[RBW] Re: threaded fork crown rod breakage on my Nitto 32F... punishment or a sign? Also, it can be salvaged, right?

2017-04-13 Thread Orc
I might be making things up as I go along, but some (all?) of the Nitto
front racks use an m6 bolt brazed onto the end of a steel tube for the fork
crown stay, so if there's any flexing it will stress the bolt<->bolt head
junction (which has already been weakened by brazing it to the tube.)
I've had one that failed like that pass through my hands, and there are
pictures on flickr of other racks that have died in the the same way.

You might be able to find someone locally who can braze a new bolt on for
you, and if not and you're willing to cover shipping send it to me and I'll
braze a new bolt or a flat mounting plate onto it for you.

To be contrary, I'd suggest narrower tires. My fat 650b tires are 38
Pari-Motos, which are perfectly happy at speed on loose gravel roads, but
so are the Confrérie des 650B tires I ride on my faster 650b machines (and
I have a pair of Schwalbe Ones @ 650x25b that are waiting for me to shuffle
wheelsets so I can get them fitted on a pair of rims that can support
80-90psi; I do not expect those will ride very fast on loose gravel, but
the target machine is for short brevets on mainly paved roads.)

Confréries fit very nicely under a 50mm fender and don't look obviously
undersized there (I ran them under some reradiused 700c V-O Zeppelins on a
couple of machines over the course of three years, only stopping when the
Zepps started to fracture at the rear brake bridge) and 38 Pari-Motos (or
CdlVs, or even the old PNW regional default of Hetres) look just right .

I'm about 6'1" and weigh between 170-190 pounds depending on how
obsessively I'm riding, so I'm not exactly a featherweight. The only
thing that might make it easier for me to ride (relatively) narrow tires is
that I shove my handlebars between 5-6 inches lower than my saddle so I
float myself between the bars and the saddle except when I'm falling over
with exhaustion; if you're going for a riv fit, your weight balance might
be back far enough so that what I consider ballon tires won't give you
enough float to compensate for the constant rumble of loose gravel or
crappy city streets.

[RBW] threaded fork crown rod breakage on my Nitto 32F... punishment or a sign? Also, it can be salvaged, right?

2017-04-13 Thread Patch T
Hey Bunch,

I posted not long ago asking advice on how best to secure a (still
un-proffered) rando bag to a mini front rack, specifically an integrated
decaleur model, which would potentially swap out the Nitto MIni Front (32F)
that came on my newish-to-me Quickbeam; a decision I was about to make
because after some (albeit not exhaustive) research I had come to the
understanding that an integrated rack/decaleur system was less shaky, less
noisy, less heavy, more stout, than purchasing a separate decaleur. I have
since been convinced otherwise, and my decision is not the story here.

A week later, having still pushed no buttons and charged no accounts on
this matter, I noticed my (absolutely adored) 32F was a little loosey, and
upon further examination ruled out the mid-fork mounting points and settled
on the fork crown nut to the integrated rack-bolt-rod-thing. I tightened
said nut with ample, yet not-crazy pressure, and it happily spun to the
right after the briefest moment of uninspired resistance. And it continued
to spin under my firmgentle suggestion until the thang fell to the floor,
with half the threaded rod intact. A result I would have expected (and have
certainly experienced) with less-notable parts n bits, but I was quite
surprised to have a Nitto fail me in this way.

Longish story shorterish, did my mini Nitto front rack take my
consideration of another rack as betrayal and decide to punish us both?

Or does this happen? Should I not be so surprised?

Lastly, what do I do next? For now I've secured the rack pretty decently
with a couple Irish straps [ the greatest thing Riv ever sold, besides the
QB ;) ]. There is still a bit of rack-attached rod sitting inside the fork
crown. Do I buy another set of struts for the rear eyelets on that rack and
mount them to the canti posts? The aesthetic of that solution bums me out
but, but it seems to me an affordable fix, and there certainly are worse
problems to have than not satiating my preference for two struts. I mean,
it would that make the rack stronger, no?

[RBW] Re: kindness

2017-04-13 Thread GAJett

One thing I value on this group is that people can disagree and still
remain friends. A large part of this is that opinions are backed up by
reasoned arguments while the authors remain open to challenge while others
can judge the merits for themselves.

As a group we value the "Rivendell experience", but are in no way blind
acolytes of Grant Peterson. Many of us recognize him as a significant
visionary in the bicycling world, but don't always agree with his
opinions. His guidance and life's work are valued, not as an end-all, but
as an important starting point for our own explorations.

I will say for myself, that his thoughts have led me to new avenues of what
bicycling can be and has significantly changed my bicycling life for the
better. My sincere thanks to Grant, and to all the members of this group.
We are all better for being participants here.
Cheers!

[RBW] Re: FS: Last Nigel Smythe tweed country bag

2017-04-13 Thread Christopher Murray
Grant just listed his definitely-not-new 1999 Atlantis frameset for $1100. I
think retail was $900-ish in 1999 but would need to go back and check to be
sure. It's a fair price in comparison to a new one but not in comparison to
what it cost when new. I didn't hear anyone cry foul. I've also seen similar
prices for older frames on this forum. There was a Glorious/ Wilbury new in the
box for $2300 not too long ago. Again, I didn't hear anyone cry foul.

A new larger bag from Rivendell is $200+, so I don't see why $200 is out of
line. And I definitely don't see why people are upset about it.

Cheers,
Chris

If profit is the motive that's fine. At least we know his markup is shockingly

the question why share the initial cost as it's sure to rub people the wrong
way, proving interpersonal isn't the strong suit.

Then there's the booze.

A forum I was on a long time ago was run by amsome militant straight edge kids

I responded because this is an opinion forum and I have an opinion on this
rancid bullcrap. And I reject the assertion that a lot of us have made a profit
on an old Rivendell. The general trend from new-to-older is the price drops a
bit to each successive owner, even with something like an early-2000s Atlantis.
You might get away with a profit sale on eBay, but most of us here know what an
old Atlantis went for new, and don't try to jack up the price as if we just
bought the new/improved frame.

I've lost a boatload of money on sales here because I would rather take the "I
used it for a while" hit, and let somebody else get a good deal on it. Because
karma and whatnot.

2017-04-13 Thread Christopher Murray
I am sure there a lot of people on this list who have made money selling an
Atlantis, Ram, Rom, Bleriot, Sam, or some other frame on this list. The prices
have gone up and up and the prices have been adjusted accordingly. I see
nothing wrong with asking more than you paid for something and I think I smell
hypocrisy with all the protest.

It does seem a bit strange to say what you paid and then ask for more. That
seems a sure fire way to upset the we-are-all-friends-here vibe of the list but
if you are not interested then why respond?!?!

Cheers,
Chris

Re: [RBW] Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Oh, I am all ready to talk about 1X, even though my 1X is really a 1X with
a granny for hypothetical but so far never experienced tough situations. I
mean the 42/28 X 14-15-16-17-18-19-20-22-24-28 on my Matthews custom dirt
road bike. This gives me a high of 86 gi, a low on the 42 of 43 gi, with a
range on the 28 of 50 gi down to 29 gi.

My terrain is either flat north-south, parallel to el rio grande, with sand
up to 3" deep (it gets deeper, but if it's deeper than 3", it's walking
time), or rolling-to-hilly terrain to the west and to the east, between
West Mesa and the Sandias, paved. The 1-tooth-gap cruising ratios from 75"
down to 60" are very sweet when one has to adjust for little changes in
incline and surface (though, to be ruthlessly honest, my finickiness in
this regard is mostly theoretical; when I ride, I use mostly the 70, 67, 63
inch gears on the level, depending on wind and sand, with, elsewhere, 75
for downhills and perhaps 60 or 54 for climbing.

I suppose that the greatest limitation is the low "high" gear, but I'm so
used to riding fixed that 86 gi seems like a great deal of extra gravy. And
I can climb our steepest hills with a 40 lb load on a bad day in a 29" gear.

I shift with Suntour bar end shifters, and the 10 cogs and the 2 rings use
about 50 to 60% of lever travel. They shift old 8-speed era derailleurs;
with modern Microshifts, say, shifting would be even more precise, but even
these archaic components shift very smoothly and precisely over 10, though
you need more care than with 9. (My cassette is made from miscellaneous 10,
9, 8, and even 7 speed cogs from my box, with Miche 10 speed spacers.)

Believe me, if you are used to the fixed-in-concrete ratios of a 8 speed
hub gear, you'll find 9, let alone 10 swappable cogs a real delight.

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-13 Thread Patrick Moore
The Sackvilles are hands, knees, and toes better than anything else out
there; almost too nice for a bike. I was lucky recently to score a well
used but still very decent Large one for $100 off the list, and that
included shipping, so I'm very happy. I had earlier owned a new Medium,
sold because I find panniers more useful, but the large is very much closer
to my Roller Packers in usefulness.

I hope Rivendell isn't planning to stop making the Sackvilles? That is what
"scramble" seems to indicate.

I also owned 2 Cartwrights, the Adam and the Hoss, and those were nice,
too, better than the best Carradices; but not nearly as nice as the
Sackvilles. And I've owned many, many Carradices. There's no question that
some, at least, of the later Carradices are far inferior in quality to the
best Nelson LFs and Camper LFs of the '90s.

All that said, I have a nostalgia for the Carradices of the 1990s, the old
black ones. Not nearly as good as the Sackvilles, but no corners cut,
either; rather like a RB-1 compared to a Masi. (Or something.) And what
about the first little saddlebags sold by Rivendell in the first years,
those with the ties instead of buckles? I somehow came across one a couple
of years ago. I think my brother has it now.

Re: [RBW] Do I need tire fatter than 650B x 42?

2017-04-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Ash: You should decide on your tire before deciding on your fender. Whether
a 650B tire fatter than 42 mm requires more effort to pedal depends on your
situation: sand? A 60 mm tire will float over sand far better than a skinny
42. Road? If a 650B X 50 mm tire is as supple and light as your 42, it will
probably pedal just as easily. I don't know what 42 you are using; if it is
one of the Compass extralights, then there is probably no fatter tire that
is as light and supple, and thus no fatter tire that will roll more easily
on firm surfaces.

But if you are riding on sandy soil or deepish gravel, I can tell you from
my experience with 700C X 50 mm tires and ditto 40-somethings that 50 is a
sort of sweet spot for sand and deep gravel; it floats almost as well as 60
mm but seems to float much better than 40-something, particularly because
you can very safely run a 700C X 50 tire at 20-25 psi if you don't weigh
much more than 170 and you are careful about hitting big rocks and curbs.
(I've run 50s as low as 18 and 60s as low as 12, tubes as well as tubeless,
with no problems; I'm 175.)

So, now you've chosen your tire. Next, choose your fender. Your fender
should be wider than your tire, but I've used 60 mm fenders over 60 mm
(actual 60 to 65 mm) tires and they have kept off the spray.

At the other extreme, I used 45 mm Honjos over 22 mm tires, and, while this
combo didn't look the best, it didn't look weird.

2017-04-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
I think I'd recommend the P55 fenders regardless. Well installed P55
fenders will not look bad at all with 42mm tires, or even 38s. 32s would
look weird but there is no reason you would ever run 32s on an Appaloosa.
Then if you decide to try wider (or knobbier) for whatever reason, you
can. I see zero benefit in putting P50s on a frame that could easily take
P55s.

[RBW] Do I need tire fatter than 650B x 42?

2017-04-13 Thread Ash A
Trying to make up my mind as to whether I should buy P50 fender or P55.

I like P50 much better in terms of fit and looks.

Seems like 650B x 42 is the widest tire I can go if I install P50, so I
bought a pair of Pari Moto 650b x 42.

Before I commit to P50 I wanted to ask the experts here if I should keep an
option open for wider tires and go with P55.

If wider than 42mm would mean much higher peddling effort, I'm unlikely to
ever go beyond 42.

Also, if anyone interested in selling a used 650B fat tire for cheap, I'll
buy it, rider around and compare it to Pari Moto 42 before ordering the
fender.

Btw, bike in question is 51cm Appa.

[RBW] Re: FS: Last Nigel Smythe tweed country bag

2017-04-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
While I agree with Nick on all points, everybody would have gotten through
their day just fine if they just didn't buy the OP's bag if they didn't
want it. Nothing productive comes from people posting WHY they aren't
going to buy the OP's tweed bag. If the OP's price is out of line for any
reason, his FS post will drift into oblivion on the list, with no harm
done.

2017-04-13 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I just put a pair of Torch's on my Karate Monkey this week and I'm
similarly impressed with them. I agree with your description of the tread.
My Big Apples are a smooth, continuous transition from sidewall to tread
but the Torch has a very defined tread section with a well defined border
between tread and sidewall. I actually prefer this because it gives the
bike a more "planted" feel. If Compass ever comes out with a similar width
700c tire, it will be hard not to purchase a set.

Thanks for posting your Appaloosa. Not only is it a beautiful bike but
I've been sitting here imagining a Hunqapillar with Bullmoose bar and Torch
tires. Now I know how good it would actually look!

Also, I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of a 52cm AHH? Can't seem
to find any on the internet, but I know there was a 52cm that sold here
recently.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
I ran my 650B A. Homer Hilsen for a while with a 1x9. 38T narrow wide ring
in front 11-32 cassette. It was plenty. I keep surprising myself how low
of a top gear I can live with. Jan is a much faster rider than me and
asserts he's never been dropped on a descent due to not having a high
enough top gear. His top gear is a 48x14 which is 94 inches. 38x11 on a
27.5 inch wheel is 95 inches. Good enough for Jan, good enough for anybody
who is not a lot faster than Jan, IMO.

I found 38x32 to be low enough for most unloaded on-road climbing. If the
bike was going to be ridden off-road or loaded I would have wanted lower.
I used a friction barcon shifter and a Shimano Deore XT short cage rear
der. RD M751-GS

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
Grant prompted me to get off my butt. I knew I needed (NEEDED, I SAY!) a
BLUE saddlesack medium. Despite the fact that I have one in Olive already
the reasons were myriad

1. It's blue
2. My kids are 13 and 15 and this is the Summer of Campouts, and both are
big enough to carry their own stuff
3. Riv has a vanishing number of matching blue fender flaps
4. My olive one has the 'good enough' but not 'best possible' leather
bottom. The Blue one has the best possible new bottom.
5. It's blue
6. I would handwring up a storm when the blue ones are sold out
7. It's good for the soul to put money in the register at Rivendell
Bicycle Works
8. The matching blue shopsacks are coming, and will all look splendid on
my new 650B Atlantis that's coming
9. It's blue

So on my way to work I rolled by RBW HQ, saw the cool blueys in person, and
bought a Saddlesack Medium and a matching pair of fender flaps.

[RBW] ISO/WTB/WTT - New-ish Large Olive Saddlesack

2017-04-13 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
Pretty narrow target to hit here but I'm on the lookout for a Large 2016
Saddlesack (with the non-leather bottom mounting) in the olive color. Just
got off the phone with Riv and they said there *should* be more on the way
at some point in the future but if someone has one they are unhappy with
for whatever reason, let's talk!

I use a large Swift Zeitgeist now, which is quite a bit smaller, but
willing to trade it if that's what you're into.

2017-04-13 Thread Philip Kim
forgot to mention I found the 40t up front with 11-40 sufficient in DC
area. morning part of my commute is a pretty long uphill climb heading into
Virginia, i think about a couple of miles, and the 40t cog on the cassette
is pretty decent.i don't carry much on my commute (change of clothes,
lunch).

also the Pelican has a 107mm or 108mm bottom bracket I believe.

[RBW] Re: Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-13 Thread Philip Kim
Chris,

I've done the 1x9 on the San Marcos:

1x9 IRD extra wide cassette (12-40)
Shimano 105 crank w/ 38t Wolftooth No-drop chain
Shimano 105 derailleur w/ Wolftooth "Road Link"
Shimano Ultegra bar end shifters in friction

Here's a pic :

I found the 1x9 gearing easy to shift, but the gaps were a bit too much.

So I went with a 1x10 on a Box Dog Pelican before giving it to my girlfriend

1x10 Sunrace Cassette (11-40)
Sugino crankset with Wolftoof 40t no drop chain on the "inside" of the
110bcd arms
Shimano SLX 10 spd rear derailleur
Gevenalle GX - Shifters, I got the short pull version

The Gevenalle shifters use the microshifters that are for 10 speed Shimano
MTB rear derailleurs. Index flawlessly, and have a larger throw so friction
is also easy (YMMV). Very no-fuss set up.

Here's a pic of the BDB Pelican (re-powdered pinkbecause thats what she
likes)

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-13 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Have to agree with the above two posts. For quite a while I had tried to
acquire one but it was like seeking out a 4 leaf clover and I tired of it
especially when there are other quality products out there. I understand
the whole cottage industry and all but at some point if you simply can't
buy one you kind of drift away from it.

I have a Camper (longflap) that I bought in the last two years - I
suppose it could have been NOS, that has the green canvas and honey
 leather
straps, and the straps are thick and robust. I've had two second-hand
Carradice bags over the past five years, one a Nelson, and one a Camper -
both were the black fabric with white leather straps IIRC, and the leather
on both was thin and appeared to scuff and stretch when pulled tight in
 the
buckles - I'd not have trusted them to last over years of regular usage. I
ended up selling those bags, not because of the straps, but they were a
 concern at the time.

[RBW] Road Bike with 1x10 or 1x11

2017-04-13 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Was wondering if anyone here has tried this kind of set up on one of Riv's
more roadish bikes? I have a Soma San Marcos with the typical 2 chain
rings and was kind of thinking of trying a 1X. I had a Surly Krampus with
a 1X. If you do have this set up what are your components and do you like
it? My area is flat to rolling hills mostly so I don't have to slay any
mountains. I have most of my other bikes set up (even the Riv's) with an
Alfine 8 so I don't think I would feel like I'm too limited with
enough gearing options. Its attractive to me as I tend to prefer simple
set ups in general - hence all the IGHs in the stable.

[RBW] kindness

2017-04-13 Thread Sky Coulter
There are a lot of bike geek forums and lists out there. In addition to its
focus on Rivendell Bicycle Works, what has made this group uniquely
appealing to me is the kindness and courtesy members extend to one another.
It isn't an exaggeration to say that it has increased my faith in the
basic decency of people. I mostly just sort of eavesdrop on conversations
between other members, but since my main bike geek friend who introduced me
to this list passed away, I've been slowly becoming a more active
participant. Strangers in this group, connected by technology and common
interest, have helped fill some of the void that my friend's passing left.
So I guess I'd just like to say thank you to everyone for the kind,
courteous and respectful interactions; it has really helped me feel
connected to a community.

Ugh
The idea that it's somehow more common in the real world to tell a person that
you paid less for an item than what you are charging them, when does that ever
happen?
Also, for me, the idea that someone new has to reimburse your past shipping
cost because you didn't like what you chose to buy, and then has to also pay
their own shipping the logic is just frustrating, man. Why does someone owe
you 20$ of beer whenever you buy something you don't want?

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB - Riv Fork; 26" wheel canti

2017-04-13 Thread iamkeith
The Tange ones I'm talking about are from the 90's, are canti brake
compatible, and look like this:

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/download/file.php?id=12350

They licensed the crown design from Bontrager who's forks were similar, but
usually had a black crown, beefier legs, and go for a lot more money in the
used market place. The Tange one is probably fine or even more
appropriate for your purpose, because the legs aren't as stiff. I actually
have a couple of the Bontrager ones sitting on my desk at the moment,
because I'm doing the steerer swap. If you find one and are interested, I
can walk you through the process and show you where to find the steerers.

Another thought I just had, that may be the best one yet - especially if
you can find a 26" riv fork or a too-short X0-1 fork - is to do a steerer
extension. That would surely cost less than a new custom. I think the
typical method is to use a inner dowel/sleeve to butt a new section on and
maintain alignment, and then braze or weld together. On a shorter fork,
the sleeve could cause problems with a quill stem, but yours is long enough
that it might work great.

I didn't realize until now that the XO-2/XO-4 crown was different than the
XO-1/Atlantis. The later takes a pretty wide tire. I can't imagine how
that decision made sense, but it sure illustrates the kind of corporate
bean counting that Grant must have had to deal with at the time.

[RBW] Re: FS: Last Nigel Smythe tweed country bag

2017-04-13 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Richard I guess you confused everyone as to your asking price. You said*
I'm asking 200 $ shipped. it cost me just shy of 160$ after tax and
shipping. *So this reads as $200 and not the under $160 (your cost)you
now say you intended to sell it for. You can understand the disconnect.
Good luck with your local sale!

Getting this to the top of the list. Ordered a Joe and would rather deck it out
than have two bikes, one of which will likely not get much use. Near new is an

Thanks Keith! Yeah that gray one was almost perfect, might have been
'close enough' as I have some margin at 24cm. I am keeping an eye on ebay,
not quite every day but I do have some searches going. Those switchblade
forks look like they are mostly disc forks... which would work but would
necessitate some wheel changes and different braking styles front to back
for sure! :)

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-13 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I've had a few Acorn bags over the years, and still have what was their
large saddebag in my inventory, though I think that particular design no
longer exists in their catalog. Though I haven't had a new Acorn bag in
several years, the bags I've had from them have been of high quality
materials and with good/smart design and assemblage. My recollection is
that they've been tricky to acquire, so I've looked elsewhere for recent
needs.

I tend to do this as well - if I'm offering something up to this, or the
iBob list, it's almost never for a profit, if so it's in the few dollars
range, and in many cases it's at a loss or as a "pay-it-forward"
transaction. When I have something that I know could turn a profit and help
fund further bike interests, I typically turn to other venues - these are
often items that I would tend to think wouldn't be of interest to the
audience of said lists anyhow. I've historically funded my bike hobby, to
the point where I fully funded brand-new complete bikes, by flipping bikes
on Craigslist - hipsters pay a tax there, for a cleaned up and stripped
down single speed or fixie conversion, and I keep the parts I stripped off
for future builds or for recycling to this community. There are few
transaction I make to bring new items in that haven't been self-funded this
way, and I think it's nice to pass on the extra bits that I might have to
other enthusiasts here in this community for a fair price and with a clear
conscience. I suppose I may have been taken advantage of on some occasions,
but if so, I haven't felt it in any way.

2017-04-13 Thread Minh
Interesting response from folks, if Richard had not listed his original
price (which i don't think he needed to do) would the reactions be the
same? We're talking about an item that is not made anymore--and has not
been made for quite a long time. The question shouldn't be if it's icky
that richard is making a few bucks off this, but whether you think a NOS NS
Tweed Country Bag is worth $200 shipped.

As many of you do, i use the list to sell parts that i bought and didn't
use or bought on impulse. More often than not i take a small loss on it,
but every now and then i do make a few bucks because i bought low or found
something on closeout. I price items at the going rate (or what i think it
is), if its too high i lower it, too low and it sells quickly. Isn't that
how its supposed to work? Am i really 'taking advantage' of someone on the
list if i get more than what i paid for it?

Maybe i should start throwing away the receipts for all my purchases so i
don't remember what i paid for things i resell.

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-13 Thread Grant Petersen
At some point in the distant but forseeable future there will be a scramble
for sackville bags, and it will be lead by those who already have a bag
made with the highest quality materials and a flat-floored pouch that
doesn't tilt the load, and has a stiff lower lip and a flap-tongue that
contains the stuff inside so securely that the straps are almost
superfluous. "distant" is underterminable, but is not a ploy, and
"forseeable" is in sharper focus. Debate and wait all you like--the bags
are expensive, no doubt, but in 22 years of business, I've run into only
four vendor-suppliers (out of a thousand?) whose quality standards were
higher than our own, that never needed "guidance" or ramping up, and
Waterbury Leather Works--who makes those bags for us in Connecticutt—is one
of them.

What a stupid attempt at selling something. easily the dumbest thread I
have seen in 2017 on this list.

[RBW] FS: Last Nigel Smythe tweed country bag

2017-04-13 Thread Garth
I am not interested in the bag, so any set price is of no concern to me.

If I was interested in the bag, I would offer you what I was willing to pay for
it, so I can find no fault in your asking price since I would pay no more than
that regardless. It is not the sellers job to make me feel good about buying
something.

I have a Camper (longflap) that I bought in the last two years - I suppose
it could have been NOS, that has the green canvas and honey leather straps,
and the straps are thick and robust. I've had two second-hand Carradice
bags over the past five years, one a Nelson, and one a Camper - both were
the black fabric with white leather straps IIRC, and the leather on both
was thin and appeared to scuff and stretch when pulled tight in the buckles
- I'd not have trusted them to last over years of regular usage. I ended up
selling those bags, not because of the straps, but they were a concern at
the time.

Re: [RBW] FS: Last Nigel Smythe tweed country bag

2017-04-13 Thread Bob K.
Richard,

While I appreciate your transparency with pricing, I disagree with your logic.
You are also more than free to price your item for what you think it's worth.

And yes, we've most certainly all bought something on a whim and then decided
it wasn't for us. I did this last week, and now I have a $40 derailleur that
I'm not going to use for my a build, and I'll be lucky to get 50% of what I
paid for it back. So it goes.

But in the end, your bag is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. You were
willing to pay $160 for it. Someone may go $200.

Shipping should be under $14.00, so anything above that up to the $200 is
profit. He wants extra cash for...I don't have a clue. This is a strange
request, in my opinion.

Re: [RBW] FS: Last Nigel Smythe tweed country bag

2017-04-13 Thread Reed Kennedy
Hey Richard,

If you aren't looking to make money on it then why not offer to sell it for
what you paid plus the actual cost of shipping?

I see you saying you aren't looking to profit, and then I see you selling
something for more than you paid. It's confusing.
