[RBW] Re: Transporting a fendered tandem

2017-04-19 Thread Nick Payne

This is what we used for many years until we sold this car. I made the
carrier using about $20 of timber. It's a piece of dressed 100mmx30mm long
enough for the wheels to sit on, with pieces of 30x30 screwed on each side
at each end to form slots for the wheels to sit in. A couple of galvanized
u-bolts hold it onto the roofrack cross members. We would lift the bike on
and then the stoker would stand on the rear bumper and hold it upright
while I lashed it down to each side from ropes that went around the
handlebar stem. Additional ropes went fore and aft from the bottom brackets
to prevent the bike moving forwards and backwards. With a bit of practice I
could get it on by myself without needing any assistance.

It only took a couple of minutes to get the tandem on or off the rack, and
we have driven right across Australia (5000km) and many shorter trips at
highway speed with the bike up there. I've looked at the tandem topper rack
on a friend's vehicle and thought that our setup was much more stable than
theirs.

Re: [RBW] (maybe) WTB Brooks B68 - Question regarding brooks saddle for Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-19 Thread Joe Bernard
One of you probably has my B68. The "wooden church pew" effect Leah mentioned
didn't work for me at all. It's very wide, with an almost vertical face that
drops down behind your thighs, and for me created a similar effect to legs
rubbing against a packed Carradice saddlebag. I kept sliding forward to get
away from the wooden bench behind me, and was not a happy rider. Me no likey!

[RBW] Re: Phil BB advice/experience needed

2017-04-19 Thread Jon Spangler
Bob,

I have been using Phil Wood BBs since 1975, when I was 23. I am now 65 and
have sent several to Phil Wood to have spindle lengths changed out.
(I am fairly certain the retail cost for this is higher than Patrick quoted
but it includes new bearings.)

I have yet to wear out a Phil Wood hub or BB and have yet to be
disappointed in any Phil Wood gear I have purchased:
they will last longer than I will!

I would recommend sending your 130mm symmetrical BB back to Phil and having
them install the offset 127.5 or 130,
with preference going towards whatever Phil recommends.

I just installed the Thule in the roof rails in my Toyota Highlander so I'm

I will measure the distance from the fork dropout holder to the roof of the

compared to a standard rack.

[RBW] (maybe) WTB Brooks B68 - Question regarding brooks saddle for Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-19 Thread LeahFoy
I have the B68 on my Bets and I LOVE it. My husband has the B67 on his Clem and
I like it far less. His seems softer, somehow, and maybe saggy? The springs
aren't fun to work around if you plan to use a Saddlesack. I like the harder
B68; it's like sitting on a wooden church pew. They're offered for sale
occasionally, and you may find one if you nose around a bit. Or you could check
out Rivet since it seems highly recommended.

[RBW] (maybe) WTB Brooks B68 - Question regarding brooks saddle for Joe Appaloosa

2017-04-19 Thread Joe Bernard
Are you sure about the B17? I have them on my Appaloosa and ebike, both of
which are upright-ish rides, and they're great. Both bikes got B17s I'd
already broken in; if you're running a new one on your new bike, you might want
to give the fit a few weeks to work out for you.

2017-04-19 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I bought several b68 saddles for the exact reason you mentioned. I liked the
size and shape for upright riding and didn't need the springs. I do own the
B67 too but often the springs on these types of saddles squeak which I don't
care for. Some lube often helps with that. Overall I favor the B68. I bought
several of them from a list member here a while back

You may want to look into Rivet's new wider saddles. I can't help with the
springs question as I've never ridden springs. Supple tires, knees and

[RBW] Re: Best way to move bikes cross-country?

2017-04-19 Thread 'thalasin' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks to everyone for your responses! I'm not especially handy in terms
of boxing them myself, plus it's getting to be crunch time and I just don't
have time to mess around with the learning curve. I'm going to have them
boxed by a mobile bike service so they will be ready to go into the moving
van, pod, trailer or whatever moving apparatus presents itself. I was
mostly worried about not having them secured and them clanking around and
getting damaged in transit. Not that they can't be damaged in boxes, but
at least I'll know I took pre-emptive measures.

Moving to Michigan which means a fat bike may be joining the fleet. But I
have a glorious summer of lakefront rides ahead of me before the snow flies.

great fit for the more upright position. I am considering the B67 but
really don't need the springs. The B68 seems like it would be a great
choice but it is discontinued. Any advice or thoughts on saddles? Do the

[RBW] Re: 3M helicopter tape

2017-04-19 Thread Hugh Smitham
This has been on my short list of need to buy. So where's the best source
to buy a roll? Or is it way too expensive to buy as a roll? There seem to
be a few eBay sellers but I noticed they're selling strips not rolls. As
other's have mentioned there other manufacturer's. I myself consider 3m to
be of the highest quality. Also what width have you all found to be the
most useful?

Re: [RBW] Re: 3M helicopter tape

2017-04-19 Thread George Schick
Could be some serious illness or life event. But it could also be another
thing: This tape is very expensive. An entire rolls sells for several
hundred dollars. Sometimes a "casual" retailer who advertises a product
like this (i.e., small increments), but happens to be out of an entire roll
at the moment will attempt to wait for a "critical mass" of orders before
he buys another. I guess I can't blame them for doing that; even major
retailers who sell discounted products will often do the same thing - hence
the wonderful term "back ordered." My only complaint would be not telling
that to potential buyers right up front. I wouldn't mind waiting. After
all, I've done without it for all these years - I just like to know the
score right up front.

Joe, good luck with the sale! Appa's seem to be moving well so I hope a
buyer snaps it up soon.

Any ride is a good ride, even if it does require a bit of an assist.

Take care,

Re: [RBW] Re: 3M helicopter tape

2017-04-19 Thread Reed Kennedy
George,

I just had an identical experience with the same seller, trying to buy the
same item. I eventually made a claim through eBay and my money was refunded
today with no explanation. You can see my negative feedback here:
http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2=holo_haleakala&&_trksid=p2047675.l2560=nc=182237433934=VIP%3Afeedback=FeedbackAsSeller

Felt terrible leaving it, as they had a perfect record until now. All I
wanted was a quick note saying they'd run out and when to expect it. Or
even just a "sorry"! Sheesh, what a waste of time.

What's doubly sad, I can't find anywhere else on eBay to buy helicopter
tape in 1" widths without expensive international shipping. ::grumble::

Unfortunately, when you deal with people via eBay you never know what to
expect. I recently placed an order back on April 8th for a couple of feet
of 1" tape at the URL posted in the message below, received an e-mail
saying the order had been placed, received another e-mail saying it had
shipped w/ an expected delivery date of April 15th and nothing has
happened. Meanwhile, I placed another eBay order for a completely
unrelated product, went through the same e-mail notification cycle, and it
arrived on time, just as expected.

When I use the USPS tracking number supplied by the seller it says
something about a shipping label having been created and awaiting receipt
of the product. USPS tracking is notoriously unreliable so I'm suspicious
of the accuracy of their message, so I tried to contact the seller from his
eBay main page advertisement, clicking on the "contact" and it takes me to
an error message. Therefore, I don't even have a way to get a hold of this

John,

There was a posting on the blug about a year ago of a black Sam they outfitted
with 42mm Rock 'n Roads and fenders. Mark or Brian had to actually cut the
fenders in to parts and attch part of it to the front rack to clear the brake
bridges. Seemed challenging to me. I am able to easily get 40mm Mondials
under fenders, though.

Richard,

After seeing your Sam I have to say, "right back at you". Love the way you
decked out the sage Sam.

Carla,

The fenders are the SKS fenders Riv sells (p50s maybe?). They look more silver
because I ran a strip of the 3M reflective tape up the back of each fender.
You just have to use a large hole punch to cut out where the rivets are
located. Visibity is great with that stuff.

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-19 Thread Grant Petersen
I should be clear about the future of Sackvilles as I see it/predict it.

There's nothing on my visible horizon, but the two principles there are
aging and there may be another reason that I don't want to say -- that
leads to a retirement of both, and there is no middle-management eager or
able to take over the business. It's not a humming factory, it's small and
efficient, but the standards required slow things down, and it takes us up
to 2 months to get an order.

If I hear news of the end of Sackvilles, I'll pass it on, and shame on me,
but prices will skyrocket at that time. Right now and since the start,
we've felt compelled to be price-competitive, but that all will fly out the
door eventually. I know how "bad" this candor may sound, but it is the
reality and all I'm doing is saying it.

[RBW] Re: Best way to move bikes cross-country?

2017-04-19 Thread Surlyprof
If you want to box them up yourself, most independent bike shops usually have
bike boxes that they are happy to get rid of (REI breaks them down too
quickly). If you stop by on the days they unboxed new shipments, they're
usually happy to give them to you. We used bike boxes to sheet mulch our lawn
so it took a couple of weeks of stopping by a couple of shops to get enough
boxes.

Good luck with the move.

[RBW] Re: Best way to move bikes cross-country?

2017-04-19 Thread Shawn Granton
Tracy, where are you moving to? I think you are in Denver now. If it's to
another city with Amtrak service that has baggage service, you can ship the
bike via Amtrak Express. I think the rates are typically $50-75 plus the
box which costs $15. The big benefit to using their box is that it's the
same super duper size box used if you went on the train. It's a lot larger
than the standard bike box you'd get from a shop. All you need to do to
pack is 1) remove pedals and 2) turn handlebars. You will need to deliver
the bike to a station and pick up from a station, though.

[RBW] Re: threaded fork crown rod breakage on my Nitto 32F... punishment or a sign? Also, it can be salvaged, right?

2017-04-19 Thread Jeremy Till
I'm still a little bit confused. The traditional method of attaching this
rack is with the threaded rod extending all of the way through the fork
crown to be secured with a traditional nyloc nut on the back of the crown,
as is visible here

 on
a picture of Mark's QB from the riv staff bike page.

Your description that "the nut fits perfectly inside the recessed part of
the mount and lays flat against the crown," along with the fact that there
is a spacer on the front of the crown make me think your rack was installed
with a recessed caliper brake nut like these
(or perhaps shorter if came off a
rear brake), with the threaded rod somehow trimmed or spaced out such that
it terminates inside the fork crown.

Is that the case?

Good news. If/when you do decide to bolt to the mark's rack, a couple of easy
ideas for thicker spacers that you might already have, are: 1) inner chainring
spacer with a short piece of rubber tubing inside, to reduce diameter; and 2)
knurled nuts from presta valves, stacked as needed.

The only Surly forks designed for 650b have disc mounts and 1 1/8"

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa build - beta version

2017-04-19 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Roberta... and thanks!

I will say that the B17 and C17 do feel different, but both can work great.
The C17, for me, has a better chance of working well and not hurting me
right out of the box. The B17's can take some time to get to that point,
The other side of that is the C17 will most likely always be the same,
where the B17 should improve over time and miles. There are also leather
treatments (Proofide, Obenauf's, etc.) that can help the improvement
process along.

The other thing I do like about the Cambium's versus the leather saddles is
that the Cambium's are not hurt by wet weather or certainly not hurt the
way a leather saddle can be. Wet does not necessarily hurt the leather but
riding it when it is wet can. That's where saddle covers or even plastic
bags come in handy but I was forever forgetting to have one with me. The
recommended leather treatments help with all of that but I would still use
a cover or whatever if needed.

Not that I am still in the market, but I have wanted to try one of the
C19's (wider than the C17 but same construction) for more upright bikes but
I have not had one .

Also, I really like the Tigr lock! It is light, fairly strong, easy to
carry. I don't trust any lock to keep a bike safe for long, unattended
periods, but the Tigr lock is so light I always have it with me, either in
its clip or in my bag or pack. I bought a pair when they had their
Kickstarter and if I am being especially careful I can use the two to lock
both the frame and the front wheel separately, Even with the two locks,
they are much lighter than one big heavy lock.

Hope that helps and thanks for the good wishes!

Bob

[RBW] Re: 3M helicopter tape

2017-04-19 Thread jeffrey kane
I tried it for the front derailleur clamp once -- didn't work for me. The
cable pulling action caused the clamp to slip - whether that was on the
clamp / tape interface or the adhesive / frame interface (or both) I'm not
totally sure but either way, it was a no go. I'd never considered cloth HB
tape idea for that, though (but I'd probably not like looking at it).

The 3M Heli tape is great stuff for bikes -- I cut little pieces to wrap
around my bottom bracket shells to keep the occasional chain drop form
scratching them -- and I double it in patches around where maybe chain suck
will happen. I use it as a chain slap protector, etc ...

[RBW] Re: #%*#! Fenders!!!!

2017-04-19 Thread Broccoli Cog
Success! I thought I would provide and update here to let everyone know how
I made out. After 3 sessions in my workshop (aka my basement) I was able
to finally get everything aligned to my satisfaction. What it took was an
abundance of patience and determination. I explored the possibility of
permanent alignment of the fender nose by bolting it to the Mark's rack. I
can see how this would work but I treated it as a last resort. There is
about 3cm of space between the rack and the top of the fender so I would
need a significant spacer. I had a nylon sleeve that just wasn't quite long
enough. So I then tried mounting them to the rear of the fork crown with
the Sheldon Nut. I didn't like that at all. I found that when mounted to
the rear of the fork raising the fender up high enough forced the nose down
so that it was touching the tire. I decided to scrap that and go back to
mounting it behind the brake again. When I put it back on this time
starting from scratch I finally got it aligned just right. When I had it
just right it took the curve out of the nose of the fender. It's not
perfect but good enough. No tire rub whatsoever. The takeaway for me is
that you have to keep playing with the adjustment of the fender stays to
get it just right. It took a lot of trial and error but I now feel like I
am much better equipped to deal with. I just hope it's not any time soon!

[RBW] Re: #%*#! Fenders!!!!

2017-04-19 Thread panog
Another point of reference for the adequacy of fender coverage and tire size. I
have VO 45 mm fenders on one bike and find that they will accommodate up to a
33mm tire while maintaining adequate vertical and lateral clearances with very
good results. For 35 up to 38 mm tires I have been using the VO 50 mm fenders
with excellent results.
I cant see how the SKS P45 is described to cover up to 45mm tires (assuming
there is enough clearance to mount them high enough to do so) and still keep
your feet protected from the tire blow-off spray while in the rain.
