C17 si also officially a composite material - I think you nailed it there, Doug - the frame is aluminum instead of steel. This saddle will open up a market to them. The C-17 definitely feels lighter (though of course that's not really a concern). It also is made with less material than a B-17 and doesn't have the 'skirting' down the sides. Since it doesn't feel as 'slick' as worn leather I wondering if it'll grab the inside of my pant legs. I guess we'll find out. The overall look of the saddle is pleasing and I'm sure it'll look nice on my Hunq (or QB). I was sent one in 'natural' and I'm pretty sure it's going to get dirty quick...I've heard that from one of the other testers who read an blog entry I wrote when I was informed I'd been chosen. Unfortunately I've to run a non-bike errand right now so mounting it and the first ride will have to come a bit later. I'm thinking I should just mount it and and then swap seat posts between my Hunq and my QB to give it workout on both bikes. While the first 100 have been chosen and probably have all received their saddles (living in Hawaii I'm probably one of the last to receive the shipment), the did open it up by 50 more. [RBW] Re: In-line cable housing quick release helpers?
All those in-line adjusters cost more than the Ritchey quick disconnect do-dads; if a person were inclined to go through the rigging necessary to install them I'll bet the actual cost would be more. What I do on my Rambouillet is set up the cable on those same Shimano calipers with the barrel adjusters backed out 75% of their adjustment range so if I have to fix a flat I can screw in the barrel adjuster when I am putting the repaired, pumped-up tire to clear the pads then return them to the original adjustment. I has been just enough to keep me off the brake shopping slope and since I have never had to use much of the available range of adjustment that screw has, it keeps things simple. Like anything, it depends on which ones you choose Andy. The Ritchey dodads are sold in singles, so we're talking over $20 a pair, but they are not even relevant to this discussion! Inline adjusters are sold in pairs, usually about $8-10. If you can tolerate non-Shimano brake levers (just mask or steel wool-off the branding!), any brake levers with the quick-release at the levers (ala Campagnolo Ergopowers) can double-up the brake opening to allow fatter tires on narrower rims to pass through without deflating. My Record Ergopowers operating Shimano BR-R650 brakes have enough space to let out Challenge PRs on Aerohead rims when both QRs are engaged. [RBW] Re: Your method of going around brake levers with cloth bar tape?
The Riv video shows the upper section being done from the brake lever up. Recently I tried ending both sections at the brake lever and found that it really works well. It makes the hemp twine thing unnecessary, but you can still do it just for looks. It works really well for a harlequin weave. For a single color, just be sure that you wrap the two sections in opposite directions, so the tape arrives at the brake lever on each side. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Your method of going around brake levers with cloth bar tape?
Some good advice here. Another top tip for troublesome cloth: soak it in water before you wrap. It helps it stretch, lay flat (not bunch and kink as much), and as it dries, it shrinks a bit so it's nice and tight. BTW, I only do this if I'm having trouble with a particular brand of tape, and/or bar shape. I usually try to wrap it dry first, and if I end up with lumps, etc, I'll unwrap entire side, throw it in the sink for a quick soak, and re-wrap. Works for me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The levers come with a little insert that goes under the hood, depending on where on the bars you want them - and an instructional picture that was useless. It was a little awkward getting that on but after that the installation was a snap. The brake cable goes over the lever and you get a really good view of the hole you are trying to hit. That's important for my old eyes. The levers are very comfortable, perhaps a tad narrower than the ones they replaced but very pleasing to my hands, both sitting and standing. They pull a lot of cable, which makes set up with canti brakes very simple. They have a very light touch and a nice feature on the quick release. Instead of resetting the QR pin manually these automatically reset when you compress the lever. Again nice for us old guys who often say the Senility Prayer: God grant that I only forget the people I don't like, only bump into the ones I do, and the eye sight to tell them apart. Patrick and Mike great photos and stories, the panos from the look out are very nice, next time out to Colorado I want to head that way. Having to bail on a is something I smacked head first into last year my first summer back on bike, I naively undertook my longest ride the day the heat index was extremely high, based on memories of man long rides in eastern Oregon and other places, so going 25 miles seemed easy. The thing I forgot, even though I'd trained all winter, was I was 15 years older with out the lifetime base I had maintained previously. Anyway, I checked in with my wife a couple of times on the return, to let her know I may be running late for an appointment we had that evening. the last check in I sounded kind of befuddled to her, so much so that she insisted she pick me up on her way home from work. That was the first time that ever happened to me. When she did pick me up she recognized that I was in the early stages of heat exhaustion, I was shocked to say the least after all 15 years ago I could regularly ride 100 miles in heat. That was my first lesson in the difference between my perceived age and ability and what I was actually able to do. It is still something I have a hard time realizing. [RBW] Quickbeam coming together
At long last, this frame will be built up for some summer fun! http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671211@N02/8998585724/ I'm going with 40t TA and 16t freewheel and 15t fixed, hoping to play around riding fixed this summer, as I've only experimented previously.Pauls, Thompson, and a rad Deep V front wheel I got at a bike swap. May go with a colorblend front tire in honor of Sheldon. My friend William uses a 90 degree stem with the Jitensha bars, as it gives them a tilt that's supposed to be ergonomic. Any thoughts? I like Garth's idea best: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TEAMSSX-New-JAGWIRE-inline-adjuster-5mm-brake-cable-BSA058-Black-/300907763957 For foolish, inefficient, and sentimental reasons I'd like to keep my current generic Shimano brake levers (unless I switch to period Dura Ace ones) as well as the Shimano calipers -- I want as much as possible an all-Shimano build (one day will replace the TA with a 7400 crank, too). Re: [RBW] Your method of going around brake levers with cloth bar tape?
IIRC, Grant had an article in a long ago RR about taping bars. I use a separate 3 strip around each lever and behind the bar -- hold it on with a spot of glue or something -- and then wind tape around the lever body from the bottom -- and hope that the roll is long enough. Re: [RBW] Help Mounting Challenge Eroicas
Again, my Parigi Roubaix lie as flat as a ribbon, even though they are loose enough that I can remove the beads from the rim with my hands -- that is, I don't need a tire lever to remove or replace the beads. Mine are stretched, of course, but so will yours be after a few days. Once the beads are loose enough, it's no big deal to shape the carcasse to accept the slightly inflated tube (I blow it up with my mouth), that is, wrap it with your hands over the slightly inflated tube, and then work the remaining bead over the rim. My rims are Open Pros, for what that is worth. On Sun, Jun 9, 2013 at 4:11 PM, cyclotourist cyclotour...@gmail.com wrote: That's what I've done, hoping it will help. Re: [RBW] Re: Help Mounting Challenge Eroicas
One more remark: my 23 mm (22 mm actual on 19 mm outside rims) 650C Michelin Pro Race 3s also lay flat-as-a-ribbon after initial installation, and had the additional difficulty of being much narrower than the Parigi Roubaix. Still, using the technique I described, the tube went in and the beads went on on the first installation, and afterward they got easier -- still harder than the wider P-R. I think that if you let them stretch, then try again, you will find that it's not that hard. A used tire mounts easily and can be removed without tools. A new tire is another story. I decided to pre-stretch the tire on an old wheel I had around in the shed. It was extremely difficult getting the first bead on at all. I had to use tire levers to wedge it on, and a toe strap to hold my gains. I then installed the other side without a tube using tire levers and let the tire sit for a couple of days. A little spray on the inside of the bead with Windex helped get the last bit over. After that initial stretching period, I removed one side and installed a narrow 700x23 tube, then remounted the tire (challenging, but nothing like the first time, and again a little spritz with Windex helped) and inflated the tube. After a week or so I found I needed to mount the tire on a wheel that's actually used on the bike. It mounted with a little difficulty, but nothing I'd write a list posting about. In my opinion, pre-stretching is the way to go with these Challenge tires. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Roadeo Ride report with a twist
So i took my newly acquired Roadeo for a 200km charity ride this weekend (100km per day), it was a Ride to Conquer Cancer, Roade was set up thusly 46cm Noodle Bars Microshit Bar End Shifters 42/26 White Industries Crank Ultegra/Open Pro Wheelset 11-28 cassette What I learned during the ride 4 rides totalling 125km over a 2 month span DOES NOT constitute and adequate training plan for a ride covering 200km over 2 days Riding a bike over 200km before you have dialed in the fit in NOT a good idea a 42/28 crankset is perfect for handling the most extreme climbs (their were 4 brutal ones over the two days) however it leaves you short on the flats and struggling to keep up, this crankset will be moved to a 650b commuter/rando bike and replace with a 46/32 crank that will serve me much better assuming i train a little harder for next year which should not be hard Its been a rough 2 months since I lost my beloved wife to Cancer, she was my inspiration from the day I met her and will be to the day I die. Most importantly I learned how important it is to Just get back on the bike which is one of the mottos of the ride, despite dealing with leg cramps and saddle sores and a group that dropped me after every put stop (with my blessings of course) I managed to keep getting back on the bike knowing that what I was going through was nothing compared to what cancer patients and their families live with every day. The event raised 19.1 Million Dollars and I remain hopeful that Cancer will be beaten in my lifetime. The roadeo itself rode beautifully and attracted a few appreciative comments particularly form the bike mechanics who donated their time as well as needed parts for riders in distress at every pit stop. I look forward to making the needed fit adjustments which will serve to make the bike even more comfortable and lively, I cannot imagine how painful the ride would have been on a different bike. t will upload more photos tomorrow -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Trevor: Fantastic that you undertook this challenge shared your story with us. We all must recognize that cancer touches most of our lives in some way, and do what we can to help out. [RBW] OT - high up in the Texas hill country
I thought this photo came out nice. My buddy Stevo had a weekend birthday bash for his daughter at his mother-in-law's ranch on Muesebach Creek SE of Fredericksburg. My daughter was among the guests, so we had planned a morning ride while the girls were sleeping in, and I drove in early this morning with his bike and mine. He has a Reno ride after labor day, so his mind is on training for the climb. Started off in light rain, but Texas summer rains don't cover much territory. We rode to Luchenbach and climbed on to our rest stop at the Old Tunnel Wildlife Area, which is on top of the divide between the Guadalupe and Pedernales Rivers http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/aP6090007.jpg About 50' below us, as the name implies, about 4 million Mexican freetail bat mamas are napping. Their offspring, along with 50 million others, are in the nursery cave in Breckenridge - 50 miles away. The daddies stay in Mexico. The mamas feed them 5 times each night - astounding they find their own. Certainly a cool place at sundown, since you have good access to the tunnel outlet - one of the few places you can get up close and personal with the emerging bats. Here's a short video taken a few years ago. http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bulldog1935/media/mosquito/bats/bats035.mp4.html From May to October, all the airports in the region have a 45-minutes embargo every evening around the bat emergence, since it blocks their radar. Anyway, it was a quick ride down to some great strawberry and pecan pancakes waiting for us. The girls picked the fresh strawberries yesterday and Stevo's BIL roasted them with the pecans to make the pancakes - he's quite a chef. Oh yes, the ride - we had about a 5-mile downhill before we got to the slight climb at the Muesebach creek divide - we were flying downhill. Here's my buddy Stevo. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP6090004.jpg We've been riding together since 6th grade (also fly fishing, camping and kayaking). We rode together in college in Austin. Rode together with and without our ex-wives (all of them). Now our teenage daughters are best friends, and we do all these things with them, as well. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/estes/campout/aP3110031.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Help Mounting Challenge Eroicas
Hopefully these Eroicas (presuming I get them mounted) won't be quite that delicate. To my imprecise hand, they feel about the same thickness as my worn Jack Brown Greens, and those have only punctured once, and was actually a spoke poke so didn't count. If they just don't work out there's a ready market for them, so I won't lose too much money on the educational process. Awesome! With abandon, Patrick On Sunday, June 9, 2013 7:48:05 PM UTC-6, Ron Mc wrote: I thought this photo came out nice. [RBW] FS: custom front rack
Hi folks, I'm selling a custom front rack that was made specifically for a Saluki. It should also fit any of the Rivendells with similar tire clearances/forks (Hilsen, Hillborne, etc.). I've fit it on my Atlantis as well, but it's not ideal for the huge tire clearance. Rack: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2201318727/in/set-72157603399387630 Entire set from when I designed it and Steve Rex fabricated it. It's now his standard rando rack on custom bikes. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/sets/72157603399387630/ $200, San Francisco/Marin pick up gets preference. Otherwise buyer needs to cover shipping cost. Re: [RBW] Re: Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look
And now the final bit, at least for now. I rode the new C-17 Cambium from Honolulu to Haleiwa (73.5 miles from where I started to where I stopped). The saddle was fine and my rump doesn't feel like it had a bad time of it. I think that I might have been slightly more comfortable with one of my reliable B-17s (like the I did this ride with on Memorial Day). On the other hand it may simple be the way I was feeling today. I'd really have to A/B this several times to report reliably. The saddle did pick up a bit of dirt today, mostly from my hands though I tried to be careful. It is the natural color version and this wouldn't be an issue with black or another darker color. So far so good with the Cambium. I think it's really going to come down to a matter of taste as to whether one likes this thing or not. I'm not going to switch out all my leather saddles for the C-17, but I'm finding it to be a quality product that's comfortable without break-in, looks good if it's to your taste, and doesn't involve livestock. The ride itself was nice. I had a couple of mechanical issues after 60 or so miles. I started hearing a lot of rattling. On my RIvs that's pretty rare so I slowed and tried to narrow down the noise. Turns out that, even though I did use beeswax, one of my bottle cages had loosened. Not a biggie. A couple turns with a handy tool and I was off ...only to find that I could seem to select certain gears and when I tried I heard...a lot of rattling. Hmmm...this seemed a bit more serious so I immediately pulled over. Looking down at the rear derailleur I discovered that a bit of wire had wrapped itself around the rear cassette. It took a couple of minutes to untangle but didn't do any damage. Once I took off my gears worked normally and everything was silent again. When I got to Haleiwa I had a quick smoothie and then sat outside at a Thai place so I could get a nice bowl of Tom Ka - Thai coconut based soup. Yum. Just thing after a long ride. I then hopped the regular bus (all our buses have bike racks) and my troubles really began. I had no trouble putting bike in the rack, fit fine and the springed loop was tight around my front wheel. The driver braked and moved and braked while I was trying pay and I figured, Oh great, a cowboy. How right I was. This guy really braked hard, cornered poorly, and I swear he hunted out potholes (though I won't put that one in my complaint). In any case as we approached town (after 30 miles? of cowboy driving) he called out and said, You'd better get your bike, you didn't put it on properly. BS. In any case, the springed loop was off and my biking was leaning forward pretty far. I secured it and had to endure a lecture from the driver on using bungie cords (I've never needed one before btw). Finally I just said fine, I'll take my bike. I took it off, he drove away and I discovered I was f'd. The bike had leaned so far forward it has actually damaged my rear rim. It wobbled something fierce and I figured I'd have to true it up. I wish. As it turns out the rim was actually cracked. It didn't look particularly safe to ride, but after opening the back brake I gave it a try and decided that as it was broken anyway I might as well try to get home the final 6 miles. It held. Not something I'd really want to do but I take really low traffic streets so I figured it was better than walking. I've got a few photos from the ride today and you can see a couple pictures of the rim taken after the fact. When I got home I switched seat posts and saddles with the Quickbeam so I can ride to work tomorrow. I'll take a few pictures of how it looks on the QB and let everyone know how I like it on a single speed. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157634040592240/ Aloha Broken Wheel Bob On Sun, Jun 9, 2013 at 12:21 AM, Ron Mc bulldog...@gmail.com wrote: C17 si also officially a composite material - I think you nailed it there, Doug - the frame is aluminum instead of steel. I wonder if the Cambium might break into the I like Brooks but they are too heavy market? I wonder what a C17 on titanium rails would weigh? Perhaps Brooks could sell them to the carbon crowd?
