no extra cost for adding another Gallery to my collection.

Are are my thoughts on configuration of a Gallery for our sharing purposes:

Access limited, password protected. No real need for this, but possible
in case anyone is nervous about putting they best stuff out there on the web.
I could also leave the Gallery open and password protect access to individual
images at the owner's request.

No Expiration date for the Gallery.

Downloading not allowed.

Max viewing size Zenfolio’s XXLarge = 1550x960

Titles etc Not searchable

Metadata viewable?

Show Number of Visitors to the Gallery?

Do Not allow viewers to order prints (again, I can adjust this or any of
the other parameters image by image if so requested by the contributor.)

If this seems like a reasonable/useful option, then the way forward would be:
A - comment on the proposed parameters
B - I don’t see a way for others to directly upload.  Send me up to 5
images that you would like to have included. Let me know Image Title and
Caption (caption = your name or email or other identifier.) I will load them
to the site, untouched, no editing, you submit what you want displayed.

I leave town for 6 weeks on 25 February, so 20 February would be a reasonable
first deadline.

Ann, I just revised the Title and Caption sections on my sample images. As you
can see, there is room in the Caption area for a webpage address or whatever.

Geez, I can't believe that Coors is the second best selling beer in the

the stuff because it wasn't available East of the Mississippi.  Then it
became generally available, and most of us couldn't believe we actually

three best McMilky McWay

2018-09-14 Thread Larry Colen
I should have been getting other things done, but I got side tracked,
trying to figure out ways to smooth the horizon discontinuity.

All of them shot with the Rokinon 24/1.4 on K-1 from the same location.

I was experimenting with cropping most of the photos to just above or
just below the horizon so that lightroom wouldn't get the stars right
but have an ugly step in the horizon. I was mostly able to get it to
work and cleaned things up with the clone tool. The horizon being a bit
blurry from the astrotracer sort of helped. At some point I'll need to
learn lightroom.

What I think that I need to do in the future is first off, quickly shoot
horizontal frames across the horizon to get a good clean set of photos
that include the horizon with minimal star motion. Then I need to shoot
my panorama set with each of the other frames either above, or below,
the horizon, so the horizon is in only one set of photos.

I should also probably work on getting a good set of perimeter shots,
particularly the vertical edges so that I have good frames for beyond
the whole area I want to shoot.

Here are my three favorites of my panos. Suggestions of how to improve
them and which one to print are much appreciated:

Junkos are generally not attractive birds. The females are just about solid
grey and they dig around on the ground for the seeds other birds drop. The
males are only a little bit better looking. All of them head north as soon
as the weather turns warm here. This guy is somewhat of an exception. He
has some nice feathers and he perched on a branch for me. He even caught a

They do appear brighter now. And it is better.

When I was looking on my laptop, - the photo still seems to me a bit dull.
I came home and looked on a big desktop screen, maximizing to the full
screen, - and it looked much better.

So, this is one of those photos where the way you look at it is critical.
(It still didn't become my favorite in this set, but I like it more now.)
I hope my suggestion was helpful.

One photo from this set keeps attracting my attention: the one with the

The panorama is done nicely, - but I've noticed an interesting effect:
you (I) spend time working on a panorama, enjoy the process, get the
result, and then people are not that much excited to look at it...

I guess, this is because panoramas are hard to see (they require
scrolling), and for the most part they are lacking a single "attention
focus" that people are used to in a photograph.
It is in a way similar to the difference between a novel (with its
multiple events are story lines happening in parallel) and a
short story or novella (with a compact and pointed plot).

BTW, I think there is a similar effect with a "3D" panoramas in museums:
it seems to me that many people do not spend time looking at the
multitude of the details and things happening in a complex panorama (or
a 3D model
worlds).
An exception might be when something is moving in those, attracting
attention, such as in the Hamburg's "Miniatur Wunderland":

(watch the video)
The coolest part, IMHO, is the airport:

(I haven't seen this place myself.)

But I digress...

The pinecones is an interesting photo, but it looks dark. It is not

Re: January best of

2018-02-07 Thread Igor PDML-StR

One photo from this set keeps attracting my attention: the one with the
S.C. hat.

The panorama is done nicely, - but I've noticed an interesting effect: you
(I) spend time working on a panorama, enjoy the process, get the result,
and then people are not that much excited to look at it...

BTW, I think there is a similar effect with a "3D" panoramas in museums:
it seems to me that many people do not spend time looking at the multitude
of the details and things happening in a complex panorama (or a 3D model

worlds).
An exception might be when something is moving in those, attracting
attention, such as in the Hamburg's "Miniatur Wunderland":

http://www.miniatur-wunderland.com/
(watch the video)
The coolest part, IMHO, is the airport:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9IlPDOar7E
(I haven't seen this place myself.)

But I digress...

The pinecones is an interesting photo, but it looks dark. It is not
necessarily the brightness. It's just that the complex details are not
popping out.

I don't know what should be done, - but I'd try to play with the
fill-in light (boosting up shadow areas), "vibrance", and "presence"
sliders in LR.

Cheers,

Igor

Yeah. Me to. Unfortunately, the life that's been happening here hasn't
provided any opportunities for me to get outside with a camera.

I find the fire disturbing because the fire was disturbing,  you silly
man...

and the bondange shots because I find bondage disturbing.
But neither of those, regardless of the content, do I feel should be in
your "BEST OF"
The fire, because , well, the fire is the story  - it would disturb no
matter who took a photo of it or how

skillful the work. (I don't mean the abstract one - I mean the first one).

And of course the reasson I love the bw dance thing is for the same
reasons that you took the photo..
- that shows off your talent at capturing the moment and your eye for
something apparently ordinary but

raised above it with perfect timing.  Hope Mark likes it :-)

If I were to get all pretentious and shit, I'd say that the point of
art is to make you feel, not necessarily to make you feel happy, but
that would involve the conceit that my photos qualify as art.

Both birdy shots are wonderful  - The stilt shot showing just how aptly
