trivia help
Hello all, I'm trying to answer a trivia question someone threw at me... Which Louis Jordan tunes made the country charts during the 1940's? Apparently, there were three. Back in the Saddle Again, Babs
v-roys / bare jr.
I guess it's about time for the monthly reminder that the V-Roys are still the best live band in America. I saw the open (?!?!) up for Bare Jr. last night in Chapel Hill and they put on one of the best shows of theirs I have seen. They opened the set with the new-ish "Motion Pictures" and went straight into "Cry." Very good. A highlight was a new song called "God Damn the Sun." "Sorry Sue" gets better and better everytime I see it. And, the biggest highlight for me was "Virginia Way-Wind Down." They are getting tighter and tighter and, as always, seem to be having a great time. They said afterwards that they are really looking forward to the week of dates opening for Cheap Trick...like a childhood dream come true. Bare Jr. on the other hand made me feel old...even though I am not fairly young compared to the demographics of this list. They were pretty good, but they were SOOO LOUD and repetitive. I am still having a hard time really getting into the album cause so much of it sounds the same. I had the same problem with their live show. Re: Wilco @ Pearl Street
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I know life on tour can be a drag, but am I expecting too much when I think a performer should at least try to look like they're having a good time? I saw Jeff and Jay perform a few songs last week at some club across the street from Wrigley Field as part of WXRT's annual Cubs Opening Day party that features the Waco Brothers. Granted, it was about 8:30 AM when they went on, but they even made comments about how it might have been a mistake for them to have agreed to perform. They were very gracious and personable on the street after the show, but I was a bit put off by their comments onstage. Jeff even called the radio DJ/morning guy an "aristocrat" because he mentioned he had recently read an article in the New York Times which quoted Tweedy as saying that his favorite radio show was some show on WXRT, which Tweedy then admitted that he had never even listened to but had heard it was good. Seeing that and thinking about all of the Wilco and UT shows I have seen, I began to wonder how much of this is posturing. He seemed to really be enjoying himself onstage with UT and on the AM tour, but beginning with Being There, he seems to have become the disenchanted rock star. Re: criminally underappreciated albums
To the list already begun, I'd add: Slaid Cleaves, "No Angel Knows" Spoon, "Telephono" and the even better EP "Soft Effects" Bettie Serveert, "Palomine" Toni Price, "Hey" The Volebeats, "The Sky and Ocean" and Brad, "Interiors" Those are all pretty much late 90s, and I guess that is what is on my mind really. I consider Mick Jagger's "Wandering Spirit" also underappreciated because, and pretty much only because, of the fantastic song "Evening Gown." I was very excited to see the Alejandro Escovedo Orchestra play the song and hear Alejandro introduce it as one of his favorite songs...started thinking maybe it wasn't underappreciated cause they played the hell out of it. To weigh in on the Posies in a sort of fluff manner. I always find it interesting that the one album that each of the girls I have dated since 1990 have owned has been "Dear 23." Considering my fondness for the album (for the record I am also a fan of Frosting) I am not really surprised that the women I find attractive all like it, but always thought it was kind of an interesting album to be the ONLY one each had in common. I found Don's rant interesting if only his assertion that those in the NW "always thought the Posies were 'wussies' because, having never been to Seattle I relied on the 15 or 20 transplanted Wasingtonians who now make their homes in Texas who have always told me that the Posies were more appreciated than some of the other local acts who enjoyed greater national success. I always veiwed that with skepticism...just as I think Scott Miller's assertions should be viewed with skepticism. Just because one musician involved with Power Pop is off base about other genres of music doesn't necessarily imply all of of us who appreciate power pop are. Re: A Kerrville flame (Was: Re: Spankers dates)
the line up for that evening: Kimberly M'Carver (Houston, TX) Lowen Navarro (Los Angeles, CA) Anne Hills (Bethlehem, PA) James Keelaghan (Calgary, Canada) Carrie Newcomer (Bloomington, IN) Mickey Newbury (Springfield, OR) Asylum Street Spankers (Austin, TX) There is no way Mickey Newbury is opening for that list, is there? This is just a six-line typo, right? One of the *real* best living songwriters in America, who does maybe 10 shows a year, and he's second on (except for the Spankers) an otherwise motley list of seven. I hope it's at Newbury's request and not the Kerrville organization's idea of the way things should be. Actually the list is in order of performance, so Mickey is performing next to last. There is generally no real order to performances at Kerrville, but in my experience, unless the closer is the Spankers or the Austin Lounge Lizards, the closing role is not that great a spot because people are already drifting back to campfires where the real action is anyway. Re: Steve Earle/Pogues connection
I was lucky to see the Pogues on the "If I Should Fall From Grace..." tour and it's still one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Shane was also the drunkest musician I've ever seen, but he was still pretty coherent compared to what he is now. I have to agree with this. That show I saw from that tour overwhelmed me. The next time I saw them, the "Peace and Love" Tour, (was that the name?), Shane had just rejoined the band after a monthlong alcohol related stay in the hospital. Even though the show had its moments, Shane's performance was lackluster, at best. There were moments when he was completely incapicated and Spider Stacy had to finish his verses. Even when he was able to stand and sing, he seemed to be following the mouths of the people on the front row for cues to remember the words. Chicago this Saturday
I almost hesitate asking this because I know that a Chicago Calendar is posted here periodically (but, living in North Carolina, I rarely pay attention to it). My friend and I are making our annual sojourn to Chicago this weekend for the Cubs' home opener on Monday and we are looking for a good concert to see on Saturday night. I know that the Old 97's are playing that night but, unfortunately, he is not impressed with their studio releases and was even less impressed with their show I dragged him to in Houston over Christmas, so I am looking for other possibilities... I guess a reply offlist would be most appropriate...Thanks Chad ** Chad Cosper Dept. of English Univ. of North Carolina at Greensboro 336-275-8576 http://www.uncg.edu/~cscosper
Roky Erickson
Does anyone know if there is a biography of Roky Erickson in print? I know that Texas Monthly did a short piece on him 5 years or so ago, which is where I got the idea for the project on him that I am just now contemplating a beginning to. I have looked through his many websites and catalogs of bookstores and have found only books of his poetry and references to something that Henry Rollins apparently wrote about him (but have yet to find it). Any leads on biographical information would be helpful. Also, has anyone on the list ever spoken with or had correspondence with Roky in the last few years. I have his e-mail address and am considering writing him with questions I have, but want to better prepare myself with information regarding how he responds to requests for information, etc... Greetings from the other side... this one's coming over the P2 wall as I'm not signed up... I'm just a full-time fluffer. I've been searching endlessly for the lyrics to Alejandro Escovedo's "She Towers Above," but have run into a dead end about everywhere... it's funny that I never queried you all sooner. Anyhow, does anyone know the last verse? That's all I need, the part about where she dances with the dog collar or doll color bone or something :) Please reply to me personally and not to the whole list. Well you can do that, but be sure to include me too. See y'all in June. Any Merlefesters should get a hold of me as well. I'll be down for that as well. Chadooski
Re: boot me baby, but don't sell it
There was a similar thread last year on the Bob Mould list. He was playing out new songs which would them be part of his _Last Dog and Pony Show_ release. His reasoning against taping these shows (he has always been pro-taping of his shows), was that with the new songs, he hadn't even recorded them yet. This is an interesting turnaround for Bob, who encouraged taping of the acoustic shows during which he worked the kinks out of songs which were to appear on Sugar's _FUEL_. I have hours and hours of recorded shows from that tour and it seemed as though he was covering himself by explaining the song in detaila nd explaining how each would sound on the album. He spoke very intentionally regarding this before he played almost every song. He liked to hear the tapes that fans made and even included one on CD in Sugar's _Besides_ collection. If I remember correctly from when I was on Bob Mould's listserv, he put out a call to fans who had recit show because he felt that he and the band had nailed the song "Explode and Makeup" and he wanted to make it available because he swore he'd never do it live again because it had been done. Is "Live at Your Birthday Party" the new Guadalcanal Diary album to which y'all are referring? It's defintely a must-buy for any fan (and be purchased at www.guadalcanaldiary.com) but doesn't contain new songs--just a good selection of "Greatest Hits" done live. Hi, I'm not on P2 anymore, but I wanted to toss this rant out to you carnivores. I've been listening and listening to Joe Henry's new one. I don't get it. I'm trying and trying, but I can't. His songs are fine, but musically, though it may be different for Joe, it's hardly adventurous and quite unimaginative. If you're going to do something different, really do something different, right? To me it just sounds like countless other AAA acts who put their music to dance beats but lack in any soul. It took me a while to come around to "Trampoline," but this time, I don't know. So I guess why I'm posting is because he is playing up here this weekend, and I was going to go see him, but now I don't know if I should waste my time. So would anyone be willing to enlighten me, or tell me why I'm listening the wrong way, etc.? Well... 1) I think over half the revie talks about the music and not the liner notes in a decent enough manner. 2) 5 star scale - I think it would help. Sure, everything's generic, especially this year. I just got some new CDs based on recommendations that I have read here. I particularly want to add to the heap of praise being poured on Cisco's "Wishing You Well from the Pink Motel." This is a very good record... I am listening to Lou Ford's "Sad, but Familiar," about which someone asked recently. I have to say that I am very surprised with it. It is not what I was expecting. Judging from their excellent contribution to Revival II i was expecting something a bit louder and more raw. Even the same song, "So Far Gone," lacks a bit of the power that the RII version has. The album isn't bad, and I expect it to grow on me...just surprised by it. About Son Volt...I am wondering if anyone who may have been at the Raleigh show on Friday was familiar with the song they played in the middle of "Chickamauga," or if anyone knows where I might be able to find setlists for the current tour... The Backsliders
I noticed recently that The Backsliders are scheduled to perform at both Spittlefest (Raleigh, NC) and at SXSW. I thought they broke up. Did I miss something? Anyone know what the lineup is for these scheduled performances? Plans for the future, etc.? Chad Cosper
JD Crowe - White Freightliner
Here's some food for thought, of the extremely nitpicky kind... It seems to be generally frowned upon when non-bluegrass musicians take bluegrass type tunes (for example, Old 97's covering "My Blue-Eyed Darlin" - they pretty much destroy the song) and turn them into something else, but I never quite caught anything on how it's perceived when a bluegrass artist might take something from outside of the bluegrass canon and reshape it in such a way, that it's a completely different song (obviously this is common), sometimes losing some of the essential ingredients that made it such a great tune in the first place... I'm having a hard time articulating my point here, so let me just get to it... First off, the new JD Crowe record is splendid... it's everything I expected and more. The rendition of "Back to the Barrooms" completely kills me, and "White Freightliner" is a dandy as well, on most counts. Yes, numerous bands have taken this song and completely butchered it, and I'll give JDCNS their due by saying that's it's probably one of the better versions I've heard. However, the guitar pattern Townes played on this tune is very particular. I don't know how to describe it best, it's just a constant downbeat in the bass notes that only seems to come back up in just a few instances (? Hopefully people know what I'm talking about). And generally, as much as this song has been covered, I don't think too many folks have ever quite "got it" (only one comes to mind) as it's something that seems to take incredible discipline to play. So I guess that I wish JD would found some way to work this into the song. Obviously, I think it would take an unworldly guitarist to play bluegrass rhythm *and* somehow incorporate the pattern Townes played... but I think Townes was without a bass player on his best renditions of the song, and JD has that luxury here. So I guess what I'm saying is that it falls on JD's bass player and he failed to deliver the goods ... surely it couldn't be *that* hard to get that beat going on the upright g. In close, it's my understanding that bluegrass musicians are very particular about how "their" songs are played. I probably wouldn't get so whiny over many other songs besides this one, but being someone who has been chastised for not playing it right g, I think I'm only being fair... So if anyone feels like clueing me in here, feel free to do so... back to my studies... Chad
more white freightliner
Thanks to Barry for that wonderful blues dissertation... I had totally neglected all of that g. I just wanted to close this and say that I guess it's just a matter of my personal taste with that song... there are so many things that make it great and the part in question is what does it most for me. Everytime I hear that, I feel like I'm constantly sliding down from my seat and towards the floor but never quite making it that far (?!). I guess it might do the bass player some good to go back and check out those earlier versions, and hear what I hear (big assumption, I know). Hell, I even think Mr. Earle's version on the Rig Rock CD is to rollicking, but I like it for what it is. It's not that I want every cover I hear to be a cookie cutter version of its original, but it's taking those little things that are already so fascinating to a whole new level that make covers interesting. I think now I'm going to go decide if they did justice to the vocal part or not g. As for - alt.country anthem, etc... the chunk of the versions, like Barry points out are the live ones, everyone and their mother does this tune... Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Paul Burch played it in Meshel's living room (White Train Freightline), I think I heard 5 different versions during Merlefest a few years back... It would take me a while to think of more, but they're out there... And as for Gram, I'm not sure whether or not this song had made it to that wide of audience before he passed on, or if it had even been written for that matter... Back to my studies... ugh... Chad - who feels like chiming in with his rant on why he hates Ann Arbor so much. Maybe in a few months I'll feel better g
