Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2011-08-28 Thread uffe

By chance I a saw a crate full of them at 'media markt' the Hague, nl.
Strange that the shop where I initially bought the squeezebox radio
never bothered to e-mail me about the batteries FINALLY becoming
available.

25 Euro (36 USD). It looks like a small bomb: A bunch of batteries
taped up with black tape, with some wires and a connector sticking out.
Don't try to do air travel with this one!

The ugly black clump can just be squeezed into the belly of the radio
after mating the connector with the radio.

It comes with a whole book full of incomprehensible instructions in a
zillion languages. After throwing these into the bin, I just switched
the radio on. It nicely detected the presence of the battery pack. It's
a bit unusual, and perhaps not best for battery life to be stored fully
charged?, but the pack was already fully charged at purchase.

36 USD for a couple of taped batteries is a bit on the high side, even
for European high tax zones. However, at the bottom of the box, I found
a small remote control unit. Whooo! Now I can switch stations, also
when my PC is not running?. Wrong. The remote control unit is made by
people who never knew what to use it for, or why to add it and never
tried to use it themselves: The small unit can up or down sound. Switch
on or off. But it can't select station on the radio!

The remote control can, however, be used to navigate the menu on the
screen. What's the point of that?? The screen on the radio is so small
that you nearly need to hold the radio in your hand to see what you are
doing. With the radio that close to your face, a remote control has no
use?

I suppose the remote control unit is just a quick fix to justify the
package price, more than anything else. At least I could take out the
small battery and re-use it in my car keys. Careful, there is a gadget
failure hall of fame. This remote control could be a modest contender
there

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=pogue-the-gadget-failure-hall-of-fame

Tried a couple of recharge cycles. Works fine 4-5 hours on a charge,
which is fine for an afternoon in the garden, paint work in the garage,
etc. The radio nicely detects and show re-charging of the battery when
back on power. It could probably run more hours on battery, if the
radio display could dim and cool off, when playing on battery.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT

Battery operated mobility of the radio is now finally available. The
battery pack is a bit expensive, but it fills the long standing gap
nicely. The remote control unit included is useless and rather
unnerving.

The biggest risk I suspect with NiMH rather than LiON batteries is
their leaking and causing corrosion. They could also overheat when
charging but it would have to be quite extreme to do damage. There is
always a tiny risk of explosion but NiMH are much much more stable than
laptop batteries.

I would say though that the overall risk is low but crap batteries are
generally crap they don't hold charge long and don't last many charge
cycles. You may well be replacing them sooner than you thought.

Crappy batteries aren't likely to fry a Squeezebox, as AAs don't put
out much voltage. They just won't power the Squeezebox for very long.

They are, LiON require very much more precise charging circuits and
wouldn't be as easy to swap out as NiMH. The built in charging of the
radio wouldn't work with them.

Its just that cheap ones are usually knock offs that don't last long.
Quality NiMH batteries are worth the extra cost.

I just finished building my pack using the Sanyo 2700 mAh batteries
listed above. Seems to work great. My first test yielded a playing
time of 10 hours 49 minutes (streaming FLACs). Charging took several
hours. Interestingly, the pack slowly heated to 45C which triggered
forced a pause in the charging. Afterwards, the pack fully charged.
I've read that the charging circuit / algorithm is pretty smart and I
believe it!

Pictures and such are here:

Loving the truly portable radio so far!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2011-03-20 Thread mrthreeplates

For what it's worth, the cheapest US source I could find for the Sanyo
2700mah batteries that I could find (incl tax and shipping to CA) was:

http://www.bestbyte.net/merchant/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODStore_Code=BBProduct_Code=BARESAAA27Category_Code=

Worked out to about $3.10 per battery shipped.

I also looked at the LSD 2000mah 2nd generation Sanyo Eneloop's here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00478GE1U/ie=UTF8m=AMEAQY81R6T0Z

The 16 pack is more than I need, but these are good batteries to have
around the house and the price per battery (shipped) is good at $2.50.

I eventually decided against the LSD (Low Self-Discharge) models
because I figured the odds of me leaving the unit unplugged for great
lengths of time are really low. I'd much rather have the extended
battery time for this application. Otherwise, the LSD batteries look
like GREAT choices for general use.

I decided on Sanyo because they seemed to have the best reputation and
real world test results. I could have gone with much cheaper
batteries, but I figured it just wasn't worth saving $10 to risk
getting an inferior battery (especially after going through the trouble
of soldering it up).

I also couldn't find a pre-made Sanyo pack that was nearly as cheap
(although that would have been awesome).

Finally, while I could have gotten batteries with flat tops and/or
solder tabs, I would have had to choose a non-Sanyo brand.

Anyway, batteries and kit are ordered --- Hope it all works out. I'll
be careful assembling it and it should be fun.

The only thing I'm worried about is the charging properties of the
batteries that I've chosen. Hopefully the charging circuit, software
and thermistor will have that all covered.

BTW: I've read that the original Logitech battery has a fuse in it. I
don't see that part reference in the kit. Anyone have any info on it?
Or, has anyone taken apart the Logitech battery to confirm the other
parts / wiring diagram? I'd love to see info on this if someone is
willing to post it!

Thanks,

George

@agillis: Thank you, I have ordered two of your kits.

I am now picking out the batteries. The Sanyo 2700mah cells seem to
really be the best choice. I have found confirmation on these from a
couple of sources:
-
http://www.chip.de/artikel/Megatest-Akkus-fuer-Digicams-und-MP3-Player-AA-AAA-5_29020749.html
-
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=79302p=920843#post920843

I am now contemplating whether to buy this:
http://www.onlybatterypacks.com/showitem.asp?ItemID=12122
or these and build my own:
http://store.batteriesamerica.com/hr-3u2700sanyo-brandultra-long-liferechargeableni-mhbatteries-2700mahcapacity.aspx

I found Sanyo cells cheaper elsewhere but they did not have the solder
tab option included.

I have the following questions if someone can help:
- Does anyone know if that above linked pack comes with a thermistor,
so the only work would be swapping connectors?
- If it does come with a thermistor, could it be the wrong one or
would that not be a concern.
- If it is the wrong one would replacing it with the one which is
coming in the kits I ordered be more work than is worth it?

Thank you all for your opinions/feedback. I really appreciate the help
given in this thread. Now that the kits are on there way I am eager to
get a finished product and am not too picky about how I accomplish it.
Your guidance is appreciated.

Cheers,

orGSD

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2010-12-12 Thread chGSD

My interest in building my own battery pack has stemmed not from the
elevated price of the Logitech one, nor the scarce availability of it
over time.
Rather it has stemmed from the desire to have a longer unplugged
duration so that it could be treated more like a power hungry
smartphone that gets unplugged in the morning and then goes back to
being charged at night. Truthfully wireless gadgetry is attractive to
me to keep less cables out of the reach of the baby. Hence a long
unplugged duration whilst he is out of his crib is attractive.

Most users with home built 2100mah packs seem to claim 10h vs. the 6h
of the factory pack. Using the same math as well as the math from the
german website linked throughout this post, a 2700mah pack could
possibly garner 13h which would be just about perfect for me.

While waiting for the smallgreencomputer.com kit to return to stock, I
have been looking for existing packs which would yield a more
professional looking result.

The previously linked Tenergy 12V pack seems to have been reduced to
2000mah as opposed to 2300mah which some were receiving:
http://www.all-battery.com/12v2000mahnimhbatterypack11606.aspx

This 12V 2600mah pack seems to be too large despite being composed of
AA:
http://www.all-battery.com/12v2600mahnimhbatterypack11620.aspx
(I have contacted them to confirm their measurements)

I found this with thermistor already included, but only 2200mah:
http://www.batteryspace.com/customizenimhbattery12v2200mahwiththermistor10xaa.aspx

And this one seems off by a few mm:
http://www.batteryspace.com/browseproducts/Customized-LiFePO4-Li-Ion-Module--12V-2700-mAh-(32.4Wh--4S2P-Rectangle-Pack--7A-rate-)-with-PCB.HTML

The best pre-made I have found so far is this one:
http://www.onlybatterypacks.com/showitem.asp?ItemID=12122
Sanyo 2700mah cells, which is what I was contemplating using myself.

Best price on those Sanyo cells I have found is here:
http://www.batteryjunction.com/sanyo-aa-2700.html
(Would be about $32.5 pre-shipping for the right quantity)
So only really a $20 savings over buying the pre-made pack from
onlybatterypacks.com

Keeping in mind that the idea of solving this for $50-$75 is fine by
me, what are the best options for having the longest lasting solution
which would still fit within the battery cavity for a clean solution?

I am attaching to this post what I have gathered as the battery cavity
dimensions of the SB Radio that I have.

Thanks everyone for all the information provided in this thread
already, I know it will be invaluable when it comes time to actually
assembling whatever I settle for.

Cheers,

chGSD

Post Scriptum: I realize the Logitech kit comes with a remote, but from
what I have read it is pretty useless compared to the android apps
available, which are working quite well for me at the moment.

If it's like other SB players, on the radio itself, select
settingshome menu and scroll down and you can see the switch to
mysb.com item. Add this to your home menu. But if you're running SbS,
why would you ever want to switch to mysb.com. SbS does everything

turning off shortly after turn on, turning on randomly, art not

Best way to see the issues is to do a search specific to the SB Radio

My understanding (or I should say hope) is that the next firmware

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2010-08-05 Thread ciarmer

Here is my experience ordering the battery pack (I'm in the US)

July 21 - Ordered my battery pack. The site said pre-order now but
when I added the battery to my cart, it said in stock. I thought I
got lucky. My Paypal account was charged the same day.

July 23 - Order status - in process

July 26 - Order status - in process.
I call Logitech. They tell me they got some out but they are out of
stock again but expecting more.

August 4 (yesterday)- Went to the Logitech site. Order status - in
process. The order page shows it as pre-order now. For kicks, I
added another one to the cart and it said in stock. At that point, I
got annoyed and called them again. Gentleman told me it was out of
stock. I asked why they charged my account if it is out of stock. His
response is That's the way paypal works; if you had used a charge
card, we would not have charged your card until it was shipped.

I then asked why the site says in stock when you put the pack in your
cart - isn't that misleading. He said no; you should have believed the
order page which said pre-order now rather than adding it to your
cart. I told him he must be kidding but he wasn't.

He then tells me they are expecting more by the end of August but there
is a backlog and it is possible that even when they come in, I may not
get one.

I then went off on a rant and also mentioned the Firmware 7.5.1 issue
which he was in no mood to hear about. After all that he asked me if
there was anything else he could help me with. I thought to myself
anything else? exactly what have you helped me with?

August 5 (today)- Notification that battery has shipped!!! Coincidence?
I really don't know. Site still says pre-order now.

What a strange way to provide customer service.

Just read up on this thread, a few postings before yours. Logitech Canada
decided it's not worth it. You'll have to let _them_ know they're wrong. Not
this forum, not support, but some Logitech Canada representative. They only
believe in numbers. If _they_ have a number of complaints, it might help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2010-07-25 Thread toby10

This is a perfect (and very sad) example of what long time SlimDevices
customers feared when Logitech purchased SlimDevices.
Logitech is a behemoth corporation that seems to stumble over itself to
make anything squeeze related a confusing mess.

The simple solution to the Canada situation is to allow Canadian
customers to purchase any SqueezeBox items directly from the US if that
item is not available in Canada.
PITA for Logitech? You bet. Hopefully enough of a PITA to force
Logitech Canada to PROPERLY support their customers and stock their own
friggin products!
Especially if it's a promised add-on (battery pack) to the main item
(Radio) that *IS* currently available in Canada.
If the entire Radio itself were not available in Canada then I'd
understand Logitech Canada's position.

This whole thing makes about as much sense as Logitech selling printers
in Canada, but then not making replacement ink cartridges available in
Canada for said printers.

Complete and utter silliness and stupidity.

For PR purposes alone Logitech should fix this ridiculous situation!
They look like a bunch of bumbling morons at a flea market stand than
anything even *remotely* like a technology company.

NOTE:
My above comments are related solely to Logitech marketing logistics,
unrelated to the SqueezeBox development team.

As a Canadian who owns a Radio, not being able to buy the battery is a
pain. Now that Michael says they won't be selling them in Canada I may
build my own but I wanted a Logitech battery in part because I have
purchased a radio for my kids- for peace of mind I would prefer the

I can't even buy a Touch from Logitech Canada, so I am not really

Maybe we're just arguing semantics ... but

As I see it Logitech Canada advertised this neat product:
radio + battery pack. Great. I go to the store to buy it.
Battery not quite ready I'm told. I don't want to go away
empty handed so I buy the radio. Now Logitech Canada
reveals they never did and never will sell the product,
radio + battery, for which I went to their store in the
first place. Why does this not meet your own definition

As was mentioned earlier, bait and switch requires them to advertise a
product to lure you in to sell you another product instead. I agree
this is a dirty trick and false advertising, but I don't think it is
bait and switch. Semantics? Yes. The result is the same. Lots of
unhappy Canadian and U.S. customers.

I feel that the radio+battery is the product they advertised but

The Canadian Logitech website states that the battery pack

That is clearly false advertising.

I think it falls under bait and switch as well which is
to advertise a product as possessing various features that,
after the purchaser is committed, turn out not to exist.

That is pretty much exactly what happened in Canada.

I don't understand the policy with batteries and Canada, but I do
understand bait and switch and that's not it at all. What you describe
is all bait and no switch. Bait and switch is the practice of a seller
luring customers into the store to buy product X (through incredibly
good promotional price or other means), and then once the customer is
in the store telling the customer that product X is sold out, or really
isn't as good as product Y, and tries to get the customer to buy product
Y (hence the switch). The idea is that product Y is more expensive
and/or higher margin, and once the customer has made it to the store
they don't want to leave empty handed.

OK - admittedly not bait and switch.

But how's this for the definition of false advertising: The act of
knowingly advertising a product or service that does not exist or does
not function as represented.

I am still confused though, you even stated that Logitech offered to
refund the device AFTER the 30-day return period yet you choose not to.
Instead you want to throw legal slander their way?

Again you knew when you bought the device that no such battery existed,
yet that is a key feature for you but you bought it anyway. Now I agree
Logitech should provide something they advertised. BUT they never sold
you a product that did not have everything that it advertised for the
price you bought.

NEVER buy something that does not meet your requirements at the time of
purchase. If you are not happy with it either do not buy it or if it
turns out it is not what you want return it. Not sure why this is such
a difficult concept. If the battery was such a key feature you should
not buy it until you can get that key feature, not like they wont have
any when they get the batteries.

Again I think Logitech should provide the batteries but they are by no
means required under any Law to do so.

I was originally responding to your response to newy. You took
umbrage to his use of the term bait and switch. I was merely trying
to point out that while he may have been using the wrong legal terms,
he was still justified in feeling that he had been taken advantage of.

I still like the radio, and always have, but would have hoped the
battery would have been available much more quickly. As for taking
Logitech up on their offer of a return: I was willing to wait for just
a few more weeks and hopefully get a battery rather than return it.

As for slander, that doesn't apply--I have not accused Logitech of
anything that is not true.

Again you knew when you bought the device that no such battery existed,
yet that is a key feature for you but you bought it anyway. Now I
agree Logitech should provide something they advertised. BUT they
never sold you a product that did not have everything that it

When I bought the radio, I believed the battery existed. I had no
information to the contrary, and was assured by Logitech sales support
staff that the batteries would be available on May 19th. I ordered it
immediately, and had no way of knowing how long that process would
take. It IS a key feature for me. And yes, they sold me the product
based upon the portability feature.

That's ridiculous - like buying an engine and then hoping the car that
it fits is still available. I found the radio I wanted, ordered the
part that was supposedly available to make it perfect, and here we are.
Months later.

This back-and-forth is obviously not going to do anything to help
anyone. I for one, would like to end it now. I understand you will
want the last word. Ball's in your court.

I ordered my battery today (7/21). The website and the various stages of
the order process were inconsistent. At one point it said backordered,
at another point it said in stock. Very inconsistent. When I completed
the order process, I called a live person. She told me the batteries
are in stock and are being sent in the order in which the orders were
placed. Certainly makes sense. I'll let you know if they had enough of
them in stock to send me one also. (By the way, I am in the U.S.)

I think you missed the point of my comment.

I work with several clients who import various products and components
internationally and there is usually no problem with knowing when and
how items are going to be shipped and when they will arrive. Unexpected
delays are more the exception than the rule.

If the batteries were just back in stock, then somebody at Logitech
knew that quite some time earlier and they either forgot or purposely
chose not to tell the customer service people.

While I think my multiple Squeezeboxes are great, I will stand by my
comments that Logitech is one bizarre company when it comes to public
relations. They do seem to go to great lengths to irritate customers
concerning anticipated product availability and order status.

He'd phoned Logitech about two weeks ago to inquire about the order

 takes a while.

The difference between Logitechs stance on batteries and power supplies
is because of the problems there has been with battery packs over the

SlimDevices products before they were Logitech, so the official line

I think Sean Adams could have designed and tested the battery in about

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2010-05-26 Thread edllew

Thanks to all who posted here to guide me through building the battery
pack.

I ordered the $5.99 connector/thermistor and a 2300 mAh pack from
all-battery.com ($15.99), as suggested, and wired it up. I soldered
rather than crimped, since I have better luck with that, and I think it
was no more difficult, maybe easier. I decided not to include the
intermediate taps into the battery. I slit the plastic wrap around the
battery pack and slid the thermistor down inside so it sits sandwiched
in the middle, but probably doesn't have tight thermal contact with any
of the cells. I packed some foam around the battery pack so it wouldn't
rattle around in the hard plastic compartment when plugged in. I
worried at first that this might not allow it to stay cool, but then
again, maybe this is fine - the thermistor should stop the charge
sooner, if anything.

I have lots of experience doing this kind of thing, but it shouldn't be
that hard for a determined builder. The hardest thing is working with
the small parts and wires.

I have now used it for about 3 weeks and have discharged the pack a
couple times. I measured 9 to 10 hours of radio operation at mid
volume the first time, and it seemed about the same for subsequent
uses. So far so good. I really like being able to move it around,
bring it with me to the backyard campfire and take music requests from
friends for Pandora, etc.

Glad to hear of your success; I might give it a try since I live
in Canada, where logitech refuses to offer the battery pack (and,
for some reason, only made a dozen or so for the rest of the
world :) )

I need to re-wire mine - right now my taps aren't connected at all and
it seems to work fine (charges, discharges, no funny behaviors). Perhaps
the taps are purely for monitoring and manually evaluating if there are
a pack is bad. I'm going to go with the 3/6 when I rewire.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2010-03-04 Thread peterw

BTW, all the battery links I've looked at in this thread have been for
basic NiMH cells, but word from a Logitech engineer is that the official
battery pack uses Low Self-Discharge NiMH cells. From what I understand
about NiMH (also having used them casually for years), you want LSD
cells if you're going to leave your Radio unplugged, or even plugged in
but fully off (in which case the batteries aren't being charged) for
weeks or months at a time, so the combination of self-discharge and the
very slight power drain of the microcontroller won't drain your
batteries so low that they can't be revived. Even with LSD cells, you'll
want to avoid leaving your Radio off for many months at a time, but
using LSD cells would buy you an extra margin of safety.

I've filed an enhancement request to make Radio a bit more intelligent
about keeping batteries from going flat if it's left off but plugged
in, but I don't know if/when that enhancement might be added. Since
Logitech is using LSD cells, Radio probably doesn't need to be turned on
as often as they've suggested, so there probably aren't as many
customers at risk of dead batteries as I first feared.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

2010-02-28 Thread jdoering

The voltages have been discussed either in this thread or on the link
with the original instructions. I think they were nominally 1.2*3 and
1.2*7 (depends on charge level of course) the way the instructions say
to do them.

What we need is the voltage levels from someone with the official
Logitech battery pack as soon as people get it in their hands.

And mine is working fine without those wires connected at all. (I had a
minor problem but don't plan on fixing it until I see posts from the
official pack to make sure the 3/7 position is correct.)

...To the folks who provided the following links:

http://cms.diodenring.de/de/electronic/microcontroller/92-squeezebox

and

http://www.all-battery.com/12v2000mahnimhbatterypack11606.aspx

I was able to build two battery packs for my two SBR's for less than
the price of one from Logitech. They work terrific! Now I can put the
money that I would have spent on two accessory packs from Logitech
towards a new SB Touch.

PS: Beware if you want to try and build this yourself -- besides
needing to have some basic electronics assembly ability, the parts for
building the battery plug are *very* tiny -- which may make you
appreciate buying a factory made one from Logitech.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SqueezeBox Radio battery kit avalible

The following directory is interesting for watching the battery
behavior:

/sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-1/1-0010

Code:

  . alarm_time input:input2
  .. ambient ir
  adc_0 battery_capacitykill
  adc_1 battery_charge modalias
  adc_10 battery_charge_rate msp_buffer
  adc_11 battery_disable name
  adc_12 battery_discharge_rate power_mode
  adc_13 battery_temperature rtc:rtc0
  adc_14 battery_vmon1_voltage subsystem
  adc_15 battery_vmon2_voltage sys_voltage
  adc_2 battery_voltage test_1
  adc_3 bus test_2
  adc_4 charger_event test_4
  adc_5 charger_state test_8
  adc_6 driver time
  adc_7 flash uevent
  adc_8 fw wall_voltage
  adc_9 gp_register

You can find out how some of the readings are interpreted by looking
in:

/usr/share/jive/applets/Diagnostics/DiagnosticsApplet.lua
/usr/share/jive/applets/SqueezeboxBaby/SqueezeboxBabyApplet.lua

But some values like battery_charge_rate (10) aren't used in the lua
files and don't have meanings that are obvious to me. It appears to be
using at TI MSP430 microcontroller. Here is some info on charging
options with the MSP430:

http://focus.ti.com/lit/ml/slap106/slap106.pdf
http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/sluu369/sluu369.pdf
http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/slaa287/slaa287.pdf (has some MSP430 C
code)

I'm probably going to set up a remote syslogd so I can dump battery
stats regularly (every 10 seconds say) and graph them to understand the
charging characteristics.

To all those folks building their own battery packs, you had better make
sure that you get the temperature sensor correct. It is -the- critical
component used to control charging. Get it wrong and you are likely to
get either something that is non-functional (will not charge, or
overcharges and boils the batteries), or something that catches fire.

This is all I intend to say on the matter. Just take it as a friendly
warning.
