[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Announce: New WeatherTime Screensaver adds graphical forecasts

2007-01-23 Thread Pellicle

I wnet to set up the plugin today and tried to set up the RSS feed.
This was free and I did not get any request for a partner or receive a
license key. I then went to link shown in the plugin information and
still received neither but a confirmation of the service. Any
suggetions? On the web site is notes the service os now free. If this
is not longer required or given to new customers perhaps a mod is
required.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Announce: New WeatherTime Screensaver adds graphical forecasts

2007-01-22 Thread martin . rehfeld

There have been many suggestions for alternative data sources that could
be used within WeatherTime, lately.

Thanks to Daniel (known as dc11ab in the forum), who mediated recent
talks with AccuWeather, things are starting to look promising.

We might soon be able to eliminate the annoying need for individual
registration with the data provider.

I'll keep you posted...

A big thanks to all users of WeatherTime for their support!

2007-01-01 Thread Roca

Martin, if you're still looking for alternatives to weather.com, this
might work: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/wrh/prototypedf_tab.php

It's a (likely US-only, unfortunately) NOAA tool that produces
forecasts in a few different formats, including XML. Configurable
forecast length and interval. Here's a snippet of today's forecast for
Portland, Oregon:

12
 30
 31
 30
 96
 84
  6
100
 77
0.01
Occasional Rain

There IS an interesting free source for weather data: This is a sample
for Chicago, Ill. for argument's sake.

http://mobile.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?brand=mobile&query=chicago%2C+usa

It's html but pretty minimal, no need to register to anything and seems
pretty complete.

damn, i've never found that list before. I tried searching on my home
town and it didn't recognise it but it is there in that list, but then
i'm terrible for scan reading web pages and instructions :)

i use the bbc weather site regularly, if i see it change to a 5 days
i'll post.

btw, another suggestion i have is to allow multiple cities. currently
left right select's days, how about up and down select's the city that
you have stored (say up to 5 or something?). for example, my wife
travels to london every day and we have it set for that, but i
personally (my kit afterall) would actually rather have it default to
our local town - you would be amazed how much the weather various in
the uk for places not very far away :) . also we do quite a bit of
travelling and would also like to add some other cities in for quick
viewing for the 'ooo, look how nice it is there' factor :D

This is definitely a very good policy :-)
But without the data being easily and reliably accessible it really is
not an alternative and I don't want to have multiple sources to
maintain in parallel.

The choice of UK cities in Weather.com also looks very reasonable to
me: http://www.weather.com/common/drilldown/UK.html?from=search

Let's keep an eye on BBC, though.

Thanks for testing!!!

I have not yet setup trac or something to handle the WeatherTime
project. I think this forum is o.k. for the current traffic...

BTW, regarding AccuWeather: I really would like to have an alternative
to Weather.Com, removing the usage restrictions and having every user
to register by itself. I just don't have the time to discuss this with
the AccuWeather guys. But if they had a decent and documented PERL API
and allow their data to be used with WeatherTime, I surely could look
into it (long term).

2006-11-08 Thread dc11ab

-*The Plugin.pm was installed and working OK for me!*-

*My test environment*
SlimServer v6.5.1 on a SSODS running on a Synology C406 CubeStation NAS
w/Busybox Linux.
An SB3 w/firmware#67 (part of the 6.5.1 release)

*Test case*
1. Installed Plugin.pm in correct dir over existing WeatherTime
Screensaver plugin, which was the latest official release, 1.8.

2. Verified I had the swedish locale settings and restarted the
SlimServer.

3. Verified the SB connection to the SS, then turned off the SB with
the remote control (as I have the plugin running when the SB is "turned
off"-screensaver mode).

4. Verified the "Loading weather data..."-screen, in swedish.
-Note: I saw that the "Loading weather data..."-string didn't show the
"..." part. Is this a bug?-

5. Verified all the available 5-days forecast data available, in
swedish: All the available strings fitted the screen.

*Notes*
I have no means of testing all translation strings as I am not able to
feed the plugin with the weatherdata myself manually. If I was any
better at shellscripting I'd like to make that kind of translation test
script that would show all strings in a row and then return to normal
mode. Sorry, this is at my current limits in this area :/

Another note is that the strings are all UPPERCASE, without looking at
the code I assume this is a limitation in the available SB font?

Martin, do you have some sort of tracking system available where one
can address feature requests, report possible bugs etc. or do you
prefer us to use this forum thread in full?

2006-11-05 Thread dc11ab

- D'oh! :D

Since there were separate translation strings in the code I thought
that this plugin was "langauge independent" from the SlimServer, e.g.
so I could run the SS with one language but the WeatherTime plugin in
another language.

I changed to swedish in SlimServer, copied the Plugin.pm featuring the
SE translation to the right spot and restarted my SlimServer - it
worked out fine!

One bug was corrected in the attached file, I had to insert one missing
translation string. (Believe it or not, the only string missing was by
pure luck the -current- weather condition where I live and instead
showed up in english!)

I also changed a few SE strings to optimize them to the SB3 display
(the only SB I have, and thus can test on).

Don't know if it is a feature or a bug, but I noticed that the "Now"
current weather condition lasted from the evening until next morning.
Shouldn't it say "Tomorrow" after 24:00?

Cheers

2006-11-05 Thread dc11ab

Hi agin

Since I'm a total newbie I don't really know how to make a patch. The
attached file is the best I can do right now, I hope it works better
than the last one. Also, I have made some corrections to some of the SE
translations strings since last time.

Method
I installed PSPad and edited the latest official Plugin.pm file in the
weathertime_1.8.tar.gz, downloaded from Martin site, and simply added
the SE translations in within the subroutine "sub strings".

Other
I noted that some strings in german seemed corrupted:

Code:

PLUGIN_SCREENSAVER_WEATHERTIME_START
DE PLAY drücken zum Starten des Bildschirmschoners

But perhaps this is the way it should look?

Now over to a ...ehem... stupid question:
How do I actually implement the translation? I can't find any
localization options in the server settings/plugins menu, nor in the
equivalent for the Player (both inside SlimServer 6.5.1, that is).

I tried reading the comments at the top of the Plugin.pm, and the
supplemented README, but could not find it there.

Since I am not able to change to SE (or any other translation than
default EN) I cannot test the translation myself. Please, I'd
appreciate some hints on where I can find info to do this change.

Cheers!

Yeah, you're right. Smoke (used fog icon for now) and frigit (still
questionmark) are missing. Weather.com has different icons for night
and day - they are currently mapped to the daytime icons in
Weathertime. Regarding the moon phases, Weather.com does not use
different icons for those - but they could be mixed in somewhere (i.e.
top left corner). It is probably best if you look at the full icon set
of Weather.com (XML SDK - I can send it to you via mail if you drop me
a line) and also at the Iconmap in Plugin.pm to see, which Weather.com
icon is mapped to which WeatherTime-Icon. Weather.com has almost 50
different icons and WeatherTime only 14 ATM.

other icons do you need to make the set complete? According to my

is it possible to pull diffrent "nightime" icons from the weather

Regarding the DE/FR changes:
Could it be that I messed up the charset/strings (which apparantly
affected some DR/FR strings) by extracting the .pm file in Windows
Wordpad.exe?

I did not alter anything apart from adding the: "SE
Swe-string-goes-here"-lines beneath the dutch ones. (At least not
consciously and intentionally ;)

>From what I understand Wordpad/Notepad is not the editors to be used
but I'm not very familiar with latex, emacs, vi and the likes (at least
not yet!). From these, vi is the one that I can (barely) manage best.

Um... and as you can tell I have to find out how to make such a patch
with the SE translation only.
- What editor would you recommend me to use for this activity?

Anyways, I'll have a go at this and do my best when time comes by,
hopefully on Sunday.

By the way, I also noticed that the translation strings was not always
in the same order, for instance EN - DE - FR - NL; in some cases I
found it mixed. The Plugin itself isn't affected but the code would
appear more clean (at least for amateur translators like myself ;) if
the order always was the same.

Thank's for your support and encouragement!

1) No. I did not see any special characters used in the strings that
appear in the 3 lined left part of the display.

2) Definitely no HTML-Format. I think, Slimserver can handle unicode,
but the other translations are probably ISO-8859-1 - so you would have
to try if it works when mixed.

3) You would have to escape ' with as \', since this is the string end
character - no other rules apply.

4) I would estimate 28-30 characters. As SB3 uses a proportial font
this varies.

I ran a diff between your version of strings and the previous one. Your
changes also affected other languages (FR, DE) - I would prefer a
version of the file (or just a patch) adding only the SE translation
and changing nothing else. (I just can't tell, if it breaks the other
translations...)

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Announce: New WeatherTime Screensaver adds graphical forecasts

2006-11-02 Thread dc11ab

Could it be useful to modularize/separate the icon ascii art to separate
file(s)? That could make it easier to update icon images (as opposed to
re-install the entire plugin).

Then you could make "icon-skins" and users could change icon sets based
upon what they prefer.

Another thing that could be separated from the main plugin code is the
translation strings; making it even easier to find what strings to work
on, especially for translation monkeys as myself who might miss some
strings in the code (or perhaps even overwrite stuff that wasn't
supposed to be translated at all).

Basically the idea is intended to make the plugin code easier to
maintain and develop, but perhaps I'm way over my head here? (Please
don't hit me, I'm a newbie :)

Yup... I googled a bunch and tried several converters. But none of them
so far allow for 1 to 1 conversion (1 pixel = 1 ASCII character).

The icons are ASCII, indeed - 40 pixel wide, 32 pixel high, you can add
new icons at the end of the @Icons array.
If you look at the %Iconmap hash, you can see the official Weather.Com
Icon numbers mapped to the matching index in the @Icons array.
Weather.Com icons
19 to 25 are mapped to @Icons[9], aka the questionmark.

For your reference, check the Weather.Com icon set included in the XML
SDK (I can send it to you by mail, should you not have it).

If you design new icons, it would be preferable not to include english
words inside the icon (that would break internationalization of the
Plugin), but try to express the weather conditions graphically.

It would be really cool, if you could come up with something nice...
I'm not a designer, you know.

2006-10-29 Thread dc11ab

Hi Martin

I'm working on a Swedish translation for the WeatherTime plugin. I've
made a draft, attached to this post, and in a later version I'll have
it corrected by a friend who used to work as a meteorologist. Right now
it's based on what I hear on the news forecast on national television
:)

Apart from being a newbie meteorologist translator I'm also a
non-skilled hacker so I'd appreciate some advice on the way:

So, ..errh... go gentle on me! ;)

- Is there a need to add swedish ÅÄÖåäö-characters to the Charset, as
they are used in the strings?

- Should special chars in the strings section be expressed like html
code, for instance: å -> å or what format should I apply to
them?

- Are there characters that I should avoid? (Like /'\" etc.)

- How many chars are recommended as maximum in a string? (As to be
displayed properly on a SB3)

Please have a look at attached file for reference.

Thank you

Assuming that you installed slimserver with the default path, the
directory structure should be;

C:\program Files\slimServer\server\Plugins\WeatherTime

You should have 3 files in there and 2 sub-directories.

I seem to recall that I had to restart my slimserver service before my install of WeatherTime started working. Turning on the plugin debugging option might be necessary if restarting doesn't set it right.
c) Something went wrong in the Internet, and the plugin can't reach weather.com. Gnomes may be behind this as well, better check around your telephone and television cable entry points. They're pesky buggers, and they like the taste of copper wire. Perhaps they've clogged up your Internet tube?

scrambled. No picture and the temperature is in different font sizes
and all text is aligned to the left.

A downgrade to 6.5b3 with weathertime 1.7 did not work :(

Fighting windmills... Use the attached Plugin.pm if you are on 7.0.
Maybe I will put some 1.8.1 together in the next couple of days.

This is one of many calls that have been deprecated for some time and
are now gone as of 7.0.

The new call for this needs to be Slim::Utils::DateTime::timeF

the posted 1.8 does not yet include this required change.

Yes, that's possible as well. The setting you are looking for is in the
WeatherTime plugin settings (where you entered your weather.com key et
al). Set Date Format to "no date (time only)"...

The dependency is actually in the Weather::Cached/Com PERL modules.

Didn't know you were using a third party module. Would be hard to adapt
this to SlimServer's own routines :-/

Would it be possible to add an option to simply not display the date? I
find that to be a less salient bit of information than the current

Sorry, I can't help with this.

Of course you can: replace LWP methods with slimserver's own AsyncHTTP
calls. This will not only get rid of the dependency, but will not block
slimserver during fetches neither. It's a bit of work, but really worth
the effort. Biography/Review plugins just would not work with LWP due to
long delays in web requests.

This sounds like a Synology Diskstation DS-106 specific problem. PERL
does not find the library for HTTP communication. Sorry, I can't help

Hi Folks,

as promised, V1.8 of WeatherTime is out. It now supports (actually
needs) Slimserver V6.5.0+.

As always, you can get it at
http://inside.glnetworks.de/2006/03/11/weathertime-screensaver-plugin-for-slimserver/

One other often requested feature has been added: You can now start
Weathertime from the Plugin menu (instead of just enabling it as a
screensaver). The latter option has been dropped - let me know if
someone needs to be able to enable the screensaver from the player
Plugins menu. Personally, I always do that from the Slimserver web
frontend. But I think, you can still do it in the player Settings menu
as well.

I've just upgraded my QNAP to SS 6.5.0 and added the 'All-in-one' plugin
pack.

With 6.3.1 the WeatherTime screensaver was working perfectly, now I've
upgraded to 6.5.0 it just sticks at the 'Weather Format Loading'
message. I've checked all the configuration settings, which appear to
be okay, having been carried over automatically from the 6.3.1
installation.

I cannot be certain which version of the plugin is included in the QNAP
distribution - the version number is only ever reported as 1.0.

Any suggestions as to what might be happening here?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Announce: New WeatherTime Screensaver adds graphical forecasts

2006-09-19 Thread Tim S

I am having problems getting this plugin to work. I am using slimserver
6.5 (build probably from a week ago) and when I try to use the plugin
all I can get it so say is "weather forecast loading". It never loads.
I imagine it is something simple and stupid I'm overlooking. . .

1. I have registered with weather.com and entered in the proper key and
such.

2. I downloaded the sdk file and unzipped it in the weather plugin
directory (it was never clear if this needs to be don or not, but I
did)

3. My concern is that when you register on weather.com it asks for a
server address. How important is that? I have a cable modem that gets
assigned an p with DHCP so my IP can change. Also, I use a hub/router
so my PC doesn't have an accessible IP. I set up port forwarding in
case it was necessary. I entered "myrouterip:9000" on the weather.com
site and then forwarded any hits to that port to the machine running
slimserver. Is some element of this the problem?

If 3 isn't it, is there something else simple I'm overlooking? Thanks.

Yes, of course (though it has nothing to do with Weathertime, but is a
general setting). You can change the time format in the SlimServer

ATM I can offer only a small breeze trying to blow away some of that
fog...

The PM-File uses Unix-Linebreaks - this will definitely look messy in
Notepad. But even on Windows you can use other editors that can handle
this (e.g. Scite).

You would want to change the function retrieveWeather and replace the
assignments of $gxline3 (currently showing precipitation) to get wind
data instead. The Weather.Com data structure is documented in
Weather/Com.pm .

hi

love the plugin. like the fact that you can go couple of days in
advance.

down here in cape town however the wind is pretty important. 30
degrees (celcius) without wind means you can go to the beach but 30
with wind means you can't go to the beach. and the wind can blow here.

maybe you can fit in windspeed and direction if you squeeze up the
precipitation abbrev. and figure ?(pardon the pun(s?))

i see the data is on weather.com's website. is it in the feed too?

cheers

Try playing around with towns/cities that are in different locations but
close to you, for example I live in Petersfield (no data available) I
tried Guildford about 20mins north of here but got bad results, so I
changed to Fareham which is about 20mins south. I guess as the weather
typically comes from the south and rolls off the hills, the forecasts
are better now and been spot on for the last few weeks.

Try Swindon or Salisbury and see what you get.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Announce: New WeatherTime Screensaver adds graphical forecasts

2006-09-01 Thread Cry Havok

I've got plugins for both AccuWeather.com and Weather.com on FireFox and
generally they're both more accurate than the general BBC forecast in my
case. However that's largely due to the BBC using a weather station
that is tens of miles away from me and the others using one that's only
a few miles away.

The Met Office forecast is generally the most accurate of all, but if
you're not in the UK it's not so useful :)

So far i've been disappointed. I'm finding it too pessimistic with rain
forecasts. The BBC data seems much more accurate by comparison... would
anyone be willing to adapt to the BBC feed?

When I type this URL (3190 is my local code for Reading)...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/wap/5day.wml?id=3190

I get file containing this

http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/wml_1.1.xml";>

Can anyone adapt this data to replace the weather.com feed?

beats hunting and replacing the code myself--it works great now...

By far the best screensaver for Slim! Excellent job :)
For those who are finding it a pain to change the lines in the Unix
format file, please find the file which I changed the lines as per
previous comments. It works fine with the 6.5b1 release

Replace the file at;
\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Plugins\WeatherTime

Restart

Cant wait for the official update, which hopefully will allow us to use
weather.co.uk as well for us UK guys :)

Cheers

Oh, sorry about that. I looked through the posts and didn't see it
at the time. Thank you very much for pointing me in the right
direction. I'm now up and running again!

Hi Kyle,

yeah this is a known issue. 1.7 currently does not run with 6.5 beta
builds. Please check out posts #112 and following of this thread for a

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Announce: New WeatherTime Screensaver adds graphical forecasts

2006-08-25 Thread kyleki

I'm finding that 1.7 is not running properly at all with the latest
nightly 6.5 build. It appears a lot of the display methods
(displayWidth & bytesPerColumn, for example) have moved from
Slim::Player::Squeezebox2 to Slim::Display::Squeezebox2.  When I try
changing lines 2206 & 2207 from version 1.7 to the following:

$xmax{$client} = Slim::Display::Squeezebox2::displayWidth();
$ymax{$client} = Slim::Display::Squeezebox2::bytesPerColumn() * 8;

I get this error message:
Couldn't push into new mode: [OFF.weathertime] !: Can't call method
"client" on an undefined value at
/usr/local/slimserver/Slim/Display/Squeezebox2.pm line 163.

I'm not sure what all this means, but I'm feeling like I'm really
stretching my ability to discern it. Hopefully someone else with more
knowledge of this stuff can shed some light and hopefully provide the
appropriate fix.

Thanks,
Kyle

2006-08-25 Thread kyleki

I just upgraded my 6.5 install to the latest nightly and saw deprecation
messages in my log file. I've manually updated my local install of your
plugin, but these should probably make it into your codebase:

2006-08-25 10:21:30.3960 Slim::Web::Setup::validateNumber() has been
deprecated in favor of Slim::Utils::Validate::number().

2006-08-25 10:21:30.3978 Slim::Web::Setup::validateHasText() has been
deprecated in favor of Slim::Utils::Validate::hasText().

2006-08-25 10:23:50.5949 Slim::Web::Setup::validateTrueFalse() has been
deprecated in favor of Slim::Utils::Validate::trueFalse().

2006-08-25 10:23:50.5954 Slim::Web::Setup::validateAcceptAll() has been
deprecated in favor of Slim::Utils::Validate::acceptAll().

(This is with WeatherTime v1.7)

Very useful. I set it to Parramatta (Australia) about 20 minutes away.
The family uses it to plan ahead - the info is surprisingly accurate
even 5 days out.

I thought I'd searched through this thread thoroughly, but obviously
missed that :-(

I've got it working now, using the three changes outlined in that
thread.

There are actually two instances of the line:

Slim::Display::Graphics::string

that need to be changed to

Slim::Display::Lib::Fonts::string

in case anyone's confused!

Thanks!

Stalls at "Loading Weather Forecast".

D-server log says (I guess this is the relevant bit):

2006-08-13 15:31:51.2452 Couldn't push into new mode: [OFF.weathertime]
!: Can't locate object method "bytesPerColumn" via package

I've had this working previously with 6.3 (WeatherTime version
unknown), and found it very useful :-)
