[RBW] Re: Compass tires for Sam

2017-04-17 Thread John McClusky
I love my Barlow Pass Extralights. The Bon Jon Pass tires came out right
after I bought them and I was disappointed that I missed the opportunity
for thinner and lighter (last road tires I had bought were 23mm on a
Bianchi). Now that I've adjusted to my "fast road tires" being 38mm wide,
I really appreciate having the extra cushion. I don't think I'd notice a
ride difference in the weight.

Re: [RBW] FS: Green Clem Smith Jr H 59CM - stock build with SKS fenders - $800 plus shipping - moving sale

2017-04-17 Thread iamkeith
Funny - just got back from a nice visit to that area myself - or St. Pete, more
accurately. Interestingly, the entire time i was there, i was desperately
wishing i had my 59 clem. Would have loved to have cruised the Pinellas
Parkway for a few hours, then tried out some of the abundant-but-not-hilly
single track, then cruised along the beaches at sunset. With its somewhat
upright riding position for contending with traffic, and huge, floaty tires for
sandy areas, i would think it an ideal bike for the area - similar to all the
comfort bikes and beach cruisers that the locals all seemed to ride, but but
better performing than either.

Re: [RBW] Rivet saddle fit?

The metal frame of the Rivet kind of curls in at the ends. Look at the
underside to see what I mean. Those curls hit my sit bones in exactly the
wrong way. I instantly knew that the Rivet wasn't for me when I sat on it.
Steel doesn't break in, and I was sitting right on those curls. It made
me immensely grateful for the demo program. I like Deb Banks a ton, and I
wear wool bike socks with the Rivet logo, but I can't run the saddles.

[RBW] Re: WTB - Riv Fork; 26" wheel canti

2017-04-17 Thread R. Alexis
Another option in line with what has already been mentioned, Find a
suspension fork crown that works for you and allows legs to be bolted to it
and have a builder make a legs that will fit it. It does not have to be the
Bontrager/Rock Shox one. It can be a later Rock Shox one with just the bolt
on fork legs, as long as the steerer is the size that works. RST used to
offer separate fork crown for their fork shox. Other than that later Rock
Shox and Manitou forks that bolted to the legs will work.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

- It took a while for the Rivet to feel as good as a B17—longer than it takes
for a new B17. The saddle eventually became very comfy, but the break-in period
was definitely longer.

I haven't ridden the divide, but you can put up to 2.3 tires on an
Atlantis and go tubeless. I have Cliffhanger rims and Thunder Burt tires,
all tubeless compatible. I do know an early version of a Hunqapillar had no
problems on the Divide.

[RBW] Rivet saddle fit?

2017-04-17 Thread Conway Bennett
So I picked up a bike locally for friend (no money has changed hands so it's
still mine) and it had a rivet saddle on it. I was upfront with the seller
that it was desirable but he said he didn't feel like taking it off. I got
excited so I put it on my Sam but maybe it's not for me. From what I've
measured it's a diablo. I probably could ride this model or independence since
there's some overlap in sizing but can't find the sweet spot on it.

Any advice for setup? Anything different from b17?

Beautiful bike Roberta. The magenta tape and cork grips look great. I'll
also mention the Brooks B67. I've started using one recently. I find it to
be comfortable although new. It works well the raised bars and upright
position I have on the bike. Comfort is always good.

[RBW] Re: WTB - Riv Fork; 26" wheel canti

2017-04-17 Thread R. Alexis
Sorry, lost the text and hit send too soon.

The Bob Brown Cycles fork crown can be built both for 1" and 11/8" via shim
per his description here, http://bobbrowncycles.com/sale.htm , and has good
clearance.

I don't know if Handsome Cycles or Rawlands still has any forks. My guess
is that Handsome may have some, but that Rawlands probably does not since
they have moved and has not produced the Sogn in a while.

Another possibly viable option is to check with Rivendell to see what forks
they have available that they are willing to sell you.

Hope this helps.

I recall someone on the RBW or iBOB list posting about getting a

one that was used on the XOXO. One of the issues was there is a reverse
peak or point that projected down in the middle of the fork crown toward

Another option is that Bob Brown Cycles sells his version of the biplane

concern was the axle to crown distance, but I never looked and compared
what the distance was between what the early suspension corrected length
should be on a fork for the Waterford frame and what the 27.5"/650B crown
length of the Rawlands CSogn would be. I think the length would be pretty

[RBW] Re: New bike--Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-17 Thread Valerie Yates
Roberta -- Your bike is gorgeous. Great choice. Love the bar tape.

Following up on Bob's comments, I have and love my Joe and I have and love
the B17 saddle on my drop bar bikes, but they did not work well together
for me because the saddle is too narrow (for me) for the upright riding
position I have on the Joe. Like Bob suggests, I have a wider Brooks with
springs (B67) on my Joe and I love it. For me, the correct Brooks saddle
is comfortable right away without a breaking in period. It just gets even
better over time.

[RBW] Re: New bike--Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-17 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Roberta,

I will throw in a few random comments...

First, a new Brooks leather saddle can be a far different beast than a
beautiful, comfortable, broken in Brooks leather saddle. That takes time
and miles, also the patience and sometimes the tolerance (pain and
otherwise) of a saint. I would also ask if your sitting position on the
Appaloosa is different (more upright?) than on your other bike? That could
certainly make a difference.

Which brings me to the last random comment and that is a bike set-up for
upright seating usually is helped by a slightly wider/supportive seat and
possibly even a very cool Brooks saddle with springs! I know there are
probably anti-springs people, so I say that cautiously :>) , but I will say
a comfortable saddle, comfortable to and for and with *you*, is one of the
most important aspects of a bike. If it keeps hurting you, I would talk
with the bike shop folks about a possible trade, though it could be fine
with some adjustment in tilt, saddle height, etc.

Hope it helps... I think I may just go for a ride myself!

Enjoy the new bike!!

Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2017-04-17 Thread Mark Reimer
Possible? Yes. Enjoyable? Debatable...

I recently did the first 1000km of the Divide. I decided to leave my
Atlantis at home and ride a Crust DFL with 26" by 3" tubeless tires. It was
the perfect decision. There was an Atlantis in my group, and he had many,
many flats. Some of the descents are more akin to creek beds due to
erosion. I could let go of the brakes and fly down. He double flatted. Some
of the descents are steep and very long. I was extremely thankful for my
large disc brakes. I never had trouble stopping my loaded bike even in the
rain. My Atlantis would have been a bad call in my opinion.

Now, there are many long sections of the divide where a Homer would be
absolutely in its element. I guess you need to decide if you want a bike
that sings on the gravel roads but you're walking some of the most 'fun'
sections. Or a bike that doesn't bat an eye at the rough stuff, but might
be a touch slower on the road. I never felt I was at a disadvantage on the
road sections. I increased my tire pressure and kept up just fine. But the
guys on 2" tires and under were at a definite disadvantage.

So yeah, you can do it, and many people have, but your bike and body will
take a much bigger beating.

[RBW] Re: New bike--Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-17 Thread Ryan Fleming
Yes usually with me it is sore sit bones. This year some lower back
soreness , which luckily is easing with each ride, so I'm grateful for
thatthink it may have had something to do with crushed L1 vertebra late
last Sept. Until a couple of weeks ago, I was walking (which I do in
winter) and not riding. I don't remember lower back pain so much in prior
springs unless it's a longer day in the saddle than usual , then my back
might complain a bit

In your case , Roberta it could be a fit issue , not necessarily a fitness
issue :)

Anyway, nice bike and I like the magenta or fuschia or whatever ya call it
bar tape

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-17 Thread Shawn Granton
Hey Eric-

I had the small version of their saddlebag for a few years. It was fine.
You are correct in thinking the quality isn't going to be as nice as the
other options. I found that the leather wasn't as good, and since the
canvas isn't as thick or stiff as others, the bag can sag. If you already
own a Minnehaha and know what to expect, the bag should serve you well.

Before you decide, you should first do a check of that internet auction
site to see if there are any Carradice bags for around that price.
Sometimes you can luck out!

yours,
Shawn

Chris, yes, this was the one on their floor and it was already built up
with the saddle and grips. I live in downtown Philadelphia, about halfway

I'll be taking it back to be adjusted and the accessorized in 2-4 weeks.

Re: [RBW] just waiting on my white Bluemels

Eric, the Phil standard "fixie" hubs are 8mm bolts with shouldered washers.
Mine have 3 washers without shoulders, and a custom shouldered washer to
fit under the derailleur hanger.
I used a '76 Raleigh derailleur hanger, cut the formed axle slot nubs in
half with a dremel, and filed the derailleur hanger shouldered washer down
to 8mm. Here's the Phil spec on my custom hubset.

I am probably misunderstanding, and definitely let me know if this all
sounds wrong, but the fork crown "mount" or hole (front to back of the fork
crown) on an Appaloosa is not threaded as far as I can tell and is
relatively quite large- an M6 fits. The depth of the fork crown mount, not
taking into account any recesses at the mount point, is 33mm, so maybe
40-42mm? I would think it would be just a nut and bolt situation, with
correct washers (as needed) to protect things.

Apologies if I am way off on this one... My eyes and hands know a lot more

It's lovely! I really, truly love the magenta tale, it makes your Appaloosa one

the best part of the bike is the bags.

Great looking bike! And I like the way you chose... the most and biggest

Re: [RBW] just waiting on my white Bluemels

2017-04-17 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Patrick, nothing custom about the BB spindle. It's a Phil BB, Raleigh
"Super Course" cups.

The spindle is 125mm with 5mm offset - could have used 123mm with 10mm
offset, but OOS until Phil can make another run.
The fun thing about building this was also the frustration - it took 7
weeks from inception to get my hubs in hand. So I did all the math up
front and had the bike completely built.

When I received my finished wheels Saturday morning, everything was already
dialed in. I adjusted inner travel on FD - RD didn't need anything - minor
brake adjustments, and most importantly, the chain guard provided perfect
clearance at max needed FD travel.

That is very nice! I'd love to build something like that up around my (too
much announced) AM hub, which has a 114 or 115 OL axle.

Why custom bb spindle? What length?

[RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-04-17 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
Au contrare, Riv has these B65 fenders (albeit not as long as some other
models), built up on an Appaloosa in the product photo:

https://www.rivbike.com/collections/fenders/products/sks-esge-commuter-ii-silver-fenders-b65-700c-29er

Riv's description lists these as up to 55mm tires, which means they would
likely work with the Torches.

and unpaved roads in my area are fine with these, but some newly laid
gravel can need a wider tire.

I have Compass 700x44 and they are very light tires. For touring they’d
be all right because even if I get a flat every couple of days it doesn’t
matter, since I stop to rest anyway. But they are hardly bigger than the
Compass 700x38, they measure about 40-42 mm on my rims. For combined
touring and commuting I want something a bit sturdier than the Compass and
a bit lighter construction than the Marathon Supreme, at least 45 mm wide.

I want to make good use of the clearance on the Atlantis.

One BIG RULE!!! for cutting cable housing. Measure it carefully! Measure it
again! And again! And again! *Then* cut!

If I had $5 for every time over the almost-50-years I've been building
bikes that I've cut the housing too short, I'd be writing this from
Martinique with obsequious servants and lovely damsels hovering around to
please me.

I *still* cut it too short! And lucked out most recently with the expensive
Yokozuna housing for the Matthews's disc brakes -- the front ended up
*just* long enough. Sheesh!

2017-04-17 Thread DarinM
I tried to post info last week but it didn't go through, I'm interested in
looking into this project.

The Pacenti crown appears to be available again: here.

Here

 is
the relevant thread from the Jeff Lyon/Stag project.

I would expect a lower price could be arranged by not using such premium
pieces as the GD crown and Toei blades.

I imagine most of these would be purchased for older MTB's, were
axle-to-crown and offsets consistent enough to build something that would
satisfy enough people?

I have their canvas panniers, and I'm pretty happy with them. Going on a

[RBW] Re: Compass tires for Sam

2017-04-17 Thread RichS
My Sam runs 650b, Loup Loup Pass, 38 on the front and a Soma B Line 38 on
the rear. I ride on similar surfaces. Quite happy with the setup.

Short answer, yes. I created a bottom for my compartment using a small sheet
of corrugated plastic from the hardware store to help prevent sag.

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa build - beta version

2017-04-17 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Andrew,

I cannot speak to the 55, but on a 58, I measure ~85cm just in front of the
saddle, ~86.5-87cm mid-tube, ~89cm at or near the head tube. That is with
Schwalbe Mondial tires, marked 700x47 and sometimes sold as 700x45. I
measure actual tire height (for these) at just a little over 45mm.

Hopefully that is right and also hopefully people can provide measures for
the other sizes.

Bob

[RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-04-17 Thread William R.
Spot on Stuart. Great photos too, really nice Joe! Read about the Torches here
and checked out Maxxis' specs. They sounded so good I ordered a pair from
Germany. While I waited for them to arrive, I took the Almotions off (don't
think I can ever like them) and replaced them with my Lite Skin Thunder Burts.
The Thunder Burts are so good. The only place I feel they are lacking a little
is on pavement. And most of my rides involve at least 50% pavement. That has
kept my eyes open for a better all rounder. Enter the Torches. Comparing them
side by side before mounting the casings seem almost identical. And right away
I noticed abrupt start and uniform thickness of the tread from edge to edge. I
guess that is where the extra 200 grams per tire is. Still, these are a good
200 grams per tire less than the Almotions too. I like the Torches a lot. I
think the only area they are lacking a. It against the T-Burts is weight. I
have been riding them daily for a week now. They are fast and corner better
than any tire in this size range that I have tried. I guess they perform like a
good bmx tire should. I plan to keep these on as my favorite all round tire. If
I do an all or mostly dirt ride I will put the Thunder Burts on. Though I am
guessing the Torches will perform well in the dirt too.

[RBW] just waiting on my white Bluemels

2017-04-17 Thread Ron Mc
on their way from France.
Will be taking the first distance ride on my old-bike project today (it
already has a bigger Brooks bag with room for the tools).

Bought a '57 Lenton Grand Prix bare frame and original fork on CR. What
makes this frame tricky to build, aside from the Raleigh threads, is the
Sturmey-Archer spec. droputs:
115mm OLD, 8mm axle slots.
Also learned the single shifter boss was all English - though it looked
like a Simplex/Huret boss, it will only fit Cyclo.

I have a set of Zeus dropouts, but I'm proud to have built this bike
without altering the frame.
What's really cool about the 1957 frame, is that it was gun-metal blued
beneath the paint, making it rust-proof, but also, the bluing and silver
paint diffused together, giving the paint a platinum-gray patina.

I knew I could build a better bike than take to hunt down and buy back the
original parts. Used many parts that I already had here, sourced a few,
and engineered the hubset with the help of Michael R. at Phil Wood.
The only correct parts on this bike are the saddle, stem, and right-side
shifter.

Yellow Jersey had the NOS 26tpi Whitworth headset.
Phil BB, custom Phil hubs, 8mm axles, 115mm OLD. Had to use Synergy O/C
rim to get the hubs approved by Phil Engr.
Cyclotouriste triple, half-steps plus granny, wide 5sp IRC freewheel.
Raleigh-branded VGT RD, Cyclone FD.
Already had around a Simplex chainguard that I tinkered to fit with the
Cyclone FD, using and slightly altering the Simplex hardware.
GB Hiduminium stem, Maes bars, NOS Weinmann 730 side pulls.

2017-04-17 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Stuart,

Not only does your bike look perfect but you take much better pictures than
I! Your saddlebag looks great on it, ready for errands or adventure. I
actaully lived in Austin way, way, back when, before tech moved there along
with other jobs. When I was there, you either worked for the State or for
UT. I can remember riding my bike on a Sunday shortly after I got there,
just riding and riding, then thinking I had "discovered" Lake Travis... In
a way, I suppose I had! Of course, racing back to tell people of my
"discovery" was a little anticlimactic, but hey...

Enjoy the weather and rides - and congrats on the new bike!
