FWIW -
I upgraded my K20D a few days ago & got to try a few lenses on it yesterday
to see if I could notice any difference in focus operation.
None of this is objective as I didn't do any before & after testing but I
can say that subjectively the K20D (with version 1.03) SEEM to focus
noticeably quicker (both near & far focusing ) with my 300mm f4.5 FA &

the firmware to ver 1.03 and continued to shoot. I did expected some

DA*300 "flying seagull hit rate" improved at least three times! Also my

Go and let your lens to be repaired or replaced. There's something wrong
with it. The one I tested was absolutely noiseless and not much slower on
focusing than FA50/1.4.

I've put a service request in with Pentax. Seeing as how the lens is less
than a month old and came to me noisy, I'm asking for a replacement.

We'll see what they say.

Yes and no.
I don't pass all my time in Canikon forums but as it is true most
Pentax guys complain for speed, many Canikon users complain for
accuracy issues.

I won't guess anything about who is right or who isn't because I never
used a DSLR from Canikon and hence, couldn't compare.
But as we say in French (although I translate to English of course),

DA*55 is not very FAST, but it's really SILENT. If you say, your lens
makes some noise, there's most probably some mechanical fault or
obstacle, that may also impact the focusing speed.

Could it be defective? Both of my DA* lenses focus faster than my FA

I suppose it's possible I got a bad lens, though one would hope that
for what they are charging for these things they will be a little
slice of perfection in every box.

I haven't heard of anyone with this lens say it is fast focusing though.

Pentax doesn't have a marketing division. They've got 1 guy who

That depends. Nobody ever accused the 85 f1.2L of being fast. The 50

notably slower than its predecessor. The big boys tend to prefer
slower but accurate for their portrait lenses.

The 55/1.4 id known to a bit slow to focus, although it is very
precisewhen it locks.

At the same time, this is supposed to be a portrait lens, so I'd say
I'd better have it AF well rather than fast.
Still, could be faster, indeed.

I hate to say it, but the big boys in the sandbox seem to be able to get
fast and accurate out of their AF systems.

You'd think so to, but i had to send in my new DA F 50 2.8 to get
"tuned" to the K10D for focus issues, and the clamp switch does not
function well.

The 55/1.4 takes almost a second to travel from close focus to infinity.
This is about 3 times longer than what it takes for the FA50/1.4 to do the
same thing.
And while the motor is silent, the mechanism is far from silent.

Bob, if you're talking about K10D, you can downgrade if needed :)
Just need a hacked firmware (which really is just older firmware with
modded version number) and that's it.

Thanks Graydon and Tim.
I don't own any SDM lenses, screw drive only!
I don't want to install this update if it's not useful for the old drive also.

Hi Bob --

Can't speak for Tim; I'm using screw drive or no-drive (M-42) lenses.
Don't believe I own an SDM lens.

The "focus confirmation/focus lock is faster" so far holds with the DA
55-300, Tamron SP 500/f8, Rokinon 800/f8, and the FA100 macro. (With,
admittedly, the limiter on.)

I have yet to check if it works better trying to get focus lock on my
stealth-black cat.

Don't see any way it could be driving the lens faster; it looks to be
purely a question of focus detection.

The Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 has 2 modes or VR (SR), passive & active.

Passive is what you use most of the time, & corrects for hand held
motions. But if you happen to be shooting from a moving platform of
some description, you have the option to flick it over to active.

I've not as yet been in a situation where I have needed the active mode though.

Yup.

Historical "point camera at flying gull in a bright sky" lock rate has
been about one in five. Today's 20 gulls all locked. Most of the
vulture and hawk attempts locked, too.

Focus confirmation with the 1.03 firmware is also much, much faster.

No idea what, if anything, it did to anti-shake, but the auto-focus
improvement is substantial.

Yesterday was waiting for a White-throated Dipper. While waiting I

Today I sat by the same river, with same lens, at exactly same spot.

pretty fast to. Impressive :-)

Cheeky. :-)

One thing the SR doesn't understand is vibration introduced by other
than human motion. I noticed this again a couple of days ago when
shooting from a boat deck. The SR failed to compensate properly while
the engine produced vibrations I could feel through my feet.

I really hope the upgrade will improve this. Maybe just a little bit,
but anything would be welcome. :-)

If I did that, I'd be rushing about catching the hummingbirds which do
not inhabit the back garden by the beak and interrogating them sternly
concerning flight technique.

I'm currently running between 10 and 15 percent usable hand-held shots
