The good news is that the focusing trouble might have just been my finger
blocking the manual focus ring at the end of the lens.

The bad news is that no good deed goes unpunished. On my ride a woman was
having trouble catching her dog, so I rode past where the dog was, parked my
bike, and it promptly fell over. The smart function knob on my K-3 III broke
off, and what remains no longer turns. About two months after the warranty
expired.

Sigh, I never used that feature anyways, it's not worth paying precision $537
to replace it.

That's a side effect of the detail that it costs a lot more to make something
so that it can be repaired, and even more to supoort a repair channel with
spare parts. So if they made things so that they can be repaired, they would
have to charge twice as much, and most people just look at the initial cost
when they buy something. That is exacerbated by the fact that with electronics
if something lasts five years, the new tech will cost half as much for twice
the performance.

If my 18-250 just needs an adjustment, by the time everything is set up and
torn down that's probably close to an hour of technician time, not to mention
shipping/receiving, and other paperwork, and to make money a business needs to
charge at least $200/hour for professional time. For $200 I could get a good
used newer generation of the same model at KEH.

they can't get service information for their late-model digital oscilloscopes,

The problem is you can't find anyone to repair the old stuff that *WAS* made to

KEH might repair it.  Erik Hendrickson(?) at Pentaxs.com might be able
to repair it, he was able to fix my Vivitar S1 70-210 v3, if all that's
wrong is something mechanical.  I think picking up a new used version
from KEH might be the most economical solution. There really seems to be
a conspiracy to get us to discard anything that's not "NEW".

Though I replaced the SDM motor on my DA* 50-135mm with, I believe, CRIS a

charm now.

Re: Lens repair?

2016-03-20 Thread Yolanda Rowe
Christine, I'd been hemming and hawing since 2012 regarding the
repair. Couldn't decide if I was going to live with it as a
screw-driven or manual lens. Well, it answered that question when it
simply refused to focus via any method.

I finally started the process January 31, but couldn't find a box the
right size (and kept forgetting to take the lens to a shipper). Maybe
the age of the paperwork sped up the repair. Who knows?

Re: Lens repair?

I think I remember that -- I sent my 50-135 in around the same
time it took foreve. Something about waiting for parts to
come in on the slow boat from Japan.

On the bright side, at least I haven't been relying on this lens for
the last 18 months or so, so I won't miss it as much.

is that a flat rate?
i have a 50-135 with signs of early SDM failure; i had plans to switch
it to screw drive but i am likely to sell it after using it for a bit,
and i have seen vague reports that deterioration of SDM mech can
eventually kill the screw drive

what is the wisdom of the list?

Though I replaced the SDM motor on my DA* 50-135mm with, I believe, CRIS a
while back, I think that was approximately what I paid. Lens running like a

Ugh. A little research into the repair of this lens has proved
discouraging... Purchased from KEH in May 2012, LN- condish, for $900.
(a good deal at the time, new versions going for close to $1200
retail, IIRC) . Now, KEH lists same lens, EX+ rating, selling for
less than half of that... and current price for new is... also about
half of what it used to be.

Selling, as-is, less repair costs... hardly seems worth it now.
Repair & keep is an option, but, it feels like throwing good money after bad...

Good news for anyone considering this lens -- the time to buy is now,
apparently.

Re: Lens repair?

2016-03-18 Thread Stanley Halpin
Christine, if it were me, here is what I would do:

a. If I had 2 or more items to send for repair, cleaning, whatever,
then I would have the 16-50 repaired and then you can sell it for a decent
price as newly-refurbished. Even after the cost of the repair you should
probably net more than if you tried to sell it “as-is”.
b. If the 16-50 is the only item for repair/cleaning, then I might try
the repair anyway. Just to see if the process works for you as it should work.
Again, you should net more when you eventually sell.
c. If you do decide to sell as-is, then be sure to offer (and include)
full detailed instructions on how the buyer can access repair services.
Preferably service(s) with which you have had personal experience…

Good luck!

Let us know how that works out.

If it's reasonably good news my Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70 will likely be
following it.

Any suggestions would be welcome, preferably within the continental

Frankly, my first thought is that this can't be that pricey or hard to
find of a lens and that replacement would be faster/cheaper (or at
least close to the same cost) but then I saw you said it was an "A"
lens. I think those may be a lot harder to find.

Re: Help request, who knows a lens repair service that will even look at older third party lenses?

2013-07-17 Thread P.J. Alling
The, relatively beat up cosmetically, copy that Boris found on Pentax
fora had an asking price of $200.00. Even having suffered a drop to a
concrete floor the version I have /looks/ like it's in better shape.
The entire problem seems to be that it struck the floor mount first, the
rear lens cap took most of the impact and shattered. However it seems to
have passed a little, maybe a lot, I can't tell, not sure how much a
little or lot would be in this case, of the impact force on to the
aperture stop down lever. The flange that protects the stop down lever
is made out of some kind of tough black plastic, and that's slightly
deformed. I'm hoping that nothing sheared off, that all that's wrong is
a metal part that can be carefully re-shaped.

Re: Help request, who knows a lens repair service that will even look at older third party lenses?

2013-07-14 Thread P.J. Alling
I did that when the Pentax F 70-210mm I was using jammed, the data
brush was mangled, and that part is made out of unobtanium. I paid
about $70, for the first one, and $150 for the replacement, last I
checked the a good condition Pentax F 70-210 is going for over $200.

This version of the Vivitar S1 70-210 with the A contacts was rare to
begin with and prices have been steadily rising over the last couple of
years. When I bought my first Vivitar S1 70-210, I picked up a LN- copy
of the second version in the original box for about $69.00 and passed on
a similar condition version 3 for the same money because I was shooting
LX and MX cameras had no particular interest in program operation so I
didn't need the A contacts, and I much preferred the fixed maximum
aperture over the variable aperture.

After going Digital, I decided that zoom and stop down metering was
causing me to miss to many shots, I searched for a version 3 and paid
almost three times as much just a few years later. I haven't seen one at
KEH since I bought the one I have now.

I may have to do that, but I'm hoping to have more options.

That's good to know! There's not many people out there that will fix
old lenses. I've been half tempted to get some tools together and
start repairing old lenses myself.
I have a few nice gems that need torn apart and cleaned something
awful, but really aren't worth the money to send out and have looked

C.R.I.S. is a camera repair service in Chandler, Arizona and they're
the official Pentax repair service now. Pentax USA outsourced the
service business to them a few years ago.

I sent the lens in a couple of weeks ago for the estimate. Given the
price, I'd guess no parts are required. But my goal was to get the
wonky zoom ring fixed *before* it broke completely and needed parts
that aren't available any more.

C.R.I.S. charged me $230.00 a year ago to replace the motor in my DA* 50-135.
Time was immaterial as I dropped it off on my two month trip around the west.
They shipped it to me once I returned. They did not have the camera, it was in

We could arrange for a loaner in that case, if you like;
mine hardly gets any use nowadays since I got the 60-250.

Sorry, but I'm not just going to mail my FA*80-200/2.8 to someone I
don't know who doesn't respond to phone calls or emails in the hope

It went out to C.R.I.S. this afternoon.

Re: Recommendations for lens repair?

2013-05-01 Thread Paul Stenquist
Yep. I have time now. I just got off the call.

The lens repair was quick. A couple of weeks at the most. One of the two flash
repairs was fast; the other took several weeks as they had to wait for a part.
I also had my K-5 in to fix the mirror motor problem. They were unable to get
parts for that after about four weeks. i had an important shot coming up, so I
hammered them a bit, and they talked Pentax into sending me a new camera. That
was excellent, since my K-5 was already at a shutter count of about 30,000.

I dug through my receipts and found the ticket for 60-250 lens repair. It was
$159 plus $15 shopping for a total of $174.00 The description says they
replaced the AF motor, adjusted the lens to manufacturers specs, and did a
general check and clean.

Recommendations for lens repair?

2013-04-29 Thread Mark Roberts
Anyone have a recommendation for someone to repair my FA*80-200/2.8?
It's not actually broken but the zoom ring is stiffer than it should
be and feels as if it's going to bind up sometimes. I'd like to get it
serviced before it actually breaks.

I've sent an email to the official US Pentax service center to see if
they'll work on this lens but I'd appreciate other recommendations,
too.

Feeler gauge is unnecessary.
If there is some grease holding it in place,
just pressing it down with your finger while
sliding the aperture ring over it is adequate.

Ah, I see.

This is clearly a task best left to people who know what they're doing.

Or you could send them to Cotty.

I suppose I could do that, but I kind of like Cotty and would hate for him to
see what I did to that poor lens.

Do you have any idea how incredibly markworthy the above statement is?

Oh, pshaw!

Cotty modifies poor innocent Pentax lenses to unnaturally mate with
Canon cameras. Nothing you've done could match his depravity.

I don't think you ought to be too put off by the comments here. Yes,
the ball bearing thing makes it all a bit fiddly, but what it
requires to get it right falls more in the category of "patience"
than "knowing what you are doing"... Oh, and holding the thing
over/inside a tray of some sort is excellent advice. I believe I used
a rectangular ice cream box (after eating the ice ;-)) on once instance.

Thanks, Toralf!

Now that you mention it, I figure I have nothing to lose by taking
apart the completely useless lens first and, if it looks like it's
going to be too much trouble based on what I see, all I will have lost
is a completely useless lens.

Exactly ;-)

BTW, I haven't used tools or anything when re-attaching that ball
bearing thing - I've just inserted the spring, balanced the ball on top
of it, then used the actual aperture ring, held at a slight angle, to
catch and secure it, then sort of a twisted the ring itself into the
right position. If you know what I mean...

I'll just leave it be and use it as an M lens until I find that

You must compress the spring so the ball bearing is low enough to

Now imagine trying to keep the ball bearing "down" as you slide the
ring one. As you slide the ring, whatever you were holding the
bearing

down with is in the way. You need something stiff and THIN that will
be strong enough to hold the bearing in, and yet thin enough that you
can pull it out from between the aperture ring and the lens when the
ring is *in place*.

Haven't figured out what that stiff thin thing is yet and I have a
couple of repaired lenses patiently waiting in baggies for me to
figure it out.
