I voted last week via mail in WA state, but I rode today. No rain, either!
All in all, a great day...

compromise between getting the kids seeing the act of voting and not having

Re: [RBW] Re: Friend of Rivendell Maynard Hershon in LA Times

2012-11-06 Thread R Gonet
I read some of MH's stuff in the Riv Reader years ago and couldn't
understand why it was ever published by Grant. It was sour, negative, even
mean. He came off as a cranky, bitchy old man. I remember reading one
Reader with a very inspiring article about an amputee who was getting back
on his bike and I found this to be a very heartwarming, inspirational
story. Then I came to MH's piece and I went looking for eyewash. I wrote
GP to inquire why he even considered printing this dark prose but he never
responded. Since then I have refused to read any of his stuff because it
is so down and depressing.

Re: [RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-06 Thread Peter Morgano
Two things I dont talk about with people I dont intimately know, religion
and politics. If Grant was a republican I would still spend my money, if he
was a republican who gave to anti-abortion and radical right causes, not so
much. I think like all things it is a matter of degrees. I am a liberal,
athiest, democrat but I have many friends who are not and they are still
friends. I lived in South Carolina for 9 years and had many close friends
who would often have a good debate over politics, but after it all we were
still friends. I also worked at a Vegan restaurant where there were many
causes I deemed too liberal but still put myself out there in a respectful
manner to try at talk about things with people. If we cant talk about what
makes us different then we have truely lost "democracy." You cant just
live with your head in the echo-chamber, you will never expand your
horizons that way.

I rode mine this morning. Looks like my vote wasn't neded, but...it's a
funny thing. Four years ago I was in Taiwan or Japan or something on
election day, following the news on the 'puter, and I got happy at the end.
A fellow told me he'd never buy from us again. Earlier this year he emailed
me saying he filled up a shopping cart, but then remembered I was happy
when Obama won, and so he emptied it. I don't believe he ever filled it up,
but it's interesting that he felt that way and took the time to tell me.

Today I voted for women, the environment, the middle class, for stem cell
research, for marriage equality, for fair pay, for EVERY class, for
science. Does that put Rivendell at risk, my saying that?

To anybody who---doesn't like the way the election went and doesn't like
that I do, and might not support us because I'm here all thrilled, I
wonder: Do you find out the political affiliation of every business owner
before you patronize the biz?

Ultimately, it will be good for both parties. I imagine the elephants will

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-06 Thread Joe K
Staten Island really could be (and sometimes is) a really beautiful
place. We were attracted here by how much it resembles the SF Bay
Area, at least here on the North Shore. We are in a neighborhood of
Victorian houses (Stapleton) with expansive views of the Verrazano
bridge and the harbor, and there are lovely hills everywhere. But
there is little consciousness among the locals of how special it is.
Someone once wrote to the local paper that S.I. could be New York's
Sausalito if anyone cared about it. A few of us do!

There are rumblings about the refurbishment of the Verrazano, and
controversy about including a bike path. Transportation Alternatives
has asked cyclists to get involved and demand one. I will do so!
(Hope it isn't too late.)

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-06 Thread Joe K
I'm in NYC too, like Peter, but in Staten Island. Normally I DO ride
to the polling place, just down the street, but due to a confluence of
circumstances I ended up there at the end of a driving/shopping trip
with my son (who. by the way, is a car guy...is that the curse of
parents who are cyclists?

I did ride to a restaurant for lunch yesterday, as we had no food in
the house post-Sandy. Rode the Univega beater, as Im comfortable
locking it up just about anywhere. Now that some concert work is
over, will have time to attend to the bikes...the Uni needs new bar/
stem combo, for example.

Joe

Didn't know it was against the law to take a pic outside a voting
center.

Re: [RBW] Tokyo Cycle Show ( Picture Set )

2012-11-06 Thread Tokyo Crank
Patrick

The ( Carradice Nelson ) saddlebag is supported with a bagman. I've tried it
without, and it sits just so on the mudguard. But in that position, it hits the
back of my legs, so bagman it is. The mudguard by the way, is split underneath
the brakes. The rear half can be removed without tools. This is to help pack
it, for carrying on a train. The pump has it's own attachment fittings brazed
on at the top and bottom of the seat stay. It is located there, rather than the
top or seat tube, to allow the bicycle to be more easily carried over rough
ground when pass hunting or, more common in my case, when going up and down the
steps in a Tokyo highway underpass.

The front gearing is 44x26 rings ( TA crank and BB ) which is quite common on
Japanese touring bikes. The builder was keen to explain the overlapping ratios
of a front triple, and the benefits of a low tread crank. The front ( and rear
) derailleur is a Shimano Dura-Ace. Despite having a narrow cage and fairly
large radius, the front shifting is fine. I wouldn't go throwing it from one
ring to the other with wild abandon, but it does it's job with no rubbing in
either position. I've not had to adjust it yet in 8 years or so. Likewise the
wheels, Ukai rims on Ultegra hubs, 650A tyres ( the most popular size in Japan
). The wheel rims are quite narrow for a touring bike, but are still true after
5000km a year on and off road in all weather, and no spokes need adjusting yet.
The builder did a good job, I think.

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-06 Thread Philip Williamson
Like DougP, I walked to the P.O. to mail my ballot on Satuday.

OT, but I believe Riv-attitude appropriate: This last week I've had an
ongoing conversation, not even a debate, with someone who at first appeared
to be my political polar opposite. It's one of the few online conversations
I've had that got MORE civil as it progressed. Man it made me feel good. It
literally started out with rage-noises, and ended with "as a sort of
friend, I want you to take care of yourself." I learned about him, he
learned about me. I don't think I would have been able to have that
conversation without learning some hard lessons on this list and the iBOB
list.

So "As a sort of a friend, I want you to take care of yourself," :^)

[RBW] Re: OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?

2012-11-06 Thread Savvas
Hi Jay,
I have never really had any issues either buying small items from the USA
or selling via ebay.paypal. For imports (to Australia where I live) there
is no tax or duty on bicycle parts as long as the cost is less than
Au$1000, no matter whether the item is new or used. The only hassles I have
ever experienced were problems a customer ran in to when I sold a nice Jack
Taylor SS from a friend's collection. I neglected to mark it 2nd-hand or
used - or didn't do so explicitly enough - and he was asked to pay extra in
customs duties in the USA on the basis that it was 'new'. I sent receipts
and evidence etc but I'm not sure how it was resolved. The only other issue
is the apparent cost of freight from the USA, It seems remarkably expensive
once a certain weight/bulk is exceeded. I have for instance received a
large box from Bike24 in Germany - standard post cost of $20 - that would
have cost several times that amount from the USA. In fact I have been
quoted $30 postage from the USA on the smallest items and even $120 on a
handlebar (both from retail stores)! I have found people in the USA (and
certainly on this list) friendly and straightforward to deal with. I think
we all struggle from time to time with the complexities of international
transactions though - part of the challenge I guess.
Savvas.

[RBW] Re: Cygolite mounting questions

2012-11-06 Thread John
Thanks for the ideas to all.

Looks like Ginos light is a good solution, but it works for M5 braze ons;
I've got M4 where I want to attatch the light (mid fork braze on).

Ditto for the VO gaget.

Charlie's solution might be my best bet: make my own. Of course I can do
this, but I'd rather not spend my precious time tinkering - I'd rather
spend it riding. I've got two small kids (4 and 6), a 50+ hr. a week job,
and etc. Finding time to ride is almost impossible, let alone tinker.

Charlie: I can attatch my Princeton EOS to my helmet if I want. I would not
normally wear a helmet lamp, because I prefer the light down lower so as
not to blind others (If I were trail riding, I might be of a different
mind).

This reminds me of a ride I took this summer. Although, we made the other
decision. Overlook road does not actually connect all the way in to the El

It is possible to lift a bike over a 10 foot tall gate, but you might not
like what you find on the other side. No pics, so there's no proof.

That is a gorgeous rack. The second set of bars seems such a simple
addition that greatly enhances the utility of the rack. Being able to load

have to mess with a bag on the platform.

So how about in the Delaware Water Gap?

One of the first tours I ever did was with the Mid Hudson Bicycle Club

at it, rode to the Peters Valley Craft Fair. It was our first ride on

Thanks a million! THAT is the rack I've been designing in my head off'n'on

Re: [RBW] Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-06 Thread Peter Morgano
Just wanted to add me and my daughter will be walking over to vote after
school, it is only a block away. I had someone at my kid's school ask me,
exasperated where I found the gas to get around this week. He was even more
exasperated it seeeds when I told him I had two legs and a nice bike and
have been happy with this system for 8 years. Although I do feel for those
who are reliant on cars, its not like they can just switch overnight to
some other system. Maybe the gas shortage here will open some eyes to the
benefits of cycling, walking and mass transit, a small bright side to a
huge tradgedy. Study out today said most cab rides in NYC are under 1.5
miles, that is what I walk every day to and from the subway. But anyway
GET OUT AND VOTE, FOR ANYONE, JUST DO IT!!!

Doug, I agree that a second set of bars beneath the platform would be
a good feature for many of the larger Nitto racks. I have a custom
rack that was made many years ago for my Schwinn Paramount by Jock

has the second set, and I've used it to mount the Berthoud GB799

I've used International Priority, International Express and less so,
International Airmail. I've posted to Japan, Canada, UK, Australia, South

Filling out the customs forms online is pretty much required. It's
automatic with Priority or Express, but you can also find it online for
your airmail, but takes a bit of hunting on USPS. Question? No, you're
exempt for anything with value less than $2500. I do find for valuable
items ($100 and up), Express plus insurance is only $2-3 more than Priority
plus insurance

Very interesting photo set. I'm curious about your own bike: the saddlebag
isn't attached to the seatpost, so it must be supported by the fender. Is

What holds the pump in place at the top of the stay?

And: what chainrings? The small must be a 26; how is the upshift to the

Thanks.

Lower/second set of bars like the Tubus Cosmo - a great rack. Only downside is
that the platform needs to be narrower, making it somewhat less than ideal for
trunk bags on the rear. Really great for panniers + saddlebag, though.

Jim:

Is the lower horizontal bar on the R-15 intended for pannier mounting?

An irritation that I have about the Nitto big back racks is the awkwardness of
using the platform with panniers installed. I've seen other mfgs racks with a
second set of bars a couple of inches below the platform. The second set
allows unobstructed use of the platform with panniers installed. IMHO the
Nitto big back rack would be much improved by a second set of bars and
eliminating the angle braces that seem to mostly get in the way of things.

The Berthoud GB799 panniers weren't well suited to the Campee rack,

Recently, pretty much by serendipity, I happened to find some on-line

That rack looked quite suitable for the GB799 panniers, so I ordered
the rack from Ben's Cycle. I mounted it on my Rivendell Road Standard
and I've been very pleased with the match to my Berthoud panniers!

The Nitto R-15 rack appears to have been purpose designed for the
Gilles Berthoud GB799 panniers - if it wasn't they certainly conform
to the rack quite perfectly.

Here's some photos of the rack and panniers on my bike:

[RBW] Re: Wood

2012-11-06 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Reid:

Riv Rally East is a weekend ride. The first one was in May 2011 with a
handful of riders converging on Wellsboro, PA for 2 days of scenic loops in
the Pine Creek Gorge area. In 2012 a larger group assembled in Cumberland,
MD for a 2-day point to point ride along the Great Allegheny Passage trail
up to Ohiopyle, PA. Riv Rally 2013 is still in the planning stages, but it
will likely occur on a weekend in May 2013, possibly with an optional ride
on Friday. Western Virginia is one possible destination; but stay tuned.

I have recently moved out to western NJ along the Delaware River (and BTW
we JUST last night got power back after a week of outage due to the big
storm)... There are lots of places around this area that would be perfect
for a S24O... The beauty of these types of rides is they can be
spontaneous... It takes very little planning... just pack up a few
essentials, grab an adventurous friend or two and head out on a Friday
after work... Oh, and make sure to be back before it's time to do your
Saturday chores...

Re: [RBW] Re: Tokyo Cycle Show ( Picture Set )

2012-11-06 Thread Tokyo Crank
The bicycles shown generally range from about ¥100,000 ( $1200~ ) for the
Miyata to about ¥400,000 ( $5000~ ) for the Grand Bois Porteur, which is an
order-made build. The very high yen certainly doesn't help foreign buyers -
Japanese companies in all exporting industries are hurting - but I think these
prices are still reasonable. As mentioned, it would easily be possible to spend
a lot more on a Taiwanese carbon framed bicycle with expensive wheels and
"top-end" groupset. I'm not knocking that as a choice, but it helps put the
price of these ( and Rivs, which use a lot of Japanese parts ) into
perspective. When I read Grant's comments about the high yen, I really
understand.

Thanks for the comments. I don't know if it shows up in a Flickr slideshow, but
I wrote some notes under each pic, including the price if I had it.

Paul, Tokyo

They look fairly similar to the sort of thing you see at NAHBS, and
those bikes are certainly affordable. After all, you can go down to

electronic shifting).
