It looks fine on mine. Shot at 8:35am on the W bank of the dam on a
overcast morning with lens at full stretch. Don't see any
yellowish/greenish (apart from the background which is sharply in
contrast to the Stork).

That's a nice shot, but on my screen the color balance seems wonky. Did you
shoot it at sunset? It looks very yellowish, maybe even a bit greenish as well.

The thing that strikes me most about Russian is the incredible amount of

I had a hearty laugh when I found out that my Russian weather fax

And it's not only Russian. The Croats have the wonderful word

I did about 3 months of study at beginner level. I was about twenty years old
at the time so by the time we met I had forgotten almost everything - I would
have embarrassed myself if I’d tried to say anything.

I learned it because I was working at the British Library and they needed
people to work in the Russian scientific and technical section so they trawled
their records for linguistics and found me. I was happy to do it because my
girlfriend was half Russian (half Georgian to be precise), but they didn’t want
to teach us much beyond the basics, and I left fairly soon anyway.

Re: Happy New Year

2021-01-06 Thread Boris Liberman
Well, Bob.

Russian has no articles. Hebrew has the equivalent of the article 'the'
only. English - you know better than me :-).

Just point in case. The above sentence about Hebrew was originally "Hebrew
has equivalent of article 'the'". Google told me that I was missing two
"the"s...

My reasoning behind not putting them was that I wasn't referring to
anything from the previous text and it is kind of obvious what's the
subject, so I thought - article isn't needed. As usual - I was quite wrong.
Twice wrong in fact and these two wrongs don't make for one right.

I am glad I know three very different languages. I wish I knew Hebrew
better but it so happened that I can't write and my reading is very slow. I
did not read any books in Hebrew, so my spoken language is rather simple
too. Hopefully I could say "yet", though I am not planning on any such
activity in the immediate future. Of course "know" is flexible, because I
still cannot write a screenful of English text without missing a bunch of
articles, but it's the journey that matters, not the destination, right?

Beside learning Russian alphabet - did you go further? When we met, 15
years ago, I don't recall you trying to say anything in Russian. Not in our
presence, at least.

Latin is an inflected language - I learned that from age 11 to 18. Functionally
English achieves the same thing with word order and prepositions.

I mentioned before that I’ve recently started to learn modern Greek, which is
also inflected, though less so than Ancient Greek and Latin. I’m very glad that
I learned an inflected language when I was quite young, and also a different
alphabet (Russian) when I was about twenty as I think it must be exceptionally
difficult for an adult English speaker to learn something like Greek or Russian
as their first foreign language as you have so many new concepts to learn
before you can really get on with learning the language itself.

Greek uses its articles more than English does...!

Actually, it is more like Danish, mixed with a bit of Norman French.
Arguably, the first great masterpiece of English literature is Beowulf,
which takes place in Denmark with places and persons familiar to most
English of the time.
Again, arguably, the greatest work in the English Language is Hamlet, once
again taking place entirely in Denmark, with Danish places and persons
familiar to contemporaneous English residents.

Re: Happy New Year

2021-01-01 Thread Boris Liberman
Daniel, I noticed the letter "ӱ" which is not part of the Russian alphabet
(due to two dots above the letter). So I realized it wasn't Russian, but
rather some other Slavic language.

I will now go on to wikipedia and look it up. It stands to reason that
there are many words between our languages that can be mutually understood.
I can understand some Bulgarian, Polish, Croatian...
Sometimes it is easier when it is written - I may need time to do the
mental processing necessary to recall respective Russian words.

My favorite podcast at the moment is "The History of English Language" (
https://historyofenglishpodcast.com/episodes/). I'm presently at about
episode 51. This is extremely interesting.

And it is great fun to get new year greetings in all the languages that
this list spans!

Всех благ!

We are a tiny and obscure ethnic group, now living mostly in Eastern
Slovakia and Western Ukraine (and the US). We are known more for good
looks than brains: Sandra Dee, Robert Urich, Tom Sellick, and Andy Warhol
(Andrei Warhola), and rugged hockey players, like Peter Bondra and Walt
Tkaczuk). Michael Strank was the leader of the Marines who raised the flag
on Iwo Jimo. In the photo and the memorial, he is the one that has his
hands not on the flagpole but supporting his "boys."

They're calling for a high of 30°F (-1°C) here in Raleigh, with wind chill
making it feel like the low teens or single digits.

The average high temperature here for January is 51°F (0°C), but it's not
unheard of for it to hit the low 70s on New Years Day.

OTOH, a good cold winter means fewer fleas for pet owners to worry about next

2017-01-02 Thread David Mann
Sorry I didn't mean to belittle your fond memories of the area. The rural
towns around here are great places with very friendly people and of course good
scenery. My comment was aimed more at what us city folk see as a lack of
nightlife, which I'm a bit old for anyway.

You'd barely recognise Ashburton now, it's changed a lot even in the past
decade. The dairy boom saw a bit of expansion going on. Sadly the dairy
farmers are starting to find it hard since China slowed down.

Cheers,
Dave

It was memorable because of the people. We moved in with a crew of about 100
people, and the town welcomed us and partied with us. We had a great shoot in

It's new years eve here, I'm drinking a one of the last of my designer
beers from this fall, and catching up on email. I'd say it's almost
spring like, but really it's a warm winter's day. We've already had
arctic cold this winter, and there's snow in the forecast so I'm going
to enjoy this weather while it lasts.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Isn't there some list rule about letting being reasonable interfere with an

Here's an idea, I'm sure that most of us have some piece of photo gear that
works, but isn't terribly useful or valuable. Maybe an old spotmatic that you
bought for the 50/1.4 supertak that came with it. Maybe we should have some
sort of fundraiser where we each put that piece of gear up for sale, and donate
the money, up to $20, to Doug to cover hosting fees.

Not only would that raise money for the PDML, that'll encourage some of us to
clear out our gear cabinets a bit to make room for new gear, and even better
yet, give the others and excuse to buy a silly lens thats fun, but not entirely
useful.
