Ethernet and PB3400

2002-03-27 Thread Bo-Göran Wallner

Hi!

Have a question regrded my PB 3400c, I recently got this machine and haven't
done very much background "research" on it. Are there any known problems
with the inbuilt ethernet and MacOS 8.5 that I ought to know about?
Yesterday I tried to use ethernet but it didn't work at first, I then
reinstalled MacOS 8.5 and after configuring to the right DHCP server I was
online. Maybe some files where missing, the guy who owned it before me used
the modem, reinstalling the OS usually is the least timeconsuming. However,
after installing Netscape (was running IE before) and restarting I couldn't
browse the web any longer. Looked at the TCP/IP settings and they where
still the same (well... marking DHCP isn't that hard). Anyone who has a
clue?

/Bo

Had the same problem with my 5300 and a couple of IIci's as well after
an OS re-install. Went to the options--Mail and News Prefs--and checked
"Use Internet Config." Set up Internet Config, signed on, signed off
and went back to Options and unchecked "Use Internet Config."

It's worked fine since then. Netscrape seems to suffer digital
Alzheimer's, and forgets passwords, and whatall, and keeps you off the
Web.

networked Epson printer

2002-03-27 Thread Paul Griffith

I recently jumped through a lot of hoops trying to make an Epson
700 and 740 print on my Ethernt/Appletalk network. It cannot be done
with just the Epson hardware with these printers.

The shareware "Epsonshare" does work, but is time-limited: it only
works for12 hours or so. By the time you get it set and running it is
sending up shareware messages.
USB Printer Sharing requires you to use TCP/IP and System 9.1.It
seemed quite complicated to set up.

According to Epson's tech's,printer sharing should be built into
all of the newer models. It is found in the "Chooser' menu just like
with Apple printers. If you have this option, all that you have to do
is install the printer driver on the all of the computer that you
want to print from and select that printer in the Chooser.

My solution to the network printer problem was to get a Color
Stylewriter 2400 at Goodwill for cheap.

My first PowerBook 520

2002-03-27 Thread Victor Nazarian

Hi there Dave,
Well, what you have there is Apple's finest laptop design until they got
to the G3 Wall Street. The AAUI plug in the back will support full
10baseT ethernet over RJ-45 cable but also can be hooked up to almost
all of the other network wiring varients by way of Apple AAUI adaptors.
I've even read about (but never seen) a Fiber connector. I've seen the
SCSI adaptors available in CompUSA and they can be had from almost any
Mac shop and on line. If you have problems tracking one down let me
know. If you get an external Hard Drive you will indeed have lots of
fun. That little unit can do about 70% of what a server of its day could
do and more hard drive space is always nice to have. The external video
adaptor should be able to support 640 X 480 in Thousands of colors no
problem but unfortunately those adaptors are a bit overexpensive. I
guard the one I use very carefully. I believe the unit will also support
multi-sync monitors up to 800 X 600 screen size in 256 colors also. This
should work with even run of the mill Sony and NEC monitors so long as
you have those cheap little (no switches needed) VGA to RGB plug
adaptors. They used to give them away for free with NEC monitors. You
can also plug in an full size Apple ADB Keyboard which is dirt cheap and
a regular Apple ADB mouse.
The Serial port will support a 56K modem also if you want to use one.

Since you're short on hard drive space I recommend installing System
7.6.1 instead of 8.1 and then you should have enough room for Netscape
4.05 and MS-Word 6.0.1/95. I have these installers.

Hi all,
I am a Mac novice and was recently given a PowerBook 520. I bought a
power adapter through eBay for it and was able to get it up and running.

Seems to have a 25 MGH Motorola processor 8.1 OS and a maybe a 120 MB
hard Drive. The more I discover about it the more intrigued I get, I
just ordered a AAUI transceiver to try to connect it to a RJ45 then to
my internet cable. I was wondering if I should get an external 9GB SCSI

Hard Drive that I see all over EBay, but then I need to hunt down a SCSI

adapter from my Power book. I was able to find a Apple color Monitor
that I may be able to plug the Power Book into if once again I can find
a video connector for it. I wondered did they ever make a docking
station for this model. The problem I see is that I have no room on my
hard drive to install Netscape or Internet explorer without using
external storage. Is this worth the learning experience or am I taking
a laptop and converting it to a desktop? I wondered what places are out

there with downloads (preferably free) All I have on this is MS Word5.1.

Thanks
Dave

Thanks again, MD, I suspected the FPU would almost even it all up. I figure
the 280's lack of sound was probably due to the loose cable that's been
described before, but I wasn't confident enough to crack the case. Now that
I've got a fully functioning 270C (which also seems to have a good PRAM and
is keeping correct time and date, which the 280 wasn't), I don't know if
I'll even try opening the 280C at this point (the 270C only cost me $50,
which is probably a good investment compared to the amount of time and
aggravation involved in fixing the 280C). I think I'll probably just leave
the 280C in the DuoDock all the time and use it as a desktop.

Thanks to you (and everyone else who replied) for all the help.

Ciao,

Jenni,

Try replying to one of the emails. Then see which of your email addresses
is being used to reply from. After that, send your request to unsubscribe to
the address Dave provided:

You should then get an automated response asking you to confirm that you
really do want to be removed at which time you reply to that and you're
done.

As far as I know, yes, it is, indeed, completely out of the question. I've
been interested in this, too. All the Mac experts say the slot on the 1400
is 16 bit, i.e., there is _no way_ to get a 32 bit card to work at all, so
USB and Firewire devices are out of the question as far as the PC card slot
goes. Disappointing, I know.

You can use modem cards that conform to the PCMCIA 2.1 standard and flash
cards and hard disk cards that conform to the ATA standard. That's pretty
much it. Sorry I couldn't bring better news; please don't shoot the
messenger.

Best regards,

I still want to know exactly how you got it to format to Mac. Mine seems to
be hung up in some state where I can no longer see anything on it in the
PowerBook when it is in the CF PCMCIA holder, but I can "see" the CF card on
my iMac when it is in a CFreader (I have a VST Tri-Media reader). A friend
of mine, who has a Kodak digital camera, and also "see" the card in her
camera, so it is still an MS-DOS card and the supposed reformatting did not
happen. This has been going on ever since I tried to format it as a Mac disk
in the cardcage in my 520. I cannot see anything I insert into the cardcage,
so maybe something is wrong with the cardcage?

What DHCP system are you trying to connect to? I know on our network if
you tried that it wouldn't work, because we have to register your
hardware address with our DHCP server before you'll get an address.

If it's your own home network, that's really unlikely to be a problem
though. (And even with some rather clueless academic and corporate
networks, too...they'll let anyone with an ethernet connection connect
up. )

For ethernet to work you need to have the extensions:

Apple Built-in Ethernet
Ethertalk Phase 2
Possibly Apple Enet
Possibly Apple Ethernet XX where XX would refer to your 3400.

The possibly's are because I'm looking at my 6214's extensions which has
8.6 installed.

On my 540 it's only Apple built-in ethernet and Ethertalk Phase 2 under
system 8.1

I would suggest sticking the card in a camera and then reformat it, just in
case the 520 did something subtle to the card.

Then put it in your Tri-Media reader, select the card on the desktop, choose
erase from the Special Menu, and make sure to select Mac formatting. This
should create a Mac volume that you can then use.

The PowerBook 3400 (and Kanga G3) have an additional extension just for the
combination modem/ethernet card. It won't work without it. I can't recall
the exact name (it's been a while) but it's something like
"PowerBook G3/3400 modem".

I seem to recall that the name of the extension DOES NOT include the word
ethernet even though the extension is required for ethernet to function.
Oddly, I think the modem will work without the extension though, as the card
defaults to modem vs. ethernet without the extension installed.

I would guess that it was missing when you got the 3400 and doing a clean
install of OS8.5 put it where it belonged. I would also recommend updating
to OS8.6 (a free download which I believe is still available) as it is more
stable than 8.5.

As for the DHCP issue, I'm at a loss. Sorry.

Re: flash memory

2002-03-27 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I think the key is to have PC file exchange turned off or not present. Then
the Mac cannot read the MS dos disk and will automatically ask to reformat
the disk or eject it.

I accomplished this, by accident, by booting off of an OS 8 floppy, Disk
Tools, and then inserting the CF card in my pb5300.

It reformats and then I just dropped the same system on it that was on the
floppy, I plan on getting a larger one and trying to do a full OS 8.6
install. Right now I am playing with a 16mb card and the Disk Tools system
is only 4mb large. Had to keep the 32mb for use on the digital camera.

I did notice that once I put the system folder on the disk, my HP digital
camera could no longer use the card, or even recognize it. Sobeware.

g'luck,

joseph

Just given a Powerbook Duo 2300c, what do I have?

2002-03-27 Thread Eric Hawkins

Hi everyone,

I have just been given a Powerbook Duo 2300c, with a docking station. I am Mac
ignorant, I have
never before owned a Mac. There is no power supply for the PB, and it will not engage
in the
docking station. I do not even know if it works. When I power on the docking station
it makes a
clicking sound, and the LED on front does not come on. I think its power supply is
bad? The PB has
a built-in modem. I can only guess what clock speed, and hard disk size are, as well
as MacOS
version.

My questions:
(1) where can I get a 24VDC @1.5A DC power supply that will work with this laptop?
(2) I want to connect this PB to my home network that consists of a RH7 Linux box,
several WIN98
boxes, a WIN2000 box and a Sparc10 Sun workstation all behind a Linksys NAT that
interfaces to the
world through a cable modem. Can it be done? How could I do this without using a
docking station?
Is there a smaller docking station that I can use, the inoperable one I have is huge.
(3) I use Samba to exchange information between UNIX and Windows (does not work too
well for
WIN2000). What hoops will I have to jump through to get the Mac to play with Linux or
Windows?
(4) Can I interface to my network through the Appletalk (or whatever it is)
connection?Thanks in
advance for your help! I am excited to be using a Mac, I am no fan of the Microsoft
Windows
operating system.

Any links to information will be greatly appreciated!

What's the largest RAM chip sold for the PB3400C?

2002-03-27 Thread Matthew D. O'Conner

What's the largest chip currently being sold for the PB3400C?

According to everymac.com, a 128Mb chip is the largest but I think
that was the max. you could buy when the sold the 3400C new. Are
larger ones sold now?

Any suggestions on where to buy one?

Sincerely,

Congrats on the 2300. Nice freebee!

The ticking is indeed a dead power supply (know as the tick-of-death) so
it's history unless you can get a knew PS.

The 2300 is 100MHz PowerPC with 603e processor. It the first and only
PowerMac Duo. It has at least 8MB RAM (more if it has been upgraded) and at
least a 750MB HD or the optional 1.1GB.

Check out more info on the PowerBook Duos here including info on the
DuoDocks and a MiniDock.

You can find tons of stuff on eBay for the Duos. Just go to the Apple
section in computers and search the word "Duo".

You might also want join the PowerBook Duo/2400 list to talk with folks
specifically about the Duos.

Enjoy!

Lots of places sell parts www.powerbookparts.com, www.macresq.com are two.

There are the rare ethernet minidocks, and appletalk to Ethernet
coverters like Asante's EtherPrint
http://www.asante.com/products/adapters/asanteprint/index.html

or the regular dock.

Nope: use netatalk http://www.umich.edu/~rsug/netatalk/ or CAP
http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/appletalk/cap.html

(And Samba works perfectly fine with Win2k...what problems are you having?)

Actually, the ticking is generally one cap that's gone bad. You can replace
that cap and all will be well. I've done it on both my docs.

I'm forgetting the details and can't find the link, but I'm sure someone
has the page that describes the process...

Re: What's the largest RAM chip sold for the PB3400C?

2002-03-27 Thread Tom Roth

To the best of my knowledge and according to Apple, max RAM for the PB3400 is 144MB
and there is 16MB on the motherboard. That leaves you with the 128MB RAM module.

difference between 540c, 1400c, & 3400c keyboards?

2002-03-27 Thread Matthew D. O'Conner

I just read an article on lowendmac.com that said that the 3400c had
the same keyboard as the 500 series all of which, the article
claimed, were inferior to the 1400 keyboard.

I'm looking around for a replacement for my 540C because I don't like
the keyboard - I guess I was spoiled by my PB180.

Was that author talking about the layout, feel, and/or mounting of
the keyboard? I don't mind the fell of the 540C so much as the dumb
way it was mounted (there is no mount in the middle area of the
board).

***
The 1400 series had a metal keyboard frame, like the 180 did, though the
action is very different. It is probably the best of the non-G3
powerbook keyboards, though I've never been a fan of the 1400 series.

The 1400 series were fairly heavy and bulky, while only offering an
11.3" screen (to its credit, the largest available at the time on a
PowerBook). They also share the RAM limit of 64MB with the 5300 series,
which for a machine with a processor upgrade path, is very low.

My recommendation for a used PowerBook are as follows, a 5300ce if money
is the primary limiting factor. These have a very nice 10.4" screen
with 800x600 resolution, are compact, reliable once through the Apple
REA (and as long as the original 7.5.2 OS is avoided) and despite the
keyboard being of the same type action as the 500 series, they feel MUCH
better. I would find an owner and try one (3400/Kanga G3 is the EXACT
same keyboard and mounting as the 5300, and feels just as good).

If money is not quite as tight, the 3400 is a great PowerBook, with a
fast processor right out of the box, much higher RAM ceiling, and the
ability to upgrade to CardBus 32 bit PC card slots, which will give you
the ability to add USB, FireWire or any other new technologies you can
think of.

My personal favorite, though they fetch a premium, is the 2400c. These
are essentially Japanese market machines with English keyboards,
manufactured (high quality) by Sony, and are smaller and lighter than
any other portable Macintosh except for the Duos. Many users had a hard
time deciding on keeping a 2400c or upgrading to the new (small) iBook.
This PB has the exact same 10.3" screen as the 5300ce (just as nice in
this application) and while the keyboard is a bit smaller than usual, it
is VERY nice.

Of course, the current iBook is VERY attractive, and I can say from my
PC laptop experience, a DVD/CDRW combo drive is such a wonderful thing
that once you have it, you will never look back.

Good Luck,
Andrew

Yes, but the lady in question is having a problem that does not need
to be complicated by telling her to get a Mac again. She, as anyone,
would be happier and more grateful to people who helped her out of her

I know you probably meant well but think about this:

Re: Re[2]: HELP!

2002-03-27 Thread victoria

Hi thats the type of response that i thought i might get back
I take it that she has moved to windows well if so and she still cannot get
off list then all she needs to do is block the mail sent from the lists at
the server.

does not take long and she can also do it by phone rarther than online if
her isp has a help desk or reset her prefs folder to filter the lists mail
to a seperate box and then all she has to do is delete it (or if she has the
urge later maybe in a month or so have a read of some )before she deletes .

and really this is not a burden also noone is stuck if they are a free
person.

2002-03-27 Thread Dan Knight

Twice a year we run a pair of surveys -- Best of the Mac Web and Rest of
the Mac Web. The second survey covers 50 sites not included in the "Best"
poll, and the best of these will move up to the "Best" survey in October.

Rest of the Mac Web has a lot of good low-end sites like Mac512K, System
6 Heaven, the pickle's Low-end Mac FAQ, etc. I urge all of you to take a
few minutes and share your opinion of the site's your familiar with --
and maybe discover some new ones.

*

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Macs (I own two and am on
this list), but I think the evangelism crap is just that, crap. What
matters most to me in a computer are stability, function, and
versatility. Until I got a new assignment at work I rarely traveled out
of town, but was traveling AROUND town all day, every day, and then off
to school at night. For that purpose, my thin and light Toshiba Portege
was the best thing since sliced bread (the new Portege 2000 is even a
pound lighter).

I find myself doing more traveling now, and with a lot of downtime
sitting in airports, and so a built-in DVD drive (combo drive is better,
as long as I'm going optical) is a must. Of course in the lightweight,
full-featured category there are many more choices. I ruled out the
TiBook on account of bulk, and have narrowed my choice down to the
Toshiba Portege 4000 and the iBook 600MHz. The iBook is cheaper and
runs an extra hour on the battery, but the Portege is better equipped,
its optical drive being swappable with a second battery. It also has
two real speakers, IR and like the iBook, 802.11 wireless built in.

Money isn't the main factor (I'm reimbursed) for hardware, but software
provided is only Windows 95 and Office 97 for Windows, meaning I use my
own. I already own Windows XP professional and Office XP professional,
so going with an iBook would add the expense of another copy of Office,
which makes the two cost the same.

In the end, the Portege wins for me, though not without spending a lot
of time playing with my classmates' iBooks and OSX. For me its just a
better fit.

I am glad you like your 550c though, that is one VERY cool machine.

Andrew

The Apple removable module is actually only 8 megs, with the other 8
megs soldered on the motherboard. I have a theory that if you take
off the apple 8 meg card, everything else will work. Sometimes
having 3 RAM modules makes for a finnicky PB1400.

56 MB if my theory is correct.

In theory, yes. I cant think of a reason why a CDRW with the proper
backplane connector would not work. I cant prove it, but for
example, I am using a Teac 24x CD ROM in place of the 12x CD ROM that

The best way to do it is to pull off the two round caps on the screen
hinge. Then, you can pull the top plastic up by the to little "tab"
thingies on the sides towards the back and pull forwards towards you.
Slides right off no problem :)

Memory for PB 190 and PB 5300

2002-03-27 Thread Donna Hood Pointer

Can someone illuminate me why PB 5300 56MB module would not work in a PB
190. From my emails with memoryx.xom ( below) they evidently are the same
physical format. he says it would fit, but it would not work. Is there
something about addressing that precludes this, like the SE/30 's not being
able to see beyond 16MB (I think) without MODE32?

Re: Memory for PB 190 and PB 5300

2002-03-27 Thread Wayne Yarnall

Donna,

Check Apple Spec for limits of memory for computers.

The 190 is the same physical shape of the 5300 but the mother boards are different.

The 190 board is designed for 32 MB. max memory module and has either 4 mb or 8 MB on
the mother board.

The 5300 is limited to 64 MB ram total with 8 or 16 on the mother board, so max
expansion module is 56 MB.

It has nothing to do with addressing ranges, just the design of the logic boards.

Wayne

Re: Memory for PB 190 and PB 5300

2002-03-27 Thread Jim Arnott

All I can say is that sometimes it works, sometimes it don't. I have a
190, a 5300 passive matrix and a 5300 active matrix. I have a 24mb (?)
module that works just fine in the 190 and the passive matrix 5300. Same
module 'sad macs' the active matrix machine. There IS a difference...
And the memory suppliers usually note that there is a difference...

Re: Ethernet and PB3400

2002-03-27 Thread Robert Eye

It's not the OS in general, it's Open Transport in particular. Older
versions of OT did not work and play well with DHCP.

Search Apple'sKnowledge Base for "DHCP and Open Transport" and follow
the recommendations.

Actually, to be completely pedantic about it, Open Transport played perfectly
well with the DHCP standard, it's just that DHCP server implementors (most
notably one large monopolistic company in Redmond) played it loose with the
rules, so OT didn't play well with them.

That said, I'm pretty sure the problem was fixed by the version of OT that
comes with 8.5...

Re: HELP!

2002-03-27 Thread Andrew

I also own a travelmate 513 that has been upgraded with 256mb ram and a 40gb
hdd it also has an add on dvd and floppy and 1 pc card slot which i attach a
freecom cdrw to modem is built in and it is run by a pentium 3 800mhz
processor it is about 1 1/2 cms thick and has a 12' screen and weighs less
that my duo 2300c.

*

Sounds like a nice laptop. I already own a thin and light, the Toshiba
Portege 3490, it is .8 inches thick, has an 11.3" screen and weighs 3.4 lbs.
The replacement model is .7 inches thick, weighs 2.6 lbs and has a 12"
screen.

The debate is whether to bite the bullet and get one with a built-in optical
drive, or to keep my Portege 3490, which like your Acer, I have external DVD
and CDRW drives for. My current machine is a Pentium III 700MHz, 192 RAM
and 20GB hard drive, with the modem built-in and a 10/100 lan card in the
dual PC slots (Xircom realport). What I like better about my machine and
the Portege 4000 with the built-in drives is the mouse, they both have the
eraserhead pointing stick, which I prefer over the touchpad.

Ah well, so many choices. I've had excellent luck with Toshiba though, so I
would probably stay loyal if I buy another PC.

Re: flash memory and PB 5xx

2002-03-27 Thread Don Silver

The problem I share with Donna is that the PB 5xx
needs PCMCIA extensions to recognize its removable
PCMCIA cage--with all extensions off, you can't use
the cage, much less reformat the CF card. Like Donna,
I've got a CF card, but my PB won't recognize it at
all, so I can't reformat it. The card does work in my
camera, though.

Cheers,
Don Silver

Hey Mikie,
Save the evangelical bullsh*t for someone who believes it. I too work with
them all day, and my Crash-Master 6000 hasn't ever crashed yet.
