I've figured out all but one item on the body. Film speed and the meter switch were rather unique systems. Lift the SS dial turn it to set film speed. Big, big black button for the meter. I like the stop-down when firing system. Depress the button lightly it stops down. Depress it further to fire. The only unknown is the little button inside the film advance lever. Re: Anyone shoot MF exclusively?
An interesting concept. I've tended to use Medium for anything serious, but still film for 35mm snapshots, etc. My reasoning is, if it's worth pressing the button for, it's probably worth keeping. Medium Format is used for anniversaries and other memorable gatherings where the history of the event is desirable. That takes detail. (Right now my father-in-law, pro photographer, is partly engaged in the preservation of very old family shots. Trying to preserve even the detail of a face can be a lot of work. Better to have extra detail now than losing what little is there later.) I wouldn't drop 35mm. Maybe reduce its usage. My MF work was with the so-convenient Fuji FA645. A wonderful little tool. Hope these thoughts are useful. Collin -- From: Delano Mireles [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Anyone shoot MF exclusively? Hi all, I'm in the process of searching for a MF camera and was wondering if anyone here shoots MF exclusively? Trying to decide if I should ditch my ZX-5n, upgrade my digital olympus for snapshots and go MF for everything else. Re: debating on buying an mx....
Vlad, As I understand appropriate behavior: When the switch is in Lock position, nothing should happen when pressing the button. When the switch is NOT in the Lock position, AND the film advance is IN (beside the body) THEN meter only comes on with slight depressing of the shutter release. When the switch is NOT in the Lock position, AND the film advance is OUT (away from the body) THEN meter only comes on with slight depressing of the shutter release and stays on. When there is wear to the lock mechanism the meter may (1) activate when in LOCK position (2) automatically activate when taken out of LOCK (3) stay on when shutter release is depressed, no matter the film advance position. Re: drying FB prints...
I found a simple method. Just arch a piece of poster board. Use a couple strips of duct tape to hold across the ends. Staple it if you wish to. Tape down a paper towel. Make a loop paper towel to go around the unit. Lay your print onto the arch, with a paper towel in between. Flex it poster board a bit so that it fits into the paper towel loop. This holds the print so that it doesn't curl, and doesn't add any heat to damage it in any way. If you want to add some warm air, set the unit beside your warm air register. (Assuming it's winter where you live. You Aussies NZers have 6 months to practice!) Anyway, works for me. A bit cumbersome and only practical for one at a time. Collin -- . --- I know what I'm doing. Re: Why do you choose or stay in Pentax ?
There's an interesting psychology in the consumer. It seems that people rarely change brands, and often become brand-dependant as a sense of personal security and fulfillment. A product of Madison Ave. and our culture of consumerism and greed. Get a cell phone from provider #1 you won't like change to provider #2 without good reason. Like really poor service. Get a car of make X and you'll always hate make Y. (Note the regular poking fun between Chevy Ford owners, the pride of MB BMW owners, and the condension toward us who drive rice burners.) Camera owners are the same. Look at the newsgroups and the sparring between Canon Nikon owners, and the arrogance of Leica Contax owners. Blad owners look down on Fuji, Mamiya Pentax, but Each of them knows the real truth. Some Linhof users won't lower themselves to using a Toyo, but maybe an Arca-Swiss. Bender is for beginners. But Toyo users sure got the best bargain, Arca-Swiss users got the best engineering, and Bender builders know every little nuance of the unit's behavior. The psychology is amazing to watch in action. But to the question: I'm happy with Pentax 35mm. There's no cause to change. In roll film, my Spartaflex sold new in the 30s for about $30 or so. Not much to look at, but it's just for fun. In 4x5, well, Pentax isn't in that arena...yet. Collin -- . --- Cats are evil incarnate. They are only your friend until someone makes a better offer. Some e-marketing thoughts
I use ebay extensively. dpconsult.com It grew out of a hobby @ first, in 1998, when many of the priced were very low and bargains were everywhere. (And my income was pretty high, which helped a lot.) It became a business last year when I was unemployed for an extended period. BIN started then and has proved useful. First, starting a price high, near the BIN, is more of a buyer discouragement than one might think. The result is postponing activity and interest. BIN can be used for multiple reasons. Some use it for sucker bait. There's some outrageous BIN prices on a lot of listings. I like to put it just above my perceived value. When I do that, the starting price is about 1/2 of the common selling price. That allows a decent price if someone wants to kill the BIN. (I've actually had some items sell for more than BIN which was killed early in the auction.) This approach keeps me from having the use the Reserve Price option. Many people don't bid on Reserve auctions. THis compromise has worked in my venue. Camera stuff vintage electronics. BIN is also practical if you need the money right way, or need to move the product quickly. On some items I'm careful with BIN. It seems many items are worth more than I perceive. A couple of years ago I picked up a piece of networking software, a 25-user Netware 4.22 bump disk to be specific, that was still sealed in its package. My first expectation was that it might be worth $150 or so. If there would have been a BIN, I'd have set it at $100 and lost a LOT. But I started it at $10 and let it ride. Ended up going for $680. Re: Portrait lenses
Wendy, Studio phtographers solve the problem with ease. And they don't use soft lenses or soft filters. They use soft light! (Direct light from a single open flash produces shadows. That makes detail appear.) Put your flash on an extension, just to the left of the camera. Tape a piece of tissue over the lamp. Put another flash to the right, about 3' from the camera. Place a slave module on the shoe. ($20) You might need a stand for the flash. Use your extra tripod. (We all have one. Just admit it.) Also put a piece of tissue over the lamp. Shoot a few to experiment with the right flash placement. Good information. But let's add to it: What paper did he print on? What lens was on then enlarger? What chemicals did he use. There's so much more to the resultant image than just the film and lens. Ted, Most any of the 35mm enlargers will do for starters. Just be certain that (1) it's in good physical shape so that your print is truely square, and (2) that the lens is clean and clear. With those two items resolved, your options are still wide open. Just like with your camera, it's the lens that makes the picture. A more modern lens will be multi-coated and provide a better picture. Some of these are pretty cheap. You can get a Voss 75mm lens for about $20 from a variety of sources. The standard lens for a 35mm print is a 50mm focal length. If you make prints larger than 8x10, a 50mm lens will start to show some distortion toward the corners. Getting a longer focal length lens resolves this becuase it has a larger coverage on the negative's side, and thus provides a flatter field for the print. (But you raise the head up higher to make the print.) I like using a 75mm lens for 35mm negs, a 90mm-105 for medium format, and have a 161mm for the 4x5. If you consider this a starter enlarger, go to some camera club meetings. THere's often old (40+ years) units, like Federal or DeJur brands, that will sell for $10 or so. Then just add a newer lens and get some nice prints. Should you upgrade the enlarger later, keep your newer lenses (sort of like owning a Pentax!) and upgrade the body only. Have fun. Just some rantings about MF Enablement
I was encouraged by the conclusion that WW came to -- why pour all this money into good 35mm (TF = TinyFormat) when the same money will buy good MF or LF lenses. Yes, the same money. Want a good portrait lens? $300 - $500. Check your 4x5 6x6/6x7/645 prices. Pretty close to the same. Want a good wide angle? $300 - $400 Not much difference. Want the best? 200/2.8? Still not much difference for the equivalent in the bigger formats. Now, I like my Pentax. I have 2 bodies (ZX-M MX)but only 4 lenses, a set of extension tubes, and a 2x. Suitable for me. The next purchase will work with all formats: Lighting. A single monolight. Already got the stand and umbrella. Now, I realize that not everyone will get into larger formats, despite Aaron's proddings and and guilt-associated manipulations G. It's a hobby for most of us, and should be kept as such. It's fun (and a living for some at the same time). My conclusion: Get more glass and film. Have fun. Collin -- --- Get over it. Dr. Laura -- - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I did find a wonderful medium format folder last week. Proud III It has the little ground glass vertical viewer (like the very old folders) as well as the rangefinder. It also has alternate windows onthe back for viewing different frame marks, and a flip-up mask for shooting 6x4.5 or 6x6. Really a neat little camera. My research shows it to be quite uncommon. Interestingly, WRT Mamiya RB/RZ, the film is much flatter when using 220 than when using 120. The paper backing has an affect on flatness. This would probably be the same for any that roll the film back across the rollers instead of directly onto/off of the spools. On the Digital Advance
Perhaps Pentax isn't doing a great deal of body upgrading because they can see the future better than us. Steven I were in Cord yesterday. Not only is the RB/RZ section continuing to grow, but so is the Blad section growing. A 500c/m with A12, Chrome 80mm, prism for $899 -- in a retail store! One year ago that would have been $1,300. As the digital advance continues, 35mm and medium format film body sales will continue to plummet. I'd warn about buying new film bodies in much of the future. I'm not certain that we'll see a K lens-compatible digital body. Pentax has not generally considered, as we all know, the 35mm form factor to be in their pro venue. (I personally think they're missing something WRT digital applications.) But none the less, film body sales will continue to drop (in all formats) and digital will continue to rise. Pentax is, I suspect, working on digital for the 645nII. My personal predictions are that 35mm will continue in its general present condition for a long, long time; the 67 series will not go digital for a long time; Pentax will move almost entirely into the medium-format form factor for digital and let 35mm flounder because it's a source for revenue to produce the real cameras. Re: Developer exhaustion
I don't replenish. Seems too much expense in a hobbyist's darkroom. I reuse from the 1/2 gal. developer about 10x then dispose. That's enough to allow for (a) a good, strong, pretty-clean developer in the tank and (b) enough precipitaion of mater in the jug so that each development is consistent. Beyond 10x I've found too much precipitation in the jug to trust any more development. I've found that controlled reuse and adequate dilution in the jug gives me consistent results without having to dispose of it after every use. This is with D-76, 50% with rolls, 50% with sheet film. I don't know how other developers will behave with this scenario. My next step is to find a good working practice with HC-110. I think it's safe to assume that each jug-brand of developer will behave a bit differently, and I'm not going to assume anything about its behavior. So over time a practice will develop for each developer used. Re: pentax-discuss-digest V1 #2234
Shifting (Pentax has a horizontal shift, Minolta makes[made?] a horizontal vertical shift lens) changes the angle of lines on a photo. Tilting changes the position of what is in focus. For instance, if you shoot a tall building and want it to look vertical, and not like it's falling away or disappearing into the sky, you use shift to compensate. If however you're shooting a table, and you're at 30 degrees to the table, you want more than just the material in the middle in focus. Tilt changes that and will allow you to change the plane of focus to match the item being shot. (Canon makes[made?] a lens that has horizontal shift and vertical tilt up and down). The use of a tilt could have brought the back left corner of the front into focus. (Others with more experience in this might be able to add more to the discussion.) Re: Silly Photo.net thread
Bruce is right and wrong. It is all marketing, and Pentax has failed miserably. Not in the aspect of visibility, the sales aspect of marketing, but with respect to being driven. Pentax produces some of the finest lenses around, and the most outstanding consumer bodies available. BUT -- only 1 pro body. It appears they want to *soak* all the possible profit from each unit. Almost 20 years for the LX series. How long can the MZ-S endure? There's no long-range vision there. Pal is right. Pentax equipment is excellent. But Pentax doesn't have a SERIES -- a reputation -- to go along with the equipment. The LX and MZ-S stand solo, without a comprehensive *solution*. What's a photographic solution? It's not just equipment. It's equipment that will prove itself in the field as being the BEST. Canon wins with the fastest AF. That's not all that's required of an outfit. How about some outstanding specs to meet demanding circumstances? Certainly with not the dust/dirt vulnerability of Pentax' A contacts. How is the dust rejection of the current FA lenses? Pentax can be taken seriously -- but not as seriously as the others. Any venue Pentax works in (in 35mm) the others do as well. This is Pentax' failing -- Pentax does not EXCELL Beyond the others. Neither in 35mm nor in medium format. They used to. But no longer. Mamiya rules studio cameras. 'Blad rules location units. C N rule PJ, digital and film. Pentax is quickly becoming an also-ran, at least in 35mm and digital. Too much concentration on the pieces of the pie and not enough on owning the whole pie. Pentax needs two things: An earned reputation and a driven attitude. Without the latter they cannot have the former. They MUST get ahead of the curve or risk losing it all in the next decade. Pentax has more to offer than most people realize. They are A leader. But not enough to be THE leader. My 2 denarii, Collin -- --- Get over it. Re: The e-ffects on retail pricing
Fascinating. There are several who go into Midwest who simply ask for the magazine price. They're really pretty reasonable folks. Collin Date: Fri, 08 Mar 2002 09:55:57 -0700 From: David Spaulding [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: The e-ffects on retail pricing I'm pretty lucky. Boise, Idaho has a small retail chain, Idaho Camera. They can't always offer the best prices, but they do a good job of service, and they have a great used selection. I was looking over a Pentax 645 yesterday. Camera World is also nearby, but thier in-store prices tend to be a little higher than the mail-order prices. Dave -- --- Get over it. Some thoughts related to my Gallery comments
First, making the comments was fun. You're welcome. One of the reasons that I mentioned cropping for several of the shots is because of a habit I see many photographers getting into -- shooting for the film format, not for the result. We try to fill the frame, letting the camera determine what should be on the print. Taking that approach often fails us. We're often dissatisfied with what we see on paper, knowing 100% that that's not what we saw when taking the shot. But we're confused as to where the results went. The solution: Shoot for the content and EXPECT to crop your results. Overframe a bit. Be certain that you get everything you want in the frame. 24x36 is a 2:3 ratio. Unfortunately an 8x10 is not all of a 35mm neg. Some labs do 8x12s to give you what you shot. A 5x7 is closer. I don't know of anyone who does 5x7.5. But that's the real problem, isn't it. A 4x6 is the right ratio, but it bleeds over. Some labs will print full-frame on your 4x6 prints, but you also have to ask. That's one of the criticisms of 35mm -- you can't do too much cropping given the neg size. Hence the concurrent problems we face with an out-of-control bubbahood sub-group/cult.G When my wife works on her Creative Memories album, cropping is one of the major practices. (BTW, she is now a O-fish-L C-M Consultant, aka leader of her very own cult!) The goal is to make the pics fit themes. But the content has to be there. Hence, for this and other obvious reasons, overframe and get all of the results you really want in the shot. This may be why so many perfer 6x6 and 6x7 [and LF]. They're so big that you can crop pretty generously and still have something very nice in the end. Collin -- --- Get over it. Dr. Laura -- - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. It's Friday
What a day. LDAP logins won't work. (Can anyone out there help me?) Working alone in a conference room. No baseball on TV. No radio. Dead silence. No camera. Nothing to shoot anyway. About 70 outside, and I'm not. What a pathetic, miserable day. ;( All of you (spelled y'all in Oklahoma) have a great weekend. Collin -- --- Get over it. Re: Some thoughts related to my Gallery comments
Shel, I used the paper size as a way of conveying the extent of the problem, not as a standard for composition. My basic premise, more concisely stated, is: Shoot to get the content you want, irregardless of resulting print dimensions. That's a matter I don't find shallow at all. Collin -- --- Get over it. Pentax prices
My son called Pentax last week to get a price on the eyecup M to put on his Super Program. (I wanted one for my MX as well.) They quoted about $30 on the phone. They're only about $15 online. RE: LX vs MX vs KX
It seems a process of elimination. If you want/need the features of the LX, get it. esp, advanced metering ( OTF TTL flash ) advanced construction ( seals and finders ) If you need MLU, but none else of the LX get the KX If you need it small and basic, get the MX If the MX/LX bodies are too small, evaluate a) MX with winder b) LX with winder else get the KX The KX is a nice, practical body. I got one in the mid 80s for $10 at a pawn shop. Meter wasn't working. Just had to work with the switch clean the terminals all was well. Just so heavy. But still nice. Collin -- --- Get over it. Re: Why I Love the APS Format
Actually, as I've learned recently from Creative Memories (for whom my wife is now a consultant), APS film uses a different base than standard neg film. The net result is that APS negs are designed to outlast all other types of film. Is there anyone out there with more information regarding this feature of APS? Collin * Get over it. Steve, I'm surprised you'd drop the MX. That's your brighter screen. Personally, I'd keep the KX and part with the K1000se. If you find the MX too small, just add a winder. Collin -- --- Get over it. 6x7 finder
I went out this a.m. to look used Pentax 6x7 67 units. Found a 6x7 body with standard prism finder and grid screen for $449.00, no lens. The only thing I can't get used to when looking through the finder is the added distance added by my glasses. I can't see the whole image. (Same problem that I experience when using my MX.) Is there a diopter that will cure the angle and perhaps reduce the size in order to resolve this issue? Collin BTW, we usually talk about Pentax 67 units as being used most in the fashion photo segment. Here in Columbus, I'm told by a long-time salesman, they're sold mainly to aerial photographers. Easy-to-handle design and solidly-built is apparently what they require in that business. -- --- Get over it. Dr. Laura -- - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. OT: 67 lenses @ Cord Camera
THey've got a couple 135's, a 105, a 55 (IIRC), and one of the older 90mm LS (Super-Multi-Coated Takumar). It's amazing how much more well-built were the older lenses. The 105 is a newer design. Light, and has that typical A lens feel. Amazing how it crosses the platform. At least it doesn't have any of the play that the 135 A lenses exhibit. (My looking 67 is investigating what would be a good system for (re-)beginning pro shooting. I've boiled it down to two: Pentax 67 and Fuji GA645. The Pentax is more durable and feature-filled. The Fuji is lightweight, AF, and has a vertical frame. Great for shooting people. Maybe I'll end up with both in a year or so. Good used of each is around $700.) Collin -- --- Get over it.
