SPESO: "What is it"

2020-07-29 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Just in case (you might have googled it already): It is a Seattle-based
crab fisshing vessel.

http://www.kiskasea.com
https://www.facebook.com/FVKiskaSea/
I am curious how they came up with that name.

Fun fact: "Kiska" in Russian means "kitty".
It is also used as an endearment to kids and women (in the 3rd or 2nd
person).

Also, it is a vulgar/slang word for female genital.

I've just found that in Hindi, "kiska" means "whose":
https://www.quora.com/What-does-kiska-mean-in-Hindi

So, Larry, maybe you should've asked "Whose it is?" ;-)

Igor

PS. An old real story told by one of the participants:
There was some cultural event (on a ship cruise, if I remember correctly)
with youths from the UK and Russia. Someone's cat ran away and was
hiding. People from England started calling the cat: "Pss! Pss!"
Russians were laughing: that's what they tell a toddler sitting on a potty
to initiate the process.
Then Russians started helping, calling the cat, now with the Brits'
turn to laugh, as the calling sound was "Kis-kis-kiss!"

I have it on an Olympus Pen F and love it. So much so that I'm considering an

I'm really enjoying the M43 concept. I can easily get my head around the

I really like the way the flip-out screen on the K-1 works.

I rarely use Live View, but the few times I have used it the articulating screen

I frequently use the K-1’s articulated screen. All magazine art directors want
the long lens ground level front 3/4 shot of race cars, exotics and muscle
cars. With the flip up screen I no longer have to get down on the ground, a
maneuver that grows more difficult with every passing year.

I don't know, I think I'd buy it, a flippy screen is just something else
to break, though I can see it's usefulness in some circumstances.

The new Prism looks like it could be duplicated by just using a O-ME53

Probably not the highest viewfinder magnification, but good enough.

I wouldn't mind mirrorless with its inherent light weight, but with all
my Pentax lenses I'm hesitant to change brands.
And it is so useful now to be able to switch lenses of FF and APS-C in
the Pentax system without any converters.
The K-1 is a perfect camera but not for carrying on long walks if
combined with a tele.
As a walk-around camera I much like my K-5 with a small lens as the DA
21/3.2,  but the fixed back screen is sometimes a handicap.
A compact APS-C with improved sensor and flip-out screen would therefore
be on my wish list for Santa Claus.
In fact both K-70 and KP are good choices and we haven't seen yet what
the new flagship has more to offer than a better prisma and two card slots.

A flip out screen is extremely useful in taking pictures of flowers and
mushrooms or critters close to the ground. Also for landscapes when on a
tripod.

For me this is one of the most valued features of my K-1.

I don't know, I think I'd buy it, a flippy screen is just something else
to break, though I can see it's usefulness in some circumstances.

The new Prism looks like it could be duplicated by just using a O-ME53
which I've been using since I got my *ist-Ds.  It's not perfect but it
does give a view pretty close to an LX with a standard prism finder.
Probably not the highest viewfinder magnification, but good enough.

I'm just glad that they haven't abandoned the high end APS-C DSLR segment.

There is a follow-up video from Ricoh/Pentax.
The new APS-C is claimed to have a new penta-prism, improved grip, new shutter,
better image quality and also a silver model (also for star lenses and K-1 mark
II)
No details on date of introduction.
I still have no clue on whether the back LCD panel is fixed or not.

Thanks Paul.

This morning I cycled to the other side of the river to have a cup of tea (I
brought my own) at a safe distance from an Italian friend who has been feeling
extremely anxious about all this and barely going out.

2020-03-16 Thread John
It's not general delivery like we get during the week, they only go to specific
houses.

I think it has something to do with a contract the Postal Service has with
UPS/FedEx to handle the final mile of deliveries.

But I don't think that's who he was barking at, 'cause I could hear kids playing
outside.

waits for me to sit down so he can get into my lap.

Right now, he's in the living room barking at the mailman through the front

2020-03-15 Thread John

I like the calculating expression on her face.

"How many nom-noms will you give me to let you sit here?"

Prince does that too. Just as soon as I get up for any reason, he hops up on my
"work" chair. He usually gets down as soon as I come back into the room & waits
for me to sit down so he can get into my lap.

Right now, he's in the living room barking at the mailman through the front
door. The mailman doesn't deliver on Sunday, but Prince doesn't know that.

2019-12-01 Thread Rob Studdert
I'm late to the party but I'll chime in, much like Doug my income is
highly variable these days (photography being what it is) but still I
value the work-flow inherent in LR enough to submit to their
ransom-ware tactics (which I loathe). I stay within LR for most of my
edits if possible and venture out to PS only when absolutely
necessary, all my images are accessible via a single catalogue (as I
am regularly required to delve into past shoots) and it's currently
sitting at just shy of 600k images without a hitch.

In the last year I've also been running an Xtouch Mini MIDI mixer via
MIDI2LR to facilitate direct control of my major adjustments and image
selection and this has significantly increased the pace of my
work-flow when managing larger shoots.

2019-11-23 Thread Postmaster
Larry, I bought the last non-ransomware version of Lightroom and
didn't bother even installing until almost two years later! The
"dehaze" tool was a useful addition but other than that it didn't have
anything to recommend it over previous versions as far as I'm
concerned. I can't see any reason to upgrade further, myself.

If you really need better HDR and panorama tools you'll get better
results with specialized third-party applications and probably save
money, too. Photomatix Pro is the benchmark for HDR and it's only
$99.00 and worth twice that, at least.

There are several panorama apps that better Pholtoshop and Lightroom
for prices between $30 and $100.

Lightroom 6.14 runs okay on MacOS Mojave. It runs “ok” on Catalina also, as
long as you installed Catalina over an existing Mojave system with LR already
installed. It’s the Adobe installer/license management app that doesn’t run on
Catalina preventing LR 6 installation.

My solution to this and other future Adobe nonsense is to freeze my 2012 Mac

existing LR work. I purchased a new 2019 Mac mini with far more processing
power and RAM that came preinstalled with Catalina, and am building a new Adobe

I see no purpose to moving backwards to assure compatibility with already

HDR and panorama functions don't do anything for me whatsoever. I don't
use face recognition or GPS info because I know who it is and where I am
most of the time.

Having said that, I use LR Classic and gladly pay the monthly because
it's as much a part of my photography as my cameras, electricity, and
bills for studio time, and my income is likely at this point in time
more uncertain than yours.

99% of my editing is LR, with the periodic visit to PS for layers or a
more molecular edit if necessary, maybe a content-aware fill here and
there, but the cataloging function and workflow ecosystem of LR is
arguably more important to me.

I can't tell you what features of the program are going to be important
enough to you to justify the cost. I can say that a few bucks a month is
easier for me to cover than the full price package, so I live with it in
order to stay functional and on top of the very many moving parts of my
current work.

cool, HDR and panoramas. The face recognition is kind of nifty, but not as
nifty as character recognition would be. They also work pretty well, but have

Are there any absolutely must have features of the current lightroom that would

I keep getting those "Your software isn't optimized..." messages since I
upgraded to Mojave, so I guess I'd lose a few essential pieces of

I'm still using Microsoft Expression Media 2 for cataloguing and
browsing my audio files (recorded soundscapes, not music) and can't find

So, I'm afraid I and many of us will be stuck with Mojave for a long

That depends on what *you* must have...

To me, the library side is at least as important as the RAW development.
Also, I have 'bought' Lightroom Classic because the map function in LR6
was broken and I use it to quickly find out what photos I have from a
particular location when I want to illustrate one of my blog posts.
Next, I'd hate to be without lens profiles. And lastly LR not only
accepts RAW but also TIFF which is the format of my film scans. These
are my must haves, yours may differ.

You might want to have a look at RAW Power. It offers about 90 percent
of the functionality of Lightroom at a fraction of the price. I even
doubt that I had bought Lightroom Classic if I'd been aware of RAW Power
at the time.

Cool, thanks. I just looked at it. Unfortunately my main machine (early 2009
mac pro) won’t run the 64 bit OS, and On 1 2020 won’t run on the earlier OSX.

Moving to On1 would mean investing in a new computer, which isn’t in my budget
this week. Mind you a modern mac that would support internal drives won’t be
available for a while, and when it is the buy in for a new mac pro would be
far beyond my personal budget.

I’m also planning on looking at darktable, which has the advantage of also
running on Linux. A Linux box would be a lot more affordable than a mac pro
and a lot more user friendly than Windows.

want to be committed to paying an annual ransom to not be locked out of working
on my photos. I just haven’t had time to try out alternatives to lightroom and
make the switch. LR 6 had a couple of new features that I considered pretty
cool, HDR and panoramas. The face recognition is kind of nifty, but not as
nifty as character recognition would be. They also work pretty well, but have
enough shortcomings that I’m not entirely happy with them.

Are there any absolutely must have features of the current lightroom that would
make it worth $120 per year? Mind you I have practically no interest in photo
shop, certainly not enough to pay any extra for it.

Side question. I’ve got what I want on an external drive and I’d love to just
copy that over, but if I boot off the external drive, migration assistant won’t
seem to just transfer everything to the recently formatted internal drive, so
I’m doing the long slow installation of High Sierra, which is going to take 2
hours, before I can even start the copy of data off the external drive.

Is there a quicker way to do this that I’m missing?

are the excessive cost of a college education and the amount of debt many

Difficult to make much of it when referring to such a short article big on
headline but low on detail.

I haven't read anything else recently which highlights a problem in UK
universities.

As far as I am aware, the UK has some of the top universities int he world, and
I haven't heard of or worked on any news stories recently which echo the
sentiment in the article

On 25/8/19, mike wilson, discombobulated, unleashed:

>No subscription - no read. Very liberal.

Strange, I had no problem reading it.

Reproduced below...

The UK's reputedly world-class higher education sector has long been a source
of pride and consolation for a diminished power. At first glance, universities
have relentlessly expanded without any reduction in standards. Since 1990, the
number of undergraduate degrees awarded has increased fivefold, while the
proportion of Firsts granted has quadrupled. But this facade of success masks
profound and long-standing problems. In this week's cover story, Harry Lambert
exposes what we call "the great university con". For decades, successive
governments have systematically undermined the value and prestige of a British
degree as education has been forced to operate under market conditions.

In a 2016 OECD study, which assessed basic skill levels among recent graduates
from 23 countries, England ranked in the bottom third. In spite of spending
about £21,000 per student (more than any country except the United States),
England's skill levels are around three times worse than the top eight
countries (which spend around £15,000 per student). One in two recent British
graduates is not in graduate work, a rate that has consistently risen since
2001.

The purpose of university expansion, pursued by both Conservative and Labour
governments, was once a noble one. Lionel Robbins, a professor at the London
School of Economics, and the author of the 1963 report on higher education,
emphasised that "the standard traditionally attached to the term 'degree' in
this country will be fully maintained".

But it has not been. On 12 July, faced with the number of students achieving
"good honours" - a First or 2:1 - rising from 47 per cent in 1994 to 79 per
cent, Damian Hinds, the former education secretary, emphasised that "artificial
grade inflation is not in anyone's interests". And yet, as Harry Lambert
writes, the "perverse incentives" imposed by the state have made this a logical
outcome.

In common with so many current issues, the origins of today's problems go back
to the market turn of the 1980s. The 1985 Jarratt Report declared that
"universities are first and foremost corporate enterprises" and inaugurated a
trend of continual marketisation. As students were rebranded as "customers",
institutions sought less to test them than to appease them. Grade inflation -
designed to boost universities' league table standing - has followed.

Subsequent reforms have merely compounded the problem. The decision by the
2010-15 coalition government largely to abolish direct state funding for
university teaching (replaced by tuition fees of £9,000) introduced a system in
which money "followed the student", creating an additional incentive to
manipulate standards and results.

The British higher education system retains some formidable strengths and the
benefits of a university experience extend far beyond the awarding of a degree.
The stereotype of students as indolent hedonists is undeserved (indeed, data
suggests they have seldom been more abstemious). But grade inflation and the
unqualified expansion of universities should end. For too long, the higher
education sector has allowed its reputation to obscure a mediocre reality.
British students - who now pay the developed world's highest public university
fees - deserve much better.

Best guess I can come up with based on searching the internet for five toed

I looked up some prints online and it certainly looks like skunk from what
I read..

"Skunks have five toes on their hind and front feet. Unlike most mammal
that have large hind feet, and small
front feet the front and hind feet of the skunk are approximately the same
size. They also have claws that show up in many of their prints."

Yes, all the same, and all in a straight line. There are some coyotes in
the wooded area behind my house, but they generally don’t come very close.

Thanks Ann. Skunk is quite likely. The claws aren’t visible, but the dusting of
snow that partially covered the track may have obscured them.

Can you show a group of them? An otter's tail would drag in the snow, and for
that matter its belly.
