I on the other hand, like the GKs a whole bunch. I haven't tried the sneaker pedal, but I have the MKS Sylvan and some Truvativ something or other platform. [RBW] Planning a short credit card tour – looking for route advice
In a couple of weeks my dad is flying out from New Hampshire and we're planning on a short 4-5 day tour of the bay area. He and I both ride a lot and plan on carrying minimal gear so 70-100 miles a day should be doable. I spent part of today stitching together a route – it's 'inspired' by the SFR 600k as well as the Dharmawheels pilgrimage ride. Looks like a great route and should have plenty of places to stay, but much of it will definitely new territory to me. Hence, I'd love any feedback or advice you'd like to give. In exchange, I promise a full ride report when we return! Re: [RBW] Planning a short credit card tour – loo king for route advice
Will, When you are between Cloverdale and Healdsburg, instead of riding on Dry Creek Rd, I recommend taking West Dry Creek between Westside Drive on the South and Yoakim Bridge Rd on the north. It is beautiful. I've ridden on it three times. Paved country riding at its best. -Jim W. [RBW] Re: Cycling in Northern Winters
Conditions can change so much from hour to hour in the winter. Sometimes the snow is hard and iced over in the morning, then by afternoon it has softened and the going is really slow. I ride my bike to work in the winter. Last winter it was a combination of a mountain bike with spiked tires on some days, and my Quickbeam on others. I don’t find plain ice to be too much of a challenge, if it is flat. The bike tends to keep going in a straight line if you let it. I can ride on flat ice on my Marathon Supremes. The difficult stuff is snow that has been walked on, and then frozen over. It is very rough and hard as concrete, the front end bounces around, you have to wrestle the bike and be ready to hop off at any time. Also, heavy soft snow that has been churned up by cars is not much fun. At first you think you can’t go ten feet, then you go ten feet, then you start to get a feel for it and eventually you finish the trip. It demands so much concentration, you have to steer constantly just to keep the front end going in the right direction. I think these conditions make you a better cyclist, you learn to steer by applying some torque to the rear wheel at just the right time. The experienced mountain bikers would probably feel right at home. But I do agree with the comments about drivers in winter, you have to be ultra-defensive, allowing for the fact that cars now can skid through a turn, and you have to constantly anticipate their potential path and position yourself out of that zone. I have learned a strategy of avoidance in all seasons, I ride on streets that have hardly any traffic, I avoid confrontations with cars, and try to avoid doing anything that challenges them or causes them inconvenience. I even avoid talking about how bad car drivers are, because most of them are hopeless. I think the biggest change in winter is the concentration that must be on the whole time. It is not relaxing, but at the same time it allows no other thoughts to intrude. When you do get the occasional calm moment, like riding home in the evening when it is dark and quiet, it can be really beautiful. I am putting 40 mm Marathon Winter spiked tires on my Quickbeam this winter, and fenders, which will let me ride on almost all days if I want to. I will use the big chainring for mild days, of which there are a lot here, and the small one for days with heavier snow. I will post pictures once the bad weather is here. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Bike Life
I usually ride Saturday mornings with some cycling friends. They're great guys and I always have fun riding with them, but these are guys who not only won't ride when it's raining, they won't ride-- I am not making this up-- when the roads are wet. Which not exactly my attitude. I'm more of a bike anywhere for any reason kind of person. Yesterday morning was sunny and warm, but I didn't feel like getting up so the ride went without me. So there I was at 3:00 this afternoon, heading out on my Atlantis. Without the boys on their dainty carbon bikes with fragile 23mm tires, I was free to enjoy some dirt, so I turned off the standard paved loop to the fire road up Windy Hill. I was determined to get all the way up to the top cleanly, trying to use all the dirt suggestions you guys have been giving this week. All was going well until I got to the very steepest pitch and for some reason they'd put a load of loose gravel on the bottom section. Too slippy for me, though I tried twice. But next week I'll try again. I think maybe if I just try to spin faster up the bottom part of the steep section I can get past the gravel, then hope to have enough energy to continue as it gets even steeper for a few tens of yards. On the top of the ridge it was getting late and and the wind was blowing. OK well, I guess that's why it's called Windy Hill. Happily I had taken the elementary precaution of bringing along an Ibex wooly zip-tee. All of you should buy one or more of those woolies-- they are absolutely fantastic for an extra layer when it starts getting cold, and they wad up so small. Not that carrying capacity is an issue on this particular bike, as we will shortly see. More climbing on pavement, and then it was time for the long descent. With the low clouds and the late hour, I was glad that the Atlantis has a generator hub wired to head and taillights. No need to worry about approaching darkness or dead batteries, I just flipped the light switch and I was good to go zooming down the hill. At the bottom it was time to go home to cook dinner, but I had to buy it first. Re: [RBW] Bike Life
Anne, Sounds like you had a great ride! Your friends sure have curious ideas about what makes acceptable riding conditions ;-) Out of curiosity (and because I want to get one someday) which size Saddlesack did you get? Based on your grocery list I'm assuming it's either a medium or a large. I'm about to ride my Rambouillet to the store, but I'll be putting much less stuff in my Acorn large(haha!) saddlebag. It's super nice but *not* what I'd call large! Stuart Fletcher Seattle, WA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Bike Life
Pretty amazing Anne. Seems like if someone likes riding a bike, they'd like riding it rain or shine... Today is drizzly/misty in SoCal, so I put on my skinny (36mm!!!) tires and mudguards http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/5090485054/. I wasn't expecting to see anyone, but was happily surprised to cross paths with four other riders. That was over an hour, so comparable to my four hour/40 cyclists ride from yesterday (yes, I count cyclists). Who says SoCal cyclers don't go out if the temp dips below 65F!!! Re: [RBW] Planning a short credit card tour – look ing for route advice
James is right; West Dry Creek is splendid. And on the return in the same area, think twice about whether the frontage road for Highway 101 is where you want to be. After you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, you have yourself going up through San Rafael and over to Point Reyes on Sir Frances Drake. That's not terrible, if you like riding through suburbs, but riding Ridgecrest is spectacular. You could head up from Fairfax on Bolinas Road. Comptche Ukiah Road is pretty, but then you have that section from Ukiah to Healdsburg. Instead you could consider doing the obvious- riding from Mendocino to Jenner on the coast. It shouldn't be that busy at this time of year. [RBW] Re: VO Campagne handlebar review?
Thanks to all for your input. I ordered the VO and it arrived yesterday (BOY THAT WAS FAST!!)... I really like the quality of this bag... I only had a few minutes to try it out on the rack... I'll have to give it a proper road test with my drop bars on a longer ride. I'm sure it will serve my needs, although I will probably have to make a few minor mods/tweaks... Thx! Peace, BB On Oct 15, 9:34 pm, Way Rebb grayc...@mac.com wrote: I had the Campagne bag mounted to the front rack and thought it worked great. I mounted it two different ways. The first was just slide the leather thing over the steel thing and use a toe strap to hold it to the rack. I was able to stuffed lots of things inside. I think it is mounted that way in this picture: Inside is a spare tube, camera, apples, nuts, glasses, maps, warm clothing etc. It bulges out very nicely. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wrebb/4375751359/in/set-72157623480171652/ Since the bag got a little droopy when not full I made a wooden platform, drilled a hole in the bag, bolted it on, and zip tied the whole contraption to the rack: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wrebb/4917605573/in/datetaken/ That stiffened the bottom up. I missed the bulge factor but it made it easier to just throw stuff into. There was also a great spot to carry my little pump: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wrebb/4918208604/in/datetaken/ Eventually I needed the rack back to haul around a tent so I used the Sackville bag rivendell sells but right now I have the Acorn classic (as I call it) on the bike and have rack space. What I didn't like about mounting the bag to the rack was rider side pockets were unusable due to the shifter cables and there wasn't a lot of room to fiddle with the elastic cord to close it. Overall there isn't much I don't like about the bag except: The buckles are in two parts which is a little weird. (I think the GB bags have them also) and the elastic cord holding it shut. The magnet on the Riv bag is so much better, I may try to rig up a magnet to hold the Campagne bag shut when it goes back on the Hillborne. [RBW] Re: bag for mustache bars?
I like the Hobo bag as sold by Rivendell and also the similar version by the Acorn folks. I use one now with my drop bars and its just the right size for most rides. Although a front rack with a nylon, drawstring stuff sack and a Irish strap or two is the lightest way to carry extra stuff. I'm going that route soon as I carry my heavy tools and tube etc. in a home made burrito wrap so its on the bike at all times. Most of the time I just need a place for a rain jacket, spare shirt and socks so it seems pointless to have a carry method that is heavier than the items being carried. A stuff sack can always expand or contract and can easily be removed off the bike too. I have three bags now that might be on the market. Have done beater bikes in the past. This year am planning on riding my Surly LHT with 26 wheels in the winter. Probably also my Salsa Fargo. Both will have studded tires. The Sam Hillborne will be inside on the trainer. Will also be my first winter using drop bars. Previously have only had flat bars. Hope the change is easy. Admittedly, am not as big at riding during winter. Drivers in my area seem less tolerant in winter than summer. More close calls. And am still too large to ride trails on a non-snowbike. Cleaning and oiling is more hit and miss. Although if the weather is mild, am more likely to do it. [RBW] MUSA Windshield
Was going to mention this a week or so ago. But the windshield is a pretty nifty item. While riding on vacation at the beginning of the month, had a big hill to go down. Repeatedly. So, a couple of times, when I was going to just cruise down the Gunflint Trail, the Windshield came in handy. The descent is about two miles (or so) dropping probably close to 1,200 feet. Not mountains, but not flat. Routine became, get to the top of the hill, pull over, slip item over head, enjoy the ride down feeling comfy and without the excess flapping of a windbreaker. A good thing to keep in the bag. Rate it two greasy thumbs up. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I loved your bike life post. It made me wonder why a carbon bike has to be 'dainty.' I spent a pretty instructive hour with Shawn of Ruckus Components the other day, and it kind of changed the way I think about carbon fiber. If you make _anything_ as light as possible, it's going to fail. The olive drab and Atlantis green (isn't it more teal-y than pea sage?) combo doesn't sound harmonious. Tan tape and hoods would be a step in the right direction, but that's a pretty drastic color- mismatch. I bought a rackaleur from VO to allow me to use bar bags with my cross levers on a drop bar. It works well. Depends on how much stuff you want to carry. I used a bar tube with M- bars. It was a day rider, casual bike so the bar tube held what little I needed for short rides. If you go with the stuff sack on a rack idea, consider a cargo net to hold it down. I love the way they can handle a wide variety of loads, shapes, weights, etc. Really handy. dougP On Oct 17, 4:04 pm, andrew hill neurod...@gmail.com wrote: I'm looking for a front-bag to hang beneath m-bars on a Romulus. During the winter, I commute with some Lowa hiking boots that have a really effective gore-tex liner. My feet stay very comfortable all winter. http://www.flickr.com/photos/39151...@n07/4223163958/in/set-72157622960003171/ Best regards, Alex -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Bike Life
Cool post, Anne. Kinda funny that we dig all purpose bikes, install big tires, fenders, etc - but still care about aesthetics. I'm as guilty as anyone. Unfortunately, the Large isn't available in grid-grey yet. The small (which I have) and medium are. I really like that fabric - a lot. It goes with most bike colors pretty easily. The olive looks great on my black bike. Your best course of action is probably just to let beausage take care of it. Maybe UV exposure will make it blend perfectly with your Atlantis teal. [RBW] Re: FOUND, was WTB: Grip Kings
I am curious if those of you with large feet that like the GK pedals so much have flattish or high arched feet? I have high arches and with the GK it felt like my feet were going to roll off the outside edge and I had to use concentration to keep the load on my inner three rows of foot bones. As stated before pedals are as or more personal than shoes, and I am always on the lookout for wide pedals that will fully support my keens. I have tried a few variations of clipless pedals over the years but gave up when the combinations of ill fit and having to carry two pair of shoes on my commute wore me down. Back to flat pedals for years now. Taking it to the next step have been trying to work out if it is possible to ride in vibriam five fingers... But one thing I know for sure... pedals are a personal and subjective and sometimes ride-style-dependent thing. Grip Kings definitely work well for all the riding I do or expect to do. But YMMV. Re: [RBW] Re: bag for mustache bars?
thanks everyone, yeah, a no-rise, long stem is why i'm concerned about fitting something like the Acorn Handlebar Bag under the m-bars, but that'd be an ideal bag i think, and might work. i think a seat-intended bag might fit, using seat tube loop as head-tube loop, and seat loop loops for bar loops, if i can figure out a way to keep the bag off the brake cable. maybe the rackaleur or a modified bottle cage - cannot quite visualized it. the wheels aren't in yet, so i cannot built it all up and make sure this is the right stem, but i'll post a pic when it's all together, with bag. andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Bike Life
Great Post Anne. I had a ride in late September that my Carbon friends bailed on because of the threat, threat mind you not actual, of rain. I shook my head and went out and had a wonderful ride with hardly a sprinkle. I figured next time I get this response I would ask if it was really true that carbon melts in the rain? [RBW] Re: Bike Life
Great piece, Anne! I am in Borneo now (been here a week, will be here for 103 more weeks) with my AHH. I bought (but didn't try it out until I arrived here) a large Sackville sack for use on my bike. My first trip I hauled, a box of cornflakes, a tin of dutch cookies, a bag of powdered milk (a goat just walked into my house as I was typing this), two Anker beers (Iarge) and a bag of oatmeal. My favorite trip though has been to the beach: two towels, a cold beer, sunscreen bottle, concert-sized Fluke ukulele (neck sticking out the side). Love the Sackville sack and absolutely adore my SS coupled A Homer Hilsen! As to bike life - the town here is MAYBE 4000 people, the loop of road is a little under 5 miles and for the most part is nicely paved, yet people ride motorcycles and drive cars to do errands. To be fair, there are a good number of cycles on the road, but it depresses me to see so many people riding motorcycles that they have financed at 18% to go to the beach and run other short-distance errands. Arrrgh. A little OT, I suppose. But I enjoyed your post. Roberto On 18 Okt, 01:30, Anne Paulson anne.paul...@gmail.com wrote: Don't know how this got sent before I finished it. Here's the complete version: *** I usually ride Saturday mornings with some cycling friends. They're great guys and I alwa sys have fun riding with them, but these are guys who not only won't ride when it's raining, they won't ride-- I am not making this up-- when the roads are wet. Feeling a bit peckish, I pulled out the bag of Quadratini cookies and munched a few. Would my new Saddlesack, the arrival of which consoled me for having to missing the RBW garage sale, be able to swallow up two gallons of milk, five pounds of potatoes, pound and a half of chicken, two onions, some garlic, a loaf of French bread and some other assorted groceries? This was my first time using it for such a big load. I was delighted to discover that the straps can reposition for big loads. Everything fitted easily, with the French bread stuck sideways on the outside under the straps. I put my lock in an outside pocket, snapped the little wallet holder pocket back on top, and rode home. My non-Riv friends just don't understand the biking life. -- -- Anne Paulson My hovercraft is full of eels -- -- Anne Paulson My hovercraft is full of eels -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
