Christine,
You've got to let them in on the secret.
LSD is the acronym for Lake Shore Drive,
a 6 lane highway up the north shore of Chicago's lakefront.
It's conjested every morning and evening rush, but a beautiful drive.
It was imortalized in some song or another, but not very 'imortalized' I

Damn. I got smoked out!

Tho I was born in Chicago I left shortly after learning to walk, to
St. Joe MI for a few years, then on to Long Island, NY. So I beg off
being familiar with the contraction of Lake Shore Drive. From several
visits 55 years ago and photos I've seen in the interim, I have a
mental picture of the road, curving along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Now back to my history lessons...

Re: Peso: Warning - cat photo

2009-03-08 Thread Bob Sullivan
Paul,
It was quite an innovation for it's time - pre super highways (1930's).
It had a set of curbs that could be raised or lowered, changing the
road from 4 lanes southbound into city center in the AM and 2 northbound into
4 lane northbound out of the city in the PM and 2 southbound.
The LSD and Outer Drive are argueably the prettiest drive in Chicago.

It was originally called the Outer Drive. My dad never got used to the
LSD name and continued to call it the Outer Drive until he passed
away. On the south side it becomes South Shore Drive.

About 7: Ann would supervise. Marnie would install the lightbulb; Ahmita
(I apologize if I spelled your name wrong), Rebecca, and Christine would act
as support: hold the stool, hand Marnie the lightbulb etc. Wendy would

I like your way of thinking.

But naturally we'd all photograph it too, and each other, and, the dogs and
each other with the dogs. And the grumpy old men who'd all suddenly find
better things to do and stalk away, because while they like to take pictures,
they don't like having their pictures taken.

One of the things I learned when I first went camping and had to cook for

Your second lesson is, with the light on in your tent everybody outside

Lesson numero trois: tents are not soundproof.

Quatro: it is impossible to sleep in a tent

Cinq: in Britain all that snuffling and shuffling and farting outside is a

Sixo: all that snuffling and shuffling and farting inside is your partner.

Actually, we have a Coleman lamp, which is a bit odd for 2 folks who don't

HTH, Marnie aka Doe :-) I also need, being older, an inflatable mattress

We have one of these too, which we plan to bring. There was a really bad

we gave them our bed & we bought an air mattress to sleep on. It was quite
comfortable.

LOL! The first year I went camping, I learnt that it isn't a repeatable
experience in the UK in a tent. Of course, such things are organised during
public holidays, which by definition means the weather will be foul. At the
end of that weekend, we all looked like we'd spent a weekend in the
trenches.

The second year, I turned up in a Land-Rover and camped in that. The weather
was again foul and yet for me, a dry, warm and enjoyable weekend and no need
to carry loads of stuff.

The third and subsequent years would easily have been mistaken for four
wheel drive meetings.

One of the things I learned when I first went camping and had to cook for
myself and others is this: you have to turn the bacon over.

Your second lesson is, with the light on in your tent everybody outside can
see everything that's happening inside.

Lesson numero trois: tents are not soundproof.

Quatro: it is impossible to sleep in a tent

Cinq: in Britain all that snuffling and shuffling and farting outside is a
badger. In the USA it's a hungry puma.

Sixo: all that snuffling and shuffling and farting inside is your partner.

Septicus: When you do finally pluck up the courage (and desperation) to take
that walk outside at night, wear wellies. Otherwise the hedgehog spines
stick in your foot.

Octocus: It never rains but it pours

Novena: Enjoy!

That should get you going. You should rent on DVD or VHS the
series, Ann. It's great.

slight problem... nothing to play it on :-)
but I'll check it out on line

thanks Chris

First, try YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqzES5bjtfo&NR=1

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=328Q79GoR7g

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAh3Mb3Z9SM&feature=related

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Enmztm9uMzQ&feature=related

Then, try getting it from Netflix, direct to your computer. Same price
as a regular monthly service.

And when you've seen all that British buffoonery (really is top notch
- shown only on PBS) then get and view the "Red Dwarf" series. Unlike
Blackadder which covers over 500 years of histerical, Red Dwarf covers
10s of millions of years in the future. Sort of a Blackadder
futuristic except they're all stuck on the same (rather Large) ship.

A clip from an early show: Lister (a human who was put in stasis for
longer than planned) takes a little convincing when he finds out he is
the only human left alive on Red Dwarf. (The Ship's name)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyKF2qd0-iQ

Rimmer, an officer on the ship who has been dead for millions of
years, but is now a hologram, and Cat, the ships illegal mascot who
has evolved into a super-cool self-involved black man with a penchant
for fashion, Kryten, the robot, and Holly - the computer.

A little stove thingee comes in very handy if you like hot coffee in the
morning. OTOH, lots of people bring stoves. OTOH, you'd be using their fuel.

I've done some camping, mostly in my younger years, and one thing I would
find it hard to camp without, a lantern. They have self-igniting lanterns now,
much easier. If you stay up after dark, a flashlight doesn't cut it.

HTH, Marnie aka Doe :-) I also need, being older, an inflatable mattress or
a good pad. My bones no longer like the ground. Coleman makes a pretty good
inflatable mattress and it also can, in a pinch, work as extra bedding for
visitors at home.
