Pretty much everything I do in B&W is 11x14. Sometimes larger.
Only smaller if it is for a specific project requiring a smaller
print. Most all of my B&W work is done on 4x5, including studio
portraiture. If I need a faster handling camera, I use the 6x7.
I have even used the 4x5 for outdoor wedding portraiture in
black and white. The couple loved the entire experience of being
photographed in such a leisurely manner.
Thanks

Rostered on 36.5 hours per week but with overtime bumps up to about 50

Depends what you mean. Do you mean each and every day? Or do you
mean, on those days one is out taking photos, how long? I'm not in a
position to take photos each day, but on weekends, I literally have a
camera with me at all times when I'm out of the house (during daylight
hours). So, on weekends, around 6 hours average per day, for a total
of 12 per week (more if I'm taking during the evening) so let's round
it up to 14 per week, for two hours per day average.

> (2) how meany frames do you take (on average) per day?

It varies wildly. I can go on a long walkabout and shoot a couple or
less, or, I can go out for 1/2 hour and shoot a roll, if something
catches my fancy. Let's say a total of 2 rolls a week on average, for
about 10 frames a day.

> (3) how much time do spend on the list(on average) per day?

Maybe an hour

> (4) how meany posts do you submit (on average) per day?

It's been low lately, but I'd say minimum 6 per day, sometimes much
more (if I have the time).

That's a lot of questions :-).

Here goes:
Taking pictures: 0,5-7 hours
Average amount of frames: 100 (over the last 3 months)
On the list: 0,5 hours
Number of submissiones i average: (this could actually be measured) 3, I
guess
Time spent on other photogtraphyy-realated stuff: 1

Yes, this is a time consuming occupation. I recently delivered 3 CD's with
photographs for a planning publication, which takes a lot of pressure off my
shoulders right now. I'll probably be photographing less than 100 fpd for
the next month or two.

Weekend survey

2004-05-21 Thread Markus Maurer

To sweeten your weekend, I have two questions for you (and yes, the results
of the opinion poll will be published here)

1 Which 3 photos you made are your most loved ones?
1b is it for their content or the circumstances of the taking or anything
else?

2 Are these photos of private affair showing for example members your family
or not?
2b Would you publish them for us ? If yes, with a link :-)

3 feel free to add any impressive or strange stories about taking the
shoots.

Some of the photos I really love are of private nature when I was at the
age of 17-20.
I had two engagements as a seaman on Swiss freight ships worldwide and took
my first photos on sea in 1977 with
a Olympus XA compact camera. When the ship came into dock in Hong Kong the
second time I worked as sailor in 1981,
I bought my first Pentax ME super. I took a lot of pictures of the crew at
work and gave the photos to them
Most of the negatives have suffered severely and are unusable in between due
to humidity and false storage :-(
So I am left with about 10 enlargements from that time, some show the
"seamen baptized" and hair cropping all over :-)

thanks
Markus

DIGITAL SURVEY

2007-11-19 Thread Cotty
Must be about time for one.

Actually I was reading something on a different list about expectations
and fulfilments with regard to DSLR cameras. No need to be precise about
brands here, it can be any DSLR, but please limit to this sort of
digital camera (with interchangable lens facility) - so no P&S or
anything esle.

Purpose? To help inform my suspicions...

1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?

2/ How many have you owned in the past?

3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?

4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR camera?

5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?

6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the latest) ?

7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?

8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you buy it?

9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you consider your current or latest model
'obsolete' ?

10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or not) 'obsolete'?

11/ Have you ever had sex with a bicycle? (You don't have to answer
this. In fact, better if you don't).

Personal summary of results in a week.

PDML survey

2003-10-05 Thread Simon King
Hi All,
I didn't read my email over the weekend as I was out updating my portfolio
of local prostitutes, but I see that the whole survey question has spun off
to several threads. Even though I think it's a fun idea, I'm not going to
pursue it for the following reasons;

1. Technical
As I have said, I don't know how to gather the information anonymously, but
with authentication. I could learn how to, but as this is the only time I
could ever imagine using the skill, it doesn't seem worth it. As a manager I
just have the ideas and get my staff to do them. This is a mailing list, so
it would be up to someone to volunteer to produce it.

2. Motive
Some members of the list who I respect have suggested that the only use for
the information would be for nefarious purposes. I completely disagree, but
even if there's the perception that the data was being collected for less
than salubrious reasons, it'd rather not be involved. Australians seem to
love reading survey and poll results. Our tabloid newspapers and magazines
are full of them - many of which is are of questionable value, and certainly
not statistically reliable. Still, they are veraciously read by the public.
Maybe this interest isn't so for the rest of the world.

3. Deciding on the wording
This list constantly amazes me - what I though of as a simple question
relating to sex/gender spawned a whole thread. The capacity for PDML members
to argue and discuss the most arcane topics both baffles and amuses me,
whether it be LPMM or Bokeh or Art (I think a good definition of art is "The
PDML has raised the level of picayune discussion to a fine art"). Now don't
get me wrong - I mostly enjoy a lot of these threads.
So if the first question was a problem, where does that leave the more
complex questions. For Pet, I though of "Dog/Cat/Other" as there have been
many posts about these animals. I'd hazard a guess that there'd be some
argument over even that (and Cotty probably has some sort of home made
FrankenPet, half Persian grey, half Alsatian with a K-Mount at one end and a
Canon L at the other).

So if anyone else would like to set up a survey I'd be a willing and keen
participant, but for now I'm going to start on my PUG comments.
Cheers,
Simon

Serendipity survey

2002-04-24 Thread Paul F. Stregevsky

I'd like to start what I hope will be an intriguing thread:

As photographers, we've all known our share of bad luck. But sometimes we
are visited by a stroke of timely good luck, otherwise called serendipity.

For example, when The Bridge Over the River Kwai (spelling?) was being
filmed, the camera was trained on an aimed rifle, when a butterfly lit on
the barrel. The film captures the landing and the dutifully surprised look
on the face of the actor.

What have been your most serendipitous photographic moments?

Please include moments that happened "only because I happened to be
carrying my camera." It's OK to help make your own luck.

Serendipity survey

2002-04-25 Thread oscar . 7300

Last fall, I was driving home from work with a clear
view of downtown New York. I saw a rainbow that
appeared to begin where the WTC had stood until only a
month or two before. It was so clear that I couldn't
believe that other cars weren't pulling over to look at
it. I pulled over and was happy I had a camera in the
car. No film in the camera. But there's usually a roll
or two in the car somewhere, even if only because it
fell out of a bag. I searched the car from top to
bottom. No luck. By then, the rainbow was fading
anyway.

Serendipity lost, I guess. But perhaps for the best.
The image would have been a bit of a cliche that was no
match for the tragedy to which it referred.

In the darkroom darkroom, I start at 8x10 and then anything I find that
I'm really liking moves to 11x14 or 16x20. In digital land I tend to go
for the big prints right away, since I can check all the picky little
details on screen at various sizes before I make the print (and when the
paper is on a 24" roll it seems like such a waste to print teeny little
8x10s in the middle of it).

I'm sure that if I had a regular job, complete with commute,
as opposed to working from home, I could push that mobility
score up another notch or two

The test claims the average for the US is 24 acres/person,
so even at 26 I'm only a little higher than the national
average. And much of my score comes from housing; I have
a 2300 sq. ft. house (with running water, electricity, etc.)
that's shared by only two people.

FOOD
 6.9

MOBILITY
 7.7

SHELTER

Some times you can go back and some times you can't. I think my Mother won
this originally in a raffle and passed it straight onto me. By then I had
the MX and preferred using it and I ended up swapping it for some golf
equipment. Recently, I decided that a small camera was a great thing for the
car or jacket and bought one on impulse on eBay. But I much prefer the MX
and 40mm lens. I thought the O. Trip would be brilliant, but for me, it's
not. No one is more surprised at this than me! There is a car I sold 15
years ago I deeply regret selling and have tried on 4 occasions to get a
similar replacement, without success

Canon T90... Yes, the ultimate screw mount camera. A SMC-Takumar
with the Canon adapter acts like a Canon lens in that you don't have
to take out the adapter from the lens (you do on a Pentax K body
unless you modify the mount). T90 has Spot TTl flash metering etc...
I also let go an Angenieux 35-70mm f2.3-2.?, a low-flare lens, not
far behind SMC zooms.

Re: Fryday Survey

2004-04-23 Thread Joe Wilensky
Yes, what is it about the SF1n/SFXn? It seems so clunky and
first-generation autofocus, and yet it seems wonderfully capable. The
autofocus actually works very well in most situations, and even
without the autofocus turned on, it seems like a _really_ capable
Super Program + grip/winder, except more ergonomic and more fun to
use (plus the built-in flash!) It has exposure lock (though you have
to keep the button pressed down) and nice top-of-the-line features
like the three-shot self timer. Also, why is it that only the SF1/PZ
models allowed auto bracketing up to +/- 4 stops? The later cameras
only do 1 or 2 stops (sometimes only +/- 2 stops in exposure
compensation, too). Oh, and you can get the AA battery grip for the
SF1/SF1n, which is not an option with the PZ series.

And is it my imagination, or is manual focusing with the SFXn
viewfinder/screen actually more pleasant than with the PZ-1/PZ-1p or
ZX/MZ models? Is this because the eyepiece is actually made of SMC
glass and not plastic? I can't believe the PZ-1p screen is less
pleasureable to focus on, but this seems so (standard screens that
came with the cameras, in both cases).

I suppose this means I regret selling my SFX, though I have recently
picked up an SF1n. I also sold a beautiful ME Super SE, though I
really never used it as much as I would have liked.

Joe

new condion except it had the dreaded "sticky meter switch"
syndrome which I didnt know at the time could be fixed with
a simple CLA. I thought something was broken. Only got about
$75 for it.

Other than that, I have been very happy with my photographic
eqiupment trading in terms of selling. But this brings up the
converse, WHAT PHOTO EQUIPMENT DO YOU REGRET NOT BUYING?

The one that sticks out in my mind is I was offered a Fujinon
85mm F4 soft focus lens in M42 for $80 mint and at the time I
was strictly a Pentax man so I hesitated. I came to my senses
the next day and went back/tried to buy it but it was gone. I cant
seem to forget about that blunder Not that I would ever
use them, I once had the opportunity to buy an entire box
full of koni-omega film backs for $10 at a flea market. There must
have been 30 of them. But I never heard of that camera and
passed, I later found out they were worth way more than that,
but that would have only been a money deal, not a collectable deal
like the fujinon was. Still dont have a soft focus M42 lens and
that was like 15 years ago.

bodies is 2 MXs, Super Program, SF-1, PZ-1p, MZ-S, and the *ist-D.
That's another seven. I've never actually used the SF-1 (it was a gift
from a neighbour when he switched to a Nikon digital point-and-shoot),
and I doubt if I'll ever use the Super Program again. But I expect
I'll continue to use an MX occasionally - I've owned one on them for
almost 28 years. I'll keep the others (PZ-1p & MZ-S) for the occasional
roll of film, and as backups at least until I get a second digital body.
I doubt if I'll sell them, even then - they won't be worth all that much.

I've also got a half-plate stereo camera which I keep saying I'm going
to get refurbished "one of these days". I've been saying that for over
thirty years

Only one, and for a reason I haven't seen anyone else use yet.
I wished I hadn't sold my KX (which I didn't like) because just a few months
later my Dad bought himself a K1000 from a camera store. I think the KX
would've suited him better, so I wish I'd had it available to sell to him.

I regret buying a P30 to use as backup for my Super A. It lasted about
6 months before I went out and bought another SuperA. I ended up
swapping it for a macro focussing rail.

I'm more than happy with the swap as I still use the focusing rail, but
have now ended up with a P30t (as part of a group purchase on eBay - I
wanted the 28mm shift lens) which I never wanted and have to get rid
of.

Anyone willing to pay US$60 including shipping worldwide for a P30t?

I think I'll nominate a camera kit. The Contax G2, the lenses were excellent
but the camera hoovered, particularly the focus system and finder. But I got
out of it without too much skin off so I'm not bitter and twisted :-)

Wow, is AF of that much consequence with this length of lens? I've been using
mine quite successfully with the *ist D and I suspect that in the situation
that it may be useful the AF would probably fail, its AF performance hasn't
instilled be with confidence to this point.

Two LXen. Didn't use them much, never got to like them, and lost big
on the resale. They just didn't suit me at all, from the off-balance
strap configuration to the flash problems to the loud shutter to the
many, many repair needs. All the hoopla about the OTF metering
sounded good, but in real life I wasn't used to setting the camera on
auto, and when I did it incorrectly exposed just as often as any other
center-weight meter, although it has some theoretical advantage if the
light is very low or changed at the instant of exposure. For a good
manual Pentax camera, give me a PZ1p any day.

Tamron SP 35-105/2.8 manual focus. It was a nightware. The lens was
expensive (I was in Melbourne back then) and it was very soft wide open, and
reasonable at f5.6. It was great for portrait, but nothing else. Not to
mention the zooming acting was a pain in the axx due to some lousy plastic
inner mechanisms which the service centre could do nothing about. Since then
I have owned prime lenses only.

Pentax A20/2.8

I'd bought the autofocus version, the FA20/2.8 instead.
They're the same lens optically, but the "A" version is much more
solidly built (and is actually more expensive). I never felt missed
autofocus on my film cameras but since this lens has the angle of view
of a 30mm when used on the DSLR, I'm finding myself wishing for AF
sometimes.
It's still a fabulous lens, though ;-)

1. Pentax SMC-FA 28-80/3,5-4,7 (Amazingly good, concidering the pricetag,
weight and powerzoom. It just isn't pro-quality).
2. Pentax SMC-F 70-210/4-5,6 (A poor lens compared to the earlier F version)

I bought them with my PZ-1 in 1992 and sold both of them 4 or 5 years ago. I
replaced them with:
Tokina ATX PRO II 2.6-2.8/28-70mm (got a bargain - new for 700$ - list price
1200$). It is almost as sharp as the original FA 2.8/28-70mm, which at the
time cost 2800$ in Denmark.
Pentax SMC F 4-5.6/70-210mm, which is a very good lens. Found it used like
new for 280$.

The Tokina 28-70mm is - together with my SMC A 2.8/20mm and my M*4/300mm -
my most used lenses.

Well, I bought mine two ears ago, and yes, I now want the AF version :-)

But it is still a great lens, and I´ve still got the LX (and ME Super),
but most important I´ve got some picture I am satisfied with the lens.

I think my priority will be the 14mm, as I miss the field of view.

Yes, I had this Tokina zoom once - I sold it with an ME-Super. I's not bad,
but kind of average I believe. It got very nice review when it was
introduced long ago, though. I guess it doesn't quite compare to the PRO II,
though.

About the Pentax 70-210mm. The FA (Power Zoom - made for PZ-1) is not so
good. The F (made for the SFX series) is excellent IMO.

RE: Saturday Survey

2004-04-25 Thread Jens Bladt
You might do some tests:
Shoot the same scene at different apertures using a sturdy tripod. Use slide
film to be able to compare the shots in, let's say, 1.8m 1.2m (50 times
enlargement) or even 100 times. Pick scenery with lots of detail. You can
cut the slides in halves and mount two comparable shots in one frame and
then view the slides from a distance using binoculars. That's how I tested
the Pentax SMC-FA 28-80/3,5-4,7 against the Tokina ATX Pro II
2.6-2.8/28-70mm. The latter was clearly sharper in this enlargement, which
BTW is confirmed by tests made by Photodo. In small enlergements it's not
posible to clearly see the difference. (That's how they get away with
selling poor lenses, I guess - it's difficult to tell the difference from a
4x6" print of a summer holliday shot!

What matters to me, are shots made under difficult circumstances, where I
have to push the limits of what is actually possible. That's when a good
lens makes the difference - weather I get a usable photograph or not!

Unlike most of the surveys that have been here before, when you ask which of
the photographs you have taken would be your most loved ones, really would
have no interest or impact on others; indeed they may well be technically
poor, but might have great meaning for the family or person involved only.

Before and after of the garden of our first house. Our first house was built
in 1976 and the people who first owned it were neither gardeners or in the
best health. When they sold the house to us in 1991, the garden had last
been mowed in 1979. The house was well cared for, but the garden, although
not that big, was a wilderness which was talked about (gardens are often a
sniffy subject in the UK). I am a bit of a gardener (my parents had a large
garden for London in which I learnt) and within 18 months, it had become a
well established and well kept typical family garden once more (as seen in
last months PUG).

See - I bet that has bored you rigid :-)

As you can notice, there's something odd in above figures, the higher ones

RE: DIGITAL SURVEY

2007-11-19 Thread Peter McIntosh
1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?

One - ist-DL

2/ How many have you owned in the past?

None - this is my first

3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?

Two or thereabouts

4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR camera?

See 3 above

5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?

Yes

6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the latest) ?

See 3 above

7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?

Yes

8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your current
or latest model, will you buy it?

Possibly. Will consider it if it provides substantial USABLE (to me)
improvements

9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your current
or latest model, will you consider your current or latest model 'obsolete' ?

No.

10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or not)
'obsolete'?

Definitely not. I'm still yet to use all of its capabilities. When I have
and find myself looking for something more that it can provide is when I'll
consider it obsolete.

11/ Have you ever had sex with a bicycle? (You don't have to answer this. In
fact, better if you don't).

Well, there's 14 bicycles in my garage now, and it all started with one...

In a message dated 11/19/2007 3:32:56 P.M. Pacific Standard Time,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?

3 - Canon 300D, Canon XT, Pentax K100D

2/ How many have you owned in the past?

1 - Canon 300D

3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?

3 years.

4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR camera?

3 years.

5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?

Pretty much, buffered filled up quick, but other than that, pretty much.

6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the latest) ?

1 month (XT) and about 6-8 months (K100D).

7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?

Yes and no, haven't used the XT that much yet. For me, since price is an
object, I have to compromise, so I do a lot of research and am pretty well
aware
what I get and what I will not get. In other words, I can't get the upper
end, anyway.

8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you buy it?

Depends. Size and weight is becoming increasing important to me. If the
Pentax next generation is a similar size or smaller to the K10D, then I might
get
it. OTOH, I tend to like to buy as much of my camera equipment used as I
can. I am curious to see what the next Digital Rebel will be like (the 40D is
too heavy for me) and I am curious what the K20D will be like (the K10D may be
too big for me). But instead I may just grab a 10D when the prices go down
after the new one is released. I really do like buying used and saving. This
is
just a hobby for me, and I feel I've already spent too much on it.

9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you consider your current or latest model
'obsolete' ?

No. Not for years, anyway. One can still get decent photos from a 6mp camera.

10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or not) 'obsolete'?

No. The write speed of the 300D was too slow though, which is why I finally
upgraded to the XT about a month ago. It's not a matter of obsolescence, it's
a matter of upgrades having some bells and whistles closer to what I wanted
in the first place.

11/ Have you ever had sex with a bicycle? (You don't have to answer
this. In fact, better if you don't).

Not intentionally.
