2003-06-02 Thread Tom Miller
Dear All,

Thanks to all of you who participated in Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day
2003, more thanks than can fit in an email, thanks for sure. The variety,
beauty and creativity of the exhibit is stunning to me. (Have I said that
before on this list?) The other good things I said still stand, too. Wow:
1082 invidivuals and images. Now we have eleven months to enjoy the results
of all the enthusiasm across the globe last April 27. It won't be long
until April 25, 2004.

And news from our tiny commerce division: The pinhole day team has decided
to stop selling pinhole day t-shirts and other "wares" on June 15. The cost
of these items is a little pricey and WPPD gets very little of it - $1.00
per item sold. Thanks to the 30 or so people who bought pinhole day
souvenirs and items this year - that helps a lot to pay the costs of the web
site. So, if anyone wants to buy anything from WPPD3, you will need to do
so by June 15.

That is right Richard, but only 1082 "hang" in the gallery, the remainder 77
were rejected for not complying with the submission rules (i.e., only one
image per participant) or simply because there was no actual image in the
submission, in which case the participant was notified and invited to

Well, the only thing predictable about weather is its unpredictability!
Yesterday though, we had a "Glorieux" sunny, open skies day, just a day suitable
for pinholing, which I did, hope I got something right there up to my level

Michael,

Remember it is a global event, it may be "civilized" in January in your
region but it would be way bellow freezing in some other regions and
probably half way to boiling temperature in many parts of the southern
hemisphere. End of April represent a compromise, when the northern

The artist's email address is right at the foot of the image, depending your
screen resolution, you may have to scroll down the page. The email IS NOT
CLICKABLE and IS NOT CUT/PASTE-able, this is on purpose (thanks Gregg!) so those
programs that collect emails, won't be able to do what they do. The price to
pay for that security feature (very small IMO) is that you will have to write
the email address by yourself when sending emails to artists.

I'm sure you will find lots of inspiration.

While looking at the site you might notice that email address have been
added to each photo. Thanks to Gregg Kemp for setting up in a way that
you could get in touch with the individual artist, but the robots that
collect email address so they can send you more spam can't.

Again I would like to thank every one involved with this years WPPD.

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD in Cambridge, MA

2002-04-29 Thread Richard Koolish
I helped Rob Duarte give a pinhole photography class at the Cambridge Center
for Adult Education in Cambridge, MA. on Saturday and Sunday morning. We had 8
students although one of them was there mostly to get information and
references and didn't build a camera or come back on Sunday. There were three
high school students from New Hampshire and their teacher. We had a magazine
editor and a veterinarian also. We provided all the supplies including a
variety of containers that we had pre-painted and drilled or cut holes in. We
explained the usual things on how pinhole cameras worked and then had the
students make pinholes in brass shim stock. We loaded the cameras with paper
and went out and exposed the first round of negatives. We returned to the
darkroom and processed the negatives. Some were properly exposed and some were
overexposed. Saturday was a bright sunny day. The biggest disaster was that
there was some pretty foul water pouring out of the darkroom ceiling light
fixture, creating a mess and a really bad smell. Since we needed the darkroom,
we tried our best to work around the problem.

Seven of the eight students came back bright and early on Sunday, despite
clouds and rain. We had to stand out in the rain for a while because the
fellow who was supposed to open the door was late. When we finally got in, we
metered the light outside, reloaded the cameras and started shooting again.
The darkroom was dry for a while but the ceiling leak started again, but we
kept working anyway. All the students were very motivated and didn't mind
making long exposures in the rain, some of them up to 30 minutes. There was a
constant stream of people in the darkroom processing negatives, reloading
cameras and making contact prints. I think everybody got to make properly
exposed negatives and prints. They seemed happy about their progress.
Rob had a great idea in proposing the class and I had a great time helping out.

Thanks for the invitation - what a nice idea! Unfortunately, due to some
plans I can't change, I'll be on the road and yelling "stop the car" for
pinhole opportunities. It would be great to meet other Baltimore pinholers,
and maybe we could organize something for another time...

Enjoy yourselves at the museum Sunday!

We sometimes think about how close we are in the internet, tied together
through our computers, but we are sometimes close in real life and don't
even know it. I live just three blocks from John's exhibit at the B&O
Roundhouse, and I'll definatly be there on Sunday morning to see his
exhibit and meet fellow pinholers from Baltimore. They are expecting rain
here for WPPD. I hope its good pinholing weather on Sunday for all the
pinholers on the list. Good luck with all of your projects and shooting.

One of my best outdoors images was made in the rain with an oatmeal
box. The box didn't like it too much but the image turned out great.

Apologies for such short notice as the countdown to WPPD reaches the final
days.

Pinholers in the Baltimore, MD area are invited to a relaxed and informal
photo expedition at the B&O Railroad Museum on Sunday, April 28 beginning at
10:00 am. The museum is located at 901 West Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD.

In addition to an extensive collection of steam and diesel locomotives, the
museum has a unique domed roundhouse, which may prove a blessing if the
weather doesn't cooperate. Come out and meet some fellow pinhole
photographers, make some magic images, and share ideas and techniques.

There is ample free parking in a fenced lot, admission to the museum
roundhouse and backlot is $8.00 for adults.

2002-04-24 Thread Eric S. Theise
Hi everyone,

We've been sending this around locally to some cultural lists, but I
realized that I haven't posted this to the main list. A group of familiar
names have come together to create this event in the Marin Headlands,
and we're doubly lucky because it coincides with the Headlands Center
for the Arts Spring Open House, which typically pulls in 1000-1500 people.

Anyway, this is the blurb, and if you're in the area, we hope you can
make it out for the fun.

--Eric

Please join us on Sunday, April 28th, for the San Francisco Bay Area
celebration of Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day 2002. Organized by a
network of volunteers, WPPD encourages people throughout the world:

* to take some time off from the increasingly technological world we live
in and to participate in the simple act of making a pinhole photograph.
* to share their visions and help spread the unusual beauty of this
  historical photographic process.

Held in conjunction with the Headlands Center for the Arts Spring Open
House, and orchestrated by Headlands Affiliate Artist Eric Theise,
this Bay Area cornucopia of pinholia will feature:

* making your own pinhole photographs using the mini-pin project's
one-shot pinhole cameras; photos will be uploaded to the WPPD website
  and mailed to participants
* demonstrations of how to build your own camera by Daisuke Nakabayashi;
  bring your own light-tight container!
* outdoor photography workshops led by Mark Interrante in the Headlands'
  splendid natural setting
* an exhibit of photographs by local pinhole photographers
* a screening of pinhole camera movies made by local filmmakers
* a room-sized camera obscura in the Westwing of Building 944

When and where: Sunday, April 28th, 2002, from noon to 5pm. Headlands
Center for the Arts, Sausalito, Calfornia.

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD 2002 Event News

2002-01-29 Thread Tom Miller
Dear List Members,

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, April 28, is a little less than
three months away. Seems like a long time, but it could be just two
or three lengthy exposures...

Here are three pieces of news about WPPD 2002 and Related Events:

1) Paper for Workshops
Chris Peregoy, a long-time contributor to this list, is generously
offering a 125-sheet box of Kodak RC mat surface paper to low-cost
WPPD workshops that will be held at art centers that are open to the
public. "Low-cost," rather than "free," recognizes that an art center
may need to charge a minimal fee to recover costs such as chemicals
for processing the paper. When the workshop is posted to the WPPD
Events page, Chris will email the event's contact person to complete
the donation process. Chris mentioned that he has enough paper to
supply up to 16 workshops.

2) WPPD Workshop Guide
A newly-created "WPPD Workshop and Event Planning Guide" has been
posted to the Pinhole Day website at
http://www.pinholeday.org/support/ws_resources.php. This downloadable
.pdf file contains information and suggestions that should save time
and help make your event a success.

3) Group Exhibits
A new feature for the WPPD 2002 online exhibit is a robust search
capability. You will be able to select a set of images by name,
geographic area or group. The group selection is based on events
posted to the WPPD Related Events page. If you are organizing a WPPD
related workshop, lecture or other public event, be sure to add your
workshop to the Pinhole Day Related Events Page at
http://www.pinholeday.org/participate/events.php. TEACHERS: if you
are planning a WPPD activity with your class, please contact me at
events.coordina...@pinholeday.org. Let me know the name of your
school and class, where you're located, etc. and your class can be
listed in the group selection for the WPPD exhibit. Thanks to Gregg
Kemp's wizardry for these new search capabilities.

And, thank you in advance for your interest and participation.

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD/SF Bay Area

2002-01-29 Thread Eric S. Theise
Hello friends,

I've been in touch with a few Bay Area people on this list since I joined
last year, and I was thinking that we ought to be able to muster enough
critical mass to put something great together for WPPD. Now, maybe
someone's already working on this, and I hope you'll invite me to join,
but if not, here're some thoughts.

Originally, I contacted someone at the Exploratorium that I've worked
with in the past, but she didn't call me back. Turns out that's okay,
because I've since realized that WPPD coincides with the Spring Open
House at the Headlands Center for the Arts, where I have a studio.
The Exploratorium is a museum, after all, and this is probably too short
of a timeframe for an institution of that size to react.

The Headlands has a lot more flexibility. My studio is not big enough
to host what I have in mind, but it appears that I'll be able to get one
of the bigger, general purpose spaces in my building, where we could show
and maybe build some cameras, hand out PP (pinhole propaganda), and have
a one-day exhibition of local work. I'd like to try and convert a room
or three in various buildings into camera obscurae, and most of all I'd
like to come up with some way to let visitors do some shooting and get
those images posted on the WPPD site.

No way I can do all this myself, nor would I want to. But a group of 4-6
people, or more, working on this, in advance, and especially in the few
days leading up to the event, could produce a truly amazing event. Open
Houses usually draw way more than a thousand people, and with publicity,
we could pull in a few hundred more people just for our slice of it.

So... if any Bay Area people can devote some time to this, drop me a
note offlist at mat...@cyberwerks.com. Once we've got a quorum, we can
probably move the discussion over to that site-based forum and/or get
together somewhere in town or out at the Headlands to brainstorm and plan.

Hope this sounds like a good idea... Eric

PS. WPPD is Sunday, April 28th. Open Houses run from noon to 5pm.
The Headlands is... well, you can see the map and directions on their
site at http://www.headlands.org/

[pinhole-discussion] (WPPD 2002 Special Events) A Post-Holiday Wish

2002-01-05 Thread Tom Miller
Dear All,

As Guy mentioned in his pre-Christmas update on WPPD 2002 activies,
I'm coordinating special events for Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day
2002. Because the swirl of activities that surrounds the holidays, I
waited until now to ask list members for their help, suggestions and
contributions.

I hope to compile a "how to" paper on organizing a pinholeday
event and then post the result on the pinholeday site
www.pinholeday.org. The idea is to create a mini-syllabus, or
agenda, or a list of suggestions about what can be done in a day; the
type of facilities needed (is a darkroom necessary in all cases?);
what
ideas worked well last year; if building cameras, what type can be
built and used in a day; etc. I have an introductory outline of
pinhole photography topics that I use when giving talks to various
groups. Please let me know your thoughts and
experiences and, if you have any handouts that you'd be willing to
share, they will be appreciated. I'll blend these pieces into one and
post the result to the pinholeday site. To keep the discussion list
focused and uncluttered, please respond to directly to my email
address: twmil...@mr.net.

Also, Gregg Kemp has created a database of WPPD events
http://www.pinholeday.org/participate/events.php. You can add your
event to the database, or query the database by geographical area to
find events close to you. Many, many thanks to Gregg for creating
this remarkable tool.

And, a Happy New Year of pinholing to you, too!

Tom

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD 2002

2001-12-14 Thread Guy Glorieux
Hi everybody,

Some time ago several of us who had been involved with the creation of
the first Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day on April 29, 2001 decided to
get together to make happen the 2nd WPPD, on Sunday April 28, 2002.

The team is made up of
Gregg Kemp, Co-leader
Guy Glorieux, Co-leader
Zernike Au, Asia Coordinator
Diana Bloomfield, Support Coordinator
Jean Daubas, Europe Coordinator and Translation Coordinator with Gregg
Kemp
Ed Levinson, Japan Coordinator
Tom Miller, Events Coordinator
Rosanne Stutts, Promotion Coordinator
Ana Maria Schultze, Latin America Coordinator

Our goals this year is to build on the experience of WPPD1 and to
substantially increase promotion for WPPD2 by reaching out to the
widdest possible groups of people. Since several events, workshops,
etc... were organized on the occasion of WPPD1, we also felt that it
would be appropriate to provide greater coordination through the
WPPD/Pinhole Visions Web sites.

For those on the list who may not be familiar with the WPPD, you are
welcome to visit the site and the gallery of pinhole images that were
made on April 29, 2001 at:
http://www.pinholeday.org

The Team has been quite active since we started in the Fall. We
prepared a Press Release which Rosanne has begun to circulate to a wide
group of people consisting of photography magazines, art magazines, art
education schools and professions, photography clubs and associations,
etc... She has received very positive comments in return and this will
certainly help reaching a lot more people than we hd time to do the
first year.

Gregg has been working hard on making changes to the web site to
accomodate a number of suggestions that were made on the occasion of
WPPD1 and to make the site generally easier to navigate. Tom has
developped ideas to help people who want to organize activities at the
time of the WPPD and he will bring them up on the list shortly. Diana
is working on improving the support page of the web site so that those
who are looking for information about pinholin' can get to it more
easily. And the rest of the team has been involved helping others with
their tasks. There is a lot of work still ahead, particularly as
regards translation.

I will keep you informed periodically on what is going on with WPPD2,
but if you have any questions, suggestions, ideas that you'd like to
share with us, please don't hesitate to contact me or any of us. Best,
perhaps, use the Pinhole Visions Forum to post your ideas on the thread
dedicated to the subject at
http://www.???/forum/

On behalf ot the WPPD 2002 Team, I want to wish you all a very happy
holiday period and lots of great light for pinholin'.

Cheers,

Guy

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD plug in local newsletter

2001-05-01 Thread James Kellar

The following was published in the Bloomington Photography Clubs newletter.
I know that I'm a member, but I did'nt even ask them to write this. BTW-I'm
known as the pinhole nut by most of the club.

As of late Monday evening , April 30, the www.pinholeday.org site of the
First Worldwide Pin-hole Photography Day had 66 images posted on it. These
66 pinhole photographers were from 19 countries from Hong Kong & Japan in
the east to the Americas in the west. Thirty-five entries were from the
United States. A variety of good photography, mostly B&W, but some color.
The site is easy to navigate and loaded with pinhole info, like Pringle
tubes seem to be the camera body of choice in New Zealand. Don¹t miss James
Kellar¹s ³Death on Lake Lemon.² Great shot, James! While it probably won¹t
make the cover of Field and Stream, X-Files may want to weave an episode
around it.

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD Promotion - Some FAQs answered

2001-04-06 Thread Guy Glorieux
Hi everybody,

To help you further promote the WPPD, I have prepared a list of
"Frequently Asked Questions" and Gregg posted it on the web for me.

Plese check at:
http://www.pinholeday.org/org/promotion_faqs.html

Several members of the Coordinating Team and other volunteers have begun
a fairly intensive promotion campaign around the world. But remember
that the more each of you spreads the word in your local area, the
greater will be the success of this event.

You, yourself, know best who to contact in your immediate environment.
So please spread the word to newspapers, galleries, photoclubs,
photographic stores.

And, if you wish to work as a volunteer to help further in the promotion
of this event, please contact me at guy.glori...@sympatico.ca.

Temi,

As you know, photography is often a reversal process and we are accustomed
to travel from negative to positive and the reverse way...

So you can easily imagine that,
"setting up a team so that every other name - when placed in alpha
order -
would be IN the USA must have been quite challenging"
...at least for one half of our team...

:-)) this was just another formulation of your encouraging reaction!!!

Hi all pinholers from Canada!

As coordinator for the promotion of the Worldwide Pinhole Photography
Day in Canada, I would like to ask for your support so that we have a
massive participation from this country.

I am based in Montreal and can easily cover the Province of Quebec. But
I am much less knowledgeable about the photographic scene elsewhere in
the country.

I hope that there are members from Toronto, Ontario, Western Canada, the
Maritimes who will work with me to make this a real success in Canada.

Please contact me, so that we can coordinate our efforts.

Cheers and thanks in advance for your help.

That's wonderful, Vladimir. Diana Bloomfield and I are working with
Guy to produce a marketing/publicity plan. Since there's no way we can
actually do all the publicity ourselves, we'd planned to put together
a package that could be used by anyone to promote the day wherever
they live. I'd love to hear some ideas about what you'd need to make
this easier for you, what types of information.

Here in Belgrade I have some contacts with people from local papers
and TV. I plan to have the complete promotion material on WWPD
translated. Then I will offer it to editors, so that it can be

Also there is a possibility for me to write an article on pinhole

For WWPD day (29th April maybe) I plan to finish design of pinhole

RE: [pinhole-discussion] WPPD Steering Committee more info

2001-02-25 Thread Gregg Kemp
Actually, the makeup of the committee was not accidental. The people on
the steering committee were invited by James and myself and based on
several years of knowing their skills and contributions to the list. Both
James and I also wanted representation from around the globe. The current
absence of any women on the steering group is an unfortunate oversight that
we are correcting.

Here is where things currently stand:

- The steering committee is getting itself organized. More members will be
invited to join the steering group today or tomorrow.

- A poll of the entire membership will determine the exact NAME of the
event and the DATE of the event. Anyone who has a suggestion for a NAME or
DATE and has not sent that to James, needs to do so today.

- A list of working groups will soon be listed on a web page with requests
for volunteers and a contact person for each group. We hope that everyone
interested in volunteering will find something to do in one of these
groups, or let one of the steering group know what is missing. Many
people have expressed interest so far and that is an important point - the
success of this will rest completely on the involvement of the list.

Sorry information has been slow coming out. I hope this helps some.

I'm pretty new here, Michael; I'm so new to pinhole that I'm still in
the "making the camera/lens board" stage, have never taken a pinhole
photo; Austin, TX is very well represented by George Smyth; and I'm
not that fond of committee work. All of which is why I didn't respond
to the specific request, I thought it would have been presumptive; but
I did email earlier saying that if the group chose to form such a
beast I'd be happy to help if needed.

I'd prefer to see a couple of women who have already been active serve
on the committee, just trying to encourage them to step forward and
the committee to reach out. And I don't suggest replacing any existing
members, rather adding to the group.

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD Steering Committee more info

2001-02-25 Thread James Kellar
Hi all,

Here is a bit more inof on the steering committee.

The members of the committee are as follows:

Larry Fratkin, Guy Glorieux, Jean Daubas, Gregg Kemp, Zernike Au, Guillermo
Penate, George Smyth, James Kellar and Ed Levinson*

At this time we have noleader of this group, but I'm sure that one might pop
up at any time.

If you have been on the discussion list for a while I'm sure you know
everyone on the committee. If not, we have all had a strong interest in
pinhole photography for many years, and have been members of this list for a
long time. If you have asked a question on the list, chances are one the
names above answered your question.

If you are new to the list you might ask what is the "World Pinhole
Photography Day"? I don't remember who started, but some one in this group
brought up the subject of having one day out of the year devoted to promote
pinhole photography. That is any one who wished to participate, inside or
outside the discussion group, could take a photograph using a pinhole camera
during a 24 hour period. Photogaphs taken durning this time frame could be
then uploaded to the web for all the world to see. If you want to become
more involved it the WPPD, Guy Glorieux will be asking for volunteers on
servral projects. There will be lots of work to go around.

So what's next? I have been asking for suggestions on servral issues that
deal with WPPD over this last week. Sunday night I will send your
suggestions to Gregg Kemp who has built a polling web page. As soon has
Gregg has it finished he will announce it to the list membership, and
everyone can then go vote on such things as, what day this event will
happen, or what shall we call this WPPD thing. Plus other issues. The logo
issue will be addressed at some future date.

Any way thanks to every one who sent in suggestions, opinions, and other
comments. As soon as the WPPD polling page opens, remember to go vote.

Thanks

James

*Ed Levinson is not a offical member of the committee, he will be keeping an
eye on us and throwing in his 2 cents worth in every once in a while.

I guess I misunderstood his letter. He mentioned getting info in by the

RE: [pinhole-discussion] WPPD ISSUE VOTE

2001-02-22 Thread Gregg Kemp
I'm not sure if James will be in e-mail contact for the next few hours, so I'll
clarify about the voting. First - we are NOT voting yet. We are collecting
the various ISSUES that need to be voted on. We will all have the chance to
vote after everyone has had a chance to add their issues (by Sunday). James
extended the deadline for sending him the issues to vote on until Sunday.
After that, we'll open up a web page where everyone can vote and immediately
see the results of votes taken up to that point.

There IS a steering committee forming. As that moves along, information will
be posted to the list. As the various work groups form (if that is the
direction the steering committee goes), it is very likely that there will be
additional items to vote on, so this first poll may not be the last.

Meanwhile, this is a great time to discuss all the possible ideas, but its a
little early to start making final decisions.

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD ISSUE VOTE

2001-02-22 Thread GarfinkelDesign
James, Here are my votes for the day:

NAME OF THE DAY: Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day

DATE OF PINHOLE DAY: April 29th

NAME OF THE WEB PAGE: WWPPD seems good , but
worldwidepinholephotographyday.com seems long, but I dont mind it.

LOGO: I vote for Pam's with animation.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] WPPD Logo

2001-02-22 Thread GarfinkelDesign
Hello All:

I still really like this logo, the pinhole is like the shape of the earth and
the other oval is like the projection map we looked at. Both give the feeling
of the earth... etc while communicating what we do, which is photography
(pinhole) - we are showing a few changing pinhole photos within The color
of the oval is pleasing - and the whole design does not look like clip art
(thank god) which is what the other items impression (for me) is.

I am critical about the other submissions as I have been a graphic designer
for more than a decade —— looking at symbols as language (and design is a
language), designing icons for businesses and so on.

Again as mentioned before - Pam's logo is friendly and I hope everyone will
consider this as it effectively gets our message across very well...

I will fill my information out about this on the form that arrived this am -
to vote for this idea

thanks.

Wendy Garfinkel

Thank you, Wendy. Here's an animated version with photos stolen from
George Smyth, Guillermo Penate, and Robyn Gough. I really like all
three; but they're included here for illustration since I've not yet
received permission to use them.

Apologies for the ill-formatted reply. Reluctant to give in to

Also, I think I know James' e-mail address after all... ;^)

Will attempt, but perhaps the submission deadline could be extended
until the weekend, with voting next week? Also, which e-mail address
should submissions go to?

Thanks again for organizing this, and put me down for a few $$'s

If we decide to go this route, I wrote polling software that would allow
everyone to vote on a number of possibilities.

Yes, it seems to me that given the creative bunch we
have here, a logo contest would be the way to go
I was just trying to improve on the design that
existed at the moment.

Larry writes about 'pinholes without borders',
"I, for one, think it should be counted out. Democracy is not the issue."

We have an opportunity to improve on ordinary democracy by making sure that
no one's feelings are hurt, even in the slightest, by any of our actions.
This extraordinary effort is merely difficult, not impossible. Suggest the
name be dropped immediately.

[pinhole-discussion] WPPD

2001-02-18 Thread Larry Fratkin
Folks,
Another thing I think we're going to need is an official poster. This
would, of course, include the logo and announce to the world the upcoming
event and how to participate. The poster should be printable from the www
and translated into several languages. We would all print the posters and
pin them up in public places.

Worldwide Pinhole Camera Day

kids can simply make a camera obscura!)

DATE OF THE EVENT:
January 1st, alternating with July 1st every other year
(the dates are easy to remember &
the hemispheres can swap summer & winter observances)

WEB PAGE NAME:
worldwidepinholecameraday.net

SUBJECT LINE: please set up an email subject line that can be distinguished
from all the fluff being generated by this project

many thanks
