I don't know what the exact numbers are, but the K7 isn't a lot lighter

rather hefty. I prefer a heavier camera. It makes for a steadier grip and
balances substantial lenses better. The DA* 60-250 and the K7 with battery

I'll second that. I originally got one for my bag, which tends to be a

I've used a Tamrac strap for nearly two years. No complaints so far.
It has two nice pockets for extra cards, and it's easy to take off.
IMO thats very handy when mouting the camera at a tripod, gets the
strap out of the way.
Bought it for about 15$ at BH. But there might be better straps out

This one comes from the happy medium department.

I thought the istD was a tad to small and the K10D about right for my
hands. I;m not partial to a smaller unit, if thaqts what Pentax has up
there extension tubes.:-)

I like the feel of the bulkier bodies, the PZ-1 the K10D. The Nikons I
have all fit nicely in my hands.

Oh and don';t move the shutter release button from its current
location. One reason i did not buy Canon digital at first was the
location of the button was troublesome.

Come on everyone, this is a Pentax mailing list!

APERTURE SIMULATORS!

Only worth discussing if it's on the new upcoming Full Frame camera.
(Damn I still want an MZ-D).

Was that to be full frame? I know it was to use the Foveon (sp?) chip.

Full frame, yes; Foveon, no.

agree, but lately the kit feels so heavy--course so does by body.
Maybe I'm

I don't know what the exact numbers are, but the K7 isn't a lot
lighter
than the K20. Somewhat smaller, but it's packed and well built, so
it's
rather hefty. I prefer a heavier camera. It makes for a steadier
grip and
balances substantial lenses better. The DA* 60-250 and the K7 with
battery

pack are a perfect match.

Check the EXIF information for one of the blown-out images.
In fact check the metadata for *all* of them, and see if
the problems only occur with one particular lens. If that
is the case the problem may well be with the lens, not the
camera body. The lens may have sticky aperture blades,
and not be stopping down fast enough.

Intuitive is only another way of saying what you are used to.

If you think Av mode is done by moving the aperture ring on the lens,
then you're going to have a problem switching rapidly between Av and Tv
(or program) which is what Hyper Program mode offers. It depends on
what you want; if you want a camera body that works just like a K-1000
with all your old manual focus lenses the MZ/ZX bodies are great, but
personally I found the advantages of the new Hyper modes far outweighed
that.

I understand what you are saying but I do not agree. Up until the
*istD (for me) the controls of each new generation of camera tended
to build on the previous one, so learning a new camera was easy. The
*istD's controls were quite a departure from the MZ-S and so meant
that I had to spend extra time reading the owner's manual when I
would have preferred to be out photographing.

I just find having the shutter speed aperture controls in the right

the aperture was on the front wheel and shutter speed was on the rear.
But it allows me to control the camera without having to take my eye

I'll have to check the manual and see if that's something that can be

Intuitive is only another way of saying what you are used to.

Exactly.

The MZ-S control layout doesn't build on the preceding Z/PZ series.

Nor from the P or the SF series, although there does seem to be a
logical progression from P to SF to Z/PZ to *ist-D and on through KxD
into the new K series .

MZ *ist (film) seem to make some kind of detour, as do the K-m and K-x.

The *ist-D control layout does follow from the PZ-1/PZ-1p. It has the
same control layout for Hyper-Program; front wheel controls shutter
speed, rear wheel controls aperture.

Speaking of K-x, did I post that I ran across the K-x IN STOCK at the
CompUSA/Tiger Direct Outlet Store in Raleigh? I meant to.

But that really belongs in whatever thread kvetching about Pentax having
shed all their local dealers belongs.

I owned (and still do) a ZX-5N. When I got the MZ-S I found the
control layout easy to understand, though I missed the shutter speed
knob. But the dial for exposure compensation and auto-bracketing was
clearly an evolution from the ZX-5N. A quick twist of the aperture
ring takes either camera from programme into aperture priority.

I guess it all comes down to what you like and what you don't
like...what you are used to and what you are not used to.

It's taken me three years, but I've finally figured out what those
little twirly wheels on the *istD do and now I like them. My
complaint with them is that both aperture and shutter speed are
controlled with the right hand, leaving the left with nothing to do
but hold the lens, if it's a prime. Its job used to be to twist the
aperture ring. I worry that it might find something else to twist and
get me into trouble.

I guess the solution is to only use zooms.

Now you understand :-)

By the time I got my MZ-S my main lens was the 80-200/2.8, and if I wasn't
using that I was using either the 300/2.8 or the 250-600. The primary
task for my left hand was to steady the lens on the monopod, and maybe
to tweak the zoom slightly. But generally my hand was at or near the
front element or lens hood, not all the way back near the camera body.

If you mainly use (short-ish) primes, your left hand may well be free to
adjust the aperture, although you also need that hand if you're not using
auto-focus. Nowadays, of course, there's quick-shift focus touch up as well.

I don't know what the exact numbers are, but the K7 isn't a lot lighter than

substantial lenses better. The DA* 60-250 and the K7 with battery pack are a

I've used a Tamrac strap for nearly two years. No complaints so far.
It has two nice pockets for extra cards, and it's easy to take off.
IMO thats very handy when mouting the camera at a tripod, gets the
strap out of the way.
Bought it for about 15$ at BH. But there might be better straps out there.

I still disbelieve the reality of a 645D and question the

Well, it's summer doldrums down here but I get your point

I think that DSLR development has reached the point where incremental
gains in performance are relatively small, so upgrading becomes a matter
of trying to justify the expense when the current camera is 'good
enough'.

I my case, the K200D does pretty much everything I want, so I probably

I'm ready for an upgrade from my *istD. It's a nice camera but my
response to it has always been lukewarm at best. I've had it three
years and it only has ~3200 actuations on it. I'm waiting to see what
the Boxing Day sales offer...hopefully an K-7D or a K20D at a good

Re: Does anybody miss the new equipment discussions?

2009-12-16 Thread Bob Sullivan
Pentax has introduced too many new cameras for us to complain. No
wait, this group can always complain! The US is running a special
price on the K-7 with WP kit lens, $150 below K-7 price alone and
offering $100 off on each lens purchased at the same time. If the
K-20 didn't have a 3 year damage warranty on it, I might have gone for
a 2nd K-7 and a DA16-45/2.8 or DA200/2.8. And I had to sell my K10D
because I couldn't justify keeping 2 generations back.
Maybe Pentax has a new paradigm. Sell the family new cameras to use
their old lenses! Before the *ist DS, my lens collection was big but
my new camera purchases were an initial ME, Super Program, and PZ-1.
Since buying the *ist DS, I've fell for the K10D, K20D, and K7D.
That's some $3500+ in the last 3-4 years vs under $900 in the first
20+ years.
Regards, Bob S.

2009-12-16 Thread Rick Womer
Well, I've been thinkin'...

I was really attracted to the K7 because of its smaller size, faster
performance, more accurate metering, and artificial horizon.

However... I am really happy with my K10D, whose RAW low-light performance is
actually a bit better (see dxomark.com), whose AF is adequate to my needs,
whose quirky metering I understand, which has just under 20K exposures on the
clock, and which is =not= the weak link in my photography (the wetware is).

Besides, I'm a cheapskate.

So, I'm currently planning to sit back and wait to see what comes after the K7.
Unless, of course, I impusively change my mind.

long. My K10 is up to 11 or 12,000 cycles, and it's doing pretty well.
The only real problem I have with it operationally is the goofy flash

Months? Try years.

I've lived this long without the furnace and central air, I can forgo
them a bit longer.

I will have to do the roof next summer, but I should still be able to

I might be looking for a good used K20D some time in the new year. I
