Photokina!
With Photokina and PMA coming up Jan 10 and Feb 26 is it a good idea to wait on purchasing the ist ds2 until the shows to see what Pentax has up its sleeve? Any ideas as to what our favorite camera company might introduce? DG

Photokina?
The last couple of Photokinas we have had a few members of PDML on hand and giving reports to us, they even talked with the Pentax reps, I believe. There has been such a lack of information on the list about Photokina this year am I to assume we had no one on hand? Oh well, might as well hope for something at PMA in March. The PMA 2003 website is up and running. DG
Re: Photokina!
For what it's worth, it depends on weather you can wait that long. I'm betting that Pentax won't have any sleeves this year let alone anything up them, unless of course it's a Silver DS2. dick graham wrote: With Photokina and PMA coming up Jan 10 and Feb 26 is it a good idea to wait on purchasing the ist ds2 until the shows to see what Pentax has up its sleeve? I brought the subject of new dslr intro's up because of the very recent dslr partnership between Pentax and Samsung. Re: Photokina!
PMA will be too soon for seeing anything different from a Samsung rebadged Pentax (probably a DS2 or DL) and maybe a Pentax DL2 or DS3 (just a DL or DS2 with Samsung components inside). That was more or less stated on occasion of Pentax-Samsung agreement, hence it is not necessary classified info to expect that. Anything more than that is pure speculation and hope, IMHO. Photokina will be next September, probably not too soon to see true results from Pentax-Samsung partnership. And then my own opinions about mid & top class bodies (wild guess): I expect to see the faster 50-210 (or the like) D-FA lens at PMA. I also expect some updated news about the 645D at PMA, but not yet the real thing. I don't expect to see a Super D at PMA, as it will need some more time for sure. Or maybe we'll just see a mockup or three ;-) Dario - Original Message - From: "dick graham" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2005 6:51 PM Subject: Re: Photokina! We can be certain of a couple of things: Neither Pentax nor Samsung rushed into their business arrangement. And Samsung must have had a sensor and perhaps some other technology almost ready to go when they started inquiring about a partnership. Samsung is big leagues and they're accustomed to very short design-to-production cycles. It wouldn't surprise me if we saw nothing at all at PMA in February and then had working prototypes at Photokina in September. -- Mark Roberts Photography and writing www.robertstech.com

Probably the same or just a few less, Pentax don't compress the RAW files plus in all their wisdom they pad the 12 bits per pixel to 16 bits. Photokina Possibilities?
I've waited this long for the K20D, I'm just going to wait 'til Sept's Photokina news is in the air. May wind up skipping the K20D(?) I won't be able to horse around even a fair size "loaded" tripod for some time yet. Rotator cuff repair physical therapy has just begun and all it does is stir up the agony for another lousy night. Can't raise a camera to my eye without hearing my therapist yell at me. (it is VERY uncomfortable to do so). Fall photo drive has been called off and I'm now enjoying photography vicariously through the "list". Complete healing estimated at 6 months. I will have lost all my golf callouses by then. Photokina observations...
1/ pentax gave some cool bags 2/ there were some pretty nice girls there ;) 3/ the Fuji x100 is Very Very nice specially it's hybrid viewfinder, Imo it will sell well (considering it's niche). 4/ K5 AF is indeed more nervous, how much better af-c s hard to tell though 5/ 18-135 is nice, large but short. Felt way better constructed than other DA WR zooms. 6/ once setup correctly, the k5 did NOT do DFS after about 3 minutes Bulb pose. 7/ 12800 iso quite useable with a pinch of Lr3 NR. 51200 is salvage only obviously. 8/ no memory cards were allowed in camera :( 9/ nothing new on video controls 10/ mirror lock up just as in K7 11/ buffer (bummer) very short indeed due to 14bit raw but they may change that or add a 12bit mode. 12/ the 645d is Heck I WANT one :) and very nervous AF IMO. 13/ Pentax still have the biggest bags :) I may remember more after a bit of a sleep. -- Thibault Massart aka Thibouille/Thibs -- Photo: K-7, Sigma 28/1.8 macro, FA50/1.4, DA40Ltd, K30/2.8, DA16-45, DA50-135, DA50-200, 360FGZ ... Pentax is DEAD! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Long live the PENTAX! Life goes on. I still like my kit. I know that I won't replace it with anything that doesn't afford me at least the same options and cost significantly less than what's currently the case. Fortunately, my client is me. I can pursue what's important to me and use any means I damn well like. Most pros are driven to provide what their clients expect. My sympathies to them. Somewhere down the line, I may get the equivalent of a Canon G2 (or whatever the future equivalent will be, maybe even a Pentax), but it would be to replace my Yashica point and shoot, not my Pentax kit: ZX-5n, FG grip, Autobellows A, Refconverter M, AF500 FTZ, FA 24mm f:2, FA 35mm f:2, A 50mm f:1.7, A 50mm f:2, FA 77mm f:1.8, FA 100mm f:2.8, M 135mm f:3.5 . I actually like all this stuff and get great pleasure using it whenever I can. I intend to keep doing so for awhile yet. Peace Dan Scott

The last Photokina speculation thread on PDML before Photokina
For the purposes of discussion, let's assume that the Russian Pentax tweet about "nine" press release announcements coming in the next few days/weeks are going to cover Pentax (and Ricoh's) combined product announcements prior to unveiling them at Photokina. I think the 560mm telephoto and the 24MP APS-C K-3 are in the "for sure" category. That leaves us with 7 more announcements (and they could be for anything from flash to accessory to lens to camera). If I were placing odds I would put them in the following order (from most likely to least likely) The Pentax K to Q adapter shown at CPP+ A new flash unit Pentax 645Dii The "DA High Magnification Zoom lens" on the roadmap for 2012 (this language sounds a lot like the lens on the X-5 bridge camera, only to cover an APS-C image circle, so I'm guessing a 16-250mm superzoom) A fast wide lens for the Q... a 5mm f1.8 would be perfect. A K-mount module for the Ricoh GXR (sells more lenses to another installed base)* A K-z entry level (I have my doubts about this even happening... I think Pentax is abandoning the low-entry DSLR arena, but I think that would be a mistake) *does this count as a Pentax announcement? Is the Pentax booth combined with Ricoh at Photokina this year? I think the one thing that Pentax may do that will surprise some people is to make more cameras with/without the anti-aliasing filter (ala Nikon D800/D800E) giving people the choice of which they want. The Pentax Q has no anti-alias filter, which is part of the reason that it out-performs people's expectations. I think we are seeing a trend away from anti-alias filters being used and the moire Bogeyman being relegated to the dust bin. So, those are my 7, but I'll add a wildcard. I'm sure that at least ONE of my 7 is incorrect (probably a lot more than one). So to replace one, I think that Pentax is going to finally *announce* that they are working on a FF camera, but that it won't ship until next year. I think that if they are working on one then they almost have to announce that it is coming to freeze their constituency (or at least MORE of them) from jumping ship. But I don't think they will even show a prototype because they will have enough "real" products to show and they wouldn't want the FF to steal those products thunder. Comments? Your conjecture? Re: Photokina 2010
Hi Thibouille, As usual, I'm going to attend it most of the time. I'll be there as a journalist with a busy agenda of press conferences and people to meet and then working at night at the hotel. This said, set-up a PDML meeting and I'll try hard to show up. A copy of the K-5 owners and technical manuals, plus a transcript of an in depth, off the recored, personal interview with the highest ranking Hoya and Pentax employees in attendance, please. Re: Photokina observations...
I hadn't heard "nervous" applied to AF before but I know exactly what you mean. The K7 is good but get's like that sometimes. I also suspect the 645D's sensor and price point will make up for many "peculiarities" that would be considered flaws in other cameras. Re: Photokina observations...
My overall feeling is the Pentax is stalled in R&D. There have been rumors of a full-sized sensor Pentax, which would be wonderful for us who have Pentax lenses designed for film (that would be ALL of my Pentax lenses except for the 40mm pancake). There is little that would entice me to move from the K-x with 43/1.9 to something else. The combination is lightweight and fast and comfortable in my hand. Maybe next year.
