Re: [RBW] Albastache + brifters

2017-01-06 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Ash,

Great that you ordered an Appa, but no reason to put the old horse out to
pasture when there is really nothing wrong with the bike other than it has
not been setup to fit your current situation.

I had a neck problem develop after sitting at a computer for years combined
with riding a racing setup with bars well below saddle. My neck could no
longer take being in the "crane neck" position.
After much research about bike fit and discovering that traditionally
cyclists did not ride a racing setup but used what is now referred to as a
French Fit.That helped me learn how to make most properly sized frames bit
me comfortably. Properly size frame, stem length/angle to get
proper/comfortable position on bike. Saddle position is much more a
personal preference and should not be used in an attempt to get a bike to
fit and even then, saddle shape and angle have a lot to do with being
comfortable.

That is to say, your bars are too low, partly because the stem is flipped
into the downward position. That stem is a 6 degree stem, so flipping it
over will raise the bars a few mm.
Using a 17 degree rise stem would raise your bars a good bit. You could
even get a longish 25 degree rise stem that would give the dirt drop stem
effect. There are online stem calculators that will give you the amount of
vertical and horizontal difference that stem length/rise can give.

Enjoy the new Appa with Alba bars, but make the Raleigh fit properly with
the correct stem. More bikes is a good thing!

Cheers,
Bill in wintery Roswell, GA

Yeah the guy with the flickr says it's a 58cm, this is listed as a 54cm. My

[RBW] Re: So what do I put in my tea now?

2017-01-06 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
In the end, though, it's not that complicated. I believe the advice is
"shop the fringes" or something like that. That's where all the unprocessed
foods are--vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, eggs, cheese. I like to get as
much of that as possible at my farmer's market or from my neighbors.
Curious why you have sugar in all your foods and drinks. For stuff that you
find you really do not want to do without it, there are other alternatives
that are less damaging, and don't spike your insulin so quickly, like honey
(tea, cookie recipes) or maple syrup (yogurt, oatmeal) or coconut oil (Wasa
crispbread, scrambled eggs, brussel sprouts, ). A teaspoon of sugar in
your coffee each day isn't the end of the world, though as Patrick says, I
find that after a couple of days, half and half adds plenty of sweetness.
Beacon right now has great municipal water. If I were in Flint, I might
choose bottled (unless it was locally bottled--lots of bottled water is
municipal.)

Using typical drop bar position feels similar (to my neck) to watching a TV
mounted 25 ft above the floor during the entire ride.
Also thanks for bringing up safety part.  It might be a significant factor for
some riders out there who are thinking using stem extender.  For my use though
it does not *feel* like there is a safety issue.  The upright position
significantly reduces the amount of weight that goes on the handlebar. Also, my
rides are mostly on flat roads.  I never exceed 15mph.    With the stem and the
extender both tucked all the way down, the setup is probably sturdy enough.
(which won't be the case I were to be climbing hills or riding fast downhill).
A better suitable bike frame is on the way, btw.  I've ordered an Appaloosa
frame.  Nitto Dirt Drop stem + ChocoNORM bar combination works great for me on
that (based on the test ride).   I acquired a Raleigh Record Ace from a friend,
which I'm planning on using for occasional fast rides.

I'm glad the bar is comfortable, but it's too high: first, is it safe? I ask
that question very seriously. With the extender and then the long quill toward
the end of its travel, you are going to torque those joints far more than
usual, and perhaps to the point of some sort of failure.
Second, if you want a bar that high, you really need a very different frame,
one with a much higher head tube. When you go to such an extreme measure as on
your Bianchi, you know right away that you are trying to make a silk purse out
of something else.
And third, there are other ways of getting torso/neck/arm/hand comfort than
merely by raising the bar to an extreme height. It goes against the
imagination, but often (I don't say always), putting your saddle further back,
so that your core takes over the work of holding up your shoulders and head, is
the first step in setting up a bicycle comfortably. You'll notice that bikes
designed for very high bars, like the Dutch city bike, also have very, very
slack seat tube angles, and I don't think that this is merely coincidence.
All of this is entirely removed from any question of a "racing" position. (Note
too that the drop bar design is among the oldest around because it has been
proved one of the most comfortable when properly set up.)
I chose the 2 images below at random and only afterward noticed that both show
Velo Orange bikes.
I don't mean merely to be critical. You will do yourself a real favor by
finding either a more effective way to get comfort, or else, a very different
design that does safely allow such an extreme bar position.

Re: [RBW] So what do I put in my tea now?

2017-01-06 Thread Tim Butterfield
For hot tea, no sugar is needed once you get used to it. I occasionally
put in a little honey if I'm desperate for sweetener or fighting off a
cold, but I usually have hot tea straight. This is for hot black teas and
white teas, not just the flavored kinds. I normally drink Dragon Black
Pearl tea, getting 3-5 individual cups steeped from two pearls. You could
also try steeping with a cinnamon stick for some flavor or add the juice
from 1/4 of a lemon. For cold teas, which I do not often have living now
in the PNW, I still prefer those sweetened, but that could just be habit
from living in the south for a long time. Some stevia might work also
though I have not really investigated it.

[RBW] assessing smooth tread tire wear

2017-01-06 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
If it's a treadless tire, then calipers may be the only way to know for certain
how thin the rubber has gotten. Or to perhaps inspect closely with a bright
light and magnifying lens (I have admittedly old eyes, maybe you don't need the
lens) to look for evidence of fibers showing through the rubber. I agree that
waiting for an increase in flats is pretty inconvenient. I prefer to replace
too early rather than too late.

[RBW] assessing smooth tread tire wear

2017-01-06 Thread lum gim fong
Compass says that for their tires once the center tread wears off you have 1000
miles left. Or was that kilometers? Nevertheless, I went more, coronally
bisected the tire, looked, and I still had a good mm of center tread left. No
rise in flat frequency.

 Sheldon Brown said:
"
it's your money, but if you are mainly concerned with safety/function, there
are only two reasons for replacing old tires:

When the tread is worn so thin that you start getting a lot of flats from small
pieces of glass and the like, or the fabric shows through the rubber.
When the tire's fabric has been damaged, so that the tire has a lumpy,
irregular appearance somewhere, or the tube bulges through the tire.
Cracks in the tread are harmless. Small punctures in the tire such as are
typically caused by nails, tacks, thorns or glass slivers are also harmless to
the tire, since the tire doesn't need to be air-tight.
Gumwall tires sometimes get unsightly blistering on the sidewalls from ozone
damage. (This is frequently caused by storing the bike near a furnace--the
powerful electric motors in typical furnaces can put a fair amount of ozone
into the air.) This blistering is ugly, but doesn't actually compromise the
safety/reliability of the tire in the least."

Thats all I know. But do whatever makes you feel safest.

I rarely use sweeteners, but when I do, it's usually a little xylitol. I
make sure it's made from natural sources (like hardwood trees or similar,
not made in some Monsanto lab). It's naturally preventative for tooth
decay, much lower in calories, and doesn't cause an insulin spike like
sugar does. You do need to be careful if you have a dog, however, as it is
toxic to dogs.

[RBW] assessing smooth tread tire wear

2017-01-06 Thread ted
Hey All,

How does one best determine when a smooth tread tire, like a Jack Brown or
Soma GR, is worn too thin?
The other weekend I found I had exceeded the lifetime of a Soma GR tire
when a flat seemed to be from wearing through it.
That seems like something I'd rather not do that way. Certainly I'd rather
not do it that way with the Jack Browns on my SO (on which I sometimes
commute).
Sooo, whats the right way?

note, going off an increasing rate of flats doesn't seem to work for me.

Great way to go! Except that flannel lines pants are't layering in the
sense that if conditions or needs change as you ride, you have an option to
remove a layer (or add one). A more flexible approach is to wear long johns

that's more money for bike stuff at least).

My question was partially a joke, as many people say not to consume
something or face the tragic consequences.

Modern western nutrition advice is like a never ending, flowing field of
ever changing zeitgeists.

Hard to sort through it all to see what is really true about nutrition.

Hi fat, low fat, no sugar, coffee causes cancer, oops... now it doesn't!
Who's backing which research, etc. Broccoli causes cancer,, whoops, now it
doesn't...

The more your body is addicted to sugar, the harder the transition, but fat
is very satisfying. It takes time for your tastebuds and taste satisfaction
triggers (via the amigdila I think?) to reset themselves to unprocessed
food. When they do, wow, do flavors pop! Perhaps break the addiction by not
having tea at all, but just having a mug of cream? Yum.

[RBW] Re: So what do I put in my tea now?

2017-01-06 Thread Ian A
For food and smoothies etc., I like to use dates for sweetener. Unsweetened
coconut flakes are naturally really sweet and also healthy and good with
various different foods Ground sesame seeds also add sweetness. For
coffee, I use organic cane sugar, but only a small amount typically. Tea I
drink without sweetener, but something like agave syrup might work.

I have used and liked a lot agave (cactus) syrup. Maple syrup also
actually works as sweetener, but I don't particularly enjoy it.

I think organic cane sugar is a good step away from commercial sugar if
nothing else works for you.

[RBW] battery powered taillight tinkering

2017-01-06 Thread S. Greco
I acquired a strange frame recently (650B Pedimoto Triple Triangle) which
had a braze-on for a taillight on the back of the seat tube. I didn't have
a dyno-hub wheel set for the bike, so I was on the hunt for a battery
powered one. To my knowledge, the only one available is from Boulder
Bicycle? I ordered one, but when it arrived I realized that it was threaded
M6 frame was drilled and tapped for M5 - it seemed unwise to drill out
and re-tap the frame, so I gave it to a friend. He remarked that it was
funny that it matched the custom-made taillight on his Tournesol - slightly
different housing but same electronics and lens. Looking through the
paperwork that came with the Boulder Lamp it included instructions for the
re-housed innards which are . . . a Road ID Supernova.

I'm wondering if anyone else has done this, or seen this lens on other
custom lights?
The Road ID is great on its on - bright, lasts long, clips onto anything,
comes in a few colors if you're into that, and you can choose between
always-on and blinky by flipping the battery orientation. Oh, and it's only
14.99 from your local amazon store : )

To be clear, i'm not knocking anyone. I think its a pretty ingenious find /
starting point for a lamp project.
Armed with this knowledge I simply bought the Road ID light, machined off
the clip and turned my own housing on a lathe.

The Boulder Bicycle taillight:

The "RoadID Supernova" :

My new taillight :

If you have access to a lathe and some free time on your hands I highly
recommend this as a project. The whole thing only took about an hour and
would be even easier and faster if it were designed to bolt onto one of the
many hourglass shaped braze-ons which are plentiful on most Rivs these days.

Cheers,

- Steve

Regarding size and ride performance:

I had a 55 Bleriot.
I then got a 53 Bleriot.
I think there was a 3 pound diff in the bikes. The 53 being heavier.
The motor weighed the same. Just a year older.

The 53 was much better riding quality and quicker feeling and better
steering. Felt easier to control under me. Both bikes had similar builds.
Drops. Rivish builds.
I wondered if it was possible that a frame too big for you cannot be
man-handled as easily and run as well as a size down?
Just a speculation.

2017-01-06 Thread John Bokman
I have not timed myself, nor do I plan to, but that's a good point. It's
not important to me how slow or fast I actually am, but how I FEEL when on
the bike. And for me, the Sam never FEELS springy when I'm climbing. I
suspect it's a function of the frame size more than the geometry or tubing.

I would totally agree about the Cadillac feel of the bike when on the flats
and downhill. That's exactly how I think of the Sam. I just wish it had a
little more juice when grinding up the pass. It rides like my Toyota Matrix
up the hills.

Objection, argumentative. Everybody who has followed Rivendell for any length
of time knows that the older designs had a bit of upslope that was almost
undetectable to the naked eye. For the purposes of my points in this

Thanks for playing.

2017-01-06 Thread Bill
Before tossing the baby out with the bathwater I'd suggest examining fit and
components. Consider stem height and extension along with handlebar choice,
width, and position. Also saddle height and fore/aft position as well as tire
choice and pressures. I also have a 60cm Sam and we are the same height. I
have had both noodles and moustache bars on it, and its an exceptional climber
with either. I suspect the real problem may be that that frame size is
slightly too large for you and that a 58 would be a better bet. If the real
issue is that you'd rather have something that feels livelier I'd suggest
starting with a 59cm Roadeo if you want to stay in the Riv family.

[RBW] Re: Hillborne 6-degree upsloping top tube

2017-01-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
Given your height of 6'0" and your weight of 155lbs, I tend to think that it's
a combination of things. If you aren't loading the bike down with gear, then
it's easy to consider a San overbuilt for you and for how you are using it.
It's a country bike. It says so right on the decals. If that's the case, a
flexier bike with thinner and/or skinnier top tube and down tube could feel
snappier.

My suggestions would include deciding if you want a country bike. If you do,
embrace that the Sam is a country bike. If you want a sprightly road bike
also, start targeting that. You mentioned the Atlantis, and it's a legendary
touring bike, but it's also not a sprightly road bike. A 150lb rider on a
stripped down Atlantis May similarly feel the bike is WAY overbuilt for the
load.

Where do you live? We could brainstorm the bikes you could try out.

Bill

[RBW] Re: Hillborne 6-degree upsloping top tube

2017-01-06 Thread Philip Kim
John, have you done a time test? Maybe borrow a bike that feels faster for
a couple of days. Ride up the same hill with both bikes, the hillborne
first, and then the "faster bike" next? Then reverse the order the next day
and compare times?

I have found riding on many Rivs, it's a very stable and Cadillac-type of
ride, which can be deceptively quick for such a useful bike.

My usual morning commute is mostly uphill in the morning. I found the Hunq
comparable in time with my lighter-tubed BDB Pelican. I ride the Pelican
mostly because it's more enjoyable to ride uphill, but it only gets me to
work faster by a minute or two.

So if the way the bike rides is something you can't get along with, then
you should get a bike with geometry for the type of ride you are looking
for. If you like your ride, it will only get you on the bike more. For this
same reason, get a bike with a level top tube. The Atlantis is a bit more
burly than the Hillborne, so the A Homer Hilsen or Roadeo might be
something to look into, or possibly the Roadini, but I doubt level top
tubes will be prominent on Riv-production bikes. There are too many sizes
to accommodate for.

Joe, "level" is not relative. You put a level on it and look at the
bubble, and when you do that with a Saluki you find that it has a
slightly upsloping top tube: 2.5 degrees for the 47cm size, 1.5 degrees
for the rest. It's documented, see for yourself:

Or, it could just be that in the days of level top tubes, smaller
diameter tubes were used to build bicycles, resulting in more flexible
frames than would be the case with oversize tubing of the same
thickness. And more flexible frames indeed can climb better.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hillborne 6-degree upsloping top tube

2017-01-06 Thread Garth
Chris, yes I do recall that also about the expanded geometry. For myself it
does not really change anything since stock frames are stock frames, they are
going to fit who they will and those who are "close enough" may or may not
actually be satisfied long term. Just like wearing clothes, maybe something
feels or looks great in the store or first trying it on but after awhile if it
was not really sized for you or what you really wanted, you wil eventualĺy
become aware of it and may say "what was I thinking ?" I notice too it is
very easy to get wooed by paint colors or other features on stock bikes, then
you try to make yourself fit into it some way despite it not reaĺly being what
you want or need ! Hah . done that ..
