UPDATE: It appears the problem WAS in the card reader. I still haven't
figured out why it was only affecting cards from the K-3?

Re: Problems reading SD cards

2024-02-25 Thread mike wilson
Not wishing to teach granny how to suck eggs but you could set your old hard
drive as the C: drive by installing it where the existing new drive plugs in.
The new drive can then be plugged in and act as an internal storage (usually
D:) drive. Swap as much data as possible from the old drive to the new and you
should have enough space for a reinstall of W7, PS6 or whatever route you
choose.

If I just select 8 images they seem to copy fine and then I can select
8 more and they'll copy, but rarely works for a third batch of 8.
Repeat remove & reinsert & select the next 8 ...

I only had the problem with the K-3 cards - 2-32GB Sandisk Extreme

I'm pretty sure I only lost a single image to corruption. Sucks, but
at least it's not worse. I copied all the images over to my file server.

John, as you work through your sorting/naming process, one thing that I have
found to be helpful:
In Lightroom Classic, you can start the Search process, then at the top
choose Metadata, within metadata choose Camera. Select *ist-D or whatever, and
then you can sort by date, and scroll through looking for gaps or anamolies in
naming or numbering. Then repeat the process after selecting a different camera
to work with.

I'll look into both possibilities.

The hard part is going to be figuring out if I actually have the media

I hope I don't have to replace the Photoshop computer. For one thing, it
has a LightScribe Blue-ray/DVD/CDROM burner & new computers you can't
even get a DVD player.

They don't even build the chassis with a bay to install one anymore.

Part of the reason for this is the default for Pentax Raw files is
"IMGP" and a couple of my cameras have rolled over past and
the K-1 numbering was reset when I had to send it in for repair after

I only had the problem with the K-3 cards - 2-32GB Sandisk Extreme

I'm pretty sure I only lost a single image to corruption. Sucks, but
at least it's not worse. I copied all the images over to my file server.

I don't know if it's the camera, the cards, the card reader or the

Windoze 10 definitely would not install on this computer (I shall not

I'll shut the Photoshop computer down tomorrow, open it up & give it a

Yes. The photos were all still there on the card when I looked at the
little TV screen on the back.

I finally did manage to copy them all (except for one that was
corrupted) over to the computer ... by various means.

I figured out it was pulling down approximately 8 images before the
error would occur, so I went over to Windows where I could pull up the
DCIM folder & view the sub-folders.

I made a DCIM "copy" folder on my desktop and then copied the
sub-folders one at a time. When it would error out, I'd remove the card
reader from the USB and reinsert it.

I could see which files had copied before the error, so I'd take the
next 8 files & copy them ... then the NEXT 8 until I got an error ...

At which point repeat removing & reinserting the card reader and carry
on ...

Once I had all the photos (verified I can see & open them from Bridge) I
have since reformatted the cards.

Can you use the camera as the card reader? That is, connect the camera to the
computer and download from there.

I don't have the necessary equipment to do it that way so I don't know.

Can you download to a non-Windows device, such as a phone?

Ditto ...

EXCEPT I did the process I outline above on a different Windoze computer
(my game & goofing off computer) and then copied the images over to my
file server and then pulled them from the file server to the Photoshop
Computer.

Since then I've been going through ALL of my photos on the Photoshop
Computer & verifying them.

It's been 20 years plus 1 week since I got my *ist-D. The *ist-D, K10D &
K20D have all rolled over past at least once.

I'm up to 2016 so far. The only thing I've run into is there are periods
when I didn't rename the photos upon uploading ... IMGP to
istD-0; IMGP to istD-1 and so on for the K10D, K20D, K-3 &
K-1 (the K-1 got the numbers reset when I had to send it in for repair,
so it's already at "K-1_1" even though it hadn't rolled over).

And I've found duplicate folders where one will have the images IMGP1234
and the other will have Kxx-01234. Takes me a while to compare the
folders and make sure there are no images I haven't duplicated in
renamed images folder.

I keep ALL of my images - good, bad & ugly - because having gaps in the
numbering confuses me and I worry I've lost images somewhere, but once I
have verified that I have all the images in both folders I will delete
the folder that doesn't have the images renamed.

Anyway, I've got less than 10 years worth of images still left to verify
... so back to work.

Re: Problems reading SD cards

Since Win7 was working for you have you considered backing everything up
and re-installing Win7?  If all you use that computer for is photo
processing there shouldn't be a lot of software to re-install.

OTOH, if you have a computer running (or able to run) Win10, Win10 has a
compatibility mode that you can activate that allows you to run aged
games and software.

Re: SD cards

That more or less reinforces the impression that I got from this article,

https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/pentax-k-3-ii/fastest-sd-card-comparison-test/

You really need a card with a write speed of about 40MB/s to cover the
K-3* and K-1 bus speed, and a fast read speed if you're using an
external card reader.

Sandisk cards with a 40MB/s write speeds are going for about ~$5 per
16-32GB on amazon.  So if you don't care about the maximum read speed
you can buy quite a bit of memory for not a lot of money.

*Assuming that the K-3 and K-3II have the same bus architecture, with I
think is a fair assumption.

Re: SD cards

2019-05-28 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Larry,

I've written some thoughts on this almost exactly 1 year ago:
http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2018-May/445228.html

Some additional thoughts:
Samsung, whose cards I liked most recently, seems to have stopped
producing SD cards, but now they produce micro-SD cards exclusively,
selling them with an adapter to SD size. (also noted by John)

I don't know, but I would assume these cards are as good. And, I suspect,
Samsung makes them this way to make these cards more versatile: you can
insert them into your cell phone or tablet.

As for the "sweet spot", I've observed that 1 step below the mass-produced
(i.e. across several brands) maximum capacity of a specific type (and
sub-type (e.g. SanDisk's Ultra-equivalent, Extreme-equivalent, etc.) of
the specific category of devices, usually has the optimum price (for SD
cards, HDDs, and SSDs).

There are some transitional periods when there is a jump in the capacities
available. In that case, only one, sometimes two companies have the newest
capacities available (most often SanDisk). In that case, this rule could
be broken, until most companies catch up.

At this moment, it seems to me that this "sweet spot" (GB for $1), is
either at 128 or 256GB, and it probably depends on the speed rating
(e.g. equivalent of Sandisk Extreme Pro and Ultra)

Also a factor to keep in mind: what is the maximum SD card capacity
acceptable by your oldest camera?

E.g. Pentax K-7 doesn't take cards with over 32GB capacity (IIRC).
I don't know what that limit is for K-3 and K-1.

HTH,
Igor

It's been a while since I've purchased SD cards.

What is the current price/performance/quality sweet spot these days? Ideally
in make, model and size. And if someone bought cards in the near past, a
pointer to the item in the store would be fantastic.

I'm going to need to get a couple cards soon, and I'm hoping someone else
recently did the research, because the sweet spot tends to change every month
or two.

The last I checked you got the most storage for your money at about 64GB.

Some people are Sandisk, or nothing, others are happy with PNY, Patriot etc.
There are also other "name brands" that one could look at.

Also, the various speed ratings on SD cards are difficult to sort out, at
best. 90Mb/S isn't always 90 Megabits, there's also class 10 etc. With the
sucky bus in the K-1, there's probably a certain point where faster doesn't
improve the camera's performance, but I can always hope that new models will
be better.

The ultra cards are slow, fast enough for the write speed of most Pentax
cameras but slow to download to a good add. The Sandisk extreme pro 64gb cards
are much faster and in my experience, very reliable.

One thing I've noticed lately is that most SD cards aren't really SD cards,
they're those Micro-SD card holders.

I generally tend to buy whatever Costco has on a twofer. Haven't had any
problems with those cards yet.

I'm going to need to get a couple cards soon, and I'm hoping someone else
recently did the research, because the sweet spot tends to change every month or
two.

The last I checked you got the most storage for your money at about 64GB.

Some people are Sandisk, or nothing, others are happy with PNY, Patriot etc.
There are also other "name brands" that one could look at.

Also, the various speed ratings on SD cards are difficult to sort out, at best.
90Mb/S isn't always 90 Megabits, there's also class 10 etc. With the sucky bus
in the K-1, there's probably a certain point where faster doesn't improve the
camera's performance, but I can always hope that new models will be better.

Actually I was wrong you can find it for less than that on Amazon.  Same

I haven't been able to find tests on a lot of less expensive cards,

quite low on pennies, but it looked at the time that most, but not
all, major brand cards that were rated at 80-90Mb/s were at least
capable of 30Mb/s which would have very little effect on performance
in the K-3II, since it depends on depth of buffer a lot more than bus
speed for it's performance.

I'm still using a K-5II and I've only once, that I remember, run out
of buffer with that camera.  I've been primarily using PNY cards.
They were cheap and available a number of places a while ago, and the
specifications were good for the price.  I could probably replace
them with cards that were twice as fast in actual use for half the
price/MB, but the camera bus speed is more of an issue than the
actual throughput of the card.

It’s been a couple of years since I bought memory cards.

My standard cards now are Sandisk Extreme 64G and Lexar Pro 1000x 128G. They
support write speeds faster than any camera I own and download to my Mac mini
at nearly the full theoretical speed of USB3.

Better than that, or larger capacity than that, I do not need. :-)

Re: K3 II image count on SD Cards

2017-07-27 Thread Zos Xavius
No issue at all. If you remove the card or anything it will default to
the next card. Whatever card was inserted in first is the default. The
indicator on the top plate LCD just shows the remaining shots on the
card you are currently using. In the info screen on the back it
highlights where it is saving images. Yeah if you are using spillover
its always a good idea to make sure both cards are clear before your
format in case this sort of thing happens.

Re: K3 II image count on SD Cards

2017-07-27 Thread PhotoCapturesbyJeffery.com
I have it set to save only DNG files and have it set for SD 1 and when
full it is to start recording to SD 2. What my confusion is with the
total it shows on the back of the camera.

Example: On back of camera it shows card holds 250 images in SD1 and
when I fill the card up and it does as it should and records to the next
card. Shouldn't the number that remains on the menu for SD1 be 0
available? It shows a high number that is still available.

I hope that makes some sense. I have had a really really bad day at my
day job and my brain is not fully functioning at the moment. Trying my
best not to worry or be overly stressed but keeps getting harder and
harder to be optimistic and to make any sort of future plans. Sorry
don't mean to vent.

Are both cards the same size?

Also note that usually Lightroom and other such programs are set to only import
New images. Were both cards Formatted in camera before your recent session? If
not then maybe you have many more images on one or both cards; you camera sees
them but your LR won’t pay attention to them… That would definitely confuse the
count.

I have always set the two slots with DNG capture on slot 1, simultaneous jpeg
capture on slot 2 and so have never had exactly your situation.

K3 II image count on SD Cards

2017-07-26 Thread PhotoCapturesbyJeffery.com
I ended up saving up and got the K3II. I have come across what may or
may not be an issue. I posted this to the Pentax Forum but I haven't
heard from anyone yet so thought I would see if anyone here might have
an answer.

I was downloading images to my computer from this weekends outings. I
had thought all images recorded to one SD Card but as I was going
through the images I realized not all of them were on the card. I
checked the other card that I partially used on Sunday and sure enough
31 of the images from Saturday were on that card. Everything recorded
correctly so that isn't an issue but I am confused by what the camera
states as far as what is left on the card.

See link to image and you will notice that I ended up switching the
cards when I put them back into the camera.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/attachments/58-troubleshooting-beginner-help/363948d1501108341-k3-ii-image-count-sd-cards-0726171705.jpg

Saturday SD1 = 168 + 31 that was added to SD2
Sunday SD2 an additional 7 (too hot to do much more than that)

What is the issue if there is one?

Thanks...

Re: OT - Wi-Fi Enabled SD Cards

2017-04-17 Thread Brian Walters
Thanks, Godfrey.

Yes - I'm beginning to think that a straight card reader for the tablet
would be less trouble. The Lunmix isn't used often so it's difficult to
justify the cost compared to the slight inconvenience of the card
reader.

I can't recommend the Eye-Fi cards on the basis of their inconsistent behavior
and unreliability. I went through four of them trying to get them to work in a
couple of different cameras. They never did in a consistent and reliable way.

Other vendors, maybe. I have tried any since my more recent cameras (except the
Leica M-D) have all been WiFi enabled.
For the M-D, I use the Lightning to SD Card Camera Connection cable to move
files to my iPad, which is quite fast if a little less convenient.

Re: OT - Wi-Fi Enabled SD Cards

2017-04-17 Thread Peter McIntosh
Hi Brian,

I've done both and card reader is definitely quicker. Eye-fi in the
TG850 means I don't have to open it all the time; its waterproof so I
can transfer while it's wet. With other cameras it's been card reader.

Card reader is definitely cheaper - jaycar is your friend :-)

I'm in two minds about this - might be just as easy to connect a card
reader directly to the tablet - a little more cumbersome but, for the

OT - Wi-Fi Enabled SD Cards

2017-04-11 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

Just wondering if anyone has experience with wi-fi SD cards such as
EyeFi Mobi.

My wife has a Lumix LX-5. It's an older model but she quite likes it (so
do I :-)) but it's not wi-fi enabled. She would like to be able to
transfer files to her Anroid phone/tablet for posting to Facebook. I'm
wondering if a wi-fi card would be worth considering. Note that she
isn't looking to transfer large numbers of images, so speed of transfer
isn't critical but reliability of the w-fi connection is.

Any thoughts?

Larry,

Silver-colored Samsung "pro" seemed to be consistently a reasonable deal
with a _high quality_ and _speed_ in the past year or so. I haven't looked
in the past 2 months. (I am more keen on this than on SanDisk lately.)

Here is the current version of it:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1181360-REG/samsung_mb_sg64e_am_sdxc_64gb_pro_memory.html

I have the U1 incarnation of it.

I haven't tried this myself, but it's been bookmarked for when I need to
buy a new one (if that happens soon):

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1164630-REG/pny_technologies_p_sdx64u395_ge_64gb_elite_sdxc_uhs_1_card.html
THe reviews seem to be very good, and the price is one of the most
competitive at the moment ($23 until the end of today).

OT - some sale prices for SD cards

2014-11-18 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Just in case someone is looking for some new SD cards:
Right now, Amazon has a deal sale (until midnight Pacific time) for
PNY SDHC/SDXC cards:
http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Elite-Performance-Speed-Class/dp/B00HIKBW1G/
E.g. 64 GB goes for $28, 32 GB for $15.

However, - I also found SD cards of the brand I haven't heard before (but
with overall mostly nice reviews on Amazon) - Komputer Bay:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008AN1C1A/
where comparable 64 GB card goes for $25.

.. but I expect that there might be more sales at the end of the month.

OT - MLC vs SLC SD cards

2014-09-01 Thread Igor Roshchin

I just dicovered that some of the faster SD cards,
e.g. Ultimate from Transcend are MLC (Multi-level cell)
as opposed to SLC (single level cell).
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71ooxNtTTTL._SL1500_.jpg

Panasonic also explicitly mentions SLC vs MLC in their lineup:
http://panasonic.net/avc/sdcard/industrial_sd/lineup.html

So, I wonder if all fastest cards in the lineup for other manifacturers
are also MLC (e.g. SanDisk Extreme or Extreme Pro?).
I was unable to find that information about SanDisk lineup.
Does anybody here know that?

From what I know, MLC are cheaper and can be faster than SLC,
but have short[er] life-cycle (number of rewritings).
see e.g. here:
http://www.oempcworld.com/support/SLC_vs_MLC.htm
On another hand, I am not sure if that matters.
I am thinking, how many time each of my cards gets completely
written-over. I guess, roughly about once a month (at most).
So, even with the endurance of 10k cycles, it should be sufficient
for about 5-7 (or even 10) years that I expect to used the card.

Any thoughts on MLC vs SLC in SD cards?

In the past months I had two cases of a glitch on two different cards
(one - SanDisk, the other one - HP),
so, I am a bit hesitant to rely on those. Hence, I am considering buying
a couple of new cards.

Thank you,

Igor

Testing SD cards

2010-06-19 Thread Larry Colen
Last week, I lost some files due to what I thought was user error. They still
seem to be on the SD card, but when I try to recover them, they are corrupted.

Today, I was using another SD card, and when I went to read the files off it, a
lot of them seem to be corrupted or damaged.

Is there good (mac or linux) software for testing SD cards?

These are transcend 8GB class 6.

No I haven't. This is not the same card that I lost data from the other day,
but it's the same type, bought at the same time.

Unfortunately I don't have the money to go upgrading to sandisk SD cards right

Has anyone had problems formatting an SD card in one camera (K20D) and using it

It sounds kind of odd that both cards would go sour at the same time -
how old are they?
I format my cards in-camera before use every time after moving images
to my computer.
Do you have the K20D and the K-x set to the same file/folder naming converntion?
Have you tried connecting a USB cable directly to the camera to get the images?

Larry, I'd like to offer a modification of your statement below.

Once card outpaces the camera you'd know:
1. You're using your h/w to the fullest extent possible
2. You're not going to buy faster cards as you *know* what you need.

Thus, I think it makes sense to try to find a card that outpaces your
camera, but only just.

I don't think it's all about listed speed. Reliability goes a long way here
as well.
Right now, for me, the best combination of speed and reliability is Sandisk
Ultra II which are plenty fast enough for most of what I do.

I do my best to make sure I buy genuine ones, which for me means I go to a
retailer I trust and I buy off the shelf.
The one and only time I've bought cards off the net (Patriot 8gb Class C
from NCIX) is also the only time I've had a card failure.

When I got the K20 I picked up a 4G card; the camera store recommended
a Lexar, and I've been quite happy with it. The interesting thing is
that it came with a little USB-key card reader, and that sucker is
*amazingly* fast, way faster than any card reader USB, or FireWire,
that I've used before. The K20 itself is no speed demon through a USB
wire, and since the RAWs are about 20M a pop, the speed is much
appreciated.

SD cards and the K20

2008-04-29 Thread William Robb
I decided to buy some more memory, and with the files sizes of the K20, I went
with 8gb cards. I
also went kinda cheap and bought some Patriot class 6 cards.
I decided to run a speed test to see how they compared to the Ultra II and
Extreme III cards
that I have been buying.
So, with the AF turned off, and the shutter speed set to 1/160 second, I fired
continuous bursts
until the buffer filled, and then timed how long it took for the write
indicator to go out.

With the Patriot 8gb class 6 card, the buffer filled at 15 exposures, and took
a full minute to
write.
With the Ultra II, the buffer also filled at 15 exposures, but took about 35
seconds to empty,
and with the Exreme III, the buffer filled at 17 exposures, and took about 17
seconds to empty.

Thats all for now.

Sounds like the class 6 cards are half the write speed of the Ultra
II's, and 1/4 the speed of the Ultra 3's.

Are there faster 4GB/8GB SDHC cards out there for non-insane amounts
of money? I've been contemplating replacing my 2x2GB cards.

The Patriot cards only cost something like $35.00, I was looking at 8gb Ultra

For the most part, the slower write time is fine with me now that the buffer is
a decent size.
Big memory with fast write speeds = though.

Thanks Bob and Bruce. I ened up buying 3 of them. I'll see how they work. The
specs say they are
not as fast as an Ultra 2, but with the buffer size in the K20, I'm finding I
am not as troubled
by write speeds.
The three Patriot cards cost about the same as one 8gig Ultra2 at my local best

Yup. Tried that (nervously) after thinking that might dope-slap the
camera operating system into submission

If it were mine, I'd send the camera to Pentax for repair. Although you might
try taking the batteries out for a day or so. That can sometimes cure flakey
behavior. But I'll bet you have a hardware problem.

2007-12-04 Thread Carlos Royo
One of the SD cards I use in my DS is a Sandisk Ultra II. I've had it
for more than a year and it has worked flawlessly. As Boris said, there
are some fake Sandisk cards floating around. I hope it isn't a problem
with the camera as someone suggested, it would be much worse.

Re: My DS and Sandisk Ultra II SD cards - incompatible somehow?

2007-12-04 Thread Bertil Holmberg
My DS had a problem with SanDisk cards too, although they worked in
the camera, I was unable to read them in my USB card reader.

I thought the first card was a dud so I got it replaced, same problem
with the new one, however.

Changed to a Kingston card that worked fine.

Regards,
Bertil
