Hi! You live half way across the country from Haifa. It's difficult for you to get there. I have to ask: did you take numerous shots of this scene with slightly different framing, different lenses, standing in different place? Just curious if this was the best one. I made two attempts, well actually three but two of them were stitching oriented. This one seems to be the better one. I have little experience with panoramas... I think I can count number of times I tried to produce one with fingers on just one of my two hands. I should also say it is rather different seeing the image before I am at home in front of my PC doing the stitching... I think one can say I am getting spoiled with instant review ability of my camera. -- Boris

Still not that pleased with the camera, more so the medium. It's doing the job however I am still shitty about the AOV limitations. I know what you mean, Rob. This issue hasn't been as much of a problem for me yet as I thought it would be, but I've only had the istD for a couple of weeks. Right now I've got my sights on the Sigma EX 12-24/4.5-5.6, unless something better comes along by the time I get around to buying it. What I'm enjoying is the relative low noise in high ISO images, this is something I've not had before and it's let me shoot a whole lot more macro under available light which is by far my preference. Tell me about it! I took a bunch of shots yesterday morning at ISO 1600 by accident, and I couldn't believe how crisp they were. The backgrounds were a little noisy but the foregrounds were nice and sharp.

It should be pretty easy to make room by removing your longest lens. For instance if you used to carry something like: 28, 50, 85, 135, 200 now you can carry something like 20, 28, 50, 85, 135 I don't like that the *ist D forced me to rethink some of my lens collection because of the new AOV, but it hasn't changed too much what I carry. The people who get hurt the most are those who liked to carry two lenses, 28-70 and 70-200. With the *ist D you get 16-45 but nothing to fill in the long end. Hopefully a DA 40-160 or 35-135 or something like that is coming. alex
Trip report
Hi Team, Just arrived back from a short (2400km 9 day) road trip to the north of the state (NSW) and I've almost ploughed through the 2000+ PDML messages that were awaiting my return. Fortunately due to the contents of quite a few of the threads bulk deleting was easy, boy I'm glad I missed that lot. This was my first extended trip shooting only digital in small format. I'm not missing film at all for this type of photography however I did still have a small 67 kit in tow when the right light and worthy scene presented its self. I took no computers as such, this was a holiday, the last thing I wanted to see was a computer. So I used my X-Drive to DL the images as the cards filled or at the end of every day (whichever came first). I engaged in not editing or deletion, everything was copied to the portable drive then the cards were dutifully erased. I used the review functions primarily only for exposure confirmation and as metering for my medium format film shots. When I arrived home down-loading the X-Drive and thumb-nailing the images seemed like a very similar experience to laying film images out on a light table, just faster and less costly. I had forgotten a lot of what I had shot and was pleasantly surprised. I shot probably just a little more than I would have when shooting film but I've never been too conservative there either. The extra shots were generally a product of a little auto-bracketing for insurance and some pano experiments. I shot very little 120 film, in fact only one roll but then again I was rarely at the right place in the best light as the trip was a little rushed and not primarily a photo-expedition so I feel exonerated :-) You will probably see some of the images as PAW over then next few weeks. Well, my week long photo excursion is over, and I had a blast. Of course you did, you got to see me. :) Ate some bad food. Your one lucky guy aren't you? Grandfather is a great place to shoot. If you can get there, you should definitely check it out. You could incorporate it into a trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway, or spend several days in the area. If you get there, go to the lunch room and have the BBQ sandwich and the vegetable soup. Admire the stamina of the cinnamon bear. Stand on top of McCrae Peak in 80 mph wind. I'd recomend the chicken Salad, it's wonderful. Oh and Tom will give you his pickle if he hears you ask for it. You could turn red if you watched the cinnamon bear . Nothing like the top of McCrae peak. Just watch getting down. I'm telling you, if you haven't ever hung out and shot with good photographers, you should. Just being around these guys is highly motivating and instructional. Tom fits in with them also. I am amazed at the stuff I learned just hanging out with them. After that, we headed back down, but found that jeepgirl hadn't shown up yet. We were a bit concerned since the gates were locked, so I tried calling the number she had given me. Turned out to be her Mom. Mom and I had a little talk, and I found out she wasn't due until the next day. Mom said I was pretty polite, as internet stalkers go. That's what my Sister said about you too. At some point Bill Owens showed up with his charming wife Phyllis. He gave me a beer, so we're friends for life. I think you just want more beer So the next day rolled around, and Bill took us to a stream he knew about. We shot for a while...I think someone may have fallen in. Luckily the borrowed MZ-S and FA 400/5.6 didn't get wet... Serves you right for not sharing At that point, I had a BBQ sandwich. Jeepgirl showed up that night safe and semi-sound. You just aint right. She brought her cousin Jessica, and a bunch of us hung out and talked about this and that. A good time was had. He failed to mention that he scared the crap out of me when he came stalking up to the tent at some ungodly hour to get me out of my warm sleeping bag just so he could have the pleasure of meeting me. The next day we got up at 4:45...I dragged jeepgirl and Jessie up the mountain to try and get some sunrise shots, but it was so foggy you couldn't see more then about 10 feet. So we found Doug and another friend and headed down to McDonalds. Again, more talking, and before we knew it 3 hours had passed. Everyone seemed to click, and enjoyed each other's company. Or maybe it was just those delicious McMuffins casting their spell. I don't know. I really enjoyed Dougs company that morning. He's a cool guy. About this time the photography weekend proper was about to start, so we headed back, got Jeepgirl and Jessie registered (I didn't enter the contest since I was helping) and went out to shoot. I had it in mind a PDMLer should win, so I served as Jeepgirl and Jessie's personal coach. We ran here and there, and they didn't seem too irritated to have me along, though that could be because I have a fisheye. And a ton of patience. At that point, I had another BBQ sandwich. uhhmmm I belive it was 2 sandwiches. That night (Friday) Doug gave his talk. He's a good speaker, and has a bunch of nice stuff we haven't seem here on the PDML before. He also made a point to be extra thankful for the PDMLers that showed up...Jeepgirl and I wept openly. I think Bill may have actually sobbed out loud. Everyone was impressed and proud. Doug's a good guy, and a good photographer. Wow is all I have to say. Doug is truly amazing. Makes some nice photo's also. His hair looked great, btw. Hey Doug, who cuts your hair. Let's see...we went back to camp after that, hung out for a bit, drank some of Bill's beer and went to sleep. Jessie forgot to tell us she's only 19, so the NC police (pronounced pO-lice) may be looking for me for alcohol violations. Jessie wants to know why you tell everything you know? The next day I had gate duty at 0-dark-thirty. I opened the entry gate, and decided to open the exit gate just in case someone needed to leave. Everyone ignored me and drove in through the exit gate. I cursed them. He cursed them for the rest of the day. Jeepgirl showed up for a minute to beg for a lens. A good lens will get you through times of no man better then a good man will get you through times of no lens. (originally a jeep quote.) When gate duty was over, Jeepgirl found me and we headed out again. They each had about 10 frames left for the contest, so we chased the fog around, trying to get some of those god-rays on film. I have a lot to learn about shooting god-rays. It was time for a BBQ sandwich, so I had one. Or 2. I ate a chicken sandwich it was better, And I got an extra Pickle that time too. 2 o'clock rolled around, and it was time to hand the film in. We crossed our fingers

Just to throw some proper spin on Tom's report, I offer the following observations: And I am spinning your observations now. Beware of North Carolinians bearing Diet Dr. Peppers. I thought they were good as far as Diet drinks go. After failing in his bid to shock any innocent coeds wandering past the creek on the edge of campus by channeling Johnny Weismuller, Tom apparently then decided to catch up on his laundry one outfit at a time. Why are there no pictures of this. Kodiak, the cinnamon bear, =is= worthy of admiration. he's the bear My hair looked great, btw. You think? If you ever find yourself on the same program with Tony Sweet, bring your good stuff, and prepare to be humbled anyway. You were wonderful too. Jeepgirl really has a Jeep. It's not a =real= Jeep, though, because it has an automatic transmission. Ignoring the automatic transmission it isn't a real jeep because it's a wrangler, not a cj. Brian Setzer works the breakfast shift at the MacDonald's in Banner Elk, NC. And you are telling me this, becuase Tom and Jeepgirl were married in an earlier life. In Tom's dreams... John DeLoach is a funny guy. Wonderfully funny. Mark Roberts has the oddest New York accent I've ever heard. Must be all that running. I didn't notice. On Equipment: The MZ-S with BG-10 grip attached seriously kicks ass. I ran several rolls of film through it, and had a good time. I really enjoyed this camera also, I had to fight with Tom so I could borrow his. And every second I did was a joy to me. Anyone who has ever seen my cameras can tell I don't care much how they look, but the MZ-S/BG-10 with the FA35/2AL attached is one good looking package. It feels good too. All in all, it was a great weekend. I really enjoyed meeting and hanging out with other PDML members, and I think Pentax was well-represented amongst the infidels. We're already working on next year's program, so start planning that time off now. First weekend after Mother's Day. Too bad Shel isn't around, that's another plus for APX 25 - it doesn't fog even with a minute under the safelight. Re: Trip Report
Cool to see PDML people getting together. That must have been fun! In my trip to Italy last May my wife and I got to meet Flavio and Gianfranco. In both cases we clicked immediatly (either that or they were polite enough to make us feel that way :-), and we spent some most excellent time together. Great way to make new friends and to put a face on the names you see every day! j -- --- Juan J. Trip Report
Well, my week long photo excursion is over, and I had a blast. Did some shooting in Shenandoah and Grayson Highlands before heading down to Grandfather Mt., shooting some ladyslippers I'd found in addition to the ponies. Spent some time on back roads shooting barns and farmland. Ate some bad food. Pulled in Wednesday, and I was the first one there, so I tooled around and saw what I could see. Doug showed up a few hours later, then, I think, Tony Sweet. Around sunset we headed up towards the top for some pics. I'm telling you, if you haven't ever hung out and shot with good photographers, you should. Just being around these guys is highly motivating and instructional. After that, we headed back down, but found that jeepgirl hadn't shown up yet. We were a bit concerned since the gates were locked, so I tried calling the number she had given me. That night Tony Sweet gave his lecture. He's the man. http://www.tonysweetphotography.com/ That was the night we took the lighthouse pictures, plus a PDML group photo. I might have that ready tomorrow. You'll have to wait for jeepgirl to get back to see the lighthouse pics. The next morning the film came back, Doug and Tony judged them, and Jessie got an honorable mention. Jeepgirl got robbed, so I let the air out of Doug's tires and I did some more cursing. The winning photos were very impressive. At that point, the weekend was over, more or less. Hugs and kisses, buh-bye. I have to admit that on the way down, I felt just a twinge of trepidation. What if Doug turned out to be an anti-social geek? What if Jeepgirl was really jeep-dirty-old-chatroom-trolling-dude? What if Bill Owens was one of those southern guys who make their own alcoh...uh, nevermind. Anyway, you never
My trip report to Camera Show in Puyallup, WA
I just got back from the annual PSPCS camera show in Puyallup. About the same as last year, though less Pentax gear than I remember. I was shopping for odds and ends (lens caps and lens cases), and limited myself to cash on hand without credit (about $200). I picked up a couple of interesting items: a K2DMD brassed and in need of a CLA for $65, and a perfectly good MV1 with a mint M50/2.0 for $35. The K2DMD doesn't have its winder MD (anyone have one for sale or know where I can find one?). The MV1, on the other hand, is a great little SLR. With the M50/2 or an M35/2, it's only slightly larger than my T4, but much more fun. Who cares what the shutter speed is, as long as the light is green, and I have the aperture I want. :) It evens uses a winder MEII from my ME Super (unlike the ubiquitous MV). My other find was a vivitar 3x M42 tc. After getting home, I dragged out my 500 tele, hooked up the 3x, k-m42, and the MV1, and shot most of a roll this afternoon of airplanes on final approach to SeaTac and birds in tree tops. At 1500mm and f/13.5, I was getting the 747s to fill the frame wing tip to wing tip, and based on where the red meter light came on (above 1/1000s), I was shooting around 1/500 to 1/1000 with the lens set to f/5.6 or f/8 (f/16.8 or f/24 effective) with Supra 400. I thought about adding my 2x too, but figured I couldn't see to focus at that point (3000mm f/27). Last interesting item I got was a pair of LX strap connectors. These are hard to find, and 2 of the 3 LXs for sale in the place had them. I finally talked one of the vendors out of his for $25. I had thought with the recession America is in, that there'd be more deals, but instead it was a lot of picked over antiques from previous years, and very little good Pentax glass (rather disappointing in that respect). There must be more users/collectors of Pentax than a couple of years ago. Cheers, Gerald - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
