FWIW - I upgraded my K20D a few days ago & got to try a few lenses on it yesterday to see if I could notice any difference in focus operation. Yes and no. I don't pass all my time in Canikon forums but as it is true most Pentax guys complain for speed, many Canikon users complain for accuracy issues. I won't guess anything about who is right or who isn't because I never used a DSLR from Canikon and hence, couldn't compare. Myself, I was very skeptical about any AF improvement before conducting the test. Now I have to admit, that somehow the new FW makes long lenses to focus faster. DA*55 is not very FAST, but it's really SILENT. If you say, your lens makes some noise, there's most probably some mechanical fault or obstacle, that may also impact the focusing speed. Passive is what you use most of the time, & corrects for hand held motions. But if you happen to be shooting from a moving platform of some description, you have the option to flick it over to active. Re: K20D firmware update
Another form person claims they actually called and asked Pentax and was told 1.03 was to enhance SR effectiveness by improving the accuracy of determining lens focal length. Today's 20 gulls all locked. Most of the vulture and hawk attempts locked, too. Focus confirmation with the 1.03 firmware is also much, much faster. No idea what, if anything, it did to anti-shake, but the auto-focus improvement is substantial. -- Graydon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: K20D firmware update
I'm pretty sure it has an impact on AF. Yesterday was waiting for a White-throated Dipper. While waiting I played a bit with the AF at the stream. No way I could get the damn thing to lock except when trying at some rocks. After wards I did the upgrade. Today I sat by the same river, with same lens, at exactly same spot. The light was very similar. When retesting, it focused just as we should expect it to do. Every time I tried it focused, and it did pretty fast to. Impressive :-) -- MaritimTim 2009/4/9 Dario Bonazza : > The following content have been improved in Version 1.03 > Improved the accuracy of SR (Shake Reduction) function. > http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/k20d_s.html > > Dario -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

2009/4/9 Mark Roberts : >> Anyone care to suggest how you tell if the shake reduction actually >> works better? :) > > Drink 7-8 cups of coffee and give it a try :) Cheeky. :-) One thing the SR doesn't understand is vibration introduced by other than human motion. I noticed this again a couple of days ago when shooting from a boat deck. The SR failed to compensate properly while the engine produced vibrations I could feel through my feet. I really hope the upgrade will improve this. Maybe just a little bit, but anything would be welcome. :-) Jostein -- http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/ http://alunfoto.blogspot.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Well a lot of poeple on usual forums claim the AF is improved, specially in low light. You may want to check... Thibault Massart aka Thibouille -- Photo: K10D,Z1,SuperA,KX,MX, P30t and KR-10x ;) ... I just downloaded 1.03 and am now headed for my 50~135 ready to convince myself that SDM AF is MUCH faster. ;) ..hope so.. I'm currently running between 10 and 15 percent usable hand-held shots from the 800mm mirror lens; if it goes over 20%, I can always credit the firmware. :) -- Graydon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
