I like their sound a lot, it is crisp, clean, precisely modulated but not to the point of being unforgiving. They are a nice contrast to my Consequence Audio Olivia / Images loudspeakers (D'Appolito design, SEAS chassis) which are built completely with classical and jazz in mind and sound warmer and more vibrant. To be honest, I've thus far ignored the technology of the headphones. I traded an old Kenwood KT-880 tuner for them when the content qualitative decline of my preferred radio stations really took hold and my BeyerDynamic headphones began to disintegrate (the softener in the earshells turned them into crackly, sticky goo plus the left ear cable had cracked. I listen to more radio again now but it is different styles of music these days. Around here you get two half decent jazz stations, one informed classical, one multicultural/alternative and all the rest is either news or heavy rotation elevator / charts pop / oldie but gooey / whatnot. In fact the leading local pop station Radio Hamburg calls a listener panel with every prospective new track (nothing that's never been Top 10 either), they never replace more than 30 and never play more than 180 tracks in any given month. And their jingle is "More diverstiy" - can you believe that? Re: GESO: My headphone stand
Last year I almost got the HD 650 (don't want to pay more) and narrowed my specs for the amp to a cMOY design. Didn't had the opportunity to actually check this out by listening so I never ordered the gear. For fun I got a FiiO amp which isn't bad for $20. You mentioned the HD 650 and now I'm back to dreaming... I can't make up my mind regarding the amp. I really do not want to break these phones. They cost a king's ransom and I was only able to afford them because a stuff-up at my employer caused me to be underpaid for a few months after I started working more hours. Even then I took a while to make up my mind. Pretty much my entire back-pay went on them. If it wasn't for that I would have probably "settled" for a Sennheiser HD650. A nice fellow from a local hi-fi forum had both of these models and allowed me to borrow each for about a week. I really seriously liked the Sennheiser but I ~loved~ the Grado. They do take a while to break-in though. Out of the box they sound very harsh. I don't think they're quite there yet but they're a lot better than they were when new.
