Re: Problems reading SD cards
Not wishing to teach granny how to suck eggs but you could set your old hard drive as the C: drive by installing it where the existing new drive plugs in. The new drive can then be plugged in and act as an internal storage (usually D:) drive. Swap as much data as possible from the old drive to the new and you should have enough space for a reinstall of W7, PS6 or whatever route you choose. > On 24/02/2024 17:25 GMT John Sessoms wrote: > > > Bookmarked that link. Re: Problems reading SD cards
John, as you work through your sorting/naming process, one thing that I have found to be helpful: In Lightroom Classic, you can start the Search process, then at the top choose Metadata, within metadata choose Camera. Select *ist-D or whatever, and then you can sort by date, and scroll through looking for gaps or anamolies in naming or numbering. Then repeat the process after selecting a different camera to work with. I'll look into both possibilities. The hard part is going to be figuring out if I actually have the media for Photoshop CS6 Extended and if so where did I put it when I moved? Since Win7 was working for you have you considered backing everything up and re-installing Win7? If all you use that computer for is photo processing there shouldn't be a lot of software to re-install. OTOH, if you have a computer running (or able to run) Win10, Win10 has a compatibility mode that you can activate that allows you to run aged games and software. -p On 2/21/2024 6:54 PM, John Sessoms wrote: I spent today doing some maintenance on my photography - making sure I have all of my images copied off of the memory cards onto the computer & batch renaming by Camera Type & Sequence Number ... so that IMGP5432 from the K-2 becomes K3-05432 Part of the reason for this is the default for Pentax Raw files is "IMGP" and a couple of my cameras have rolled over past and the K-1 numbering was reset when I had to send it in for repair after I fell & yanked the screen off the back. I don't think it's Adobe because I had problems just copying using Windoze with Adobe not involved ... I HOPE it's not the computer because I don't know how I'd transfer CS6 to a new computer. It could be the card reader is getting old. I looked online for a new reader, but haven't yet found one I like. I found a bunch more files I have to rename to get my catalog in order. Don't know if I'm going to get them done before I shut the computer down to clean it out. Problems reading SD cards
I spent today doing some maintenance on my photography - making sure I have all of my images copied off of the memory cards onto the computer & batch renaming by Camera Type & Sequence Number ... so that IMGP5432 from the K-2 becomes K3-05432 Part of the reason for this is the default for Pentax Raw files is "IMGP" and a couple of my cameras have rolled over past and the K-1 numbering was reset when I had to send it in for repair after I fell & yanked the screen off the back. Re: SD cards
That more or less reinforces the impression that I got from this article, https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/pentax-k-3-ii/fastest-sd-card-comparison-test/ You really need a card with a write speed of about 40MB/s to cover the K-3* and K-1 bus speed, and a fast read speed if you're using an external card reader. Sandisk cards with a 40MB/s write speeds are going for about ~$5 per 16-32GB on amazon. So if you don't care about the maximum read speed you can buy quite a bit of memory for not a lot of money. *Assuming that the K-3 and K-3II have the same bus architecture, with I think is a fair assumption. Re: SD cards
Larry, I've written some thoughts on this almost exactly 1 year ago: http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2018-May/445228.html Some additional thoughts: Samsung, whose cards I liked most recently, seems to have stopped producing SD cards, but now they produce micro-SD cards exclusively, selling them with an adapter to SD size. (also noted by John) I don't know, but I would assume these cards are as good. And, I suspect, Samsung makes them this way to make these cards more versatile: you can insert them into your cell phone or tablet. As for the "sweet spot", I've observed that 1 step below the mass-produced (i.e. across several brands) maximum capacity of a specific type (and sub-type (e.g. SanDisk's Ultra-equivalent, Extreme-equivalent, etc.) of the specific category of devices, usually has the optimum price (for SD cards, HDDs, and SSDs). There are some transitional periods when there is a jump in the capacities available. In that case, only one, sometimes two companies have the newest capacities available (most often SanDisk). In that case, this rule could be broken, until most companies catch up. At this moment, it seems to me that this "sweet spot" (GB for $1), is either at 128 or 256GB, and it probably depends on the speed rating (e.g. equivalent of Sandisk Extreme Pro and Ultra) Also a factor to keep in mind: what is the maximum SD card capacity acceptable by your oldest camera? E.g. Pentax K-7 doesn't take cards with over 32GB capacity (IIRC). I don't know what that limit is for K-3 and K-1. HTH, Igor It's been a while since I've purchased SD cards. What is the current price/performance/quality sweet spot these days? Ideally in make, model and size. And if someone bought cards in the near past, a pointer to the item in the store would be fantastic. I'm going to need to get a couple cards soon, and I'm hoping someone else recently did the research, because the sweet spot tends to change every month or two. The last I checked you got the most storage for your money at about 64GB. Some people are Sandisk, or nothing, others are happy with PNY, Patriot etc. There are also other "name brands" that one could look at. Also, the various speed ratings on SD cards are difficult to sort out, at best. 90Mb/S isn't always 90 Megabits, there's also class 10 etc. With the sucky bus in the K-1, there's probably a certain point where faster doesn't improve the camera's performance, but I can always hope that new models will be better. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157612824732477/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Actually I was wrong you can find it for less than that on Amazon. Same card, same part number half the price. On 5/24/2019 8:05 PM, P. J. Alling wrote: Oh yes, I forgot to mention. So a card with a real write speed of 40Mb/s would probably do. The site that tested the K-3II is here with a comparison of a variety of cards. https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/pentax-k-3-ii/fastest-sd-card-comparison-test/ This group of tests was obviously done some time ago as a number of the cards mentioned are no longer available in all storage sizes. I haven't been able to find tests on a lot of less expensive cards, and haven't really been looking since I can't seem to find a reasonably priced and warrantied K-3 since last December, when I was quite low on pennies, but it looked at the time that most, but not all, major brand cards that were rated at 80-90Mb/s were at least capable of 30Mb/s which would have very little effect on performance in the K-3II, since it depends on depth of buffer a lot more than bus speed for it's performance. I'm still using a K-5II and I've only once, that I remember, run out of buffer with that camera. I've been primarily using PNY cards. They were cheap and available a number of places a while ago, and the specifications were good for the price. I could probably replace them with cards that were twice as fast in actual use for half the price/MB, but the camera bus speed is more of an issue than the actual throughput of the card. Oh yes, I forgot to mention. It appears that the best bang for the buck if you're using a Pentax camera, is this https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-UHS-I-Memory-SDSDUNC-064G-GN6IN/dp/B0143IIP4W which the afore mentioned website tested but not in the K-3II On 5/24/2019 7:51 PM, P. Re: SD cards
It’s been a couple of years since I bought memory cards. My standard cards now are Sandisk Extreme 64G and Lexar Pro 1000x 128G. They support write speeds faster than any camera I own and download to my Mac mini at nearly the full theoretical speed of USB3. Better than that, or larger capacity than that, I do not need. :-) G > On May 24, 2019, at 3:46 PM, Larry Colen wrote: > > It's been a while since I've purchased SD cards. > > What is the current price/performance/quality sweet spot these days? Re: K3 II image count on SD Cards
No issue at all. If you remove the card or anything it will default to the next card. Whatever card was inserted in first is the default. The indicator on the top plate LCD just shows the remaining shots on the card you are currently using. In the info screen on the back it highlights where it is saving images. Yeah if you are using spillover its always a good idea to make sure both cards are clear before your format in case this sort of thing happens. Re: K3 II image count on SD Cards
I have it set to save only DNG files and have it set for SD 1 and when full it is to start recording to SD 2. What my confusion is with the total it shows on the back of the camera. Example: On back of camera it shows card holds 250 images in SD1 and when I fill the card up and it does as it should and records to the next card. Shouldn't the number that remains on the menu for SD1 be 0 available? It shows a high number that is still available. I hope that makes some sense. I have had a really really bad day at my day job and my brain is not fully functioning at the moment. Trying my best not to worry or be overly stressed but keeps getting harder and harder to be optimistic and to make any sort of future plans. Sorry don't mean to vent. Thanks, Godfrey. Yes - I'm beginning to think that a straight card reader for the tablet would be less trouble. The Lunmix isn't used often so it's difficult to justify the cost compared to the slight inconvenience of the card reader. I can't recommend the Eye-Fi cards on the basis of their inconsistent behavior and unreliability. I went through four of them trying to get them to work in a couple of different cameras. They never did in a consistent and reliable way. Other vendors, maybe. I have tried any since my more recent cameras (except the Leica M-D) have all been WiFi enabled. For the M-D, I use the Lightning to SD Card Camera Connection cable to move files to my iPad, which is quite fast if a little less convenient. Re: OT - Wi-Fi Enabled SD Cards
Hi Brian, I've done both and card reader is definitely quicker. Eye-fi in the TG850 means I don't have to open it all the time; its waterproof so I can transfer while it's wet. With other cameras it's been card reader. Card reader is definitely cheaper - jaycar is your friend :-) Ciao, Pete Mac in Melbourne On 18 April 2017 at 08:11, Brian Walters <supera1...@fastmail.fm> wrote: > Hi Pete > > Thanks for the feedback. > > I'm in two minds about this - might be just as easy to connect a card > reader directly to the tablet - a little more cumbersome but, for the > small number of image transfers involved, it still might be acceptable. > Still contemplating... > > Cheers > > Brian > > ++ > Brian Walters > Western Sydney Australia > http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ > > > > On Sun, Apr 16, 2017, at 05:36 PM, Peter McIntosh wrote: >> Hi Brian, >> >> I've got a 16Gb Eyefi Mobi card in my Olympus TG-850. Hi Pete Thanks for the feedback. I'm in two minds about this - might be just as easy to connect a card reader directly to the tablet - a little more cumbersome but, for the small number of image transfers involved, it still might be acceptable. OT - Wi-Fi Enabled SD Cards
G'day all Just wondering if anyone has experience with wi-fi SD cards such as EyeFi Mobi. My wife has a Lumix LX-5. It's an older model but she quite likes it (so do I :-)) but it's not wi-fi enabled. She would like to be able to transfer files to her Anroid phone/tablet for posting to Facebook. I'm wondering if a wi-fi card would be worth considering. Note that she isn't looking to transfer large numbers of images, so speed of transfer isn't critical but reliability of the w-fi connection is. Any thoughts? Re: Shopping for 64GB SD cards
Larry, Silver-colored Samsung "pro" seemed to be consistently a reasonable deal with a _high quality_ and _speed_ in the past year or so. I haven't looked in the past 2 months. (I am more keen on this than on SanDisk lately.) Here is the current version of it: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1181360-REG/samsung_mb_sg64e_am_sdxc_64gb_pro_memory.html I have the U1 incarnation of it. I haven't tried this myself, but it's been bookmarked for when I need to buy a new one (if that happens soon): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1164630-REG/pny_technologies_p_sdx64u395_ge_64gb_elite_sdxc_uhs_1_card.html THe reviews seem to be very good, and the price is one of the most competitive at the moment ($23 until the end of today). OT - some sale prices for SD cards
Just in case someone is looking for some new SD cards: Right now, Amazon has a deal sale (until midnight Pacific time) for PNY SDHC/SDXC cards: http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Elite-Performance-Speed-Class/dp/B00HIKBW1G/ E.g. 64 GB goes for $28, 32 GB for $15. However, - I also found SD cards of the brand I haven't heard before (but with overall mostly nice reviews on Amazon) - Komputer Bay: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008AN1C1A/ where comparable 64 GB card goes for $25. .. but I expect that there might be more sales at the end of the month. OT - MLC vs SLC SD cards
I just dicovered that some of the faster SD cards, e.g. Ultimate from Transcend are MLC (Multi-level cell) as opposed to SLC (single level cell). http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71ooxNtTTTL._SL1500_.jpg Panasonic also explicitly mentions SLC vs MLC in their lineup: http://panasonic.net/avc/sdcard/industrial_sd/lineup.html So, I wonder if all fastest cards in the lineup for other manifacturers are also MLC (e.g. SanDisk Extreme or Extreme Pro?). I was unable to find that information about SanDisk lineup. Does anybody here know that? From what I know, MLC are cheaper and can be faster than SLC, but have short[er] life-cycle (number of rewritings). see e.g. here: http://www.oempcworld.com/support/SLC_vs_MLC.htm On another hand, I am not sure if that matters. I am thinking, how many time each of my cards gets completely written-over. I guess, roughly about once a month (at most). So, even with the endurance of 10k cycles, it should be sufficient for about 5-7 (or even 10) years that I expect to used the card. Any thoughts on MLC vs SLC in SD cards? In the past months I had two cases of a glitch on two different cards (one - SanDisk, the other one - HP), so, I am a bit hesitant to rely on those. Hence, I am considering buying a couple of new cards. Re: K 7, maybe shorting out Sd cards
I just had a DA 18-250 stop autofocusing on the K-7. Other lenses continue to work at this point. It goes stop to stop but never achieves focus... about a year old. I can't necessarially say it's the fault of the camera though. Re: K 7, maybe shorting out Sd cards
Well, the lens will not work on the other bodies that I have. I mean the auto focus part. All my other lens work well on the K7 as do they on the K10d and K20d. So I do not think that it is contacts. Also I up dated the firmware in the K7 to ver. 1.02. But this was after the fact.. Haven't tried one in a camera, but I have added a 2GB micro for more memory in my phone and in that application it works fine. Re: SD cards and the K20
When I got the K20 I picked up a 4G card; the camera store recommended a Lexar, and I've been quite happy with it. The interesting thing is that it came with a little USB-key card reader, and that sucker is *amazingly* fast, way faster than any card reader USB, or FireWire, that I've used before. The K20 itself is no speed demon through a USB wire, and since the RAWs are about 20M a pop, the speed is much appreciated. -T -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

SD cards and the K20
I decided to buy some more memory, and with the files sizes of the K20, I went with 8gb cards. I also went kinda cheap and bought some Patriot class 6 cards. I decided to run a speed test to see how they compared to the Ultra II and Extreme III cards that I have been buying. So, with the AF turned off, and the shutter speed set to 1/160 second, I fired continuous bursts until the buffer filled, and then timed how long it took for the write indicator to go out. With the Patriot 8gb class 6 card, the buffer filled at 15 exposures, and took a full minute to write. With the Ultra II, the buffer also filled at 15 exposures, but took about 35 seconds to empty, and with the Exreme III, the buffer filled at 17 exposures, and took about 17 seconds to empty. Thats all for now. Thanks Bob and Bruce. I ened up buying 3 of them. I'll see how they work. The specs say they are not as fast as an Ultra 2, but with the buffer size in the K20, I'm finding I am not as troubled by write speeds. The three Patriot cards cost about the same as one 8gig Ultra2 at my local best buy, so I suppose I can forgive some performance loss. If it were mine, I'd send the camera to Pentax for repair. Although you might try taking the batteries out for a day or so. That can sometimes cure flakey behavior. But I'll bet you have a hardware problem. Paul -- Original message -- From: Charles Robinson [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Dec 4, 2007, at 14:50, Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote: Hmm. Re: My DS and Sandisk Ultra II SD cards - incompatible somehow?
One of the SD cards I use in my DS is a Sandisk Ultra II. I've had it for more than a year and it has worked flawlessly. As Boris said, there are some fake Sandisk cards floating around. I hope it isn't a problem with the camera as someone suggested, it would be much worse. Re: My DS and Sandisk Ultra II SD cards - incompatible somehow?
My DS had a problem with SanDisk cards too, although they worked in the camera, I was unable to read them in my USB card reader. I thought the first card was a dud so I got it replaced, same problem with the new one, however. Changed to a Kingston card that worked fine.
