The good news is that the focusing trouble might have just been my finger blocking the manual focus ring at the end of the lens. The bad news is that no good deed goes unpunished. On my ride a woman was having trouble catching her dog, so I rode past where the dog was, parked my bike, and it promptly fell over. The smart function knob on my K-3 III broke off, and what remains no longer turns. About two months after the warranty expired. Sigh, I never used that feature anyways, it's not worth paying precision $537 to replace it. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com. sent from Mirkwood -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

That's a side effect of the detail that it costs a lot more to make something so that it can be repaired, and even more to supoort a repair channel with spare parts. So if they made things so that they can be repaired, they would have to charge twice as much, and most people just look at the initial cost when they buy something. That is exacerbated by the fact that with electronics if something lasts five years, the new tech will cost half as much for twice the performance. If my 18-250 just needs an adjustment, by the time everything is set up and torn down that's probably close to an hour of technician time, not to mention shipping/receiving, and other paperwork, and to make money a business needs to charge at least $200/hour for professional time. For $200 I could get a good used newer generation of the same model at KEH. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: lens repair
KEH might repair it. Erik Hendrickson(?) at Pentaxs.com might be able to repair it, he was able to fix my Vivitar S1 70-210 v3, if all that's wrong is something mechanical. Re: Lens repair?
Christine, I'd been hemming and hawing since 2012 regarding the repair. Couldn't decide if I was going to live with it as a screw-driven or manual lens. Well, it answered that question when it simply refused to focus via any method. I finally started the process January 31, but couldn't find a box the right size (and kept forgetting to take the lens to a shipper). Maybe the age of the paperwork sped up the repair. Who knows? Some places can't repair it because special tools are required. CRIS sent mine to Japan. Two months passed , I complained and Pentax replaced it with a new one. Re: Lens repair?
I think I remember that -- I sent my 50-135 in around the same time it took foreve. Something about waiting for parts to come in on the slow boat from Japan. On the bright side, at least I haven't been relying on this lens for the last 18 months or so, so I won't miss it as much. Ugh. A little research into the repair of this lens has proved discouraging... Purchased from KEH in May 2012, LN- condish, for $900. Re: Lens repair?
Christine, if it were me, here is what I would do: a. If I had 2 or more items to send for repair, cleaning, whatever, then I would have the 16-50 repaired and then you can sell it for a decent price as newly-refurbished. Even after the cost of the repair you should probably net more than if you tried to sell it “as-is”. b. If the 16-50 is the only item for repair/cleaning, then I might try the repair anyway. Just to see if the process works for you as it should work. Again, you should net more when you eventually sell. c. If you do decide to sell as-is, then be sure to offer (and include) full detailed instructions on how the buyer can access repair services. Preferably service(s) with which you have had personal experience… Good luck! stan > On Mar 17, 2016, at 11:40 AM, Christine Nielsen wrote: > > Ugh. Pentax' current repair contract is with Precision Camera Repair, home based in Enfield CT. They have a location in Texas as well. Re: K-mount Third Party Lens Repair
That's Eric Hendrickson his web site is http://pentaxs.com/id3.html. He's repaired a number of my Lenses including the FA 43mm limited and the Vivitar 70-210mm f2.8~4.0. However you should contact him first and ask if he thinks he can effect the repair, He may lack the parts or the repair manual. He would only do as little as necessary to get the the Vivitar working. There was a discussion here a few months back about where to get a third party K-mount lens repaired. I remember there was someone in Tennessee recommended who would accept third Party K-mount lenses for repair. Re: Help request, who knows a lens repair service that will even look at older third party lenses?
The, relatively beat up cosmetically, copy that Boris found on Pentax fora had an asking price of $200.00. Even having suffered a drop to a concrete floor the version I have /looks/ like it's in better shape. The entire problem seems to be that it struck the floor mount first, the rear lens cap took most of the impact and shattered. However it seems to have passed a little, maybe a lot, I can't tell, not sure how much a little or lot would be in this case, of the impact force on to the aperture stop down lever. The flange that protects the stop down lever is made out of some kind of tough black plastic, and that's slightly deformed. I'm hoping that nothing sheared off, that all that's wrong is a metal part that can be carefully re-shaped. I'd like to thank every one who replied, and especially whoever suggested sending it to Erik Hendricson, I'd dealt with him before, but discounted using him since the equipment wasn't made by Pentax. Re: Help request, who knows a lens repair service that will even look at older third party lenses?
I did that when the Pentax F 70-210mm I was using jammed, the data brush was mangled, and that part is made out of unobtanium. I paid about $70, for the first one, and $150 for the replacement, last I checked the a good condition Pentax F 70-210 is going for over $200. This version of the Vivitar S1 70-210 with the A contacts was rare to begin with and prices have been steadily rising over the last couple of years. When I bought my first Vivitar S1 70-210, I picked up a LN- copy of the second version in the original box for about $69.00 and passed on a similar condition version 3 for the same money because I was shooting LX and MX cameras had no particular interest in program operation so I didn't need the A contacts, and I much preferred the fixed maximum aperture over the variable aperture. After going Digital, I decided that zoom and stop down metering was causing me to miss to many shots, I searched for a version 3 and paid almost three times as much just a few years later. I haven't seen one at KEH since I bought the one I have now. I may have to do that, but I'm hoping to have more options. Re: Help request, who knows a lens repair service that will even look at older third party lenses?
That's good to know! There's not many people out there that will fix old lenses. I've been half tempted to get some tools together and start repairing old lenses myself. I have a few nice gems that need torn apart and cleaned something awful, but really aren't worth the money to send out and have looked at. On Sun, Jul 14, 2013 at 1:24 PM, James King wrote: > P.J. My Vivitar S1 70-210mm f2.8~4.0, the third version with the A contacts took a fall of about 2 1/2 feet to a concrete floor. Everything seems to be all right except the aperture lever is binding just ever so much which is keeping it from stopping down normally. I took it apart, as much as I felt comfortable doing, while still thinking I'd get it back together, and was unable to discover where the lever is binding, though it's just enough to keep it from moving freely through part of it's travel. Even at that I managed to lose one small screw. Any new Pentax equipment I'd send to C.R.I.S. Older stuff I'd send to Pentaxs.com, but I've never damaged an older non Pentax lens I thought was worth having repaired, so I'm at a loss. Any suggestions would be welcome, preferably within the continental U.S., but Canada probably isn't out of the question. Though I'm not sure what kind of hoops I'll have to jump through to get a used lens for repair through customs. -- There are two kinds of computer users those who've experienced a hard drive failure, and those that will. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Recommendations for lens repair?
Yep. I have time now. I just got off the call. The lens repair was quick. A couple of weeks at the most. One of the two flash repairs was fast; the other took several weeks as they had to wait for a part. I also had my K-5 in to fix the mirror motor problem. They were unable to get parts for that after about four weeks. i had an important shot coming up, so I hammered them a bit, and they talked Pentax into sending me a new camera. That was excellent, since my K-5 was already at a shutter count of about 30,000. I dug through my receipts and found the ticket for 60-250 lens repair. It was $159 plus $15 shopping for a total of $174.00 The description says they replaced the AF motor, adjusted the lens to manufacturers specs, and did a general check and clean. Recommendations for lens repair?
Anyone have a recommendation for someone to repair my FA*80-200/2.8? It's not actually broken but the zoom ring is stiffer than it should be and feels as if it's going to bind up sometimes. I'd like to get it serviced before it actually breaks. I've sent an email to the official US Pentax service center to see if they'll work on this lens but I'd appreciate other recommendations, too. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Lens repair question
Feeler gauge is unnecessary. If there is some grease holding it in place, just pressing it down with your finger while sliding the aperture ring over it is adequate. Exactly ;-) BTW, I haven't used tools or anything when re-attaching that ball bearing thing - I've just inserted the spring, balanced the ball on top of it, then used the actual aperture ring, held at a slight angle, to catch and secure it, then sort of a twisted the ring itself into the right position.
