[RBW] Spencers Bespoke Breeks?

2018-07-02 Thread Deacon Patrick
Anyone have experience with Spencers Trousers’ bespoke breeks?
https://www.spencers-trousers.com/

I have to say, I’ve asked a few questions by email so far and am impressed with
Nigel’s knowledge and solutions (particularly his plan to make breeks for
cycling AND floor-living, which require greater range of motion than normal)
while (hopefully) still fitting properly. As it is, with the off-the-shelf, I
have to size up, and belt down the waist, and that is fussy and still moves a
bit oddly. At roughly $200 delivered (tweed), not bad, presuming they are made
to last and fit and move well.

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] Re: How rusty does the inside of a frame get without rust proofing? This rusty.

2018-07-02 Thread Cameron Murphy
They're decent coatings that convert some of the Iron (III) oxide to a more
stable form of Ferric Tannate. It's not magic, and will only convert a small
amount of the rust, so it's not going to handle large rust deposits, or restore
structurally unsound tubes. It's just a good primer for lightly rusted tubes,
not "new steel in-a-can"

[RBW] Re: Wool at 100*+

2018-07-02 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
REI Outlet has been a good source for merino wool content socks, tights and
tops/underlayers.
Not much from Ibex but there are a few and a lot of items from SmartWool.
Usually sizes are constrained but available in XL and/or Small.
Cycling specific wool shorts and tops are rare.

I just ordered two Patagonia "Steersman" shirts which look to have large,
buttoned breast pockets. "Airy and fast-wicking for hot and humid
climates"
Will try them out for cycling. (Hoping the pockets will be good for wallet
and phone.)

it does what I described, dehydrating rust, more aggressively passivating
the metal surface using citric or dilute phosphoric acid. If you clean it
well and don't have a lot of residual chloride, then paint it, it should
hold up.

[RBW] Re: N+4?

2018-07-02 Thread iamkeith
I totally get it. I'm getting a new Atlantis, and it's just going to go to
the back of the que until I finish some other bike projects and until I can
afford a wheelset. It will likely be several years before I ever ride
it.

Like you said, "when you see a Rivendell that you like, you need to get it
when you can" but, in my case I have to add "when you find a Rivendell (or
any bike, for that matter) that *fits*..." The Atlantis has always been
the aspirational ultimate for me, but has never been offered in a frame
size that worked. You could see it as a problem that I now have several
other bikes which I got as alternatives and which more or less duplicate
it's function, but I like them way too much and I've spent too much time
dialing them in to get rid of them. That's one of the reasons I like the
long chainstays so much. Variety, even if it's subtle, is variety. Or, I
could justify it as a "spare."

I kind of want to give some cashflow to Riv right now too, even though my
own is tight at the moment.

Meanwhile, none of this means that I'm not actively refining a short list
for the NEXT bike or two that I'll buy. You'll have to get WAY over 20
bikes before I see it as a hoarding problem, so relax. You're in good
company.

2018-07-02 Thread George Schick
Speaking of rust, since we're on the subject and metallurgy experts have
been chiming in, what is the prevailing opinion of some of these products
on the market nowadays that supposedly turn rust into a hard material that
supposedly restores the rusted areas to something like the original
surface? I tried some of that stuff on a rusting vehicle I owed several
decades ago (when those products first became available) and I was less
than impressed by the results. Not sure what chemical processes take place
with those products, but it always sounded too good to be true - and that
was my experience.

[RBW] WTB-Marks Rack & Sackville Saddle Sack

2018-07-02 Thread Peter H
Hi,

I have an upcoming trip, and I’m rethinking my set up.

This is probably a shot in the dark, but figured I’d ask...

Wondering if anyone on the list has a Marks Rack and Sackville saddle sack
either small or medium?

Looks like the bags are being discontinued.

Thanks!

Peter

I vigorously APPROVE of the purchase of an MIT Atlantis
I strenuously APPROVE of the Antelope Pass justification
I wholehearedly APPROVE of purchasing to opportunity vs purchasing to
need. Purchasing to opportunity loads up your inventory. When a need (or
desire) arises, then you interact with your own inventory.

Great work!

Re: [RBW] Re: Dear Riv, please make a wider Noodle

2018-07-02 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Holy moose noodles batman.

+1 on the shallow drop

I am putting some Whiskey No.7 46cm bars on my Hilsen to experiment after
getting a taste of some shallow drop/flared bars on a friend's bike.

I'll share thoughts if I stick with them.

There are some people that ride 666's at the shop and they flex quite a
bit. Most report that as a nice attribute (I can see that), but I think of
the fatigue resistance of aluminum and it would make me a little nervous.

A steel moose stem with removable faceplates and huge swaged section on an
ultra wide noodle with shallow drop? Dreamy. Niche on niche on niche on
niche and probably wildly expensive.

Rod,
Congrats on the new Atlantis, and the other three bikes in your build queue are
great too! I always find it comforting to have a build project waiting when
the time/weather is right.
I wish Riv put the truss on the 56cm Atlantis too; I’d buy one in a heartbeat.
I really like the look of the curved second top tube in the 59cm.
I look forward to photos as you work your way through the builds!

[RBW] N+4?

2018-07-02 Thread Rod Holland
As someone wisely pointed out on this group, if you see a Riv frame you
like, it's best to buy it when it's offered. On that basis, I just ordered
a New Atlantis, a.k.a. MIT Atlantis, a.k.a. LWB Atlantis. It's a 59cm,
meaning 700C with a truss. The joke is that I already have three other
builds queued up (an Ocean Air Rambler 700C, a Sam Hilborne, and an old
Nobilette go-fast); I've done a really good job of not getting to these,
due to a range of distractions, but have full build kits for the Rambler
and Hillborne, and need to spend some quality time in the basement, putting
them together. Given that it's also prime riding season, what this really
means is that I need some weather foul enough to make me prefer wrenching
to riding.

So why, when I already have builds for three more very likable bicycles
queued up, on top of five bikes already in the stable that give me real
satisfaction to ride, would I go and order another frameset? Rocks in my
head? Poor impulse control? Probably. But it falls out like this, I think:
I've got a soft spot in my head for touring bikes, and already own two;
I've got another soft spot in my head for Compass tires, and was an early
adopter of Barlows, RTPs, and Snoqs, all Extralights; none of my current
bikes would accommodate the Antelope Pass, I've wanted an Atlantis for
years, and the Riv long chainstays experiment is intriguing; I have also
admired the old ANT truss bikes, and missed the window for those. So,
godnose when I'll get it built, but I've taken the plunge...

... and when they are all built, what on earth am I going to do with 9
bikes? My bicycle hobby is turning into one of those "if present trends
continue" jokes...

I missed the other post, but surely nobody could be upset about vulgarity

If someone finds that upsetting, they can lick the bottom side of my bottom

Well, I think we’re missing the larger point and that is that Richard was
upset that someone used course and vulgar language in reference to the
President when clearly the use of course and vulgar language is reserved
for the President hisself.

Imagine how upset Richard must have been about the way the current
President spoke about the last President before the current President was
the President.

Reed, no worries at all - I had a point to get across, and had to revert to
my profession to make it. My 44-y-o Raleigh is not treated, but I bought

The marks on the paint are where my younger daughter used it for her indoor

There are two main areas of disagreement here: those who disagree with
overtly political content on a cycling mailing list and so object to
this thread, and those who support the policy in question and object to
its being objected to here.  To those in the former camp, I say this:
it's not a cycling list per se, it's a list about Rivendell and
historically Grant's writing about a subject /even though it's not
cycling per se/ has made it within the scope of the list.  Subjects such
as Paleo diet and hatchets leave no doubt whatever about this in my
mind.  So if you don't like the topic being discussed here, blame Grant
or get over it and find a more "pure" list.

As for the other group, those who support policies of committing human
rights violations and dislike seeing them criticized here, I say this:
piss off.

[RBW] Re: How rusty does the inside of a frame get without rust proofing? This rusty.

2018-07-02 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I agree, Ron. I've actually done a bit of metalworking in my day. I would
say, though, that with reasonable care, and excluding environments that
continually expose bicycles to dampness and or salty water/humid air, most
bicycles will not rot out from the inside, at least not for several
lifetimes. If I am doing a complete rebuild, and the bike is outside, and I
have a can of Boeshield in my hand, I'm not averse to squeezing off a few
shots into the bowels of a Reynolds 531. But not a top priority for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wool at 100*+

2018-07-02 Thread bruce.herbit...@gmail.com
I have a stash off Ibex Duo wool/poly panel shorts  that I cut the pads out
from. Find them on Ebay.  I have a Kucharik pair bought new without a pad. Also
have icebreaker bibs with a pad. My favorites are Smartwool Rambition shorts
though, from which I've also cut the pads out. Just a little elastic mixed in
with the wool.  Under padless shorts, I wear wicking sports briefs in hot
weather and wool boxers in cold weather. The Kuchharik kind of sags when wet,
which I'm not wild about. The Ibex is comfy but needs a wash with every use.
The all wool Smartwool and Kucharik do not.  If I'm a little saddle tender
after a long ride, I'll use the padded Icebreakers with Bag Balm as the skin
glide.

I gave up lycra shorts largely for reasons of comfort, not appearance -- I
hated the bulky, awkward diapers, the tight clingy fit, and the clamminess when
you cool down. Worse, for me, than synthetic jerseys.
