This one comes from the happy medium department. I thought the istD was a tad to small and the K10D about right for my hands. I;m not partial to a smaller unit, if thaqts what Pentax has up there extension tubes.:-) I like the feel of the bulkier bodies, the PZ-1 the K10D. The Nikons I have all fit nicely in my hands. Oh and don';t move the shutter release button from its current location. One reason i did not buy Canon digital at first was the location of the button was troublesome. Really? My K10D does not impress me one bit. It has serious White out issues. It seems to take most of it's pictures so white they are useless. Now the funny thing is, I won't buy a new one because I'm determined to figure out what is wrong with this one. (or maybe it is the lack of a job) Actually I'm wondering if maybe I have an issue with it reading one of my lenses. I've had the lens for awhile now. I'm at less than both of you on my K10D. Check the EXIF information for one of the blown-out images. In fact check the metadata for *all* of them, and see if the problems only occur with one particular lens. If that is the case the problem may well be with the lens, not the camera body. The lens may have sticky aperture blades, and not be stopping down fast enough. MZ *ist (film) seem to make some kind of detour, as do the K-m and K-x. I owned (and still do) a ZX-5N. When I got the MZ-S I found the control layout easy to understand, though I missed the shutter speed knob. But the dial for exposure compensation and auto-bracketing was clearly an evolution from the ZX-5N. A quick twist of the aperture ring takes either camera from programme into aperture priority. I guess it all comes down to what you like and what you don't like...what you are used to and what you are not used to. It's taken me three years, but I've finally figured out what those little twirly wheels on the *istD do and now I like them. My complaint with them is that both aperture and shutter speed are controlled with the right hand, leaving the left with nothing to do but hold the lens, if it's a prime. Its job used to be to twist the aperture ring. I worry that it might find something else to twist and get me into trouble. I guess the solution is to only use zooms. The *ist-D control layout does follow from the PZ-1/PZ-1p. It has the same control layout for Hyper-Program; front wheel controls shutter speed, rear wheel controls aperture. Now you understand :-) By the time I got my MZ-S my main lens was the 80-200/2.8, and if I wasn't using that I was using either the 300/2.8 or the 250-600. The primary task for my left hand was to steady the lens on the monopod, and maybe to tweak the zoom slightly. But generally my hand was at or near the front element or lens hood, not all the way back near the camera body. If you mainly use (short-ish) primes, your left hand may well be free to adjust the aperture, although you also need that hand if you're not using auto-focus. I don't know what the exact numbers are, but the K7 isn't a lot lighter than the K20. Somewhat smaller, but it's packed and well built, so it's rather hefty. I prefer a heavier camera. I've used a Tamrac strap for nearly two years. No complaints so far. It has two nice pockets for extra cards, and it's easy to take off. IMO thats very handy when mouting the camera at a tripod, gets the strap out of the way. Bought it for about 15$ at BH. But there might be better straps out there. -- MaritimTim http://maritimtim.blogspot.com/ 2009/12/18 Christine Aguila cagu...@earthlink.net: No, can you recommend one, Tim? Thanks for the tip! Re: Does anybody miss the new equipment discussions?
Pentax has introduced too many new cameras for us to complain. No wait, this group can always complain! The US is running a special price on the K-7 with WP kit lens, $150 below K-7 price alone and offering $100 off on each lens purchased at the same time. If the K-20 didn't have a 3 year damage warranty on it, I might have gone for a 2nd K-7 and a DA16-45/2.8 or DA200/2.8. And I had to sell my K10D because I couldn't justify keeping 2 generations back. Maybe Pentax has a new paradigm. Sell the family new cameras to use their old lenses! Before the *ist DS, my lens collection was big but my new camera purchases were an initial ME, Super Program, and PZ-1. Since buying the *ist DS, I've fell for the K10D, K20D, and K7D. That's some $3500+ in the last 3-4 years vs under $900 in the first 20+ years. Regards, Bob S. Well, I've been thinkin'... I was really attracted to the K7 because of its smaller size, faster performance, more accurate metering, and artificial horizon. However... I am really happy with my K10D, whose RAW low-light performance is actually a bit better (see dxomark.com), whose AF is adequate to my needs, whose quirky metering I understand, which has just under 20K exposures on the clock, and which is =not= the weak link in my photography (the wetware is). I will have to do the roof next summer, but I should still be able to get up there myself, which should minimize the cost. Probably slap a coat of paint on too, just to keep the neighbors from complaining. Don't really care what they think, just don't want to have to deal with the whining. I might be looking for a good used K20D some time in the new year. I can't justify a K7 as much as I want one. I've got other things coming up, and there's opportunities I don't want to miss. The repairs will still be waiting when I get back. It's not like I'm ever going to sell this house. And after I'm dead the damn thing can fall down for all I care. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Does anybody miss the new equipment discussions?
Peter, I reckon that gear discussions for sake of gear discussions are silly. However, if there is a particular point or question - I'd gladly join the talk should I think I might contribute information. By the way, sir, I've sent you a message of list some time ago and you did not seem to reply ;-). Boris On 12/16/2009 10:15 PM, P. J. Ok, I know that DPreview, Pentax Forums and others have such discussion but they're just silly... I for one miss those halcyon days of just a few months ago. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I thought the same with my K20 then I touched the K7 heard the shutter--ahhh, that was lovely to the ears. I do want the K7, so I'm *sort of* saving for it--but mainly for the weight--I'm so tired of the weight--my own--and camera gear weight; these days I'm traveling really light, and it's still heavy. I guess I'm a wimp. A few nights ago I dreamt of my old MX, and I moved around free and easy in that dream. :-) Cheers, Christine - Original Message - From: gldnbearz gldnbearz.p...@gmail.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2009 4:13 PM Subject: Re: Does anybody miss the new equipment discussions? I my case, the K200D does pretty much everything I want, so I probably wont upgrade until a camera comes along with similar features but with a better high ISO performance and a sensor with a few more MP of resolution.
