[RBW] Re: Frame Pumps for a 64 Hillborne

2012-05-09 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Any thoughts on whether the HPX-4 would work equally well on a 60cm Sam
Hillborne? Effective top tube is 3cm shorter than the 64's, which I think means
the actual top tube is slightly more than 3cm shorter.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Tandem Transport?

2012-05-09 Thread GeorgeS
I have a nice tandem I want to take to Vt this summer. I have a
medium size SUV (Honda Pilot) but with all my other stuff, there's not
enough room in the car for the bike. I don't want to put it on the
rear rack because that's got all the regular bikes which leaves the
roof. Does anyone have a recommendation for a roof rack for a tandem?

Kinda off-topic (sadly riv doesn't make a tandem :()

but thule and yakima make a tandem-specific roof rack component.

we have one - it is giant - and somewhat expensive but it works well.

[RBW] Re: What is the deal with the double top tubes?

2012-05-09 Thread newenglandbike
The double top-tube thing has been available on Rivendells for a long time
I think, going way back to larger-sized customs, but first appearing on
standard models with the AHH in larger sizes (67cm and up) if I'm not
mistaken. Then around 2009 the Bombadil came standard with it, to
're-triangulate' the frame due to the expanded geometry and tall head
tube.

Re: [RBW] wtt: 58cm Rivendell Rambouillet ~ orange for blue

Hi Eric,

I have a 58 blue Rambouillet and am definitely interested. I am second owner
and bought it from a list member last year but have hardly ridden it. He bought
it new from Harris Cyclery. It has one flaw, a small double ding in the top
tube, and came that way to the original owner. Neither he nor I found it
noticeable. I will be home Friday and can send pics then if you are interested.

Well I guess it has been awhile since I have been there. I have been
enjoying riding my Rambouillet too much to feel the need to shop.
Probably should have spent less time riding and more time surfing.

Now I kind of want an Atlantis, or maybe a Hilborn or I don't know. A
light tourer I guess for commuting and dreaming about longer rides.
That way I can strip the rack off the Rambouillet and keep her slim.

- Hilsens have optional double top tubes
- Atlantises don't have them at all
- Hillbornes in the larger sizes have them

If you don't like them you can get frames without them

If you do like them you're all set, too.

Well I know there is no double TT on the Atlantis because it only goes so
big, after that you are in Bomba/Hunqa country. The Sam's get double TT at
what I would describe as a medium size, the 56 but the Hilsen doesnst go
double TT until the huge sizes so depending on your size you might be stuck
looking at the higher end stuff or hell go Yves Gomez and no TT!

Z-Man: the line about logic/futility gave me a good chuckle. As a bicycle
professional, who frequently tries new bikes, new component setups, new
accessories, etc, I often have people ask me "why did you do it THAT way?" as
if they expect a sophisticated response that will be logically infallible and
revolutionary to all cycling wisdom hereafter. "I just kinda like it", or "I
like to try new things", are disappointing responses to those who prefer rigid
categories of everything.

I used an Atoc tandem roof rack with
the side brace to cart my Surly Big Dummy on the roof of my car. It worked

stabilize the bike... especially if you plan to drive on dirt roads.

At the risk of taking this off-topic, I find it incredibly hard not to

too small. Just yesterday my neighbor, that had been talking about getting
a new Kona all winter long pulled up on what looked to be 56 "Honky Tonk".
He is about 6', maybe even 6'1". WTH? He's got 2 or 3 inches on me, and I'm

Believe me, I'll never be a downer over anyone's new bike, but aye, they

[RBW] 'Nother question; chain suck

2012-05-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've been scoring up the outside front end of my right chainstay on
the Fargo when shifts from the 36 to the 46 end with the big ring
dragging the bottom run of chain up between the stay and the inside of
the ring. The chain is only about 50% worn per my Park chain checker
and it is reasonably clean and lubed -- "reasonably" meaning that I
don't clean it after every ride in the dirt (dust and sand) but do so
after every few such rides. One of the cheaper SRAM chains, original
46/36/24 rings on the Sugino XD2; bastard home-made cassette if it
matters, which it probably does not. 8-sp XT rd, LX fd. 7 cogs
positioned in the 1-7 spots with two spacers at the back end.

I know I can install a bolt-on device to prevent this, but I want to
find the problem and fix it, not install a work around. I've ridden
doubles and triples on the same dirt for years without this happening.

So, what gives? Is it a chain issue? Time to buy some of those higher
quality KMCs? (Again, the current chain on the Fargo is a low level
SRAM.)

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: What is the deal with the double top tubes?

2012-05-09 Thread Smitty
My last comment was kind of snarky, so in an effort to redeem myself...
here's an actual sincere response...

I went with 2TT on a whim. I was placing my order on the phone and Grant
said something like "You can get 2tt on a 65 if you want." And I said
something like "uuu... sure but only if I get a 2nd head badge
too." He said sure and I think I heard him smile over the phone.

2 things I've found about the under tube that I really like... it provides
a place to rest the palm of my hand when I shift (DT shifters). And it
gives a solid place to lift/shoulder the bike even with a pump under the
upper top tube.

This is sort of anecdotal and its just an "n" of 1 so it might just be
wishful thinking on my part... I've heard hilsen owners talk about their
bikes being flexy when carrying a load. I've had weekend size loads on my
2tt and it was solid. Mine got noticeably squirely when I had 60 pounds on
the rear rack and 20 or so on the front but that was more me loading it up
just to see what happened. Unloaded, I notice no stiffness difference
between my 2tt and a friend's 1tt of the same size. But I buy into the idea
that it adds stiffness when the bike is loaded.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ordered a Hunq today....

2012-05-09 Thread Brian Hanson
I ride a 59 AHH and am about 5'11". I've had a number of close bike-crazy
friends who think I'm nuts and on a frame that is too big. Everyone has an
opinion. I find it comfy, and would guess that I could easily go with a
61cm on a relatively flat top tube bike. Getting the handlebars high
without having to use a really long stem height is more important to me
that worrying about how close the top tube is to my "junk". I'm of the
opinion that wanting to keep a low top tube is something the industry
legals did to minimize the new biker injury claims rather than educating
folks on how to ride a properly sized bike without hurting yourself. The
problem is that your injury on a "too small" bike just takes longer to
manifest, but will definitely happen, whereas a bump on the junk only takes
one time to get folks in the mindset on how to avoid it in the future.

[RBW] Re: Ordered a Hunq today....

2012-05-09 Thread Zack
Riding a frame that fits (and figuring out what that actually means) is a
total revelation.

I am 6'3" with a 94 PBH. When I first got into riding, it was on a 56cm
Trek 520 that someone gave me. Needless to say, my 64cm Sam is much easier
on my neck, back, shoulders, and even my legs/knees.

Congrats on the Hunq.

I rode both the 62 Hunq and the 64 Sam myself, and loved both. I went with
the Sam as I figured I would mostly be riding around town and haven't done
much off-road exploring on the bike in VT. Both felt better than any bike
I had ever ridden.

[RBW] couple o thoughts on riv sizing sadness

2012-05-09 Thread Addison Wilhite
Let me be clear that I love my 53cm Riv AR so perhaps it is moot since I
don't know when I'll be getting another Riv...

But when I read this description on the website:

Five sizes: 48 and 52 fit 650B wheels; 56, 60 and 64 fit 700C. The frame
design is "expanded," which is not at all like "compact." The top tube
slopes up 6 degrees, and so the head tube grows in height to intercept it.
As a result, it is easy, really easy, to get your handlebar high up where
it's comfortable.

If you're five-ten, you'll probably be on a 56. Most 6-footers ride the 60.
Most five-eighters, the 52. The 48 fits most five-twoers, and most 6-4ers
ride the 64.

**

It feels like I've been "forgotten" a bit in the grand sizing scheme of
things. Anybody else in the same boat as I am? At least in terms of the
"production" models.

45 and still a "tween" apparently. :(

With the racing and want-to-look-racy world of bike fitment, it seems like they
had a weird line of thinking that went a little like this: better get the stem
way down, that's racy. Bike doesn't fit now that the stem is like that? Better
get a smaller frame to bring the bars closer, don't even think about raising
that stem, mister. Sort of a cart following the horse moment. Really weird.

Well that is on the Sam, the "budget" bike for tweeners like you and I at a
short legged 5 10 you have to go whole hog and get the AHH or go "Big Riv"
and get the 52 and a short riser stem like the periscopa or dirt drop.

[RBW] Saddlebags for carrying a laptop?

2012-05-09 Thread TSW
Sorry if this is a repeat. I'm looking for a way to carry a 13" laptop
(Macbook Pro 13" to be exact) in something like a Sackville Medium
saddlebag. I'd like to protect it as well as possible, and am considering
a hardshell case, such as a Pelican case (1085CC or equivalent). Anyone
have any experience in securely shlepping a laptop in a saddlebag?
According to the dimensions, the Sackville Medium is nominally narrower
than the outside dimensions of the Pelican 1085. But I figure there's some
give, no?

And, my commute will be multi-modal: I'll want to be able to pull it out
easily for the motorized leg of my trip.

I'd like to hear any other solutions and experience.

TIA,
TSW

[RBW] Surly Karate Monkey for sale...though I would mention this on here.

I am selling my Karate Monkey which I guess is lo-fi for a mountain bike.
Not sure if it peaks any interest here, but surly seems to get some love.

It's set up geared 1x9, but will *also* ship with a SS wheelset. I'll pick
up shipping for list members in the states. Alaska, Hawaii??? probably some
additional.

Any questions, hit me up.

[RBW] Re: Saddlebags for carrying a laptop?

2012-05-09 Thread Tom Harrop
I do it lots. I carry a 15″ MBP in a Large SaddleSack in one of these
Crumpler
sleeves
.

My girlfriend carries her 15″ MBP in a Medium SaddleSack in one of these Ron
D. Swan
sleeves.

The sleeve only just fits flat in the bottom of the SaddleSack.

In case it's not clear the laptop sits in the sleeve on the bottom of the
SaddleSack, then you pile your other stuff on top. I've been doing it twice
a day for well over a year now with no problems. I far prefer having it sit
flat on the rack in a saddle bag to my previous arrangement, which was to
carry it in an Ortlieb pannier where it was able to bounce around
vertically and laterally (if you see what I mean).

I take the SaddleSack off when I park my bike and carry it into my office.
It takes about 10 seconds to get it off and maybe 30 to put back on again.
Ortliebs may be quicker but lose out big time on shape and size to the
SaddleSacks, in my humble IMHO.

I carry a laptop in my large saddlesack (17" Macbook Pro).

I have it in an incase sleeve, and generally put a jacket or something else

may be a tight fit in the medium, but the 13 would fit in the large (as
pretty much anything can fit in the large, lol).

"Probably should have spent less time riding and more time surfing."
No, you've got your priorities straight. We've discussed the 2TT
subject ad nauseum here, & I doubt anyone changed their mind as a
result.

"Now I kind of want an Atlantis,..." The Atlantis is "...unchanged
since 1999.75...". There have been reports of additional rack
mounting eyelets on later versions but that's about it.

Get an Atlantis; you will not regret it. Grant hit the bullseye & is
unlikely to change his aim.

I have an older version of this REI briefcase:

[RBW] Re: Ordered a Hunq today....

2012-05-09 Thread Jim
When I started looking for a new bicycle last year (for the first time in a
lonnng time), I got put on some spectacularly small frames (i'm 6-8"),
including a Specialized Crosstrail, and some Giant bike that was around
60cm. And they would have happily sold me those bikes. I think it was the
third LBS i entered where someone finally told me "dude, we got nothing,
you need a custom". Fortunately I found Riv and the AHH.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Badge Poster - Now in High Res

2012-05-09 Thread Marty
Thanks! Honestly, I hope there is always another nameless bike in
development, and that the poster will never be complete. I will, however,
update it when the newest bike (badge and all) is complete. FYI - for those
interested, shipping costs have outpaced my estimates, (I'm using USPS
Priority) as have production costs, so I need to bump the price up to $30
to cover all that. Can't pull the trigger on a large enough batch to get
better pricing. I do offer multiple discounts though, and may be in the
mood for a trade+$ or two, (still looking for a good five speed freewheel,
a large Sackville trunksack in black, a Paul silver Gino mount, or ?) just
send me a note off list.

[RBW] Help me choose my next Riv!

2012-05-09 Thread Tim
Ok, please help me out. I had to send my fork to Waterford to have the
stuck stem removed and the gravity of not having a second Riv has sunk
in. I'm stuck riding a way too small Cannondale or an old
Specialized Rockhopper which is, although a decent bike, also too
small (and not a Riv.) So, now it's time to choose. Right now I have a
63cm AHH with noodle bars and longboard fenders. At least 90% or more
of my riding is on the road. I did a supported Southern Tier tour last
summer and would like to do at least one, unsupported (though lightly
loaded) tour this year and more in the future. I like the occasional
fast club ride. In fact, I really, really like them, but I'm not as
fast as I used to be (51 with 2 artificial knees.) I bought the old
MTB for single track last year and found it to be a blast.

So my dilemma: Which should be my next Riv? Hunqa or Rodeo? I will
eventually have both but I'll order one of them probably very soon. By
the time I get Homer's fork back I'll have been without it for 3 weeks
and that, my friends, is unacceptable. I love the fast riding and I
actually was planning on the Rodeo when I got the AHH but changed my
mind after talking with Keven and Grant. Do you guys think the Rodeo
is too close to the Homer and too limited? I guess if I got it I would
probably go with racks and more of a touring setup for Homer. Or if I
got the Hunqa, maybe I could strip down Homer and use it for the
clubbish rides. But where does that leave the occasional single track
foray? What say ye all?

Thanks in advance.

I'd get a Roadeo for fast club rides, deck out the AHH for touring,
and use the Rockhopper for singletrack.

Re: [RBW] Re: Help me choose my next Riv!

2012-05-09 Thread cyclotourist
My $.02: Keep the AHH as is, get a properly sized Cannondale CAAD10 for
the fast club rides (when in Rome...) and then get the Hunq which could be
for most of your dirt rides and loaded touring. You can ride the AHH in
everything in between included mixed-surface rides and supported touring,
even some light self-contained. Depending on how fast you ride in the dirt,
keep the RH or sell depending on what you find yourself riding (slow dirt =
less need for suspension).

[RBW] Help me choose my next Riv!

2012-05-09 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Presumably you're not interested in doing what I did: I love my 60cm Hillborne
so much I got a second one (different color). Now I'll likely never be without
my dream bike. But if you feel your AHH isn't perfect for any potential
touring, well...

My vote: Get the Hunqapillar if the 62 fits. Get a 60 Hillborne if it doesn't.
If you stay on road virtually all the time, either will sub for the AHH should
it be on hiatus in future. And either will tour lightly (or not-so-lightly, for
that matter) loaded. The Roadeo is limited as a sub for the AHH. Spend any
savings on Nitto and Sackville finery. And/or really good lights.

After you have for redundancy needs taken care of (and also have probably
expanded your capabilities a bit) *then* get the Roadeo. Then a Brompton.
Then a Betty. ... :)

Enjoy!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Re: Help me choose my next Riv!

2012-05-09 Thread Mike
I've had my 63cm Hilsen for almost 4yrs and feel it makes an excellent
all round road bike. I've used it for road riding, brevets, s24o's,
and even a 9 day tour. Having different tires can really impact the
way it feels. I felt it performed the most poorly as a touring bike.
With summer coming, and plans for possible touring, it sounds like the
Hunqa is the bike for you. As others pointed out, if you're gonna tour
on the road consider the SH. Or why not just see if RBW will make you
a 64cm Atlantis? I'd pass on the Roadeo for the time being.

[RBW] New Bike = 64 Rambouillet Frame F/S

Greetings,
My Rambouillet has been replaced so I'm seeking a new home for
it. It's been a great bike but the garage is small and it hasn't been
getting many miles recently. It's a 64, green, no dents, some paint
rub and a few scratches. Comes with a logoless Shimano headset
(Ultegra I believe). I've had the bike for about 3.5 years, 2nd
owner have had some great rides on it. It's been ridden but
certainly not crazy mileage...(the beauty of a garageful is that the
miles get spread around). I can pack and will ship FedEx from
Seattle. Pics below...more available...questions let me know. $775
plus shipping.

[RBW] tektro cr720 installation advice

2012-05-09 Thread Brian Hanson
I'm finding that the CR720 canti brass bushing fits too snugly on the canti
posts on my new hunqa. I can hardly force the brake on the post. I tried
a Deore V-brake and it goes on no problem. I'm guessing the posts have
clear-coat as they look coated shiny. What is the best way to remove
this? Should I just sand it or is there a good solvent that works for this
sort of thing? I am not seeing this issue on my brief interweb search, so
I'm guessing most folks just sand the posts, or I have a strange defective
brake set?

[RBW] Just Ride

2012-05-09 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Maybe there should be a spoiler alert here - be advised that I will be
discussing various aspects of the new book, so navigate away from this page
if you prefer the content of the book to be a complete surprise.

I finished reading the book tonight, which if I can summarize in a line, is
about all the good things about bikes that appear only when you toss racer
prejudices and attitudes out the window and Just Ride. After the first few
chapters, I thought that maybe the editors really sanitized GP's
historically familiar against-the-grain opinions to be more blandly
vanilla, hopefully to be appealing to a broader audience. The general
content wasn't unpredictable to me, having read the Readers and Catalogs
and most everything else Riv going back to 2004 when I wanted a touring
bike and couldn't find any to buy except the Atlantis (that's how I first
found Riv in the internet universe). But I was somewhat surprised that
there was little to no discernible lug evangelism or quill stem absolutism
or singing the praises of friction shifters, and the Retro-Grouchiness was
held to a dull roar.

But as I got further along in the book, I started to think that maybe Mr
Petersen has simply mellowed about the trivial details over the years (I
know I have!). Or maybe more accurately, there's less to be peeved about in
the bike industry now than there was 10 years ago or even 5 years ago.
After all, smart, sturdy bikes with ample tire clearance and useful
braze-ons and some attention to classic, non-billboard aesthetics have
become, dare I say, normal. If racing bikes and gear are the status quo in
the world, then I must live in a lucky bubble in South Minneapolis where I
ride and fix bikes every day, as I see lots of reincarnated 1980s
sport-tourers, old steel MTBs, and new(ish) Surly Cross-checks and LHTs on
a daily basis, but feel like I see relatively few "road bikes" being ridden
by obvious faux-racers. To the extent that bike trends have steered toward
the benefit of the "Unracer" over the past decade or so, my opinion is that
Grant and Rivendell played a large part in it. This is not to say that all
smart bike designs and product offerings are shameless Riv-ripoffs, but
that Grant gave voice to a backlash movement and opened a long-neglected
market to a lot of smart, creative people who maybe couldn't or wouldn't
have done it without some pioneering coattails to ride on.

[RBW] Re: tektro cr720 installation advice

2012-05-09 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
The Deore v-brakes are so much better in so many ways than ANY canti,
especially the fiddly and minimally effective CR720...maybe just take it as
a sign from God that you are meant to use v-brakes on this bike?

Re: [RBW] Re: Ordered a Hunq today....

2012-05-09 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Obviously, sizing varies from brand to brand, and frame size makes much
less difference with threadless steerers (if the steerer is left long
enough). So it's not out of line that a 6-footer could optimally ride a
56cm non-Riv.

Anyway: Back in 2005 when I rode and was comfy on a 58 Atlantis (I'm 5'8"
with an 85ish pbh), my bike shop coworker, who was very experienced (unlike
me at the time) and known as a fitting guru, expressed SHOCK that a short
guy like me would ride a 58 (which is huge in race bike circles). I figured
there was some brand-to-brand size discrepancy, so I took a $4000 57cm
Lemonde something off the rack, and rode it for 10 minutes on my break. It
actually felt pretty great with no adjusting from stock stem length or
height and with a normal amount of seatpost showing. But my expert coworker
suggested I try a 52 Trek Madone, which he said was more my size. Me riding
that bike was high comedy and it was obvious that some pretty severe
changes would be required if I was to have any hope of riding such a
small-framed bike comfortably. I've thumbed my nose at conventional sizing
recommendations ever since. Now I mostly ride two 56 cm Surly models, a 58
cm Curt Goodrich, and a one-size-fits-most Brompton. If I bought another
Atlantis, Roadeo, AHH, Rambouillet or other traditional Riv, I'd probably
be able to work with anything between 55 and 59 cm. I just set up a 54 cm
San Marcos, and that feels pretty good, too.
