Re: [RBW] Re: Not too off topic I hope...

2012-12-05 Thread Eric Platt
First off, I'm a bit of a camera hog, so have ended up with quite a few
over the years. Although don't have one, do like the 4/3 option with a
14mm lens. Jim Thill has one and is getting quite good photos from the
setup.

For point and shoots, currently am using the Sony RX100 which has a really
nice output, but is (a) probably not as robust as I'd like and (b) still
quite expensive for what it is.

But if I had to only own one point and shoot it would be a Ricoh GRD. Very
robust build. No zoom, although the 28mm lens is quite nice. The lastest
versions have a built in level which helps my photography. It's probably
my favorite small camera. (The Fuji X100 is better but bigger and more
expensive).

14mm lens on the bike. It is only slightly bigger than a PS. I also
picked up a GH2 which is slightly upscale, but uses the same lenses. That
one requires a strap/sling, but is still portable light. It all comes down
 to what you find worthwhile.

[RBW] Saluki

2012-12-05 Thread SeanMac
I have noticed several Salukis for sale recently on ebay. I know that this
bike was produced before the Bleriot, but I have had a somewhat difficult
time finding information about it on the web. I am hoping that a list
member or three might be able to shed some light on this bike for me.

I'm in the market for a bike for longer rides and perhaps some short
touring - Erie Canal, C O Trail, etc. I've had my eyes on a Sam for some
time, but have not yet pulled the trigger (might on the all-blue Sam - what
a deal). Would a Saluki be well-suited for this kind of riding or is it
really designed as a country bike / credit card tourer / rambler / century
ride bike?

How would the Saluki compare to a Homer?

I can't seem to find a chart that matches PBH to Saluki sizing. Should I
simply use the general chart on the Riv site, matching the 650b section to
my height to choose the correct Saluki?

Thanks,

Sean

Try the Internet Wayback Machine (http://archive.org/web/web.php) and see
if you can get info from an older version of the RBW website. But yeah, the
Saluki is basically a 650b Hilsen. Still, the SH for $1000 seems like a

[RBW] Re: Saluki

2012-12-05 Thread C.J. Filip
Hi Sean,

What's your PBH? If you're in the taller overlap zone of the Homers
and the larger Salukis (59cm-62cm), I may be able to contribute to
your questions.

I recently added a 60cm Saluki to compliment and potentially replace
my 59cm Hilsen. For now, I feel I'm at the point where I've
identified a great size and ergonomic setup, nearly perfect, and now
begin the process of splitting hairs. The Saluki is able to run
slightly wider (Hetre) tires and has cantis and feels a hair larger,
but that's probably due to the puffier 42mm Hetres (my Homer is an
early build and has the narrower tire clearance).

Aesthetically, the bike looks to be of the same high quality. My
Homer was made at Waterford but the Saluki probably at Toyo. The lugs
appear to be mismatched, the top lug of the headtube appearing to be
like the current Homers and the bottom lug of the headtube appearing
to be like the older pointy lugs. I like it.

Here is an archive page on the Saluki:

RE: [RBW] Re: Saluki

2012-12-05 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Mine is 86.5, and Riv suggested a 61cm Homer. Fits perfectly with Jack Browns,
but not a lot of extra room -- I don't mind that, and I think Keven knew that

I'm just shy of 87cm PBH and fit perfectly on the 59cm Hilsen. Here

Looks like for a given PBH the sizes on 650B compared to 700C are a
bit larger but should fit the same.

[RBW] Re: Saluki

2012-12-05 Thread Frank
I have a 62cm Saluki and a 63cm AHH and my PBH is 89.5. Mine are set up
differently, but if I were to go down the like-to-like line on a
per-component basis, they would be very similar. I love them both, ride
them both almost equally, and I've done light touring on both.

I've also ridden each of them loaded with 5 days worth of clothing and
stuff to support an extended vacation / stay in PDX on the Seattle to
Portland ride in years past. I didn't weigh them, but would guess that with
two panniers and a Hoss pretty fully packed I probably had 45lbs. of jank
plus 165lbs of me on the bike. Both bikes worked fine at 100m/d, though I'd
say they were close to the limit.

In any event, the Saluki is a great bike and would be well suited to the
riding you describe, though so would the Sam. Can't see how you could go
wrong either way.

with it's low Q and small ratios, except you are no longer limited to that
odd and often wobbly tiny BCD ! You can use the common 110mm BCD :)

But, if the other one costs $500 . h . prolly not going to be
near XD prices ...

Among the highlights is that Soma finally is embracing the inherent

Now they offer all the rings as freebie configuration options. That's

2012-12-05 Thread rperks
For what it is worth, these are in the same wholesale price league as White
industry crank sets with a WI bottom bracket. Likewise the Compass RH
offering is just a bit more without a bottom bracket. The corresponding
retail prices all appear to be in the hunt as well if you shop around, and
or ask your retailer of choice. IMO the real differences come down to
aesthetics, bottom bracket style, if ramped and pinned rings mean anything
to you, and country of origin. What is really good is the fact that there
are finally choices in the market that allow for lower ranged well spaced
doubles and triples.

The next step is finding a front derailer made in the last 20 years that
works well with a 48-44 ring and a 16-20 tooth gap between rings. There
are a few great vintage options, but new is a little harder to find.

I think those bikes are built by the same manufacturer in Taiwan so is the

Thanks Aaron! I agree, the front brake caliper in the photo is out of
tolerance--this is my primary gripe about the San Marcos. My 54cm SM uses a
standard (47-57) reach caliper up front and a long reach (55-73) caliper at
the back. I'm not sure if this is a design flaw or an operator error. For
what it's worth, these little issues are not heinous enough to deter me
from liking the bike because it has excellent handling characteristics and
 is fun to ride.

Incidentally, I am currently running the proper reach caliper up front

Only the 650B sizes of the San Marcos (i.e. 47, 51) use the long reach
Tektro 559 (55-73mm). The 700c sizes use standard reach brakes (47-57 mm).
 That'd be the Tektro R539 http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/brsbm59.htm.

 Ryan,
I actually have both bikes and have some thoughts to share with you
regarding both. Perhaps some of my experiences can help with your decision
 on which frame to purchase.

I bought a Sam Hillborne a couple of years back and went through a
number of drivetrain and accessory changes. It's been my go fast,
commuting, townie, and cyclocross bike so I feel qualified in comparing
both bikes. My Sam has had a number of personalities in regards to set up
and ride characteristics. I currently have it set up as a townie with
fenders, 32mm tires, drop bars, and a basket (*contemplating a dirt
drop stem and flat bars with cork grips*). I also have a San Marcos set
up as a commuter, club ride bike, and cyclocross bike. My San Marcos has a
mix of Shimano parts, 32mm tires, a Velo Orange rack, and drop bars. *To
answer your original question, the San Marcos is an excellent choice for a
 go fast bike.*

 *San Marcos Criticism #1*

I'm not sure if this is true for different sizes, but you'll need
standard reach brake calipers up front and long reach calipers in the rear
if you purchase a 54cm San Marcos. I am not sure if this is true of the
other sizes or with any other 54cm San Marcos frames. I am running Tektro
R559 brakes on this bike--the fit of the rear calipers is spot on however
long reach calipers up front don't seem to fit properly. Have a look at the
attached photo and you'll see that the fork was not designed for long reach
brakes. Conjecture says that this bike should use standard reach brakes and
that the rear brake bridge on my bike was welded too far upwards,
 necessitating longer reach brakes.

 https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hPpChC7_z00/ULul4qOoEJI/AuI/nMYrtVGrYoc/s1600/DSC00209.JPG

 *San Marcos Criticism #2*

The dropouts on this bike suck compared to the ones on my Sam. As you
can see from the photos, the front dropouts originally come with lawyer
tabs--I quickly filed those off after acquiring the bike. The rear dropout
eyelets are welded too closely to the frame and cause interference when
trying to mount a rack or fenders. The welds get in the way and prevent you
from mounting accessories in a flush manner. The second photo shows a
slight gap between the rack tab and the eyelets because the welds get in
the way. Moreover, the decorative part of the Soma dropouts interfere with
the quick-release hub skewer--this is not the case with my Sam.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U7UDrv1Nts0/ULul_MczA-I/AuQ/gNXYgLA5_9E/s1600/DSC00210.JPG

 https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-OiPJ0hY_jvk/ULumDgoGmRI/AuY/pDBz7q0BIEU/s1600/DSC00212.JPG

With all of that said, the San Marcos is an excellent bike and I am very
pleased with it. I have no trouble maintaining an average speed of 23mph
while on club rides. It is quite comfortable however feels very sporty and
agile when compared to the Sam Hillborne. Since you already have a Sam, try
to imagine your bike with easier maneuverability, a lighter feel when
climbing, and less squirrel*liness*. If you go with mainly Nitto parts,
more spokes than less, and wide tires, you'll have no worries about
durability if you end up with a San Marcos.

I haven't had the chance to test ride a Roadeo, but I imagine that model
to be much more suitable for fast riding than the San Marcos. The Roadeo is
a gorgeous frame, and would probably be the ONE frame I

Hello all and Happy Thanksgiving! I just wanted to see if anyone else in

I'll post some images of things that I've made.

During the past 2 years, I have been trying to perfect the rando bag but
ultimately have been displeased with its lack of sturdiness. I enjoy making
them, using them for a while, then gifting them to other cycling
friends--this is great because it constantly gives me the opportunity to
make new bags. While rando bags look great, I have yet to make one as
versatile as a Wald basket. And after many years of debate, I have decided
to stick with my Wald. With that in mind, I missed the tool pockets
typically found at the back of a rando bag. So, I recently decided to
create a couple of pouches to hang on the back side of my basket.

Both pouches are 2 inches deep, 4 inches wide, and 5 inches high. There
is also an extra 3 inches of flap available if I try to over-stuff the
pouches. It was relatively easy to construct these little bags because
canvas is such a forgiving material to work with. I have plastic stiffeners
inside the bags (very similar to the ones in Acorn bags) and velcro
attachments to keep everything in place. While these dimensions may seem
small, I have all of my tools in the left pouch (inner tube, patch kit,
multi tool, a pair of CO2 cartridges, 3 tire levers, zip ties, and 4 Irish
straps). The pouch on the right is used to keep my cell phone, garage
clicker, and keys; there is quite a bit of space left for snacks, a saddle
cover, and a bandana. I'd love to see the folks at Riv create some
Sackville versions of these because they're extremely versatile.

Have a look--I am attaching JPEG images to this post. Also, I'd love to
see any other accessories people make for their bikes.

[RBW] FS? 57 Rivendell Road

2012-12-05 Thread Ed Steck
I have too many bikes and am considering lightening my collection. I have
a 57mm Rivendell Road with 2 forks, 1 for short reach and 1 for long reach
brakes. The serial # is JS9932 which I'm sure all of you know is a bicycle
built by Joe Starck in 1999. It is Coleman Stove Green with cream head
tube and windows. The condition is at least a 9 out of 10. It is equipped
with a 10 speed Campagnolo Record Triple drive train. 172.5 cranks, Campy
10 speed bar end shifters, Campy record carbon brake levers, Chorus brakes,
Chorus cassette 13x29 gearing, Nitto S83 seatpost, Brooks Swift Ti saddle,
Mavic MA-40 rims, Chorus hubs, Wheelsmith DB spokes, Chris King headset
without graphics, 3t Record stem, 3t Forma SL bars 44mm.

I am not letting it go cheap and it might be worth more to me than I would
accept but am offering anyway.

Also have a 172.5 Zepher Crankset, 50-40-28 with companion Phil Wood BB
that would probably go with the bike.

[RBW] Saddlebag Advice? Saddlesack v. Carradice

2012-12-05 Thread David Banzer
Howdy!

Anyone have experience with Carradice saddlebags and Riv Saddlesacks? The
design of the Saddlesacks seem to be very well thought out and intuitive
for actual use.

I've been using a Carradice Camper Longflap and it's huge. Wonderful load
capacity. Too much load capacity for anything I can remotely need right now.
Also should have a Carradice Nelson Longflap coming in the mail today,
which is just a smaller version of the Camper? Just as wide?
Can't justify two very similar bags so one of will probably have to go.

Would it be unnecessary for me to spring for a new tan Saddlesack? They
look very nice.
Aesthetics aside, what advantages does a Saddlesack have over a Carradice
Nelson/Camper?

Thanks!

Coupla tweaks still to be made:
 - the Bosco Bullmoose bars are great for riding around town in a suit, and
will be fantastic in about a year when a child seat gets added to the
cockpit area. But I might need to swap them out for drop bars for the
longer ride to school. The wind along the river chooses to be a friend one
day and a foe the next. Usually when I'm already running late.
 - the wire that came with the taillight, for connecting to the headlight,
was designed to reach the fork crown, not the front of a rack, so for the
moment it's somewhat inelegantly running along one of the top tubes until I
 rig up a longer one.
 - stainless steel fenders are sitting at home waiting to get installed,
but the stays are way too long to be mountable and my hacksaw wandered off
to the home of a relative and has yet to return. Also needed for cutting
the kickstand down to size. Of course, I've never passed up the opportunity
to get more tools - maybe it's time to add a bolt cutter to the collection!
 - still looking for a toolkit to mount on the back of the saddle or
somewhere else out-of-the-way-but-always-there. I like the idea of Acorn's
 roll
bag http://www.acornbags.com/rollbag.html, but they seem to be
impossible to actually purchase. Maybe someone with a sewing machine will
be looking for stocking stuffer ideas.

Overall, though, I'm just happy it's ride-able, and that the gamble of
sinking in all the time, effort and money with no test ride has paid off
with such a fine machine. And of course finally packing away the workstand
is good for intra-household relations! I have enjoyed lurking and
collecting advice on this forum, and the influence definitely shows in the
 final product. Thanks, all!

I've lived on a steady diet of second hand, sub-500 mile B-17s that just
didn't work for somebody, so it need not be so cost prohibitive.

Tried a Selle Anatomica and, immediately comfy though it was, I felt like
I'd be out of tension bolt in three seasons.

Never sat on a Rivet or Berthoud or similar Brooks-alikes.

Also, my Schwalbes cost more than $120 for a full new shod every year or

[RBW] Re: Are Brooks Saddle Worth the Money?

2012-12-05 Thread hangtownmatt
Bill,

Thanks for the info. I've been doing my research and the Rivet looks
intriguing for all the reasons you describe. But I have to ask - When you
talk about contact with the inner thigh, is that the same as my issue where
saddle sores develop at the back of the thigh where it meets the buttox
just below the sit bone?

Another question I have is related to the cutout. I've read that it is
unique and designed for women. How would you rate the Rivet for relieving
genital pressure on men?

The reason for the test ride is to help determine if I should get the Pearl
(170mm) or the Diablo (155mm). My confusion comes from problems with the
B17 (170mm) and relief from the Specialized Romin Evo (155mm). However, as
we know, other factors need to be taken into account, and logic points to
the Pearl (170mm). I'm hoping that actually sitting each will help me to
decide.

On Saturday, December 1, 2012 8:02:21 AM UTC-8, Bill M. wrote:

 Matt,

If you look at an SA, a B17 and a Rivet Pearl from above, you'll see that
they are all about the same width at the widest part. The SA is nearly
triangular from nose to tail, the skirts are wide and flared but relatively
soft. The designer INTENDED for them to contact your inner thighs (per an
e-mail exchange I had with him before his untimely passing). The Brooks
has a little more 'shape' to it, the nose stays narrower longer than on the
SA. The skirts are more vertical, but there's still some contact there.

The Rivet's nose stays narrow much longer than that of the Brooks, then it
flares much more rapidly to the wider section. This is achieved by the
skirts being pulled together under the saddle and riveted together with a
small metal reinforcing plate. The result is that the Rivet eliminates
(for me) the contact point between the inside of the thigh and the corner
of the saddle. That makes a real difference in comfort, IMO. Also, the
Rivet leather is very stiff, so it supports the sit bones well. The more
you sink into the saddle, the more that contact point becomes significant.
It takes some real mileage for the Rivet to break in, so you can't judge
 one on the first ride.

I have the skirts of my B17 Imperial laced in tight, and have also laced
the skirts of my SA and pulled them in tight, but compared to the Rivet
those are only partially successful in eliminating that inner thigh
contact. My B17 Special is not laced (yet), but I have cut a fairly large
slot into the center of the saddle to relieve pressure from the 'hump' that
can develop in a Brooks over the years. I also have a Brooks Flyer that's
both cut out and laced, but it''s not currently in use. The SA, Imperial
and Rivet all come with cutouts. There's a pattern here!

 Hope that helps,

 Bill Mennuti

Would you please explain how the Rivet Pearl is different for your
anatomy? I ask because I've put 3,000 miles on a Brooks B17 over the last
7 months and have suffered horribly from saddle sores where the back of my
thigh meets my buttocks. I'm not sure if it is the shape of the Brooks B17
or its skirt that is causing me issues, but I finally gave up last week and
robbed Peter (vintage Bianchi) to pay Paul (Sam Hillborne). Sam is now
sporting a Specialized Romin Evo and the saddle sore issue is going away.
I'll stick with it if I have to, because it works, but I'd rather have a
Rivet, Berthoud or another Brooks model. I was supposed to test ride a
Pearl today but PNW weather is preventing that.

I sure wish there we more online reviews of the Rivet products.

Hey All,
I know this won't come as anything new to people here, but I personally
have never sold a frame or a bike I didn't miss. To sell either an Atlantis
or a Hunq has got to hurt.

I own neither, but do own (or have owned) similar bikes and I would sell
the Hunq. Then I would make the Altlantis do everythingincluding
perhaps the ability to swap out entire (at least bars and controls) in a
hurry and except the limitations. My 2 cents.

[RBW] FS vintage mountain bikes

2012-12-05 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have accumulated a couple time-capsule mountain bikes that may be of
interest to somebody on this list.

1. 1983-84 Specialized Stumpjumper SC, blue, seat-tube 20 c-c, top-tube
22.5 c-c. Bullmoose stem/bar. Still has the (seemingly) original
tan-sidewall Specialized Team Control tires in great shape. Bullseye hubs,
Suntour Mountech derailleurs, Sugino AT crank, heavy-duty Shimano brake
levers and Unishift Control friction thumb shifters,
behind-the-seat-tube-mounted Zefal HP frame pump, no saddle or pedals. Some
garage wear and a few minor scrapes and decal imperfection, but otherwise
in really nice condition. It has been stored in a dry garage for probably
15-20 years and probably needs a little air and pro-link, but it's
obviously well cared for and low miles. $600 shipped CONUS.

2. Late 90s Cannondale F700, size Small, seat tube 17 c-t, virtual top
tube approx 20 c-c. Excellent condition, and all original except I
switched to modern Deore levers and Tektro v-brakes and some modern Kenda
semi-knobby tires when I acquired it awhile back for my lady friend, who
never rode it. Mavic 220 rims (Coda fhub, Shimano rhub), XT rder, LX fder,
cool Coda 94/58 crank, SRAM twist shifters, headshock fork. $450 shipped
CONUS.

[RBW] Re: Saluki

2012-12-05 Thread SeanMac

Thank you for all of your help today. I spent the day on jury duty, so I
am a bit slow in sending thanks.

When I returned home I had my son help me to re-measure my PBH. We ended
up taking several measurements, typically getting a PBH between 86 - 87.
Based on Riv's chart, his seems to put me at a 56 Sam, a 58-60 Saluki (or
Bleriot) and 58-61 Homer.

I don't need a new bike any time soon, but it would be nice to take
advantage of a deal. However, since a new bike is a bike purchase, I want
to make the best decision possible - even if that means not buying
anything. The problem, of course, is that one can never know for sure what
deals will come by. However, since I live in Buffalo, it is pretty
unlikely that I will be outdoors on a bike any time soon. I probably
should hang tight and wait for a deal that I can't pass up.

Sorry for thinking out loud. I do appreciate all or your help / advice.
Someday I'll make up my mind!

Sean

per-component basis, they would be very similar.

 Thanks,

 Sean

[RBW] Re: Go fast bike: San Marcos?

2012-12-05 Thread Tony Lockhart
The build quality looks identical in both frames, however the paint job on
the San Marcos is not as good as on the Hillborne. All of the lugs appear
to be identical with the exception of the lower headtube lug on the
SM---more windows and more decorative.

Incidentally, I am currently running the proper reach caliper up front
because I had this nagging feeling that the long reach caliper would fail.

 Tony,

Quick head's up on your brake reach issue. Looks like you're using the

Did you try putting a standard reach brake on the front?

 Ryan,
I actually have both bikes and have some thoughts to share with you
regarding both. Perhaps some of my experiences can help with your decision
 on which frame to purchase.

I bought a Sam Hillborne a couple of years back and went through a
number of drivetrain and accessory changes. It's been my go fast,
commuting, townie, and cyclocross bike so I feel qualified in comparing
both bikes. My Sam has had a number of personalities in regards to set
 up
and ride characteristics. I currently have it set up as a townie with
fenders, 32mm tires, drop bars, and a basket (*contemplating a dirt
drop stem and flat bars with cork grips*). I also have a San Marcos
set up as a commuter, club ride bike, and cyclocross bike. My San Marcos
has a mix of Shimano parts, 32mm tires, a Velo Orange rack, and drop bars.
*To answer your original question, the San Marcos is an excellent
choice for a go fast bike.*

Have a look at
 the
attached photo and you'll see that the fork was not designed for long
 reach
brakes. Conjecture says that this bike should use standard reach brakes
 and
that the rear brake bridge on my bike was welded too far upwards,
 necessitating longer reach brakes.

 https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hPpChC7_z00/ULul4qOoEJI/AuI/nMYrtVGrYoc/s1600/DSC00209.JPG

The welds get in the way and prevent
 you
from mounting accessories in a flush manner. The second photo shows a
slight gap between the rack tab and the eyelets because the welds get in
the way. Moreover, the decorative part of the Soma dropouts interfere with
the quick-release hub skewer--this is not the case with my Sam.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U7UDrv1Nts0/ULul_MczA-I/AuQ/gNXYgLA5_9E/s1600/DSC00210.JPG

 https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-OiPJ0hY_jvk/ULumDgoGmRI/AuY/pDBz7q0BIEU/s1600/DSC00212.JPG

With all of that said, the San Marcos is an excellent bike and I am
very pleased with it. I have no trouble maintaining an average speed of
23mph while on club rides. It is quite comfortable however feels very
sporty and agile when compared to the Sam Hillborne. Since you already
 have
a Sam, try to imagine your bike with easier maneuverability, a lighter
 feel
when climbing, and less squirrel*liness*. If you go with

Hello all and Happy Thanksgiving! I just wanted to see if anyone else in
the Riv community enjoys making accessories for their bikes. If this is the
case, I'd love to see what innovative things you've made. In the meantime,
I'll post some images of things that I've made.

[RBW] Switching to Moustachios from drops?!?!

2012-12-05 Thread Michael
Anyone made the switch?

Seems like on every drop bar bike I dun rid, I just always feel too
stretched out. Even with my 7cm shorty stem and flat ramps. Even knowing I
have the correct frame sizes and have the bar above saddle height now.
On the tops, its always perfect. Hoods - feel too stretched out.
Hooks/drops - fuggettabowdit .5 mile at a time at best, and that takes
discipline.

I sit up at about 50 degrees when on the hoods.

So I was thinking of slapping a used moustache I have on the bike and
trying that.
Maybe my 44 year old bones just don't like drops anymore.
Maybe i am being too persnicketty and am looking for absolute comfort, when
there is no such thang on a bike?

Thoughts? Anyone made the switch?

The good part is it'll cost me exactly 0$ and 0 cents to try it. I can use
the tape/levers/shifters from my current setup on the staches.

[RBW] Road salt and Rivendells

2012-12-05 Thread Michael

I am going to try commuting thru the winter. Not in snow/slush. Just on the
dry days.
In the winter, there is a dusting of salt on the road after the snow melts
away and the roads dry up around here.
*Will riding on dry roads with salt residue be bad for the frame/components?
*
I am hoping the longboards will minimize probs.

2012-12-05 Thread cyclotourist
You'll be slightly more upright, but not hugely so. You may like them more
with a shorter (1-2cm) stem. I point the ends down a bit, so the inner
bends are close to horizontal.

For zero outlay, give 'em a try!

[RBW] Re: Switching to Moustachios from drops?!?!

2012-12-05 Thread dougP
Michael:

The price is right. Give it a try.

I tried M'stache a while back but didn't care for them. The front curve
where the brake levers are typically mounted was too far away, and the back
straight section made me turn my wrists at an awkward angle. Others swear
by them. It's hard to predict about handlebars.

As to persnicketiness, you should be reasonably comfortable, not feeling
stretched or awkward. As to absolute comfort, well, it is a bike, not a
barcalounger.

[RBW] Re: Are A. Homer, Sam, Betty, and Ives real peeps?

2012-12-05 Thread grant
The A. Homer Hilsen was going to be the Honus Wagner until the heirs of
Honus--through the law firm that represents the estates of Michael Jackson,
Marilyn Monroe, Sammy Davis Jr., and Honus--and others---at the last minute
before the signing of a deal which would have earned them $40 per bike
sold--well, the got greedy, wanted more, wanted to be able to buy an
unlimited number at our cost, basically got riduculous. So I said See You
Fine Folks and then they backpedalled, but too late. We came up w ith a
name that nobody owned, and it was AHH.

Betty Foy is the mom and hero in The Idiot Boy, a long poem by William
Wordsworth. I liked the poem so much I memorized it (can't say it all now),
and in that phase I named the bike. I kinda wish it were a genderless name,
or maybe a boy's name, which women don't mind buying as much as guys mind
Betty Foy. So we have Yves Gomez for that. YG was a mix of unlikely first
and last names, but Dave her found an Yves Gomez in Europe. We offered him
a great deal on a frame (below cost), but no answer.
The wife of a customer, frame owner, is Elizabeth Foy. She's been by, but
didn't bite on the bike named for her even at half off. Oh well.

My wife's now deceased sweet old aunt's last name was Hillborn without the
E. I like the name Hillborne anyway, and Sam is a good strong name, and we
went to names in the first place to sound less generic, less Strada
Excelsior or whatever. Mount This, Excellerata, Le French Mtn

[RBW] Velocity quality

2012-12-05 Thread Tim
Ok so I've had the Homer for 2 years and am about to get my third rear wheel.
Here's my story: Peter White built the bike and wheels. Velocity Synergy with
XT hubs and 36 spokes.I hit a pothole pretty good fairly early in the bikes
life. LBS said rim couldn't be tried so they built up another Synergy with my
hub. Fast forward to now. That wheel has maybe 5-7k miles on it and has stress
cracks all over it. They started around the spokes and spread to the sides. So
time for another. I'm working in CT now and found a LBS that knows what a Riv
is. Owner builds the wheels. Well, he says that Synergy rims (and Velocity in
general) are just not that good. I've heard the same thing out of a couple of
other people too, and they k ow more about wheels than me. Thing is, I can't
imagine why Riv and Peter would so highly recommend them if they're poor
quality. But my experiences are making me wonder, what with 2 wheels in around
10k miles. LBS guy is recommending a Mavic, I think one of the CXP styles
saying they're much stronger. What should I do???

Re: [RBW] Velocity quality

2012-12-05 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
There have been some bad batches of Velocity rims. I bet if you
contacted Velocity, they would replace the rim free of charge, but you
would have to build up the wheels. All of my Velocity rims have been
good so far. I hope it stays that way.

I built my first Mavic CXP wheel. It looks like a rim without
eyelets, but they are hidden, so I imagine they would be stronger than
say Velocity Aeroheads (which I also have). I like it a lot so far

Good luck,
Toshi
