Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread
Hi Pippin, Just a quick Thank you. Been with iPeng since the free browser version and is happy to see it evolve to get as good as I could possibly have imagined. With iOS 4 and the most recent versions of iPeng, all of my i-devices connect quickly to the server and everything works really wellnow even with lyrics :-) So - just a quick thank you. Aloha, 0.3.11 was a bliss, and I was really looking forward to 0.4. And it's sounds like it's great. However, I suck. I cannot get it to work. My first shot was installing it as usual, but as a plugin, not a skin (removing the Support plugin). And I did read the note about needing to install the actual HTML part in two locations. And I got that to work with the Now playing screen, but not with the home screen. Then I *sighed*, and installed it inside the Server itself, also according to description. There was a bit of confusion in my end, but it all worked out. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce]: iPeng 0.4 iPhone / iTouch plugin
Hi Pippin, It is nice :-) I do not see the big difference from 0.3.11, but everything seems to work sligtly better than before. I like the Album browse mode, although you're right - it's too slow to be really useful (and I miss cover art for a lot of my collection). It was a bumpy road to get there, though. I first tried installing in my Application Support (Mac OSX), following your instructions for this. The Now Playing showed up OK, but the home screen was blank. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled in the PrefPane. No luck. A few shots gave me a strange lacking-all-graphics-but being full-screen skin. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: slimfx - Flash-based Skin / Control App
Mac OS X 10.5 users can run a selected part of the SlimFX skin as a dashboard widget. You can run the whole skin as one huge widget, just the player controls as a tiny widget or anything inbetween, incl. access to playlists etc. How to make a widget All that is needed is Safari 3 + Mac OS X 10.5. In Safari select File - Open in Dashboard and make your selection and then you have a very advanced SlimServer remote at hand. It also works with other skins, but a lot of skins jumps out of Dashboard to open Safari whenever you interact too much with them. SlimFX seems to work 100% in Dashboard. SlimFX, Dashboard Scrolling = One note reg. scrolling: Click in the scroll bar, below or above the current location of the scroll marker. It seems that when I use iTunes Update and TrackStat at the same time, then ratings made on the now playing screen using keys 1-5, they are passed through to iTunes Update, not TrackStat. Is there any way to change this? I'd love the rating to be stored in the trackstat database as well as the iTunes database, as it is the trackstat rating that is displayed on the screen of my SqueezeBox. Right now, ratings made through any web skin using TrackStat are passed nicely onto the SqueezeBox screen + to iTunes. Ratings made witht the SqueezeBox remote only shows up in iTunes Update and iTunesnot on the screen / in the web interface (exept through iTunes Update, ofcourse). And the combination of - the actual SqueezeBox - SqueezeCenter 7 - iPeng Skin - iTunes Update - CustomBrowse / Scan / TrackStat - The alternative Music Information screen - MusicIP Mixer - iTunes - A Mac Mini + and iPod Touch + Wireless - Mac OS X 10.5 Finally seems to make a fantastic home-music-server-solution I finally have a stable, headless server solution running, which still needs tending from VNC once in a while, but which is finally getting accepted here at home (after almost 1 1/2 year out in the cold by my wife). It works, and it seems stable. It starts up just before I get home, and shuts down just after I go to bed. It lets me rate my music and use my dynamic playlists from iTunes. It provides a way to rate my music as well as use these ratings dynamically (through iTunes). I even have a strategy for playing CD's (using NiceCast + a favorite pointing to the nicecast broadcast). Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with CustomBrowse and iPeng
Hi there, Thanks for keeping up with my lack of manual reading ;-) Anyway, I belive that you as a UI designer will have to make things so simple to use that people can do it intuitively, not through unrealistic requirements of manual reading (or FAQ's for that sake). This is the only thing I really remember from my Human-Machine-interaction course at the Tech. University, some years back (it was Win 98 at that time...). Regarding your 5-step play thing, it does not really seem intuitive, but perhaps it works. Can you clarify (I am away from my SB currently): Will pressing Add all add the songs to the current playlist and then a) Switch to start playing the first song of the added stuff b) keep shuffling only among the stuff just added The above describes the standard Play button behaviour in other skins, when pressing the Play buttom next to an artist name. If I wish to add them to the currently playing playlist without disturbing the curent track I would press add instead of play. If I could choose two buttons, I'd choose as follows: a) Add to current playlist w/o disturbing current playback (the current button, I suspect) b) Play whatever is selected - that be, everything from that artist, everything from the current search (!!), song X from the current search, everything from this album etc. Replacing the current playlist with everything covered by what I press play for (standard SB interface behaviour + standard skin behaviour) And then I'd like the MusicIP Mix button on the Currently Playing track screen. I can live without it anywhere else. If I could choose three, I'd go for having a) Add b) Play c) Mix from CustomBrowse ;-) Would a simple solution be to make make it possible to set in the settings which buttons I wish to have available, and then make the default fit Pippins favorite way (that is, only the Add button)? Then I can add what I wish for, and see if my wife will accept the new remote, so I can throw the old one out :-) Regarding the hidden functionality. Damngotta find it w/o manual reading ;-) I at least found the way to swap tracks in the now playing-tracklist-window. That works until drag'n'drop becomes an option. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with TrackStat/iTunes Update and iTunes
This was an impressively detailed answer! Now, the issue at hand is that I wish to rate from iPeng. As far as I know i will then have to use TrackStat. I currently have 2) and 3) installed. This seems to make it possible to rate on iPeng and have the data transferred to iTunes (I am working on verifying this...). Now, I need the ratings from iTunes transferred to the SqueezeCenter, so that they are available for TrackStat used under iPeng. I will almost never change the ratings in iTunes, though, and if I do it's ok if it takes a day or two (untill the next rescan) before the changes show up. The question is - is 2) + 3) the correct solution here? Is there somewhere in the standard SC server settings where I should configure import of iTunes ratings? [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with CustomBrowse and iPeng
Hi all, I know this may be hidden somewhere in the extensive documentation for the CustomBrowse plug-in...but I dare to ask anyways: When generating a new mix using MusicIP Mixer using the iPeng skin on my iPod Touch, everything works as expected. But...how do I get the generated mix to play in one easy step? Currently what I do is that I a) Clear the current play-list before starting the mixing b) Do the mixing c) Add this to the current playlist d) Panic, hunt around for some way to make that new playlist play using iPeng. Usually ends up on the now playing screen and press play, but this seems very non-intuitivie I'd like to shorten this procedure to b and then a play command that makes the new mix start playing, replacing whatever other playlist I had going (this is how MusicIP Mix'es works when activated directly from my SqueezeBox w/o the use of CustomBrowse). Can I do that through iPeng? How? Hi there, A small note here: There is an active mode for iTunes Update which sends the info back to iTunes. This seems to work fine. Only thing that does not work is that the combination of iTunes Update / CustomBrowse / TrackStat seems to be capable of slowing my server to a grinding halt, resulting in jerking music from a server that is connected directly to the SB via Ethernet. Not nice! However, I really do like that I can rate my music from my SB, since I am running on a headless server, and use my rated music for DJ'ing (so, when I hear a new cool track from one of my 10-box swing-music sets that I rip to my headless server and play back using my SB, then I'll rate it on the fly and I'll see this track as rated in iTunes and consider using it for DJ'ing at a swing-dance event, using iTunes on a MacBook). Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with CustomBrowse and iPeng
iPeng is in general a bit slow, but I suspect the iPod Touch browser to be the issue here. However, where I really notice this is with CustomBrowse. Wonder why - perhaps it's the rendering of the long menus (some takes forever to scroll through). I have 1000+ albums and approx. as many artists...this generates VEEERY long menus with my current setup (perhaps I need to change something?). No matter what: It would undoubtly speed up iPeng, if I could turn off artwork during the browse mode, so I only had artwork on the Now Playing screen (I do not need it before, anyways). And now back to the matter: Anyone with input reg. MusicIP-CustomBrowse-iPeng-playback? Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with CustomBrowse and iPeng
It's great with this quick ping-pong. It makes it fun to give feedback in a forum - I almost feel like I participate in the development, although all I do is whine ;-) Anyway - one thing caught my eye here: There is no standard play buttom in the iPeng setup, you say? There definately should be, as this is the single-most important feature of my SB - that is, to PLAY the music! But I am a bit confused here. Everywhere else in the iPeng skin there's a play button. It only seems to be in the CustomBrowse plug-in menus that it's missing...and only in the iPeng skin. I don't really know what this means (since I do neither side of the programming), but for sure it should be there all over CustomBrowse - I can see that the Play is there when I use CustomBrowse with another web-interface (e.g. Default). Anyway - currently the result is: I simply don't know how to get anything from the CustomBrowse menues to actually play except if I add them to the current playlist...and then wait I'll try modifying the XML files. However, this is on the limit of what I can do. If a mod to the XML doesn't work, I don't know how to troubleshoot it As always - keep up the excellent work. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with TrackStat/iTunes Update and iTunes
A few quick answers: Setup: - Headless server: Mac Mini 1.42 GHz PPC, Mac OS X 10.5.2, 512 MB RAM (cannot be expanded easily), SC 7 beta as of today. Headless, DJ'ing iTunes: - Current setup is a bit clumsy: What I do is that I run all software on the SB server and then export a playlist with my 4 and 5 star ratings and then imports this on another system. It works ... but is slow and clumsy. So I only do it once in a while. But it makes my SB much more useful :-) Plugins disabling - Could try that. However, music is playing and my wife is happy. So no disturbances in the setup tonight :-) The ultimate goal is to make her a happy SB user as well (quite far from it right now... ). /S. P.S. One more challenge that I'm facing is the lack of an Auto-OK/Cancel-to-dialogs on Mac OS X. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Help Needed with CustomBrowse and iPeng
OK, being a UI-is-something-you-use guy, I haven't read the full manual (but I have read bits and pieces). Going for an artist, let me get the proper procedure for playing everything from that artist straight, starting from the following assumption: - I currently have a playlist with 30 tracks running (e.g. a Random Mix ;-) - I start from the home menu Then what I do is: - Touch browse library - Artists. - Touch the x symbol next to The Current Playlist to get me an empty playlist - Touch E as in Ella Fitzgerald. Then wait. - Scroll to I find Ella - Touch the + sign. Wait to I see all songs have been added - Check the playlist by clicking the playslist icon next to untitled playlist - Tap title of first song to play this playlist Ok. This works. But I could have saved a bit of waiting time if it had worked like it does as standard on my SB with my remote: - Select Music Library - Browse Artists - Type E, then it jumps to first artist with E - Scroll to I find Ella - Press play That's it. 4 steps instead of 7... Or did I miss something in the manual? (if so: Sorry!) Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: slimfx - Flash-based Skin / Control App
Ok, will do that. If I am duplicating a known error, however, please someone help out the developer of SlimFX. He has been asking for input for weeks to the problems experienced by me and Windows Vista users. As for SlimFX itself, I believe this could really be the thing that will make the SqueezeBox more competitive with e.g. AirPort express. The SqueezeBox provides the display and the remote, but the AirPort is much easier to use when sitting at the computer. My honest opinion is, that SlimFX has the potential to change most of that game. Like it or not, the current SlimServer is a cool geek thing, but way too clumsy for e.g. my wife. She just doesn't bother. And that's what I think stands in the way of major commercial breakthrough. I demo'ed the SB for some friends (age 25-33) at the university computerclub (http://macvaer.dtu.dk), and they liked it, but they all noted that they wouldn't get it for their home, since it was too non-intuitive and slow for friends (and girlfriends) to make playlists and control it from the computer... So for the commercial Slim/Logitech guys following this thread, I would direct my attention at getting all the help possible given to this guy... Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: slimfx - Flash-based Skin / Control App
OK, I think I've got the problem nailed. It shows up that on a new installation (10.4 instead of 10.3), I still cannot install SlimFX for SlimServer 6.5.1 / 6.5.2 At least not untill I remembered some instructions written in the iTunesUpdate software (never got that to work, but that's another story). Here it is noted that it may be necessary to place the plug-in inside username - library - PreferencePane - SlimServer (or in the global preferencepanes if SlimServer is installed for all users). Now, this is done by locating the PreferencePane, right-clicking on it and selecting Show Content. Then I navigate to the same HTML folder as is seen in the Preferences - SlimDevices folder, and place SlimFX here. And behold: IT WORKS AGAIN! So what has been found MUST BE A BUG IN THE SERVER since my original SlimServer install (6.5.1 alpha from November 2006). No matter what is placed in the SlimDevices preference folder, it is not identified by newer versions of the SlimServer. BUT...if it has been found with an old version of SlimServer (e.g. the real 6.5 release), then upgrades to 6.5.1 / 6.5.2 will keep seeing it (perhaps all new installed software in this location as well..I don't know). Does this make sense? Is this enough info, for the people developing this software to troubleshoot the Mac OS X version? Please let me know if this entry is enough to consider this filed as an official Bug Report (or if my report is dismissed, for that matter). No matter what - now I am home safe, and looking for next version of SlimFX. As for all other Mac-users...I believe they must experience same issues as me...but I don't know /S. -- Sune Sune's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8823 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32422 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: slimfx - Flash-based Skin / Control App
As those who have followed my notes on the SlimFX on Mac OS X will know, I have been unable to access the SlimFX interface on Mac OS X 10.3. One of the things I note when running my SlimServer on Mac OS X 10.3 is that I can add anything to the base URL without getting a real error message (e.g. http://localhost:9000/slimfx/blabla.html does not result in a page not found although blabla.html definately doesn't exist). On Mac OS X 10.4 this does indeed result in a Page Not Found. Noting the comment on the Perl version above, I checked on my Mac OS X 10.3 installation, and here I only have Perl 5.8.1. Could this be the cause of the error? That the Perl version is too old? Anyone who can point me to info regarding how to update my Perl installation on 10.3? Note that I do not have developer tools installed AFAIK. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: slimfx - Flash-based Skin / Control App
Aloha, I can run the index.html file by itself and everything shows up fine. But I cannot get 6.5.1 / 6.5.2 to recognise SlimFX under Mac OS X 10.3.9. Goes fine with Mac OS X 10.4.x Anyone who has succesfully managed to install and attach SlimFX to the SlimServer in Mac OS X 10.3.9? Any suggestions to WHY the default skin loads whenever I add the /slimfx? Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: slimfx - Flash-based Skin / Control App
Hi there, Just blank pages :-( I can actually add whatever I want after the /slimfx/html/. It will pretend to load it (directory, .html or .swf), but nothing actually happens (source is empty). Seems to be some kind of web-server error...but I dunno why it only happens on Mac OS X 10.3.9, not on 10.4.x. As stated before - if I, on the machine, open the actual slimfx.html file from the window manager, everything works fineexcept that there is no contact to the actual slimserver music database, that is. /Sune gsamsa;181561 Wrote: The last two comments describe similar behavior. No idea why this would happen. Basically, the slimfx skin is just an html file that loads up a SWF (Flash file). (Actually, it uses another frame to load the SWF). I would expect it to work if any other skins work. I suppose it could be a caching issue, or an issue in handling redirects from the directory to the index.html file. (Not sure why this would vary by OS, though). One thing to try in either case...going directly to: http://localhost:9000/slimfx/html/slimfx.html or even http://localhost:9000/slimfx/html/slimfx.swf (after changing localhost to correct server address, of course.) -- Sune Sune's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8823 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32422 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: slimfx - Flash-based Skin / Control App
Hi again, Still a good thing with SlimFX. A few bugs seem to be around when using Mac OS X up against a SB3: - Now playing playlist stopped responding after a while (not updated on computer, not sending added tracks to SB3) - No tracks showing when clicking on an artist or an album. The reason? It could be because I'm switching between two SB's (one virtual, one physical)? It could also be because I am running the SlimServer from my portable. Note that ordinary default web interface was working at all time. A restart of my Mac solved the problem for now - could be it would have been enough to restart the SlimServer. No further details available, but thought I'd share my experience. /Sune -- Sune Sune's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8823 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32422 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: CPAN problem with iTunes Update
Hi James, I'm sure it's good, when it's working. The problem actually lies before installing the plug-in. It's with Perl / CPAN. It seems that I must install Make. Unfortunately I cannot, and my perl-friends also seem unable to do so. If just I could find some other way than CPAN to install a module (CPAN has downloaded the module OK, it's only installation that fails)...something with a GUI :-) One thought in this respect. I am not sure that I do have Developer Tools installed. These may actually be necessary to compile the CPAN modules? [SlimDevices: Plugins] CPAN problem with iTunes Update
I'd love to use iTunes update. Alas, installing the Glue component with CPAN is not exactly easy. It seems that some AppleScript component may have been updated from 0.03 to 0.04, but I'm not sure this is the base of the problem. The real problem seems to be installing Make, which is never succesfull. I get the following error: -- NOT OK Running make test Can't test without successful make Running make install make had returned bad status, install seems impossible *sigh* - I've never worked with perl before should I just give up? /S. -- Sune Sune's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8823 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32013 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
