[RBW] Blue Rambouillet 650b conversion complete! Rambouilleriot!!

2016-11-14 Thread lum gim fong
See it here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/70237737@N00/K1b855

I originally had my Rambouillet set up as 700 x 28c. BB height of 26.5cm.
Still not enough fender clearance for my comfort level.

After converting to 650b x 42mm, the BB height is now 26cm. Same as my 650b
Bleriot, and I have 170 crankarms on both bikes!! So should be as pedal
strike free as the Bleriot, I hope. Way more fender clearance now.

Sorry for the bad fenderlines. But the plastic fenders seem to have locked
themselves into the shape they were in on my old Sam bike. I hope to get
some Honjos soon, and a VO Rando rack, as the M18 is way too high now.
I hope to bend the VO tang to my preferred height so it sits right over the
future Honjo fender.

I used Tektro R559 brakes. The front brake reach is fine with Koolstop
Dura2 salmon pads.
I used Kool Stop Thinline pads on the rear brake as it needed another mm of
reach to reach far enough.
Standard rear R559 pads didn't reach all the way on the right rear arm of
calipers. Just a mm shy or so.

A big shout out to Rod O'Connor (for the frame), and ttoshi, and Leslie
Bright from this forum for all their pointers on the conversion and
Rambouillet info in general!

Enjoy the pics!! It rode great as a 700c. I hope to report back with a 650b
ride report soon.

Patrick, did you spec the frame to be 126mm?
Grant liked to spec at 128 and 132.5 for versatility but a 1999 frame built
for 126mm is very odd.

[RBW] Want a San Marcos!

2016-11-14 Thread Ashwath Akirekadu
Hello folks,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Have much enjoyed the discussions and
pictures here.

Big fan of Rev bikes. Have finally decided to build San Marcos. However,
I'm having a hard time finding a 51cm size frame. None of the
distributors, dealers and stores seem to have one. Any suggestions where I
might be able to source one? Also, anybody here interested in selling
theirs? Let me know :) Cheers.

[RBW] How to crash by yourself

2016-11-14 Thread Ian A
I think you'll find the scars won't be noticible. I got hit by a car - tagged
me from behind and launched me at speed down the road. I had thirty odd
stitches in my forehead, but was stitched by a plastic surgeon.

The best thing is to protect the skin from sun exposure and use some healing
ointment like aloe Vera or the tea tree oil etc. Malalucca do a Tea tree oil
gel which works fantastically well. Also, clay works well in the early stages
of healing and affords sun protection. It does look like you're wearing make-up
though.

Hope you get the bike back. Please let us know if you do.

[RBW] Road Hunq?

2016-11-14 Thread John G.
I saw a fellow riding a Hunqapillar on Old River Road north of the George
Washington Bridge this weekend. He was moving at a decent clip. I pulled up
alongside him, mentioned I was a fellow Hunqapillar rider, and we got to
talking. He runs 38mm compass tires on his Hunq, which got me thinking about
how common this setup is. I have 50mm Schwalbes, but I mostly ride on pavement
(detritus-strewn, crater-pocked Metro New York pavement).

Anyone else riding their Hunq mostly on pavement? If so, what tires are you
running?

[RBW] Woolpower, DeVold, Wabi Woolens?..

2016-11-14 Thread Max S
As the cold weather (slowly) approaches, I'm thinking of investing in a
quality wool jersey, hopefully one that's made from a denser, thicker
fabric, but comfortable without a base layer. These could well be mutually
exclusive attributes, but maybe there's some new magic out there in the
wonderful world of wool? Does anyone have first-hand experience with
Woolpower

or DeVold

that Riv sells? How do they feel compared with, say, Wabi Woolens

(their Winter Weight Jerseys), and are any of them wearable without a base
layer?

TIA!

[RBW] RBW Web Site

2016-11-14 Thread Hugh Smitham
I'm away from the homestead at the moment, accidentally got caught in the
Canadian customs. Looking for "H St" I should have zigged left but went
straight. Those Custom agents had fun with me and the missus, wish I took a
picture but I was explaining why I have a set of finger prints in the
system...thought about making a break for it with the current state of affairs
but decided to stick it out. While in the cozy warmth of Canadian hospitality I
went on the Riv site and though I didn't try to access my account I did find it
an improvement over the old site especially navigating via smartphone. Can't
say as much about my driving skills.

Depends on how you define "one sitting". Tours are clearly not a single
ride. Some people treat a 1200K as a single ride, i.e. no sleep breaks. Of
course most people get off the saddle even riding a century, at least to

assist me in raising operational funds for the El Cerrito High School
Mountain Bike Racing Team. I'm the volunteer team mechanic.

Here's a photo: 54cm Pacer

It's easy to find the geometry chart, but let me know if you have any
questions at all. You would donate $300 to the ECHS team. The team
treasurer would send you a letter with our tax ID so you can write off the
$300 donation as a tax deduction. I send you this Surly Pacer frameset for
free. That's how it works!

I've got lots of parts if you want to donate more and end up with something
more like a complete road bike.

If we're talking about more than one sitting the longest ride I've been on
was a little over 6,000 miles in a solo tour.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Road Standard - spreading the stays?

2016-11-14 Thread Matt Beecher
Thanks for the offer Eric, but I am trying to get away from freewheels and
moving to cassettes on any bike that I can, except a few very old ones
where it would not be period correct (50's Criterium, Stella, Peugeot, &
Hetchins).

As for "jamming on the 130mm wheelset", there is nothing to apologize for.
 Live and learn..

I'm still not certain this is a custom. Ignoring the powdercoat, which was
done when I had the frame repaired, there is nothing that makes this appear
custom. I bet some of the early Rivs were spaced at 126mm.

Cheers,
Matt

[RBW] FS: New 700c LX/A23 wheelset

2016-11-14 Thread lum gim fong
Only rode them about 250 miles, so that is why I am calling them "new".
Fabulous wheelset.

Custom built at Gravel and Grind in Frederick, MD a few months ago.

Sapim Race spokes, double butted. LX hubs/A23 rims. 135 rear hub. 8/9/10
type shimano type freehub.

An all silver colored wheelset that spins smooth, quiet, and true.

I just want to stay with 650b so I am selling this wheelset.
And just FYI, Compass 28 and 32mm tires bead seat automatically on these
upon first inflation.

$400 cash or paypal. I paid 535$, I think. I have receipt if you want to
see it.
I am in the DC/MD area if anyone local wants to take a peek.
Pics to come later.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Road Standard - spreading the stays?

2016-11-14 Thread Eric Karnes
sounds like you fixed it, but in the future if you need a brand-spanking
new 126mm hub (and don't mind using a freewheel), i've used those
velo-orange high-flanges on old treks and they're pretty nice (and nice
looking). keep a lookout as they occasionally put them on special for some
reason. i picked mine up for $35 last year.

and apologies for my bad advice on jamming the 130mm wheelset in
there...531 must be significantly more flexible steel. that's what i get
for pretending i have any knowledge metallurgy.

I would add the length back with a second Quick Link and put the old RD back
on. I've been through that whole process of using shorty derailers and trying
to avoid certain gear combos, and it's fer the boids I tell ya. I'd rather
shift whatever combo is available, and carry an extra link in a saddlebag to
assuage my probably unnecessary concern for failed Quick Links.

[RBW] 11/13 BLUG (re: a-fib)

2016-11-14 Thread dougP
This may have been posted before but it's worth a re-read:

http://velonews.competitor.com/cycling-extremes

A bit long & detailed but the best discussion of a-fib & v-tac that I've
seen outside of medical publications. I'm NOT a medical person, just a
customer & recipient of some of this incredible technology. Long story
short, I dodged some bullets without knowing I was being shot at.

One of the key points about these conditions is they can strike without
warning, often with little or no pain. Classic heart attack symptoms such
as shooting pain down the arm, chest pain, etc., probably won't happen.
You just feel a bit dizzy, light headed and short of breath.

Another problem is a regular old EKG may not detect a-fib. You need to be
aware & push the issue with your Dr to get more sensitive tests.
Cardiologists are reluctant to go fishing; they prefer to be handed the
pole with the fish on the line. Problem is you are the fish, gasping for
air.

The big takeaway is that exercise has its place in heart health BUT there
can be too much of a good thing. The big problem is knowing where that is
for each individual. Many of us feel "it won't happen to me", but then
cyclists don't expect to get hit by cars, surfers don't expect to get hit
by sharks, golfers & lightening, etc.

If you've been doing serious exercise / training for a few decades, give
Grant's post a thought & read the Velo article completely. Good stuff to
know.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: GB Aravis Saddle, Compass Barlow Pass Tires, Schwalbe Furious Fred Tires, Brooks B17 Black, Nitto F15, Silver Hupe

2016-11-14 Thread Tim Gavin
I hung several bikes vertically in my garage, using similar J-hooks. They
work, but I can see why other hooks are better-designed for vertical
mounting.
These simple J-hooks rotate easily, which means I often have to re-adjust
them before hanging a bike. These simple J-hooks work great for hanging a
bike upside down from the rafters, but they're not ideal for hanging a bike
vertically (but they do work).

Whereas, a hook mounted on a plate that can't rotate works even better for
hanging a bike vertically on the wall. Here's one for less than $5.

When the J-hooks I used start to strip their holes in the studs, I'll
probably replace them with similar plate-mounted hooks.

The rear wall of my garage is semi-finished (bare sheetrock), so I put a
strip of adhesive vinyl tape down the wall where the bike tires make
contact.

Jon, for your chain splicing, did you attached with pin (pushing pin
back in)? I'm considering just adding back in one of the links I
removed, but worry it might actually be less safe due to weakened
connection/possible chain break.

Back in the day, this was the conventional and only way to remove and
replace chains. It's still considered OK thru 9 speed chains for the
most part, but once you get to 10 and beyond it's no longer recommended
at all. For Shimano chains, back in 7 speed days they went to a
replacement pin with a pointy nose, a bit like a metal suppository, and
once you drove the in in you'd break off the tail. SRAM and others went
to quick links.

I just used two quick links about 5" apart. I was a little concerned, but

Re: [RBW] Clem RD Chain Tension

2016-11-14 Thread Jonathan Anderson
Thanks all for the input. I'm using a double up front (stock Silver
38/24). Agree, if I could do it over, I would have left an additional link
so it drooped in small, small, but was closer to 45deg. in big/big. It's
not dramatically past 45, which is why I decided to defer to the wisdom of
the crowd to determine if I could safely ride as is. Sounds like it should
be ok, but a bit of additional slack would be optimal. I'll probably keep
as is for a few more rides to better assess how often I find myself in this
gear.

Jon, for your chain splicing, did you attached with pin (pushing pin back
in)? I'm considering just adding back in one of the links I removed, but
worry it might actually be less safe due to weakened connection/possible
chain break.

Thanks again.

[RBW] Re: High Riding Handlebar Bag

2016-11-14 Thread Jon BALER

I came up with my own decaleur mounting, and you could attach your klick
fix mount in a similar way. I used an old pump mount and Minoura
Accessory Holder with Angle Adjustable LW-Clamp. You could move the mount
from the stem to a lower bar position, by just using the Minoura clamp.
They make some other versions that clamps to the bars or steerer.

Re: [RBW] Clem RD Chain Tension

2016-11-14 Thread Patrick Moore
Your rd obviously doesn't have the takeup required for the range involved.
That said, do you use the small/small? You don't say if your crankset is a
triple, but I assume it is. If it is, you don't use the small small; you
use the small ring onlly with the 3 or 4 largest cogs, where, very likely,
the derailleur will tension the chain adequately.

In the event, I've perversely installed short cage (and 8 speed, at that)
road derailleurs on mountain bikes, and simply let the chain dangle in the
granny + 2-4 smallest rings. I never used these combos, so any problem was
solely academic.

Of course, you could always put the other rd back on ...

I used a medium cage XT (clutch) shifter on my Rosco build, and it has been

the new KMC chain wasn't long enough, so I had to splice in a few more

2016-11-14 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Sorry to hear about your crash, hope you heal quickly.
It may be a longshot, but I think it could be worth putting up a sign at the
crash site. Someone may have simply picked up the bike because it appeared
abandoned. A sign saying "missing bike" in big letters, along with a simple
description and contact info (+ small reward?) might get noticed. I say this
because a friend found a nice racing bike apparently abandoned near her house.
She took it from there just so it wouldn't get stolen. In her case, she left a
sign saying all of that. Worth a try, maybe.

[RBW] FS: '92 RB-1 54.5cm

2016-11-14 Thread Patrick Shea
I bought this frameset thinking I could reclaim my double century days, the
ones where I rode 52/42 rings and just sucked up the pain, unaware there
were smarter ways to get up those mountain roads.

Real good shape, no dents or dings, usual scratches from riding and locking
but the decals are still nice and intact and it's nice to look at.

$400 plus shipping, local buyer gets a free bike part of my choosing (no
duds).

I can send pics/more info to anyone who is interested.

Cheers,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] How to crash by yourself

2016-11-14 Thread Ryan Fleming
I second what Erl said...you guys are tough. Sorry to hear about the stolen
bike and the broken Raleigh. For my accident when I was cut off by a right
turning car , I was very lucky my X0-1 was rescued by the fire department.
A fire truck accompanied the ambulance that took me to the ER. The kind
strangers who ensured I was sent to the hospital picked my bike up out of
harm's way and the firemen took it to one of their local stations. Scuffed
saddle is the only damage I can really see. I don't ride in winter but I'll
be back next spring and I'm already walking more like my usual distances.
So I'm thankful for that.

Anyway, I hope that you both heal well , and Brian I hope some good
samaritan returns your bike...but I like your attitude a lot!

As we all can appreciate , it could have been much, much worse .

Regards and speedy recovery to you both!

[RBW] Found rings and guard; now: Seeking 127-128 mm square taper bb assembly.

2016-11-14 Thread Patrick Moore
Someone offered me a very nice Phil, but it turns out to be a Ti model and
thus costs more than I should spend at this point.

I am looking for a good quality one, preferably a rebuildable one
(rebuildable by me or rebuildable by the maker) instead of a disposable
one.

A SunTour grease guard model would be very nice! So would a used, steel,
and cheaper Phil. Even a high end cup and cone would be acceptable, though
I'd prefer something relatively well sealed.

And a little Serendipity: just re-discovered that the cheap Shimano
cartridge bb in the Apex frame is ... 127! So I have something to start
with.

Segue: Am debating whether to keep the current 44/40 gearing, but with 28
granny instead of 26; or whether to simplify, give up some mid ring bottom
end, and use a bash guard, 40/28, as below.

The wheel is 28 1/2" in diameter, and the most commonly used gears, for the
flatland bosque riding that this bike mostly sees, are in yellow.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem RD Chain Tension

2016-11-14 Thread Steve Palincsar
A few years ago on a club Metric Century the guy I was riding with
dropped his chain and in the process managed to twist a link. As a
result the bike was constantly upshifting then immediately
downshifting. Finally we stopped, took out a chain tool and removed the
bent link. I told him that would be fine as long as he remembered not
to use the big-big combination. The route happens to end on two hills.
On the final hill, he forgot and accidentally shifted into the big-big.
Derailleur jammed in that position and wouldn't shift down. It took us
a half hour by the side of the road to get it so he could finish the ride.

As for quick links - the ones I use, that come with SRAM chains, work
fine. I've been using them for many years now.

Re: [RBW] Clem RD Chain Tension

2016-11-14 Thread ian m
What makes this "not all right"? Presuming derailer shifts smoothly in and
out of largest cog, what exactly is problematic about a derailer stretched
to this angle?

As long as the chain has a little bit of slack in big-big and shifts
without problem it's only an aesthetic, not mechanical, issue.

[RBW] Re: Clem RD Chain Tension

2016-11-14 Thread Jonathan Anderson
Thanks, Bill. I noticed that you've posted in the past about running a GS
XT with success. You noted 'stocking up' on them as you liked them so much
(don't recall model). The chain will wrap big/big without the RD (likely a
couple links overlap, at least). Even in the pic you can see there is a
reasonable amount of chain retained in the cage... It's not ideal, but it
does run through it. Do I risk it ripping off if I use big/big from time to
time? It looks perfect in big/small (perpendicular, if not offset to
rear). Agree long cage it optimal solution, but will require more chain...

Re: chain, if I buy two, should I use two quick links to attach them to
each other? Otherwise, wouldn't I have to secure one of the two ends by
pushing back in a broken rivet? I saved the links I removed, but had been
led to believe reinstalling was not advisable.

[RBW] Re: Clem RD Chain Tension

2016-11-14 Thread Matt B.
The long stays might mean you need more tension on the chain than you would
otherwise. I'd look into a clutch style MTB mech. Otherwise, the GS is
the short-cage Shimano and you may be better off with the SGS which wraps
more chain.

Thanks for the verification Bill. I had not measured mine recently, but a
130mm wheelset definitely does not fit without spreading the stays. I
thought that I had read the 126mm spacing online, but I cannot find that
now.
I found a 126mm spaced Hyperglide freehub wheelset, so I will use those
with a 7-speed cassette.

Well, what is shown in that photograph is definitely not all right. The
chain is too short. Where you get a longer chain is you buy two, remove
links from the donor and add them to the chain you will use (obviously
saving the links for future such transplants). If you're having
trouble with chain wrap you may want to consider one of the new clutch
type Dynasys MTB derailleurs. You cna make them compatible with your
road shifters with a Wolftooth TanPan. And avoid the big/big and
small/small combinations.

Appreciate your thoughts.

2016-11-14 Thread Ian A
What is it about the wheelset you are not happy with? If the hub is
acceptable, there is no reason not to use it in a new wheel build. Failing
that, VO have the Grand Cru in 126 OLD. - it is a freewheel. I'm
surprised at the 126 spacing though. My 753 double Joe LongLow had 130mm
spacing (possibly 132.5).

[RBW] Re: High Riding Handlebar Bag

2016-11-14 Thread Bill in Roswell GA

That particular Klick Fix system (and similar systems) does jack the bag up
high.

Klick Fix does sell another system that allows the bag to sit a bit lower.
The systems uses a bent steel rod that clicks into the bar-mounted holder.
The bars slide into sleeves on each side of the bag near the top.

Swift Industries makes such a bag
http://builtbyswift.com/shop/custom-paloma-handlebar-bag/
And the http://builtbyswift.com/shop/kitsap-paloma/ Scroll to bottom of
page to see one in use.

Seems like I came across another company that uses the same system, but I
don't recall the name.

My 1995 Road Standard was built to 128 mm spacing to accommodate either 126

spacing with an accurate caliper, if it's 128 I would just install a 130
wheel and be happy.
