I think I fried my 5300
It was bound to happen. I'd been in and out of the PB so many times (trying to work out why the bloody Lapis card was causing it to crash, swapping hard drives, memory etc), that I got complacent. I managed to get it on once, but just got a 'sad mac' (codes were lots of zeros with an F on the end, and lots of zeros with a 1 on the end). If not, may I suggest making it open source? I know that programming by committee can really slow things down and cause feature creep, but maybe after you've finished the initial release you could open it up to the community. That way you could get some serious muscle behind it. An open source list manager may be pretty useful. Once I have all the pieces in place, I plan on making it open source. I don't want to get involved with programming by committee until it's time to tweak and improve the basics. My current plan is to release it as open source shareware on the honor system. Terms of use will explicity prohibit use for sending unsolicited messages. Will probably allow any nonprofit or personal management of a single mailing list for free. Commercial users and those with multiple lists will probably be requested to pay $5/year per mailing list. On 5/30/03 3:59 AM, victoria brandon posted: Dan Knight proposed a feature that would: We've had problems on some lists with one person becoming very dominant. The number of postings per day wouldn't be fixed. Probably no less than three, but it could go as high as maybe 20-25% of all postings in the past 24 hours. This one will need fine tuning in the field. The goal is to let the lists function well without allowing a single individual to take over the list. Of course the privilege of unlimited posting can lead to abuses, but it hasn't happened on *this* list -- quite the contrary, the most knowledgeable members seem to contribute the most frequently, and often in little bursts of helpfulness as they try to solve three or four people's problems simultaneously. It seems a shame to squelch this. Could things be set up so that postings over a certain number *might* (at the option of a listnanny, say) be cut off, rather than having it happen automatically? Thus providing a big stick to wave at malefactors if needed without interfering with normal give and take. It has to be automatic, because we just don't have list managers available 24/7 to do things manually. The exact number will vary based on how busy the list is. If there are 100 postings per day, the minimum will be much higher than 3. If there are less than 10 postings per day, 3 might be a very reasonable limit. I have an old PowerBook 170 that I=92m trying to resurrect but it has an LCD problem. =A0 It has light shadowy tinges to the extremes of the display which get darker and grow inwards after a while of use, so much so that it looks like you have tunnel vision with only the middle 2/3 of the screen (an oval in the middle) visible. =A0 Is this a common problem, and is it fixable (other than replacing the LCD)? I used to think that this could be a fixable thing, but folks on this list have convinced me that it isn't. The best working theory seems to be that the edge seals are imperfect, allowing contaminants to poison the LCD material (water is bad for liquid crystals, so the contaminant may just be water). The effect appears to be temperature sensitive, explaining why the display starts off looking okay, then gets worse as the day wears on. People have reported this effect with 1xx and 5xx series displays, and it wouldn't surprise me if others exhibit the problem as well. I would love to get my hands on some defective samples to run various experiments, so if anyone on this list happens to have some lying around and also happens to live near Stanford Univ., drop me a line. Sorry to offer so little hope. Barring a breakthrough in reversing the contamination, it looks like replacement is the only real solution. --Tom -- Prof. Thomas H. Re: netscape 7 hangs on a 3400 ?
the beauty of tabs is that you don't have 400 windows open. Floating around, each one smaller than the last, having to move them around to get to the one underneath (unless you use the window menu). Tabs are very handy. Kind of like IE Mac's placeholder only much more efficient and better laid out. For those with NS 6+ issue. Trash your Netscape preferences and try again. That clears up 90% of the hanging issue. Also, the download and redraw issue from 4.x version is due to divs/layers. Any real html programmer would have added code to prevent it (Dreamweaver even adds it by default when you insert a layer). 6 7+ are vastly different beasts among themselves let alone a complete re-write of the 4.x codebase. 7 is Mozilla 1.0 based. Very fast pageloads, very fast response. Mozilla 1.4rc1 is even faster. 1.5 will challenge Safari in speed as well. If all you do is surf pages, use IE. It is sufficient. Don't use any Netscape below 6.1 else you'll suffer from bugs and performance, much like OS X, 10.1 is the lowest version that isn't completely washed. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Amen Bruce! The DOM Inspector, Venkmen (JavaScript debugger), tabs Mozilla/NS rocks! Though mainly for developers and those that do more than just browse the web. I depend on Mozilla 99% of the time for work and play. NOTHING on the Mac side can come close to all the technologies available. By that I mean, Mozilla is the IE Windows for the Mac. It has all the fancy objects that IE only lets the Windows users have that businesses rely on to build app. Safari is great and fast, but doesn't offer the meat that Mozilla has to offer businesses and developers. Not saying everyone should use Moz/NS though. Just don't knock it and the hard work the developers put in on it daily, mostly free too. Without it, Mac browsing and Mac web applications for business is a joke as no other browser offers the tools. Re: Forthcoming list software (restrictions on number ofpostings)
In response to my suggestion that Could things be set up so that postings over a certain number *might* (at the option of a listnanny, say) be cut off, rather than having it happen automatically? Thus providing a big stick to wave at malefactors if needed without interfering with normal give and take. Dan Knight wrote: It has to be automatic, because we just don't have list managers available 24/7 to do things manually. The exact number will vary based on how busy the list is. If there are 100 postings per day, the minimum will be much higher than 3. If there are less than 10 postings per day, 3 might be a very reasonable limit. It sounds like the limitations proposed will be flexible enough to fit the eventualities, but the kind of arrangement I had vaguely in mind was not constant monitoring, but rather a proviso that postings over x per day [or whatever formula was decided upon] are subject to rejection, followed by a discretionary posting-too-much warning sent to an individual who seemed to be turning into a list-hog, which could then be backed up by turning on rejection mechanism aimed at that particular person which would automatically restrict his/her postings in the future. Re: I think I fried my 5300
It was bound to happen. I'd been in and out of the PB so many times (trying to work out why the bloody Lapis card was causing it to crash, swapping hard drives, memory etc), that I got complacent. Last night, I was performing what I thought would be my final swap on the machine, when it all went a bit odd. The power board started whisling when the battery was plugged in, the power light on top of the screen comes on, but it won't switch on at all... I managed to get it on once, but just got a 'sad mac' (codes were lots of zeros with an F on the end, and lots of zeros with a 1 on the end). I'm figuring that I've either blown the powerboard or main board. Argh! Just as it all seemed to be coming together, too :-( Any ideas? - I suppose I'm now looking for a 5300 with dead screen / drive etc to scrap for parts. green light of death GLOD ??? Re: PB170 Tunnel Vision
Tom/Roger, Thanks for your prompt replies. I also have a PB140 of the same vintage (and from the same 'Dreaded Previous Owner') as the PB170, and its LCD has no problems. (I know it's also an active-matrix in the 170 vs. passive in the 140.) The backlight in the 170 is very bright - just like new and the LCD starts off looking 100%. The darkening occurs quite rapidly over about 15 mins. I thought at first it was due to heat from the backlight so I turned the b/l off and left it overnight, but the tunnel vision remained. Tom's theory of contamination sounds right to me, although living in Australia I have no way of getting the screen to you. I also presume it would be a destructive test to verify the theory? The aforementioned 'DPO' told me that the 170 used to refuse to startup properly so he heated it with a hair dryer and when it got warm it burst into life. I have later pinpointed this to a faulty power supply plug (the one that plugs into the PB) on the wall adapter - it had a hairline open circuit which closed when heated. I have no doubt that this heating has had an adverse affect on the LCD. Regards, ...Steve -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Mac Portable hard drives
Hi all, First, I apologize if this is off topic, but from what I read on Low End Mac it is acceptable here, I am sorry if I am wrong, but I had to try as I know there are many folks here with much more knowledge than I have on any Mac! Anyway, I recently acquired a hard drive adapter cable (the one that Micromac sells! Before i go mucking something up, I wanted to ask if anyone had any knowledge of what type of hard drive I can use in the Mac portable with this adapter. I understand that the Portable uses hard drives with different specs than the standard hard drives found in most Macs. The hard drive that came with it ( Conner CP 3045...I believe)does not work, so i wanted to try this. The person i got it from said that I should take care in which hard drive i use, but didn't know which ones might work! If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Up to you of course, but may I suggest you give the 2300 a try... 68k code has never had any problems running on a PPC in my experience, and anything coded 'FAT' (ie, both PPC and 68k) will be remarkably improved in speed I'd say... Need SupraExpress 56e SP modem script-- please help!!
Hi List, I've just about pulled out the remaining hair on my scalp... And I may start yanking my scalp off my head soon! To spare you the gory details, and to make a long story short: I've tried my very best to find a script for this modem to work with my pb 1400; its a SupraExpress SP 56e external modem; I had it working with my pb some time ago, but I can't find the script anywhere on my desktop hard drive nor my pb hard drive; and my search for a driver/script for it on the web has been extremely frustrating. I've been to drivers.com and modem-drivers.com, and I get a huge runaround, I even find the file, but when I try to download, it sends me back to the home page. I have registered, and all of the other hoops you are required to jump through. I've tried the supra/ diamond multimedia site; they no longer even list legacy software for people like me to download. I am truly pissed. I'm hoping some nice pb'er has this modem script in their modem script file and can email it to me. If you have this modem, or ever had it, you may be my hero (or heroine.) Please help if you are able. I will be eternally grateful. Sid in South Louisiana. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Subject: Dead 140 Afternoon all New poster I have a PowerBook 140 that (after sitting in a closet for a couple of years) won't boot up - no chimes, no drive whirr, nothin' either on battery or the cord or both. Have you tried resetting the power management settings? Apple has a til on it and for the life of myself, I can not remember how to do it offhand despite owning six 1xx machines some in various states of completeness. Surely someone will know offhand but otherwise, apple does have a til on resetting the power management settings on older powerbooks and the 1xx series is in there somewhere. I have: - Tried three different main batteries and three different power cords. A PowerBook 160 will boot from the cord with or without two of the three batteries (the third battery will stop it from booting up as well) Resetting power management on the 160 will fix that as will battery amnesia which will help to recondition the battery after repetitive uses such the powerbook may be able to run by itself on solely the battery and at the least get the machine to recognize the battery. - Replaced the lithium battery inside with a fresh 3V one. - Tried to search around both Google and this list's archives. There was some mention of a fuse - where? I need to know myself in order to replace one on my frankenstein 145 top and 145b bottom... Any other suggestions? Brian PS If it is toast - how many components can I use as spares for the 160? ram, drives, modem, screen, keyboard, trackball? -Ram from a 160 is plenty fast for a 140 but I do not think the 140 will take the ram from the 160 with a slightly lower (faster) nanoseconds access time spec. -Hard drive is definitely a check as they are quite expensive for their age. -Modem should work as well as the the keyboard, floppy drive, and trackball assembly. -I do not know about the screen as the only time I have performed a screen swap, both powerbooks (donor and patient) were from the 140, 145, 145b group of powerbooks which meant that they would obviously work. Re: WTT 5300 Ram
Hi everyone I have one 56 MB ram chip for 5300 that I would like to trade for 48 MB of ram for a 5300ce. The 56MB works great in the 5300cs. It only has 8 MB on the motherboard where the 5300ce comes with 16. Thanks Jim -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Need SupraExpress 56e SP modem script-- please help!!
Hi Guys, In case any benevolent souls wish to look to see if you have the script I need, it would most likely be a file called something like SupraExpress Sp or SupraExpress SP 33.6/56k and it would be residing in the modem scripts folder within the extension folder within your system folder. I hope that it might be one of the standard modem scripts included with Mac OS software that is pre-system 9. Maybe if you're running 8.6, or even one of the earlier versions of Mac OS like 8 or 8.1, 8.5, you may have that script in your modem script folder. I hope you do-- I am very peeved that Diamond Multimedia simply decided to no longer even keep these legacy modem drivers on their hard drive-- I mean, what is so hard for them that they can't devote a few MB of server space to store these files? Argghh! I'm glad their home office is not here in my hometown. I might go postal on them tomorrow... Re: Forthcoming list software (restrictions on number of postings)
Hear, Hear! Excellent suggestion. Hope they consider it. It sounds like the limitations proposed will be flexible enough to fit the eventualities, but the kind of arrangement I had vaguely in mind was not constant monitoring, but rather a proviso that postings over x per day [or whatever formula was decided upon] are subject to rejection, followed by a discretionary posting-too-much warning sent to an individual who seemed to be turning into a list-hog, which could then be backed up by turning on rejection mechanism aimed at that particular person which would automatically restrict his/her postings in the future. duo 230 screens
it's probably normal, but i'd like to ask those familiar with the duo 230 screens always had problems. specifically, some vertical and horizontal ghosting, and problems in gray scale mode, specifically at 26 grays there is a lot of noise in the display. i'm assuming this is normal because of the use of a passive lcd, but if it's not i'd like to know before i trade any of them to other people as i'd hate to send a good screen that really wasn't (i recently got a number of incomplete duo's, if any one needs duo 230 parts contact me off list). -- Philip Stortz -- To be nobody but yourself when the whole world is trying its best night and day to make you everybody else is to fight the hardest battle any human being will ever fight. -- E.E. quick tip: netscape 7 hangs on a 3400 ? (works now)
i was able to get Netscape 7 up an running on my 3400, began trashing Prefs until it worked, thx i agree bout the TAB'ed windows, don't knock it till you try it. no smaller windows each new window and trying to find the open window you want quick tip, NS7, IE5.1 and NS4.8 all offer menu and keyboard shortcuts to cycle you to the next browser window/tab. easy to walk through the stuff you have open. being the lazy person i am i programmed one of the buttons on my kensington trackball with the keyboard shortcut so the next window/tab is just one click away jim Eric L. Strobel wrote: Does it still do that idiot redrawing every time it gets done loading a page? No. Also Netscape 7 (AKA Mozilla 1.1 is a complete, from the ground-up rewrite of the entire program. The *only* thing it shares in common with NS 4.x is the name. However, it takes somewhat more computing horsepower and memory than the old Netscape. BTW, I'm not so sure I see what the big deal of tabbed windows is. In IE I can open a link into a new window that's behind my other windows. Don't knock it until you've tried it. Tabbed browsing is addictively useful, particuarly when doing searches. (I'm in Mozilla about 4-7 hours of any given day, as it's my e-mail and browser...depending on what development I'm doing...we use the browser as the client for all our database stuff, so I'm in a browser a LOT) And IE just plain sucks donkey parts under OSX. It's like Microsoft deliberately tried to see how many ways they could screw it up. Mozilla/Netscape will be taken off my computers when you pry them out of my cold dead fingers... -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Dead 140
Brian, The fuse you speak of is on the motherboard next to the battery connector, it is a 5amp 125v surface mount. Usually the machine will bootup with both a charged battery and AC adapter plugged in, have you tried Booting up from a Norton utilities boot disk or an Apple disk tools disk? I have tested, functioning mother and daughter boards that I'll let go for $10.00 for the pair plus shipping. All the hardware will work on a 160 as will the memory card, I'm not sure about the screen, but I think not. Re: Can you use a PowerBook 1400 while lid is closed? (usingvideo-out)
Howdy. I had to try this myself just to see if it works. And it does :) I have an Apple 8-bit external video card installed in my 1400 and it works like a charm. I just plopped the machine on my desk with the lid down, plugged in the video out cable and an external ADB keyboard. Hit the powe button on the keyboard and it fired up perfectly. The LCD does not come on when the lid is closed, which is very nice. And everything seemed to work properly. Hope this helps :) -nils On Tue, Jun 03, 2003 at 03:34:28AM -0400 or thereabouts, Christopher Kolp wrote: Hello PowerBook users everywhere! However, the PowerBook 1400 wasn't a budget notebook at the time and the video out card supports video mirroring, which seems ideally suited for this application...
