Thanks for the tip.

Common Answers to Common Questions:
- You can't have more than 64 Megs of RAM. No how no way.
- You can't run OS X.
- The PCMCIA slots cannot be made CardBus enabled.
---

The 64M limitation kinda tells me any further investment into 1400 is a
waste of time. Comments? I currently have 42M, I know I have a memory
module in there (forgot the size). Techworks 24M sells for $80. I don't
know if I can add another module, or replace the current one.

Remember that you can also add ethernet via the PCMCIA slots. These are still
available new, and all 16-bit (meaning NOT CARDBUS and thus only 10
base T) ethernet PC cards that work with a Mac laptop will work with
the PB1400 (not all ethernet cards offer Mac support though, so make sure you
get
one that states it has Mac support). The main benefit of the internal
card is quite simply that everything is there whenever you pull your 1400
out of the
bag.
-

Can anyone recommend a reliable Ethernet card (Mac compatible) for my 1400?

I think I am better off just getting a new iBook. I think the 1400's memory
limitation is putting me into throwing good money, after bad.

I *could* spend a little money to make the 1400 a bit better. The Ethernet
card is certainly viable.

One thing I would like to do, is to have FW in for video-capture, is that
possible? I was told by Apple I needed a G3 powerbook to do any sort of
mini-DV video capture editing.

I have a spare PCMCIA modem card for the 1400 (BNIB) along with cable to a
Nokia cellular phone, if anyone is interested.

Go to www.datamem.com for memory. 24MB is $65, 32MB is $79. I purchase all
my memory form them including a 32MB for a PB1400c I previously owned. They
include a lifetime warranty and the best service I've ever received.

If you have 42MB RAM in yours, and you have a factory installation if 16MB,
then you have something wrong with your 1400. There is no way to achieve and
install of 42MB with any combination of available memory modules in or out
of production (that I am aware of). The closest I can estimate is 40MB or
48MB.

16+24=40
16+32=48
16+8+8=32
16+8+16=40
16+8+24=44
16+16+16=48

If you have an original install of 12MB (only found on an original base
model 117MHz 1400cs) then subtract 4MB from the above totals and there is
still no 42MB total available.

You may want to double check your memory or test your RAM.

Hi Donna,

Type 2 errors typically mean one of two things:

Extension conflict

or

Out of RAM

Try restarting your machine with the extensions off (hold down the shift

did before. If there's no problem, you'll have to try to figure out what
caused the problem.

It seems you know about allocating more memory to AW... you can try
setting it to something obscene (like 200,000K) and try what you were
doing before. If it doesn't crash, you may have just run out of memory...

PB G3 wallstreet memory question

2001-10-08 Thread Chelley Vician

Forgive me for being densebut I have just realized how LOW memory prices
are.

I have a PB G3 wallstreet with 128MB memory installed (64 upper/lower).
When I look at the Apple Spec Database, it says the max RAM for this model
is 192MB.

When I look at Other World Computing website for RAM for this model, it
talks about a low-profile module for either upper/lower RAM slots.

Questions:

(1) Can 128MB modules be placed in BOTH upper/lower RAM slots in the PB?
(thus exceeding Apple Spec max RAM guide and getting 256MB worth of RAM)

(2) If yes to (1), is upgrading BOTH the RAM slots something a normal
person (as opposed to a Normal Apple Tech person) can do? Even if you
answer this as yes, is it advisable to do so?

Thanks much for any assistance you can provide.

Global village (3)

2001-10-08 Thread Christopher Morgenstierne

I have got myself a new old Global Village Platinum Pro modem cum
ethernet
card. It works fine as a modem and I have flash upgraded it to 33000.
But I can't get it working as network. When I try to swich Apple Talk,
both
on my 1400 with 8.5 and on the 190 with 7.3.5 it says something in Danish
meaning 'not possible'. I have downloaded a driver called 'GV PP PC Card
for ARA 2.0' [snip]
and put in extensions folder, but I suspect it deals mostly with the card
modem'ing. And I have the feeling that I mis some kind of driver. The
options in the Apple Talk panel doesn't include a 'power port' option
which
I think it should have, ref the option as a modem to select 'power port'.

I have the same card, but use it on a PB 5300. In AppleTalk chose the
option
of Alternate Ethernet, and remember that any time that you eject the PC
card
you must reselect it in AppleTalk the next time you want to use it.

The 190, 1400 and 5300 all have no built in ethernet port. The ARA in the
driver you downloaded refers to Apple Remote Access, so I _believe_ that
it
is for the modem and not the ethernet portion of the card.

Brent

Thanks for your help. Howver, the problem is, I can't choose Alternative
Ethernet. The PBs consider for some time and then come up with a message
meaning that there is something wrong with the connection and that it
switches back to modem-/printer port. My hub lights up nicely when I plug
the cable in, and I have tried with different cables.

Re: Macintosh Portable problem

2001-10-08 Thread Mike Ferguson

Mati,

You need a power adapter from one of the Powerbook 100 series - the adapter
for the Portable charges the battery which then in turn powers the Portable,
i.e. If the battery is not charged the portable won't run. Using a PB1xx
adapter gets round this limitation.

Lots more info here:

Good luck

Re: PowerCD adapter

2001-10-08 Thread Mike Ferguson

I haven't been following this thread too closely, but what I have seen is
simply confusing, so I thought I'd throw in my twopenneth worth.

Firstly, many of the components which make up devices like a PowerCD, i.e.
transistors and diodes (and chips, which are made up of thousands of
miniature versions of these) simply don't work with AC power, for reasons
which I'm not going to go into here. So, almost without exception, all
these devices require a power supply which can turn the AC from your socket
into DC which the device can use.

It almost invariably DOES matter about the polarity of the power supply.
I've fried various devices over the years by taking a fifty-fifty shot on
this and getting it wrong. Some devices have protection against this, but
others don't. Your call. If the polarity isn't marked on the PowerCD you
could dismantle it and try to trace the wires from the battery bay to the
point that they join with those from the external power adapter socket to
work it out.

So, to summarise - the PowerCD almost undoubtedly ultimately runs on DC,
either from the internal battery bay or from an external power supply.

HTH

Mike

One other question comes to mind now. The PowerCD will also run off of 6 AA
batteries which are installed in the base. Why would it require 9v AC input
and be able to utilize DC cells with a combined output of 9 volts?

(electricity can be rather overwhelming at times...at least for me :^)

No problem. Glad you did notice.

I have not hands on with a Wallstreet, I have a Pismo, so wait for someone
else to comment on the ease. On the Pismo it is all but the mechanically-cha
llenged easy.

I would suggest that you d/l a manual from one of the below:

http://www.accesscom.com/~gamba/manuals.html

ftp://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/powerbooks/

http://www.traffictrak.com/ServiceManuals/

Get a static strap and probably only a small phillips screwdriver.

Let me define some terms for you:

Supported- means what Apple tested at the time of original release of the
model. They apparently do not do any further testing for compatiblity for the
remaining life of the model.

Works- means commonly works by the majority of users, but Apple will not help
you if it does not. There maybe some know bugs or conflict, which you can
usually research on lists like this or certain Mac sites. If you upgrade
Apple OS there is not guarantee that it will continue to work. This is not to
scare you, but to remind you of the recent firmware upgrade fiasco, so you
can make an informed decision.

I am running 768 Mb of ram on my Pismo, with no problems. Apple supports only
512 Mb. When I upgraded firmware, one of the modules had to be replaced by
the retailer.

Enjoy speedier Wallstreet when you install the ram.

Hiya Mati,

I don't know where you are located in the world, but what you need is a
7.5 Volts DC supply capable of putting out 3 Amps, filtered and regulated.

The ideal source is an old 100 series power adaptor ( 100, 140, 150 etc ),
but any power supply that meets the specifications above will work. It will
minimally charge your battery, which is obviously exhausted, and the machine
will run. It would be ideal if you could replace the cells in your battery
as well, so it charges properly. A charged-up battery actually buffers the
input power, acting as a filter to maintain level voltage.

Remember, a transformer alone is not enough: the output must then be regulated
and filtered, before going to the Powerbook.

If you have access to 6-volt car batteries, and can keep them charged up, they
will work. I don't know where you are, but that me be an option you haven't
considered. Let us know how you make out.

I think I can take a stab at this: my GUESS is that your abttery pack is set up
to deliver 4.5 volts DC twice, that is, each bank of 3 AA cells
delivers 4.5 VDC
to the player, because that way you can double the current of the AA cells, and
still keep the package fairly slim ( as opposed to say, using 3 C cells).

That would explain the 9VAC supply, which when rectified to DC, will
deliver 4.5

 I have a PB G3 wallstreet with 128MB memory installed (64 upper/lower).
When I look at the Apple Spec Database, it says the max RAM for this
 model
 is 192MB.

This was the most you could achieve when the Wallstreet first came out
 so
it's the most Apple could endorse. You can actually go up to 512MB RAM
 at
this point. Anything larger than 256MB in each slot is reported to have
 problems (in the Wallstreet models).

When I look at Other World Computing website for RAM for this model, it
talks about a low-profile module for either upper/lower RAM slots.

 Questions:

 (1) Can 128MB modules be placed in BOTH upper/lower RAM slots in the
 PB?
(thus exceeding Apple Spec max RAM guide and getting 256MB worth of
 RAM)

You can put in 128MB or 256MB in the top and/or bottom.

A standard profile DIMM is 2 high from the bottom of the pins to the
 tope
edge. A low profile DIMM is 1.5 high. Low profile DIMMs are more
 expensive
to produce. They are required for the lower slot due to space
 limitations.

You can actually use low profile in both slots if you want to spend the
 extra money.

 (2) If yes to (1), is upgrading BOTH the RAM slots something a normal
person (as opposed to a Normal Apple Tech person) can do? Even if you
answer this as yes, is it advisable to do so?

Installing it in the top slot is pretty easy. Installing into the lower
 slot
requires removing the processor daughter card. You just have to proceed
 with
extreme caution and follow directions to the T.

Check out www.datamem.com. The memory is lifetime warranted and is
 about the
best price around. I've purchased memory from them on several occasions
 and
have been very satisfied. Plus overnight shipping is $7. You can find
Wallstreet memory for $59 (256MB low profile) and $35 (256MB standard
 profile).

If you don't mind being seen in Value Village or places like that, it's

Are there any Powerbook 1400 users here? I'd like to hear of any tweaks
to get it somewhat competitive.

B Yen

Well, an easy tweak is to overclock the bus:

http://members.home.net/gionpeters/PB1400

But this will also change the CPU speed (so be careful).

I am working on adding a HD activity light, and adding a switch to be
able to control my G3 CPU speed.
I would also like to add a small fan if possible.

You can repair CD ROMs for this model, and you can use a Teac 24x
mechanism. It might also be possible to use a DVD in this bay, but I
cannot confirm that yet.

Re: PowerCD adapter

2001-10-08 Thread Eric Burns

Hold it guys, let's go back to the start of this thread:

Janice said that she had a PowerCD, but no adapter for it. She did
however, have a different adapter which was 9vac - 1 amp and wanted to
know if it would work.

Fabian came on and gave her the specs from his PowerCD adapter: 10VDC -
1 amp.

Bruce is right that an ac adapter has no polarity, but that doesn't
change the fact that pumping AC through a DC circuit is an exciting
thing, complete with sparks, smoke and the snap, crackle and pop of
dying components.

I do hope that Janice hasn't tried using that adapter yet.

Janice, the info I sent you is correct, don't panic!

It would be Really Keen, if someone with an original PowerCD adaptor could
provide the specs listed on the adaptor ONE MORE TIME, just so everyone is
completely clear on the power requirements for this puppy.

Points 1 and 3 above are correct. Point 2 is no longer clear, but the last
I heard, the adaptor for the PowerCD outputs 9Volts AC at 1 Amp ( not DC).
I just went over my previous post for you janice, and everything there is
accurate. All you need to do, is confirm the specs from an original PowerCD
power adaptor, and then you know what to find. Since you don't have one of
your own, disregard my suggestion about re-using the plug from yours ( I
didn't know you were without one, and assumed you had a 'dead' one instead )

But it looks like you understand the basics! Probably better than you ever
hoped to! Please let us know when you find one, and we'll make sure it's
safe to plug in, before you actually use it! Fair enough?

PowerCD specs

2001-10-08 Thread Martin

Eric says that someone named Fabian already provided specs from HIS PowerCD
and according to Eric, those specs are for a 10V DC at 1 Amp.

That's IT then. That's what you need, Janice, to run your PowerCD.
Any power adaptor from any consumer item, that puts this voltage
at this current out, will work, provided it's equipped with a
suitable plug, wired with the correct polarity for the PowerCD.

This issue of polarity is where all the confusion started, and
I see that Fabian's specs don't mention that. Maybe he'll see
this and be able to add that information, assuming it's marked
on the power adaptor ( it usually is, but not always ).

Anyone who wants to look this up to be completely clear on it, can
refer to (USA) Radio Shack's catalog page 420-421: they've included
a very clear sidebar checklist for choosing a replacement power
adaptor. Sadly, they don't appear to carry an adaptor to the specs
we're looking for. The closest are 273-1680 or 980-0892, which both
put out 9VDC at 1 Amp (1000 mA). You could try using their 273-1614
on page 422, which puts out 10VDC at 850 mAmps (85% of the original
power adaptor's capacity). I personally, would try this without
hesitation on MY OWN GEAR, knowing that engineers usually allow a
little headroom in these matters, and because it looks like finding
a power adaptor with the exact specs we need might prove difficult.

Janice, if you want to take this route, bring your PowerCD down to
your nearest Radio Shack, and try running it from their 273-1614 power
adaptor. They can help you match the plug you need. Hopefully, your
PowerCD indicates the required polarity at the jack, and the helpful
Radio Shack guy can use one of his multimeters to confirm that the
polarity matches. If it does, you can plug it in right there, and see
if it powers up okay. If it does, you're all set.

If the polarity is reversed when you plug it in, you will probably
toast your PowerCD, so it's important to get that sorted out. If I was
there, I would check continuity between the battery terminals and the
jack contacts to confirm the polarity, and that way I'd be certain of it.
It's worth a try, particularly if no-one conversant in electronics is
handy. Sometimes these guys at Radio Shack know enough to help you out,
but you'll just have to go in to find that out.

The good news is, you should only have to go through this ONCE!

More polarity, please

2001-10-08 Thread Janice Freeman

Hi,
I'm sorry to keep sounding really dumb, but polarity is really scaring me! I
thought I understood from Fabian's original post that the order the plus and
minus was printed on was what I was looking for on a new adapter, but the
explanation below made me suspect I was missing the boat:

Sorry, Janice, but you have to dredge up a 10V adaptor. I can't understand
the polarity indicators, the way you show them, but I know it's hard to
reproduce this in typing. The polarity is important: the little diagram
tells you how it's set up on that particular adaptor. The (-) symbol will
have a line connecting it to either a dot or the ring surrounding it. These
represent the center pin (or hole on the end of the plug), and the collar
(or metal shaft on the plug, with a plastic insulating collar at the tip,
separating it electrically from the hole). If the center dot is positive on
your ORIGINAL PowerCD wall transformer, then you must use a power adaptor
with a positive center contact (the hole in the center of the plug), and
of course the outside shaft (the metal barrel of the plug) is negative.

So, when Fabian says that polarity must be

Polarity: (-)--C--(+)

does that mean that the plus sign must be connected to the center dot inside
the capital C with a solid line?

Can anyone suggest a good primer I could read to understand all this
electrical stuff? I have a bunch of orphaned adapters in my classroom
computer lab, and bin of orphaned donated equipment, but I can never seem to
make a perfect match.
Thanks,
Janice

Re: Power CD adapter

2001-10-08 Thread Beverly Woods

Well, what Janice says in one of the original messages (2nd below) indicates
a DC output, not AC. So polarity remains a major issue, along with voltage.

Beverly

Your question is only pertinent to DC output adapters, not the AC
output type to which the previous question referred.
 Paul

I am still trying to figure out whether or not I can use one of my power
adapters on my PowerCD. Someone posted the numbers from his PowerCD adapter
as follows:

Straight from my PowerCD AC Adapter:

Class 2 Power Supply
P4824-1010-DC
Model No. H0037
Input: AC 120V 60Hz 22W
Output: DC 10V , 1.0A (-)--C--(+)

I was working from memory when I stated it took 6 batteries. My error. I
sold my PowerCD drive on eBay in late '99 (for $475 :^) so it's been a while
since I played with it.

polarized opinions

2001-10-08 Thread Martin

IF the + symbol is indeed connected to the center dot with a line,
then the post ( or the hole in the plug barrel ) is positive.

Just because a capital C faces right, doesn't mean the positive
symol is on the right, and connected to the center dot, on
Fabian's power adaptor. Yes, it LOOKS that way in his diagram, but
he has not confirmed that.

Incidentally, I have been repairing consumer electronic items for
over twenty years now, and I have found that there is no standard
for polarity on power plugs. About half of those I've encountered
have been hot (+) on the pin, and half hot on the barrel.

You cannot assume that the center post is positive. Find out for
certain, before plugging in an adaptor. On a DC power adaptor,
polarity IS important.

I've been told by an Apple rep at CompUSA that you can do both of these
(and also wireless) via a PCMCIA card...

So, is negative what you mean by hot? Hot refers to AC, AFAIK.

storage for backing up 2300c

2001-10-08 Thread tbrock

I thought I had enough offline storage for backing up our 2300c, but
that is not the
case.

How difficult is it to drop in another harddrive for our 7300? Does the
unit have to
be SCSI, ATA, or IDE, EIDE,? Another 5 gigs would probably do it. Does
anyone have
something like this to sell? Thanks for your replies! Thomas The Kinders

Re: PB1400 USB options

2001-10-08 Thread Remy Davison

I'd like to find out what options there are to add USB or possibly Firewire
capability to a 1400cs (with Sonnet G3 upgrade). What kind of add-ons are
available? I'd like to hear from those who might have these accessories
how well (or not) they work.

I'd considering getting an MP3 player and obviously need to deal with the
connectivity issue.
None, I'm afraid. AFA USB/FW are concerned, the 1400 is a dead end.
